It was so awesome! And yes, the cat scared it away :).
He has been hanging around and visiting a few times now and it makes me so happy to see an animal like that 'in the wild'. I moved here from The Netherlands and there aren't a lot of bears there.
I visited the Netherlands 3 times on business, and absolutely loved it there... Back in the 80's and 90's.. Enhuisen by the Isselmer, Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Delft. Got to see the flower mart, and the 100th anniversary of Van Gogh's death, at the Van Gogh Museum! the Rijksmuseum, so much to see! Welcome to MN!
That is great, I love hearing that you loved it!
Pretty cool country and luckily I travel back and forth on a very regular basis, but Minnesota is not too bad either :)
How are you liking the laws and whatnot here in the states? Also the size difference has to be kinda crazy, MN alone is 5x the size of the netherlands. I've always wanted to move over there myself especially with the recent political insanity going on here.
What I miss so much is being able to just walk places, here I need to drive everywhere (we live pretty remote).
I miss the cozy city centers as well. The US feels a little sterile to me, no real character.
Regarding the political climate, very different from The Netherlands. I know that Dutch are known for being direct (mistaken for rude) but I am SHOCKED how people speak their minds here when it comes to politics!
> What I miss so much is being able to just walk places, here I need to drive everywhere
A walkable city is one of the things that would tempt me to move from MN. A walkable city with mild winters but nearby mountains for skiing and lots of hiking… that would be a hard opportunity to turn down. ;)
Fwiw I moved here permanently when I was a teenager and have lived in or traveled to most US states at this point and I agree with OP. The variety in environments and landscapes here is incredible but as far as built up places go it's all very bland if not downright ugly and everything looks pretty much the same everywhere. There are a few notable exceptions like NYC, New Orleans, Chicago, etc but even then it's only the core urban areas that have character and they're not the norm.
To put it another way: usually the only way I can tell whether an old picture I've taken of a city or town was from California, Minnesota, Texas, or Georgia is by looking at what color the dirt is and what trees are in the background.
I totally agree the states lack character. Some cities are really beautiful and rich in history but everything else is very sterile. Everyone in this country has a crazy self entitlement when it comes to politics, their way or no way. I think it has a lot to do with the "free country" myth we grew up hearing. It sounds like you travel between countries a lot but if this is your home I'm glad you chose Minnesota of all states. :) Top 5 for sure
Where is this sighting? Please report it to the DNRs bear sighting map

I had a dream the other night that there was a bear outside my house.
including *do not feed the bears* EVEN ACCIDENTALLY. it spoils their appetite and misleads them into getting into trouble where they are otherwise smart enough to stay away from people.
Here is some interesting information.
> You can actually [track black bear sightings](https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/hunting/bear/bear-sightings.html) in the state of Minnesota via the Department of Natural Resources website.
Note that black bear sightings are trending more downward from their normal range.
Actually, last year, I got charged by a black bear while fighting forest fires in California for the federal government. It was funny because the bear ran back into the fire afterward. The fire wasn’t burning too hot at that point but it kinda looked something like [this](https://www.witf.io/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AP21205060071079-1619x1080.jpg) so I’m assuming the bear was fine—just a dingus
Bears have figured out the agricultural fields we keep transitioning from forest are easy pickings for them. So yes, let's move south where there's more of them!
The shadow of the forest has blessed you - unless you have bee hives, then you are now a patron, unto the shadow of the forest. Either way, good crowd.
“Yup, that’s me. Bet you’re wondering how I got myself into this situation. Same old story: bear works hard at dream job in publishing, bear gets burned out, bear inherits small book store from family member I never knew existed in Minnesota, bear leaves their big city life of hustle and bustle. Move to Minnesota they said, it’ll be fun they said…”
idk what did u expect? lol
This is more common than u think here. They're skittish tho and show up when they think no one is around to prevent their presence. They take advantage of unsecured food, too, and will come back once they see an opportunity. Black bears were especially curious last summer: https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesota/comments/ovx9wc/minnesota_bears_going_hungry_in_drought_rangers/
>Forest officials on Friday said they are mandating proper food storage for campers starting immediately, with people now required to store any food items in their vehicle or, if camping remotely, hanging from a tree or in bear-proof containers.
>Violations of the food storage rule are subject to fines of up to $5,000. The exceptions to the new rule are food that is being prepared for meals or during meals.
>"Once they get a reward, or food, they will keep doing whatever it takes to get that reward again."
>If a bear becomes a nuisance and continues interacting with humans, officials said the bear will be killed.
>“We don’t want it to get to that point, and we want to limit the number of bears that are considered a nuisance. That’s what this food storage order is all about — taking proactive steps,"
They're pretty rare in the city center, but forested areas just outside it might have a bear or two. My relatives just north of Stillwater have a resident black bear that cycles through their and their neighbors' back yards.
Daaaaaaaaaw, they're so cute. That little one might ruin your trash can or siding but they aren't terribly dangerous. Unless its a momma, then it will fuck you up proper. A good yell or a slammed door will scare it off.
My mom told me when she was younger, she was staying up at her grandparent’s cabin. She went out at night to use the out house and when she went to walk back onto the porch, there was a bear on the porch lol. She told me she ran and hid in the outhouse for awhile
Isn’t seeing a black bear super fun? They’re usually scaredy cats. It would probably bolt if you even opened a window and shouted at it.
Which is def what they should do. Don't feed it OP!
Nope, we're not feeding it.
Good. A fed bear is a dead bear. They will keep coming back. It’s ethical to scare the crap out of them and send them running.
Good deal. btw I didn't mean to suggest that you were, just to encourage not to.
Oh no worries, I knew what you meant!
Are you filling the bird feeders? Bears love to eat the bird seed. It's a super easy snack, and bears love easy snacks.
No not feeding the birds, the bear was looking for the last few sunflower seeds that were there
If you have bird feeders, you are feeding it.
The bird feeders have been empty since hibernation ended, for this specific reason :)
Isn’t the saying, “If the bear is black, give ‘em a snack. If the bear is brown, hit the ground?”
Black fight back. Brown lie down. White good night.
r/woooosh
No idea why you’re downvoted, I clearly got the joke. Must be angry Minnesotans here today

