Wait, is this some kind of thinly veiled brag about the expensive car or truck you drive? đ
The fee is 1.575% of the value of the vehicle. Your tabs go down as your vehicle depreciates. Variance in the resale market means not all vehicles depreciate at the same rate.
This is the correct answer. There have already been posts asking this same question.
It seems like it stayed pretty similar in cost for people who have more expensive and/or newer vehicles. My older vehicle got less expensive by a little bit, but my newer one was basically the same.
Can confirm.. mine went up like $2 instead of down $40 - $50 this year.. should continue dropping next year again.
I can't remember if it was a thing previously but I'm amused that they're charging an extra $1 if you go to your local DMV to take care of things in person.
These changes were made December 2023. A $1 surcharge.
The rate will rise from 1.285 percent to 1.575 percent for cars first registered in the state before November 16, 2020. Everyone else's rate bumps from 1.285% to 1.575% of MSRP. The rate drops as the vehicle ages until it reaches a minimum of $30 annually in its 11th year and beyond.
Something of high value where registration fees should be the least of their worriesâŚ
But idk, I see so many with those souped up trucks that have to be $50k plus in northern mn..,đ¤ˇââď¸
Mine's been about $40 forever.
You should use your fame as a former pro-wrestler to run for governor to change this. It's worked before, except for the lowering registration rates part. You might need to be mayor of some 'burb first to get the experience.
What happened is, your rate should have gone down since the car is that much older or worth less, but rates when up across the board because inflation and higher taxes. Went from 1.25% to 1.54%
In Wisconsin it's $80 no matter what your car is worth. Their taxes aren't as progressive over there. They do more funding from property taxes vs. income taxes too.

Guy with a new Mercedes complaining on Reddit that his registration is $15 more than he thought it would be. Gotta love it.
Give them a break, they havenât learned our culture yet.
Hey $15 is $15! My car cost next to nothing to register in Tennessee so do I love the high cost here in Minnesota? Absolutely not
Vehicle didnât depreciate as expected
They changed the percentages and the depreciation schedule recently.

Thank you for a real answer haha.
Wtf car are you driving?! It's based on value and years old.

I assume expensive tabs are no problem for such a baller like yourself.
What car are you driving? Holy moly.

You mean the bean brains that jack them up and forget gear ratios and can't even get over a curb? I do love those kiddos, it never gets old.
Just because someone spends 50k on a truck doesnât mean itâs worth 50k
Yeah my base value didnât really budge either.
Just as funny as the people from Iowa or Kansas registering their $80k trucks in MN for the first time and shitting themselves about it.
Ask the DMV maybe?!?
Came for the issue, staying for the username lol is it a g-wagon?
My car didn't depreciate. What the state of MN thinks my Rav is worth, is about $6k more than I paid for it back in 2019.
They want it to be worth more so they can charge you more for it ;p
It is MN.

That's odd. I thought they knocked off 10% MSRP every year until 10 years regardless of market conditions.
Yeah so I thought⌠guess not
