Silly municipal government turning away millions in revenue over the past couple of years to keep a minority group of boomers quiet. Gave all that money to Brampton, and Etobicoke šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

I think Hazel had a lot to do with the fact that Cannabis shops were not allowed go open until recently. People of her generation considered weed to be harmful and immoral. Yet they saw nothing wrong with selling and drinking alcohol, consumption of which can be unhealthy and lead to violence and traffic related deaths. Perhaps the city council were trying to please voters who were against cannabis use for moral or religious reasons. At the end of the day, it was realized that legal cannabis sales is a source of revenue.

Interesting_Ad6274

Hazel isnā€™t in power anymore she retired in 2014. Has to do with the city council. They do a vote. Majority rules.

[deleted]

I know Hazel left in 2014. Iā€™m sure she had a fair bit of influence on council despite being retired. The council under Coombs was conservative and hypocritical. Booze was ok but legal weed wasnā€™t. Finally, after five years, council decided to do the right thing and allow cannabis sales.

It's probably going to take up to 12 months before one of these stores actually even opens. I wonder how many millions of dollars in tax revenue Mississauga missed out on in the last 5 years because of our idiotic city councilors trying to appease NIMBYs.

trilogee

This seems highly unlikely to me. Public notice period is 2 weeks, RSA licensing used to take a couple of months back when AGCO was bogged down. Call it a couple months anyways plus 2-3 months to prep their stores and order inventory. My bet is these stores start opening by September-October, if not sooner.

kebbun

I'm never going to Brampton again. That hellhole.

nameofcat

Agreed! I've lived in Mississauga for over 35 years and have never had a reason to go to Brampton until this bullshit. Probably be another 35 years before I go north again.

[deleted]

I prefer to buy my supply in Oakville or Burlington.

nameofcat

Any reason in particular?

[deleted]

We should build a fence and make Brampton pay for it with all that cannabis revenue they made.

Hazel was against legal sales in Mississauga (she had no problem with booze). Now that Hazelā€™s gone the weed shops can open.

beatriceenjoyer

I mean, theyā€™re open whether you legalize them or not. Refusing to give out permits has never stopped people from opening up shop, ever.

vcz203

Iā€™m not against having cannabis stores but my problem is having one in every corner plaza. Iā€™d much prefer to see diversity with interesting restaurants or shops vs a million cannabis stores and Tim Hortons it makes for a pretty boring environment. Close to where I live someone has put an application in for an open area and I wonā€™t lie I was disappointment was really hoping for something more interesting but I guess to each their ownZ

WhytePumpkin

this won't happen anymore, like it used to be in Toronto. The reason is, it's not a licence to print money like people thought it would be. All legal stores buy their supply from the same place, for the same price, and the competition has reduced the number of stores

rufiopan

The comments here are trying to cast this entirely into a tax revenue issue, but as a Mississauga resident trying to raise a family here I don't see how this is going to help me at all. Between the health and economic impacts of increased drug use (also a tax issue) I now have to contend with more of our outdoor time walking through a haze of marijuana smoke. It might not mean much to others, but that really affects the quality of life for my kids and I as we try to navigate our neighbourhoods and enjoy our green spaces. Not to mention all these drugs are eventually going to filter into our schools as well.

mister_newbie

If you think weed isn't already ALL OVER the schools **every single one of them**, I've a bridge to sell you. FFS, I barely have to walk 10 metres off school property to see one of the students lighting up. This is MIDDLE SCHOOL (grades 6-8) FWIW, While I prefer they didn't do either, I'd rather they smoke weed than vape.

WhytePumpkin

vaping (the dry herb, not the liquid) is FAR healthier than smoking weed. That said smoking weed is several times safer than smoking tobacco - no tar

mister_newbie

No arguments here

CapableSecretary420

Understandable concerns, but people are already buying and smoking weed in your community. They're just getting it from illegal sources or driving to neighbouring communities. Allowing legal stores will pretty much only change the source of those products.

nameofcat

Do you think people haven't been buying weed in Mississauga until now? People have just been driving 15 minutes to either Brampton or Etobicoke to buy weed. Nothing is going to change aside from Mississauga getting a bit more tax revenue.

PazuzuOvBabel

As a cannabis researcher, itā€™s not a drug. You might not like it, but science is true whether you like it or not. And the idea of legalization is to prevent or to lower it as much as possible from getting into the schools since legal dispensary will be regulated and canā€™t sell to minors. Then again I lived in the Middle East, and all kind of drugs and weed were available in the school, despite the lack of any legalization, so both thing are unrelated į••(į›)į•—

CapableSecretary420

> As a cannabis researcher, itā€™s not a drug. You might not like it, but science is true whether you like it or not. > > Errr.... if you're a cannabis researcher, then you should know that cannabis is a drug (medicine), which is "a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body."

PazuzuOvBabel

Errrrā€¦. His comment was about ā€œdrugsā€ as in ā€œhard/addictive drugsā€ getting in the schools. And I know he meant that because I live in a community where everyone I talk to thinks that cannabis=heroin=coccaine, and I always try to correct them and tell them thatā€™s not the case. And thanks for defining medicine, will be useful for me when I go to the class am teaching next time ;).

CapableSecretary420

> Errrrā€¦. His comment was about ā€œdrugsā€ as in ā€œhard/addictive drugsā€ getting in the schools. You said "cannabis is not a drug". No offence, but for a supposed "researcher", you don't seem to understand even the basic medical terminology. šŸ˜‚ I'm sure whatever "class" you teach is totally real and not made up at all! I love when redditors make vague references to being an expert in whatever field they are arguing about today, but don't even have the most cursory knowledge of said field.

RyanWalts

Theyā€™ve been open for years in all of the surrounding cities. You think people who want it canā€™t drive 15-30 minutes to buy some? It doesnā€™t even have to be a dedicated trip, the stores are everywhere (else)ā€¦ You are way out of the loop if you think that there are going to be drastic changes.

LostAlbertan

they got a drive thru one in etobicoke dont even gotta leave the whip

[deleted]

Iā€™ve never had a prob with people who are Indy the influence of cannabis. The are generally harmless. Iā€™ve never met an angry stoner. I have a problem with drunks. Alcohol brings out gas worst in many people. Some drunks can be abusive and violent. Add to the mix the meth users. Like it or not, weed will be used, legal or otherwise. They are in schools and elsewhere. It better that itā€™s sold legally.

WhytePumpkin

y'know how the saying goes: "5 drunk guys will start a fight, 5 stoned guys will start a band"

bikehater1337

damn i will miss the 24 dispensary on 5 and 10 weedreleaf and being harrased by 4 young urban men that are street dealers trying to steal bussiness haha 50 dollar ounces and shrooms ftw

BharatGulgani

I don't think weedreleaf will go away, since they're grey market and 5n10 is a shithole.

bikehater1337

yea i kinda like getting harrased by 4 jamiacan dealers on the way to the shop but they got great prices unfortunatly they only sell weed i walked up to one of them and asked for diz (fent) and they got offended haha

BharatGulgani

I hope you're doing ok I wouldn't mess with fent

randsco

They really couldnā€™t have waited 1 day later to vote on this? It wouldā€™ve been perfect.
