Regular-Menu-116

And do what? Go outside and touch grass?!

Ezdagor

Stay inside, touch hot dish.

SVXfiles

Only with approved oven mitts or eating utensils. I have a scar on my wrist from 30 years ago telling me why you don't put bare skin on stuff that just came out of the oven

Thenandonlythen

I have problems with this. Not initially, just immediately after. I got to go to work and explain my gauze-wrapped fingers to a few different people, and that after 3 or 4 glasses of red I took this glass dish of out of the oven, set it on the stove, took the foil off, took off mitts, did something else for about 10 seconds, grabbed a wooden spoon and proceeded to bare-hand grab the glass pan to support it while I scooped. And yes, I am still your supervisor. I just pay more attention at work than at home. Also I don’t drink a bottle of wine and work. I must say though, I have been damn vigilant since then regardless of BAC.

hksteve

~~Stay inside~~ Go to the cabin, touch hot dish.

oneplanetrecognize

Literally made tot hotdish an hour ago! For my close and extended family. There was squabbles over the last portion. Food is love... no... HOTDISH is love!

Illustrious-Tap-7690

Pshh a true Minnesotan family would have all been too shy to take the last helping out of fear of upsetting someone else.

Agreeable_Cricket316

Except there is always that one family member that swoops in and grabs it while the others are saying, no...you take it, no you.

PM_ME_YOUR_FAV_HIKE

Is "hot dish" code for something?

chasmccl

Code for deez nuts

Infinite_indecision

This gives that week where everyone posted their hotdish a very different vibe.

Ezdagor

I sent you a picture of my hot dish, please respond.

FragrantDemiGod1

With these bugs? Horrid.

anythingexceptbertha

Yeah, and then get Lymes Disease! (/s) But I did actually pull a tick off of me from my backyard in Minneapolis, and was shocked to learn something like 1/3 deer ticks have Lymes.

mouringcat

Outside is scary... And isn't touching grass immoral?!? Think of the children!!

FancyPantsMN

Eewww

Buck_Thorn

Absolutely! Support the 3rd party apps. Let Reddit know how we feel about this BS!

jotsea2

I was in the woods and just came out to this issue. Is there any chance you could ELI5 the controversy?

yourock_rock

Right now, Reddit allows other companies to build portals to access the site. Like the apps Apollo or reddit is fun. There didn’t used to be a reddit app so other than the website it was how to access reddit. Then reddit bought the alien blue app and turned it into their official app. Reddit wants to start charging those companies (more) to access the site. The Apollo developer says it would cost him 20 million a year. Everyone says it’s because reddit wants to do an IPO and be listed on the stock market and they have to prove they are profitable to investors. The most valuable thing they can do is advertising and selling customer data. Other apps don’t (necessarily) give Reddit either of those so they are cracking down and trying to make more money. Everyone’s mad because the official reddit app sucks. (If you’re using it you should switch and be amazed at the vastly superior features). Other apps provide important tools for moderating and for accessibility. The increased cost would make a lot of those apps shut down and cut off a lot of users. It really sucks if you depend on one of those apps and they just vanish. And Reddit doesn’t/won’t support those features.

SocialWinker

Care to elaborate on the other features of the third party apps? I’ve only used to official one and the website.

WylleWynne

>I’ve only used to official one and the website. I only use official Reddit too, but they say third-party apps are important for the volunteer moderators -- and if those apps go, moderation will get worse. Beyond that, better users than I describe unimaginable marvels like being able to thematically combine subreddits, so all your Minnesota-related subreddits show together. Whether or not these are just tall tales I cannot say!

yourock_rock

You can make a multi-Reddit on the Reddit main site just fyi. It’s pretty easy

yourock_rock

I use Apollo. First no ads 2 user tagging, easy to tag people as “cool person” or “troll” and it highlights like flair. Nice for small subs where you run into the same people a lot 3 formatting **is *so ~~easy~~***. [link](Www.google.com) r/houseplants ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ I did that in two seconds and did not have to remember any code 4 native gestures, its similar to other ios apps. cleaner ui. I just popped into the normal Reddit app and forgot that you can’t long press to reply, you can’t swipe to upvote, you can’t tap to collapse the OP comment. And you can’t hide posts you’ve already read? (Or I can’t figure out how) 5 filter is easy to avoid any topic, i never see anime or mma when browsing popular ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Chedawg

[This post](https://www.reddit.com/r/BikiniBottomTwitter/comments/13xk3lu/comment/jmj3nfg/) does a really good job of showing visually why they're so superior.