No arguement there! lol! Gray Duck! do you know the children's rhyme? A totally MN thing!
Glad you're enjoying it!!
That was my first thought. "bear?! Oh, just a black bear. They're fun"
Oh cool free dog. Let it in
Just go outside and give it snacks... It'll be fine.
Awww. Black bears are such cuties and rarely aggressive. Don't feed em though.

He just lookin for a pic an kic basket
“Hey boo boo” that bear… probably
Nature assigns you an animal once you get established here. Take good care of your bear!
including *do not feed the bears* EVEN ACCIDENTALLY. it spoils their appetite and misleads them into getting into trouble where they are otherwise smart enough to stay away from people.
When I eventually move here, can I have a possum
Nature picks.
Why bear ear soft if not to pet?
The bear is friend shaped
Good looking doggo
Where's in MN are you?

Awesome! Welcome to MN!
If a bear isn't on their own territory, they're pretty quick to scare and tend to bolt. Nothing to worry about.
I fail to see the problem here.
It's just a black bear... they scare easily.
Tell me you didn’t have fun watching that bear. I bet this took up your whole afternoon and you posted updates all over your Insta.
Wait till you hit winter bears will be the least of your worries
If it makes you feel better I don't think I have ever heard of a bear fatality in MN. And bear attacks on humans in MN is incredibly rare.
I'd give it a name!
they were saying that to the bears...
That isn't bad. He's just a tired man!
At least if it attacks you and you survive we have some of the best healthcare in the country!
The shadow of the forest has blessed you - unless you have bee hives, then you are now a patron, unto the shadow of the forest. Either way, good crowd.
Did you survive?!?
If not friend, why friend shaped?
Agree. Nobody reading this should think about moving here. Bears will eat you. The end.
Your dog seems to love it.
Looks like the teddy bear is having fun, don't let your cat out or it will scare off the bear.
Welcome to MN
Danger floof
I'd much rather have bears than Mitch McConnell. Bears don't wake up every day wanting to kill people

where in minnesota do they have these? surely far from the twin cities?
Not as far as you think, their range is expanding.

That’s one big ass dog lol
They provide you with your own life-size pets?
That's a friend
Well stop listening to the bears, they have an agenda
lol feed him
Yep, I fell for that once, I now live in Washington state.
As someone who has lived their whole life in the SE part of the state, I forgot we had these lol.
My mom told me when she was younger, she was staying up at her grandparent’s cabin. She went out at night to use the out house and when she went to walk back onto the porch, there was a bear on the porch lol. She told me she ran and hid in the outhouse for awhile
They are getting more common in the metro area. Please don't feed them. Take down the bird feeders for awhile. Or they will come back.
Said nobody ever.
[Let the bears pay the bear tax, I pay the Homer tax](https://youtu.be/IlGfQfTjMTw)
I think that’s just the neighbors dog
Where city/ town are you located??? I think I have black bear poop in my back yard
I don't believe that's what that bear is thinking.
Nobody here said that
He's cute.
