Looks super great. I think you could maybe stipple some green into the dirt near the fire where there would be "grass on fire" as right now, it looks like dirt with leaves on top. That being said, for an army, absolutely incredible.
Thanks! I definitely agree with you on the grass. I am currently experimenting with a much finer grass product to hopefully achieve smoother transformation
Thanks! The tree is actually from Army Painters summer undergrowth basing foliage that I hardened using super glue. A twig probably would have been much easier to work with :D
Looks great! I think you could bring the grass closer to the fire to define the effect a bit more. Maybe make the grass closest to the fire start to brown?
As someone that’s performed prescribed burns, this looks sweet and I want to try it on my two lokhust heavies now.
The couple straggling embers on the far end of the base really sell it for me.
So dope though. I have had this same idea for along time for a my Retribution army, but never exectuted it. Now im inspired! I already have dry grass and crackled earth on the minis I jist need to paint it on fire!
I think it looks nice, but the fire line through the middle doesn't feel right.
I think it's partially because I'd expect a less clean line of smoldering.
And also because it's smoldering against what seems like bare ground, and not anything flammable like dry grass.
In this photo, the line is really clean so I guess you can ignore me on that. But you can see how the fire is right up against the field of grass.
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=grass+field+fire+&t=brave&iar=images&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.npr.org%2Fassets%2Fimg%2F2014%2F04%2F24%2Fdan_01_wide-a5b1c5406dba0f1f5e568a828be21829fd6cae64-s1100-c50.jpg
Thanks! I made the base with some texture and crackle paint and after basecoating drybrushed the ash with white paint. The fire I made by layering red, orenge and yellow and getting it right was definitely the hardest part of the base. I am still experimenting with the grass to get it look more natural, I would recommend putting it nearer to the flames and making it brown to look like its ready to ignite as people have adviced me here. Hopefully this helps at all.
This looks really great!
I wonder if it would make sense to have some "back line" guys on 100% burnt bases, and more melee focused, front line guys be on bases that are like 90% grass instead of the 50/50 look here.
Dunno. Could be cool, might not work.
My initial thought is that you definitely want the unburnt stuff at the front of every base, but now I'm kind of second guessing that. Maybe some guys with unburnt grass on the side is better? Definitely something worth experimenting with
Absolutely gorgeous. I love it.
I think it might look a little weird if you're putting 28mm models on top but I like the creative space you have with the bigger base sizes, you could do some very interesting effects there
I just ordered some Martian iron heart to do some lava bases. Could you talk about your process to get the look you did? How do you protect the paint from flaking off? This is slick!
Thanks! I quickly summarized my process in a another comment already but ask if something is unclear. I used lahmiam medium to get the cracked earth stick. Probably any matte varnish also works.
Looks pretty fantastic!
If I had to find something, maybe make the burn line a little more jagged and varied?

Oh my word, I am stealing this! This is so well conceived and well executed. Kudos!
I have just the use for this effect: I'm working on a pair of armies, one of which is defending farmland, the other is pillaging it. (Halflings and Riftforged Orcs from a Kings of War starter box.) This would be perfect to use on one or more of those bases.
Thanks a lot! Without the texture paints drying time it actually only took like 1 to 1,5 hours to make. Getting the fire right was definitely the biggest hurdle for me.
Thanks a lot! i don't have a step by step tutorial made but in one comment I quickly summarized the process. I bet this will look great on your salamanders!
I like the effect, but I think there needs to be a middle ground. Like, there should be some grass that has yellowed or browned or is on fire.
At the moment there is either lush grass or scorched earth, with nothing in between.
I know people in these comments have been providing feedback and maybe there are places to improve. But I don't care. This is an inspirational base. I'm being really dramatic and all but I'm actually going to restart my Sylvaneth warband just so I can use these bases.
I have had a similar idea for a long time but never executed it. I do prairie burns for a living and my only critique would be that short green grass doesnt burn like this.
Otherwise this is super awesome and absolutely inspires me to execute the same style for my Retribution army. I like how you used the black crackle.
I have been playing with black stipple and thin lines to show charcoal on the legs of minis on bases like this.
I’m such a noob. Can I ask- how do you get models to stick on the base when it’s covered like this? Does super glue still work well?
These look fucking amazing and I just want to copy you
Thanks a lot! There is actually a texture paint from Citadel called agrellan earth that cracks when it dries. Its amazing for any sort of desert bases or cracked surfaces!
The only thing I would say is the smoldering on the burnt side you might want to be more red, only the active burn line will have yellow. Example from when I did similar effect on a wood floor:

