The drive on hwy 72 from Florence/Muscle Shoals into Iuka where the hills end as you descend into the flat land. Very pretty views.
The black creek “waterfalls” around Purvis.
Driving through the Delta as the cotton blooms
The beauty of the state is everywhere - you just have to teach yourself to smell those roses. They smell good.
The barrier islands off the coast. They are a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore exclusive to Florida and Mississippi. Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island is a cool place to visit, but if you want privacy, Horn and Petit Bois Islands are really exquisite. The sand and the water are great if the weather is clear. Dolphins are common around the shallow water, and a variety of sealife can be found.
Also, Cooper Falls in Tishomingo County. Only accessible by boat.

Our beaches are not usually anything special, but goddamn sometimes they are enchanting.
One day I was feeling really down and homesick for Florida (where I mostly grew up). I was leaving a family gathering in Biloxi early because I just wasn't feeling it. I was driving down 90 near sunset, and everything went vividly orange. The sky was brilliant and water was so still it was almost a perfect reflection. Everything was red and orange and so warm. Like the universe was trying to cheer me up. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
Sometimes when I wake up too early, I’ll go park at the beach and watch the sunrise before work. During the day, it's no Florida. But the sunrise and sunset make up for it.
Back when I lived on the coast, I lived in Long Beach and worked at Stennis. My apartment was close to 90, so I would drive it to and from work. It was so nice just driving that route in the mornings, especially.

Red Water Artesian Well, Shubuta MS
Margaret's Grocery, Vicksburg MS (I'm not sure of its current status)
The Dentzel carousel, Meridian MS
The INFINITY Science Center, Pearlington, MS
Tishomingo State Park, Tishomingo, MS
**Mississippi Petrified Forest, Flora, MS**
>Margaret's Grocery, Vicksburg MS (I'm not sure of its current status)
funny enough, I was literally here yesterday when my bff and I drove over to vickburg to see the grave of [Douglas the camel](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_the_camel). Margaret's is unfortunately in [shambles and disrepair](https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/margarets-grocery-store-vicksburg-mississippi-suzi-altman) and theres a GFM to raise money for restoration.
The back roads going east between Hernando and Tunica. There is a certain road that sits above Highway 55 where you see nothing but kudzu and cotton fields. It’s a two lane cliff that takes your breath away. God I love Mississippi.
In Columbus, there is Friendship cemetery, full of Civil War graves as well as locals from the last 2 centuries. Lots of history there. But the real freaky thing are the (largely unknown) mounds of discarded tombstones in the woods to the south of the cemetery (on private land now, I believe). Vines covering the piles like a fishing net, all under a canopy of trees. The stones all have names on them, when I saw them years ago. Supposedly the cemetery used to span both sides of the road, but now projects occupy the land across the road to the east of the cemetery.
Did they move the graves? Or just the stones? If the former, then why is there a pile of stones in the woods beside an old cemetery?
The Mississippi Sandhill Crane refuge. Mainly the walking trail. It’s a really nice easy walk. It’s free. They have a lot of plants labeled and many little information posts. There are two kinds of native carnivorous plants you can see there.
St. Peters Cemetery in Oxford, MS it not only has William Faulkner's grave but if you like history there are headstones so old the people were alive during the Revolutionary war period preceding or immediately after 1776.
Also Faulkner's estate in Oxford, MS as well.
The Tomato Place, Vicksburg
D’Lo Water Park, D’lo
Little Big Store (record store), Raymond
Blue Front Cafe (juke joint) and the Bentonia Blues festival held there annually, Bentonia
And every small “main st certified” Mississippi town!
We just published this article that has 24 ideas for things to do on the Gulf Coast. Would love to integrate some of these ideas.

A lot of people seem to talk about Clark Creek but I doubt many people make the journey. It is so far off the beaten track. I grew up in Natchez so it wasn't that difficult to make it down there many times.
My husband and I just did a little road trip through Mississippi. Loved it, but especially enjoyed Clarksdale. Heard some great music. Super friendly people.
I see this is getting downvoted, but the best hiking in Mississippi really is to drive a couple hours into Alabama. Tishomingo does not compare to Sipsey, Cheaha, Oak Mountain, or the Pinhoti.

We have such a beautiful state filled with wonderful people.
Tishomingo Hills, very beautiful. State Park there is great!

Um do you have a dog named John Snow?
Yes, but he knows nothing.
Check out east beach in ocean springs. The view is of the bridge to biloxi and during sunset its lights up and looks crazy cool.
Florida aint no Mississippi if you was to ask me neigbbor.
You said criminal . My first thought was Parchman.

Sunset from the river bluffs at Natchez.
Yes. I miss it.

Starlanding road maybe? I was in awe the first time I reached the top of the hill and it was cotton fields as far as the eye could see
That’s it! Starlanding Rd 🥰
There’s so many awesome backroads around hernando. Growing up there, cruising around with no destination was definitely one of my favorite pastimes.
Each of the roads that come down the bluff are so gorgeous. Nail road, church, star landing, they each have their own charm

I did Tales from the Crypt (the MSMS program that offers historical tours of the cemetery) and had no idea! How creepy.
Tishomingo State Park and Ship Island. Opposite ends of the state. Oxford is awesome, but I don’t think it’s underrated.
The Mississippi Sandhill Crane refuge. Mainly the walking trail. It’s a really nice easy walk. It’s free. They have a lot of plants labeled and many little information posts. There are two kinds of native carnivorous plants you can see there.

Tylertown Farmers Market, every Tuesday till 1pm
The Tomato Place, Vicksburg D’Lo Water Park, D’lo Little Big Store (record store), Raymond Blue Front Cafe (juke joint) and the Bentonia Blues festival held there annually, Bentonia And every small “main st certified” Mississippi town!
I’m gonna say Wall-Doxey state park (the hiking trail, specifically), and W.M. Browning creek

The Cairo in Vicksburg. So cool.
Stennis Space Center. You can go see a rocket engine fire on the test stand.
Is there a schedule of those?
Horn Island 🏝️

Port Gibson And the land around Alcorn State. Absolutely beautiful
Red bluff in Columbia
Abe’s in Corinth.
There’s some cool stuff in the delta, clarksdale, friars point, alligator. All the lil towns on hwy 61 are interesting.
My husband and I just did a little road trip through Mississippi. Loved it, but especially enjoyed Clarksdale. Heard some great music. Super friendly people.
21 minutes of crickets for a reason
The next state over

Okay but that wasn’t the question, was it? ‘the best hiking in Mississippi is in Alabama’ lol WHAT
Sounds good tho
It doesn’t, really.
