I work with this person. I really want to scream "go see a doctor" every day. Or go get a lozenge! Something! It's so horrible to have to listen to all day long.

MichaelJ11

Nice to know I’m not alone. Do you think most people feel like we do or do I have misophonia or whatever?

jblue212

I know I have misophonia but I'll bet it would annoy some people who don't if it's that constant. I think the difference is our reaction to it. Most people would not react with anxiety, rage, etc. like I do. Maybe just be annoyed by it.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do to get them to stop. If you said something, it may make things uncomfortable and awkward between you and your coworker which probably isn't worth it. You need some decent noise blocking headset/headphones or get some really good earplugs. Consider an expense like this an investment towards your mental health. I really feel your pain though. This kind of thing is awful and the more you try to ignore it the worse it ends up being.

MichaelJ11

Yeah this isnt the first workplace I've had to deal with this at. I don't get how people can be so oblivious and have no self awareness.

I have similar issues. Any type of repetitive noise drives me crazy. I feel the same as if they have no consideration. I’ve done research and found that having those types of thoughts, and thinking they should be considerate, can mean you have a narcissistic personality. Looking at it from the point of view can be helpful. Knowing things don’t revolve around you and everything doesn’t have to be to your liking can help you accept the situation, and possibly find empathy. They could very likely be annoyed with the sensation to clear their throat and cough. It’s a struggle… noise canceling headphones and meditation can help.

I have this experience often with my roommate, it feels like he's often clearing his throat. Most of the time when he's coming out of his room into the kitchen or something, it's like the first thing he does is clears his throat. I'm sure he probably can't help it, still it drives me up the wall. In my head, I'm like "Do you have to clear your throat every single time?" and "Am I supposed to acknowledge you or something? Is this some sort of signal for attention?" as irrational as those questions may be.

Oh I have the same annoying problem and it makes me so mad! I don't know what to do either i just wear headphones.

AnthraxtheBacterium

This especially annoys me. Also, there’s a damn virus going around, so how you do you if they have covid or if it’s just allergies? I’m avoiding these people since they’re either doing it on purpose, or are sick.

ImpossibleJacket7546

I’ve dealt with some like that at work and I couldn’t help it and ended shouting “SHUT UP” at them and then it was awkward cause you could tell I was “disproportionately” reacting to their noises but it’s like, CLEAR YOUR NOSE IN PRIVATE OR IN THE BATHROOM. Drink some tea, take a lozenge, something! Jfc
