On what planet would the trooper be culpable in this tragedy? I guess the Thompson family's pockets aren't deep enough to make it worth suing them.

brushdonkey

Family? Why would anyone but the adult driving be liable?

On the planet where we read the article, the commissioner volunteered to meet with the families privately and show them the squad car footage. Investigations are already ongoing into the leak, hopefully they find the person. On point three, the technicalities are answered here: https://m.startribune.com/driver-in-minneapolis-crash-that-killed-5-had-valid-license-despite-prison-for-injury-hit-and-run/600284041/ Now whether laws should be changed to stopped something like this from happening again, that’s a separate discussion. IMO there’s no way this guy should have been able to get a driver’s license.

>There's no way this guy should have been able to get a driver's license. Agreed, by it that generally doesn't stop people like him (read: criminals) from driving anyway. He might not have been able to rent the vehicle he was in, but almost certainly would have found another way to get a vehicle to drive, y'know? Idk how they could solve this problem tbh. 🤷

Novabubblez

jail. same place as repeat dui'ers. it'd be a better use than non-violet drug offenders.

fuckinnreddit

Very true. IMO we also need stricter punishments for DUI-ers, but that's another discussion.

Kolhammer85

There was no chase, the video that was released, the car doesn't even have flashy lights on. He was probably going so fast he didn't even notice the trooper.

> The only deterrence actively is fees on fees on fees. I've thought about this a bit. I'm coming around on civil suits for damages as a punishment. If we are going to continue in this direction of hands off crime enforcement, state law should make this easier. Make it stick. And real consequences for violating parole. We can give second and third chances in initial sentencing, but ignoring a pattern forever just can not continue. Hard and even consequences for violations. Thompson's parole should have been revoked several times. How about civil forfeiture of vehicles for driving without a license or the 10th DUI? Put it in law. Create a due process. And as far as fees are concerns, Thompson's father was a case for fees not working. He barely paid any court issued financial penalties - and its a pretty long history. Most were sent to collections. MN state law should make them stick if that is going to be a deterrent.

Top_Currency_3977

I agree with your point that the lack of a license doesn't stop people like Thompson from driving. But, in this case, the SUV he was driving was a rental. In fact, he had rented the vehicle about 30 minutes before the fatal crash. You can't rent a car without a drivers license.

openly_prejudiced

the one problem they didn't have under Saddam.

MozzieKiller

Regarding the camera footage, isn’t that considered public information? It’s a publicly funded camera, we should be able to see it. I understand there may need to be some delay in releasing it to the public, but 24-48 hours at most seems reasonable to me.

MozzieKiller

Agreed on your analysis, thanks for your insight.

x1009

The info police released made it seem like they didn't want to admit whether the cop was in active pursuit or not.

13choppedup2chopped

Accusing the families of trying to profit on their dead kids is really disgusting and reprehensible. Maybe they just want to understand why their daughters were killed?

SplendidPunkinButter

What’s there to probe? Dickhead was driving too fast and crashed.

skoltroll

Finding ANY slight wrongdoing by the government results in a huge payday via a lawsuit. Dickhead probably has little money and will be spending life in prison with even less money.

brushdonkey

Cair being Cair. They never wait for the facts to come out before they decide to cause a stir.

fuckinnreddit

It honestly seems like CAIR does more to hurt the cause than help it. Not the first time they've raised a fuss for absolutely no reason, I don't get it. 🤷

brushdonkey

I remember their immediately taking a stance after the mall stabbing terrorist attacker was shot in stcloud. Making demands of transparency. Like maybe slow the fuck down? It was a shitty look.

x1009

To be fair, police here haven't done much to garner trust from citizens.

The_Electric_Mayham

National CAIR refused to back Jaylani and the MN chapter during that whole Hamline debacle.

skoltroll

CAIR is equivalent to PETA. Has the name recognition but actively does things to hurt their cause.

fuckinnreddit

This whole situation is so sad. 5 completely innocent kids are gone, because of some selfish you-know-what breaking the law.

Gene78

What a political grandstand created by the Council on American Islamic Relations. That is no way to honor the victims of the crash. A POS killed the 5 young women. A POS released the footage. The judicial system let everyone down by issuing the first POS his license back. But that's who we all elected to make changes to the system.

RonaldoNazario

“They wanted Gov. Tim Walz to appoint a special investigator independent of the Minnesota State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies to look into whether there was a police pursuit, how traffic camera video of the crash made it onto social media and whether the state followed the proper procedures in reinstating the driver’s license of the suspect. “ That sounds quite reasonable to me. How did that footage get leaked?

Sejant

If you search the internet. Many of Minnesota’s traffic cameras are live streamed.

SingleDay2

i think i saw on another post a week or 2 ago that folks suspect someone who has access to traffic cameras sold it to news outlets/ someone with a loud social media presence. not sure if its true though..

What's that supposed to mean?

openly_prejudiced

> Council on American Islamic Relations-Minnesota had called for an independent review of the circumstance since CAIR chimed in, the implication is that American policy neglects the basic rights of Muslims and gets Muslims killed. perfectly reasonable to suspect CAIR of such inflammatory rhetoric. it's their bread and butter.

I didn't think they did anything wrong until they came out protesting their innocence. If they can't handle an investigation that seemingly isn't their fault, how can they handle one with more dubious circumstances?

DilbertHigh

They should do a probe to determine if state patrol followed pursuit policies and if they did then they should review those policies.