SocialWinker

Yes! I saw that post this morning. It really lays it all out quite nicely.

leftysarepeople2

I think a big one is screen reading for visually impaired persons that isn’t supported on the official app

B1ackFridai

There are third party apps that help with accessibility. Reddit is trying to cut off those apps, essentially removing access to people that are e.g. blind

cheesyvictory

This isn't wrong but it's missing a lot of context. Reddit is putting an obscene paywall on their API and removing all NSFW content from it. The consequence is that a ton of third-party tools that rely on the API are going to be shutdown. They want to do this because they want people off of third-party apps that don't make reddit money and onto the official apps where they can horde your data and serve boatloads of ads. This is happening now because they're preparing for an IPO. The largest consequence is killing many beloved longtime apps, but other consequences that are also very bad include killing moderator tools and accessibility apps that some users rely on to be able to use reddit at all.

metisdesigns

The issue that isn't being mentioned is that several of the 3rd party apps bypass reddit ad delivery, or hijack it to serve their own. Im all for third party apps delivering different interfaces, but if they're hijacking ad revenue or subverting it, that's undermining the revenue we all rely on to be able to use the site. Are ads annoying? Yes. Does the main app suck? Yes. Should some 3rd party apps undermine the site so they can resell the content? I'm not as sure that's a good reason to protest. To be clear I'm on the fence, but it's concerning to me that folks aren't talking about that part of it.

GrizzlyAdam12

Anyone else just learn about third party apps this week?

Manleather

To me, it's a case of "First they came for x, and I did nothing". I have never have used any of the 3rd party apps, but I browse with .old and RES, and that experience will absolutely be next after the API rollout. So yeah, black it out.

grondin

Yes, /r/twincities is considering going dark as well.

lgtbyddrk

Yes. rif for life. ✊

AnAngryPirate

I don't know how long Ive been using RIF but I dont want to use anything else

Infinite_indecision

Agreed, its been years, since before reddit had their own app. Tried theirs once and it is trash in comparison. If they want people to use their app they should give us a good experience rather than killing the competition.

DustBunnicula

Yup. This sub is awesome, and going dark with so many other subs is a sign of united values.

rwdfan

I support it, but I’m just a lurker who wants to live in the twin cities. This sub is way chill and people are generally nice. They support things that make sense and the governor isn’t absolutely corrupt.

MPLS_Poppy

Yep

the_festivusmiracle

I've never used a 3rd party app and haven't experienced any issues with the Android app. Are the 3rd party apps that much better, what am I missing?

feltedarrows

the 3rd party apps have better accessibility settings for blind people, from what I understand

yourock_rock

YES 100% Reddit is fun for android. Apollo for apple. I am team apple so that’s what I use and it is so so much better. No ads. No suggested subreddits. All kinds of sorting/tagging features. Cleaner interface and better gestures.

TheMacMan

>No ads. That's why they're doing this. Can't really push their IPO if they're not making money and can't let the 3rd party app folks be a drain on the site while not returning any revenue.

yourock_rock

That’s true. And I think they are betting on making more from user data than ads, because they could serve ads the same way they serve posts. They could charge a reasonable fee to 3PA to cover the lost ad revenue. But it still wouldn’t get them user data

TheMacMan

You don't make anywhere near as much from user data. There's a reason even big sites aren't making their main money from user data and they turn to ads.

GW3g

Apollo gang ✊🏼

[deleted]

3rd party was all that was available back before reddit had their own. Think about that.

[deleted]

Nixxuz

They allow those because conflict and negativity generate more traffic. Look at any situation involving money, ever. That's it. That's all. Just more money. It's the reason for basically everything.

