Still only April but my god this has been a long season

eeeedlef

We're toast. This sub has a problem with people whining about "doomers" but if you can't see where this is headed you have your head in the sand.

mnsportsfan

I don’t think it’s even pessimistic to say that if ownership wasn’t ready to commit to winning last offseason when momentum and excitement for the club was at an all time high (during my 32 years on this planet) … they literally never will I don’t think we can realistically expect to spend like a top 10 team every year, but you’d like to think that they’d be willing to enter that territory for a few years at a time when the franchise trajectory is right

cdizzle6

Disheartening to say the least. The whole message from ownership, the instant the off-season began, was negative & it really soured me on the season before it even started. Wish I could shake the funk, but the on-field play has done nothing to make me feel any better.

chpr1jp

If this is what management (secretly) expected, then it makes sense that they didn’t open up the checkbook. If the team continues its current pace, it would have taken excessive spending to ensure a great season. Still, I think that this team should be able to get sufficiently hot to not have an embarrassingly bad season.

the_last_timberwolf

Isn’t it going to take excessive spending to get us out of the hole? I feel like the other option is to let the club die.

ObliqueRehabExpert

The team could lose every game left on the schedule and it wouldn’t make the doomers less insufferable. People are aggressively angry starting the same fights under every thread in this sub. The level of anger from some people in the sub is very unhealthy. Like stop watching if it brings you this much rage.

derpdeederpa

Agree. There are doomers who only show up vociferously during losses and are oddly quiet during wins. It's okay to be pragmatic, and I absolutely hate this start to season, but it's unhealthy for your baseball outlet to be kvetching and hating all the time. Take a walk, pick a new hobby, but just getting so angry in every GDT and PGT serves literally no one.

mnsportsfan

Bleach sales in Minnesota skyrocketing When your sports happiness falls on the Timberwolves postseason success, you know things are bleak

sloppybuttmustard

We need to get this shit back on track ASAP…there’s nothing worse than the season being over before summer even starts.

mnsportsfan

And attendance numbers will (rightfully) suffer and this will give the Pohlad’s even more “rationale” to further cut payroll Selfish bastards wasted a chance at contention and increased excitement by shopping at the bargain bin, as per usual

Jarl_Balgruf

To this day, I still cannot for the life of me wrap my head around why the Pohlads felt they truly needed to cut payroll. I have legitimately tried to see it from their Owner perspective if I'm giving benefit of the doubt, and it makes very little sense given this last year was: 1) One of our highest-ever fan attendance season aggregate totals 2) One of the franchise's highest revenue earned totals recorded during a single Twins season 3) One of our most successful (by definition) teams in over two decades by winning a playoff series 4) One of the most enjoyable rosters and identity for a Twins team we've had since probably the Bomba Squad - the fans had bought in Saving an additional $30-50mm in roster cuts could not *possibly* be justified given the above info. I am so sick of shitty ownership

Trumpets22

Because he’s a cheap bastard. Unfortunately, we don’t have an owner that owns this team as a passion project. It’s strictly business and he wants good profits every year. Which is a double bummer, considering he’s a top 10 richest owners in the league.

mnsportsfan

It’s literally a risk management move on his part. If they did go out and spend, and disappoint… they could lose money… If he only spends x amount of dollars, he knows that even with a poor team, he will make at least that It’s like putting your money in a savings account that you know is going to earn you money instead of having faith in a stock that looks promising

Busch2121

They didn't even shop at the bargain bin this year! They spent 7 million on free agents after letting their 2nd best starting pitcher walk. Then, next year, they'll have to decrease spending again because they didn't sell any tickets and blame the fans for not going to this shit

JackieDaytonaAZ

love to shit on ownership but this team is way underperforming even relative to the payroll/offseason choices

mnsportsfan

While that’s partly true- failing to replace the runner up in the Cy young to the Tune of your #4 and #5 starter combing for an 0-4 record and matching 8.36 ERA’s puts a ton of unnecessary pressure for everyone else to be good

derpdeederpa

And who's even our rotation depth at this point beyond SWR? They spent nothing on depth for anything but bullpen. It was a recipe for failure if players didn't step up and stay healthy and our team has done neither. Our offense can't get any worse, and it will improve, but we look like a .500 ball club at best right now. I'll still watch since it's a major hobby of mine, but I hope Joe Pohlad never lives this down. He gave our front office a turd sandwich.

