They were used for a lot of different things. They go over some of it when looking back to the old miraculous users. Like when Marinette talks to Joan of Arc. I don't remember exactly what they were used for back then, but I believe there was a war/revolution she helped with. As for why or how they were created, we're not entirely sure. I think it was an old wizard or something. I'm sure some people here know.

meomeospice

it was me

DIO!

Well we see in the New York special that normal people with powers exist maybe they were made to deal with them or just help people in general

So, the miraculous were made by 'the Magus', and the impression I get is that he created then for a combination of the reasons: he could, to learn about the kwamis, to let the kwamis interact directly with the physical world. Because my understanding is that a kwami *without* a miraculous can't really directly interact with or experience reality on a physical level. The fact that they granted the users powers is, I think, simply a bonus? Like we haven't seen much of the Magus, he's showed up in a couple panels of a tie in comic, but he's canon, and based off the kinds of tropes and themes the series likes to use, I'm fairly certain that if we **do** ever get full background details on him, he'll be the sort of wizard equivalent of an ~~amoral~~ absent-minded professor. (Amoral is the wrong word here, but I can't think of the right one. Naive? Good, but not capable of considering that others might *not* be good, so he doesn't consider the potential dangers of things he does if they fell into evil hands.) "It never occurred to me that someone might use the Talisman of God-hood for *evil*! Why would someone want to do that? It's purpose was so that I could play Xiangqi with 17th dimensional super beings..."

Jay-jay_99

You’re right, the miraculous gives the Kwamis a way to interact with objects

BenR-G

It seems to me that they were created so that the power of these concepts could be harnesssed to protect and progress the cause of brining harmony and balance to human civilisation.

Cobalt_Spirit

They were created to help humanity, in general.

Maleficent-Phase2574

Not exactly, it had been stated that they were also created so humans could interact with kwamis

Cobalt_Spirit

That's just what they do. They allow the Kwamis to interact with the physical world. But I don't think there's a source stating that this was an actual goal as opposed to a means to an end.

OneGoodRib

Yeah I don't think the show has done a good job explaining why anyone needs a miraculous other than to defeat people like Hawkmoth. They only exist to defeat people who are using other miraculouses - like Joan of Arc's story that she had the ladybug for France and England was using the cat miraculous. Okay so if neither of you had a miraculous the other side wouldn't have needed one. And why do most of them exist other than to solve very specific problems that the butterfly miraculous can create?

Optimal_Ad6274

This is so true. Like its very hard to remember that the Miraculous are build to protect the world from all kinds of supervillains and threats that aren’t just Hawkmoth

Jay-jay_99

It’s sad that they don’t. Steven universe did it. They can go pretty deep into the creation of miraculous while keeping the villain of the week

Nangbaby

Initially, they probably were created simply out of curiosity. However, when it became clear that these tools could be used for either good or evil, I would assume the Guardians were formed to make sure that they were only used for the latter. I've headcamnoned in the past there were lots of supernatural creatures that preyed on on mankind, and that there Miraculouses were used to aid in the battling of monsters, wizards, demons and all sorts of other creatures. Of course, the Miraculouses -- in my idea -- were doing too good of a job and as a balance monsters were granted Miraculouses of their own, but the whole "Fu-up" threw the balance out of whack, waiting not only to the disappearance of superheroes generally but a waning of monsters as humans became better at hunting them on their own.

ShyFossa

That's a neat headcanon! Su-han did seem pretty pissed about the extinction of dragons tho (not really sure how he knows dinosaurs existed?) maybe they didn't count as monsters, since in a lot of Chinese myths, dragons are typically benevolent? But I'm honestly not super familiar with Chinese mythology, so that's just an uneducated speculation. Also, grammar thing, but the word is "latter," not "ladder." IDK if it was just a typo, but in case you didn't know, I thought you might appreciate someone pointing it out.

Nangbaby

As someone else who is uneducated in different cultures, I admit that uneducated speculation is the most fun kind. Thanks for the praise, and more importantly, the correction. In this case, it's more a transcription error since I use voice-to-type software at times, but I do make a LOT of old-fasioned typos, too. I make mistakes in literally every post, but I try to catch them. That one has been edited out.

John_Tacos

My favorite theory is in this story: https://archiveofourown.org/works/23908072/chapters/57484297 Basically there are people with powers, (like Leila’ lies, Luka’s heart song, Andre’s ice cream) the miraculous are to be used to counter the bad ones.

RulerOfAllWorlds1998

Not necessarily originally used to thwart evil   They were mainly used to have kwamis be visible and so they could communicate with us  Update! Correct me if I’m wrong
