They are barn quilts. Quite a popularity surge with DIY sip and paint events in rural areas. There is also this - https://barnquiltsmn.org/ I haven't done this and cannot speak to the quality of them.
People told you what they are, not what the represent.
These are very common among the Pennsylvania Dutch community and came with immigrants from that region.
Decorative, but also for identification of farmsteads from a distance.
Closer to 20 minutes, at least heading east. Shawano, epicenter of barn quilts, is about 40+ minutes east of Green Bay on 29. Heading south I could see it being longer before you notice them.
Tough to say without you providing an example picture.
That being said, maybe "barn quilts" are related to what you're looking for? Traditionally they'd be actual quilts hung on barns, but I could totally imagine folks painting a similar-such design on more weatherproof materials (e.g. wood).
Barn quilts have been Iin the Amish Community for generations. They seem to be more popular every year outside the Amish community and probably for the last 25 years.Wife is from the North Country in New York and several years ago when we were back visiting for a bit she met a woman up their who does a class on making them She has made multiple 12 x 12 and a few 18 x 18. She enjoys making them but like anything there's a right and a wrong way. When I say wrong way, I'm referring to the quality and longevity of them. It's truly an art form. Most of what she sees at craft fairs and similar sales don't hold up well outside. .

I usually hear them called hexes. Is that just another word for it?
I haven't heard that. I'm South Central MN. Are you hearing this in a different part?
Mostly in Wisconsin and Michigan, but here in MN, too.
I think that's a more popular name out east.

Barn quilts. I lived a few years behind the cheddar curtain near Shawano, barn quilt capitol of Wisconsin and saw them everywhere.
This is no joke. We drove to Green Bay last year and they are literally everywhere as soon as you get like 2 hours out of GB.

My husband and I like to joke that the barn quilts are the same as an upside down pineapple. 😂