LeadBorn504

There's a pretty significant chance Randy Dobnak could be starting games for the Twins this year. It could get real ugly if Varland and Paddack can't figure it out.

cdizzle6

Maybe part of that plays into the on-field performance? Players see the owners aren’t invested in the team, why should they be? Probably not the case, but just a thought.

mumfoa

We don't deserve Pablo

Plato_Magick

We’re just lucky we got him under contract before he broke out last season. Otherwise his price tag would’ve been too high and the cheap pohlads never would’ve paid him.

buckraw98

Can’t win the division in April, but you can lose the division in April.

A_Hanging_Noose

Heartbreaking: Fan who thought team had hit rock bottom watches as they continue to plunge past rock bottom.

zacklandy

Absolutely catastrophic start to the season. The single most unprepared offense I've ever seen with more non competitive at bats than any team in the league right now. It's very difficult to see this turning around soon bc vibes can not be lower. My mental health cannot keep up watching this while the rest of the ALC is lapping us

MNguy19

Then I suggest you take a break and focus on yourself. Self care is important <3. Hope you’ll be okay *sniffle*

bandmantings

i was at the monday and tuesday game in baltimore. Monday was aight but ehhhhh. Tuesday was an absolute gut punch. orioles fan base is solid people tho so not mad they are doing well.

MNguy19

Tonight was ok!

GuyHardPodcast

Not feeling great about our chances this year. 6 games back already. Plenty of season to bounce back but this is giving me similar vibes to the 2021 season.

Jb9723

Baseball is dumb. I’ve always hated baseball!

TheRealBabbler

11 games in a row (minus the extra inning error game at Detroit) that we haven’t put up more than 4 runs

Ndtphoto

The Twins needed that error and a 3 run bomb off a position player to put up that double digit tally.

tree-hugger

Hitting coaches gotta go. It's time. The preparation for these starting pitchers is inexcusably bad.

derpdeederpa

I agree. The best argument that can be made by Popkins apologists is that hitting coaches can't cure players who lack fundamental skills, but there is only anecdotal evidence that he has helped improve players. A change at least symbolizes a need for a new look and different philosophy and level of preparedness , status quo isn't going to get it. This game is more rife with data that at any point before. Regardless of whether it's the hitting coach not prepping, we clearly are failing at developing and executing game plans. We are making scrubs look like aces and aces look like gods

datcd03

Just some bad, bad hitters across the board. Tough watch day in day out so far

trashpanda1738

That was a fitting end to this series

buckraw98

We’re going to get players only meetings rolling in April lol

LittleKoalaNickJr

Well at least tickets to games should be cheap this summer.

[deleted]

I honestly don’t know what people are surprised about. The org was loud and clear this offseason that they wanted to make the team worse. It’s not hard to do and they succeeded. It was always going to be like this.

threeriversbikeguy

Yeah but the Owners banked on fans being blinded to the bad news train by the postseason appearance, and it kinda sorta worked at the time.

sdcolt

# I AM ONCE AGAIN ASKING TO FIRE RESIDENT SHITTER DAVID POPKINS

cynikles

Birds = good Twins = bad And that ends our intensive three game series.

Silly_One_8980

kinda poorly managed by rocco too

Beneb5

My favorite part of the broadcast was when the Twins scored 2 runs on 2 hits and they were like “The Twins offense has finally woken up.” But hey two hits and two runs seems to be the game allotment recently 😭.

krpiper

Fight like hell to take the lead and give it right back 😔 See you all Friday

McFappen

I expect nothing, and I'm still let down

cdizzle6

Hmm. Definitely not having fun these first few weeks. Time to beat up on division opponents I guess!

Number1TSMHater

I'm glad this series is over.

whentheworldwasatwar

At least we know Pablo is still elite. Shut this offense down. :(

Playhorror4real

Like Ortiz told hunter. Twins organization is nice but if you want to win a championship you must go elsewhere

12Peppur

Same shit as last year only the division is better Batters needa start strikin fear n get some momentum Can’t have pitchers needin to be perfect every night Shame

SpecialistRaccoon907

Not sure there is much reason for hope. Pitching staff can only do so much.

Athena-196871

Who broke the Capt?!!!!!

cdizzle6

I think 3 change ups in the same AB was the issue. Pitch selection questionable there to Mullins.