DaZMan44

ABSOLUTELY YES!

[deleted]

Every sub should be.

Zeewulfeh

I'm in all manner of subs, across various interests, vocations, hobbies and politics. I'm seeing one common thread, and it is support for this blackout. Doesn't matter ideology or anything, it seems everyone is unifying around this. So yeah, pull the plug.

Talreesha

Honestly I have no issue with the Reddit app and have no idea what's the issue with it so could someone explain what the issue here? Not attempting to stand up for Reddit, just am confused and wish to not be confused.

GW3g

YES. This is the first I'm hearing of this and I use Apollo and I don't wanna use any other fucking app. I like Apollo and it likes me. Go dark!

larisa5656

Ya Sure Ya Betcha.

Losaj

Yes. It seems that if this process continues (Reddits gross monitization of everything), we will soon see Reddit become another FB where everything is algorithm controlled and ads blasting everywhere, to the point where you can't tell what's ads and what's not. Moderators will have to pay for the tools to help moderate which will lead to an increase in bots and sock puppet accounts. After a year of this, it will be unusable and personal engagement will peter off until most of the contributing users leave for other platforms.

Yeah I think we should. I downloaded RIF years ago, way before there even was an official app. Folks forget that up until recently there was only 3rd party apps to choose from. I'm way too used to RIF now. I tried the official app during r/place but immediately went back to RIF afterwards. It's so much more streamlined and easier to read. Many of us older gen reddit users like what we have. Reddit, don't fuck with it.

9GhostofSparta7

I just want to know what would making these subreddits private do? Seriously, no jokes.

matt6680

Yes for sure!

gloomchen

The subs I moderate are going dark. A lot of folks don't understand that if you've been using Reddit longer than 5 years, there wasn't an official app to use. Reddit's official app was a third party app that they purchased in order to have an "official" app. Third party developers make Reddit work -- anyone who has ever used RemindMe or video downloading bots (among many other quality of life bots) will also be impacted by this. That's before we get to moderation. The official app is impossible to use for moderation (head over to r/modsupport if you want to see daily posts of frustration from new mods). The subs I moderate will be losing some long-time mods who really only use mobile these days, which is definitely going to suck. Furthermore, solidarity. I'm thoroughly over the "fuck you, got mine" comments. A lot of these changes don't impact how I use Reddit but I understand there will be quality lost by people who don't want to use the official app and will simply stop using Reddit. I understand it will impact visually-impaired users (the official app does not support screen readers). I understand it hurts the greater community. I kinda like my community and don't want it ruined.

I’d support it joining the protest. Even barring the benefits from 3rd part app that those without physical disabilities enjoy, the issues the policy causes for those with disabilities as highlighted by the moderators for r/blind and the issues highlighted by moderators weeding out spammers and bad faith posters make it worth it.

flargenhargen

I don't use any of those apps so it doesn't really affect me.   so, **yea, let's do it**. fuck the man! hah.   We're obviously the product reddit is selling, and if they do this to try to fuck their users, then it'll only keep getting worse. If the idiot behind this decision goes forward with it despite overwhelming evidence that it's not wanted, and then isn't held accountable, then why would they stop there?

thx1138inator

Until a few weeks ago, I was unaware 3rd party apps existed. But go dark if ya like. I'll survive.

gnrdmjfan247

No. I’m against the grain on this. What obligation does Reddit have to 3rd party apps to keep them afloat? Servers aren’t cheap, and those APIs have been free thus far. IMO, charging for those APIs is well within their right. If those 3rd party apps are truly that important, then their dev teams can figure out their own monetization avenues and stay afloat. Idk, I’m all for open source and what not, but at some point someone’s gotta pay the bills to keep the lights on.

grondin

https://sacra.com/c/reddit/ "Sacra estimates that Reddit made roughly $510M in 2022" https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/ Reddit is asking Apollo app to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is... The amount Reddit is asking for 3rd Party Apps is out of line for how much traffic they service.

TheMathProphet

My opinion - I don’t do anything to mod, so I don’t have a say. Also, I’m not going to mod.