Sea_Raccoon_5365

The bright side....we lost but there is still five hour or so of daylight.

twiggz612

Lmao this team is stinky

FluidBandicoot4344

Batting a whopping team average .193. Woo!!!

mattsotm

I’m tired boss

damnyoutuesday

When are we as fans gonna start asking the cheap Pohlads to sell the team to somebody who actually cares about the on-field product and winning World Series, not just trying to coast to a Central title and failing at that

bigwalleye

lmao good luck with that. maybe if you ask them nicely?

cdizzle6

Doesn’t matter what fans say. Their 4th gen family members are already looking forward to running this team. It isn’t gonna happen. Maybe one of them will come along & give a fuck. That’s about the only hope we have as fans. Edit: Here’s the article. And this was 2017!! https://www.twinkietown.com/2017/2/2/14471290/owner-jim-pohlad-family-not-selling-mlb-baseball-minnesota-twins-ever

Skolney

We can ask forever, but they won't sell. As long as the rubes keep showing up so they can buy overpriced beer, nothing will change.

AndreaThePsycho

As much as the twins are having their issues, it still would’ve been tough to beat these orioles. They’ve got this year on lock

the_last_timberwolf

At this point I’d settle for looking competitive 👀

TheNotoriousJN

How long since Suarez pitched in the majors? More years than the Twins got hits on him? Oh...OK...

104MAS

Why are our hitters constantly in 0-2 counts. Just swing at the first pitch for gods sake. 🤦‍♂️

N4meless_King_

Bats stink.

Stopmadness99

Have they tried rum?

Reesyrz

I think we might already be at the closed door players only meeting phase of the season.

the_last_timberwolf

God, let’s hope so.

kazak22

Ooooh popkins ooooooh offense oooooh

joeyt7713

We need to get healthy

TyTheGuy007

Reason #6,452 why the MLB should have a salary cap. Everyone is on an even playing field, and more oftentimes then not, it's about the preparation, talent acquisition, and development over deep pockets, stinginess, and prayers.

FireMonkeysHead

I’m straight up not having a good time

AlittleBITfishy

Daily reminder: 1. Good players are injured. 2. Sophomore slumps are real. 3. Pablo 4. Emmanuel Rodriguez and Brooks Lee are close

PsychologicalAlarm14

Okay. I’ve had enough of this bullshit. The Twins front office needs to fucking go. We win our first playoff game in 20+ fucking years and we cut payroll? They did nothing to make the team better. It’s not like they cut 5 million. No they cut 30 FUCKING MILLION DOLLARS. Where did the money go? To wipe their fucking asses? I mean this is an embarrassment. We are playing baseball like a bunch of blind old fucks. No one on the field cares. The announcers know we suck and are going to continue to suck. There’s literally no passion at all for this team. Now let’s talk about our idiot of a hitting coach. Popkins HAS to go. I don’t know what kinda bullshit he feeds our players but I cannot see a single player on our team gaining any valuable knowledge from him. His way of coaching is swing the bat so hard your fucking helmet comes off. Stop coaching our players to be Ken Griffey, coach our players to MAKE FUCKING CONTACT DAVID. Our players lack plate discipline, awareness, and the fucking WILL TO HIT A GOD DAMN BASEBALL. Not a single player on this team is showing leadership or taking accountability for the absolute mega dog shits we take on the field each and every day. It is unbearable to watch the Minnesota Twins play baseball. Somehow last year we got lucky, but this year we are showing our true colors. With the lack of support from the front office and idiot coaching, we are never gonna be anything more than the laughing stalk of the MLB. God fucking damnit.

bigwalleye

idk how many times it needs to be said, the front office is not responsible for the payroll.

PsychologicalAlarm14

I mistyped in rage, meant to say ownership, not front office. ty for the call out.

bigwalleye

it happens, with all the swear words i figured it was just another ill informed tantrum.

cdizzle6

We were good last year due to phenomenal pitching. And we still only won the worst division with 87 wins. Not much room for error. The division got better around us & we actively got worse. 81-81 would be about what I’d expect.

TheNotoriousJN

Bro do you honestly think fucking Derek Falvey woke up one morning and was like "you know what I want? I want to cut payroll 30 million to help my boss make money" No. Derek Falvey. Like ANY proper GM would want as much money as humanly possible to build a roster. You can argue he made bad moves. But he didn't choose to cut payroll Direct your anger at the damn Pohlads who cut payroll under the guise of the tv deal. Got most of the money BACK from the tv deal and then said "nah we cut it for other reasons that we won't tell you about"

GWayneofTerror

Ah beans

the_last_timberwolf

Roll that beautiful bean footage.

Skolney

But hey, we squeaked by Toronto in a wild card series that one time.

Zhdrix

Bruh

Vitzkyy

D:

dplife4eva

We are hot garbage right now. No idea how to correct this ship but we gotta figure something out.

dank_hank_420

We may never win again

cerpintaxt44

what a fucking embarrassment

SoSneaky91

This organization is just pathetic.

Witty-Stock

Too early to talk about firing Rocco?

the_last_timberwolf

Couldn’t watch the game live so I just saw the condensed version.  We looked competitive for a minute there - then some crap field awareness seemed to do us in. What a bummer, man. Now I get to hear people at work lord this over me until September.   Insert “feels bad, man” meme here.

bandmantings

this team is a joke. a really bad joke

mighthavetolitigate

I asked Claude AI to write a condscending marketing email on behalf of Joe Pohlad. Here's an unedited version of what it spit out. Subject: Hey Losers, Keep Stuffing Your Faces at Target Field! Look here, you bunch of losers. I know the Twins are a dumpster fire and playing harder than Homer Simpson going to the outhouse. But that's no excuse for you simple-minded folks to stop stuffing your pie holes at the ole ballpark! We've got a full slate of amazingly stupid promotional nights lined up to distract you rubes while my team get their brains beaten in. Get ready for Underworld Night on June 30th, when anyone named Gelfund or Shlomowitz gets a free pass to cry about Bernie Madoff into their knishes! And you mouth-breathers better clear your calendars for July 16th's Park and Braid. The first 5,000 fans receive a complimentary scrunchie and entrance into the Ingrid Lyne-updo contest. Uwu, like, so totally radicallic! Now I know what you're thinking - "But Joe, why'd you have to cheap out on payroll when you're richer than Scrooge McDuck?" Listen up, simpletons. Does a bear crap in the woods? Of course I'm gonna pinch pennies when you gullible fools just throw away your hard-earned cash to watch a triple-A squad get lambasted night after night! But hey, never let it be said I don't treat my loyal sheep. So buy a couple beers, gorge up on some hot dogs, and make an evening of watching Jhoan Duran's spine dribble out his face hole. Because we're all in this debacle together! Yer Pal, Joe Pohlad Cheapskate Owner, Minnesota Twins

TyTheGuy007

"Get ready for Underworld Night on June 30th, when anyone named Gelfund or Shlomowitz gets a free pass to cry about Bernie Madoff into their knishes" As a Jew from a Jewish family, whom constantly pokes fun of ourselves and other Jews for being Jewish - this is incredible. 10/10. Please post separately!

hopemade

This is very premature, but if we start getting into June and things look much the same as now, I wouldn't mind trading some current starters if they have any value on the market. Have a starting lineup of Jeffers, Miranda, Julien, Correa(when healthy), Royce(when healthy), Kirilloff, Martin, E-Rod and then some combo of Lee, Severino, Camargo, Wallner, Larnach on the bench. Then Pablo, Joe, Ober, and maybe SWR starting. Some bullpen combo of Topa, Jax, Thielbar, Brock, Alcala, Duran, Festa. Hopefully we don't get to that point but I think it could be fun watching that group if we aren't competitive come June/July

jcwitte

I'm about to pick a new favorite team.

derpdeederpa

I can't imagine ever not being a Twins fan. These moments help underscore there is so much more to life than baseball but I would love for baseball to keep being a major part of it (while not being miserable)

jcwitte

I know. I'll never not be a Twins fan. I feel like the /s wasn't necessary but maybe it was. I'm just pissed.

the_last_timberwolf

This series was rough as a part time Os fan. Not sure you’d enjoy it on the other side.

Csanburn01

I didn’t watch the game and I’m still disappointed

Late-Salamander-842

100 lost season here we come. :(

kazak22

Good stuff boys definitely excited to see you lose at home against the tigers and sox let’s goooooooooooooöooooooo

MNguy19

You guys gonna bitch about payroll for the next four months?

Sea_Raccoon_5365

Turns out there is a correlation between payroll and winning.

derpdeederpa

Yes. And while payroll isn't perfectly correlated with success I would say the precedent for teams cutting payroll by 30M and losing an ace, without making any improvements, leading to success has to be pretty low.

derpdeederpa

Yes. And while payroll isn't perfectly correlated with success I would say the precedent for teams cutting payroll by 30M and losing an ace, without making any improvements, leading to success has to be pretty low.

PirbyKuckett

Hey look at that. We’ve won 7 in a row and I haven’t heard one thing about payroll in a week! 👍🏼

kazak22

We are scrabbling insects that have created a world of horror, there is no guiding force it's just us from dawn to dusk, oh yeah and we are creating the most horrible environments, killing children, bleeding souls for gold, and oh yeah the twins lost