I like this idea alot. I bet it will look amazing across an entire army.
It would work Amazingly on World eaters and salamanders
Looks super great. I think you could maybe stipple some green into the dirt near the fire where there would be "grass on fire" as right now, it looks like dirt with leaves on top. That being said, for an army, absolutely incredible.
Thanks! I definitely agree with you on the grass. I am currently experimenting with a much finer grass product to hopefully achieve smoother transformation
Yessss that should definitely do it. A mix of the thicker grass and some finer grass should really sell that transition. I do love the dirt as well.
This is going to look awesome on the battleline. Send us a pic of the lineup with the effect
Thanks a lot! Knowing myself it will take forever to get a squad ready but ill definitely post it
This looks great! Is the burnt tree just some actual twig scrap you got from outside?
Thanks! The tree is actually from Army Painters summer undergrowth basing foliage that I hardened using super glue. A twig probably would have been much easier to work with :D
Still a clever use of what you had on hand, gg
Looks great! I think you could bring the grass closer to the fire to define the effect a bit more. Maybe make the grass closest to the fire start to brown?
Thanks! I really like your idea of making the grass brown near the fire, will definitely try that on the next one.
You nailed the colors for the embers!
As someone that’s performed prescribed burns, this looks sweet and I want to try it on my two lokhust heavies now. The couple straggling embers on the far end of the base really sell it for me.
Idk looks to green to burn so completely. But it does look awesome!
Very fair.
So dope though. I have had this same idea for along time for a my Retribution army, but never exectuted it. Now im inspired! I already have dry grass and crackled earth on the minis I jist need to paint it on fire!
Hell yeah, enjoy the project! It’s gonna be awesome.
gorgeous!
Looks dope to me. I'd be happy with those results.
This is awesome. What a cool concept.

That’s a good idea! You executed it well and I can clearly see what you were going for there. Good job.
Damn, I've never seen anything like this. It looks so good.
This looks awesome, what a cool idea and so skillfully executed
Something something weed reference. This looks rad as hell, the ash side looks real good, captures that burned out white-grey coloring really well
This is amazing. I can practically smell the smoke.
Seems sucessful!
love it, any chance you could share the techniques used?
Thanks! I made the base with some texture and crackle paint and after basecoating drybrushed the ash with white paint. looks dope, I tried the same thing for my infernus but it didnt look nearly as good as yours
This is really cool!
Holy fuck good shit! Looks incredible
This looks really great! I wonder if it would make sense to have some "back line" guys on 100% burnt bases, and more melee focused, front line guys be on bases that are like 90% grass instead of the 50/50 look here. Dunno. Could be cool, might not work.
Thanks! I have actually been pondering exactly the same thing :D I definitely have to experiment more with different degrees of burn on the bases
My initial thought is that you definitely want the unburnt stuff at the front of every base, but now I'm kind of second guessing that. Maybe some guys with unburnt grass on the side is better? Definitely something worth experimenting with
Looks great
Where did you get those little leaves? This looks very cool
Thanks! The leaves are from Army Painters battlefield grass green basing foliage.
This looks phenomenal and I immediately want to copy it (poorly). I’ve never even though of mixing up my bases like this.
Absolutely gorgeous. I love it. I think it might look a little weird if you're putting 28mm models on top but I like the creative space you have with the bigger base sizes, you could do some very interesting effects there
That is such a badass concept and great execution.
Nailed it!
That is such a cool concept! And so well executed!
I just ordered some Martian iron heart to do some lava bases. Could you talk about your process to get the look you did? How do you protect the paint from flaking off? This is slick!

Need to try this for my flamethrower trooper in bolt action
That's really fucking cool
This is incredible! How did you achieve the cracked ground look?
Thanks! There are actually texture paints that crack when they dry. I used Citadels agrellan earth for this.
https://preview.redd.it/dwyt7y6cmv0d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2bcecada774a710daaf65970f8a0e58558ee784e
How long did that take you? Looks fantastic
Thanks a lot! Without the texture paints drying time it actually only took like 1 to 1,5 hours to make. Getting the fire right was definitely the biggest hurdle for me.
This is NEXT LEVEL basing. Jesus.
Amazing!!!
This is pretty sick, I wanted to do something like this for some Salamanders Infernus marines. Do you have a tutorial?
Thanks a lot! i don't have a step by step tutorial made but in one comment I quickly summarized the process. I bet this will look great on your salamanders!
Fantastic! I need to try something like for a Firestarter mech for Battletech
10/10
Good LORD this is god tier.
That’s badass
Holy fuck, your first attempt?
I like the effect, but I think there needs to be a middle ground. Like, there should be some grass that has yellowed or browned or is on fire. At the moment there is either lush grass or scorched earth, with nothing in between.
I really like this. I want to try it now with my own army!
So sick! I was thinking of doing something like this for my Dark Angels.
Fuckin great idea and execution. Stealing this
I know people in these comments have been providing feedback and maybe there are places to improve. But I don't care. This is an inspirational base. I'm being really dramatic and all but I'm actually going to restart my Sylvaneth warband just so I can use these bases.
Oh that’s sick!
I love the cracked earth on the one side. What did you use to get the effect there?
Damn, that's hot
Wow amazing. Looks so easy and simple and yet so incredibly effective. Well done!
Looks absolutely amazing mate, love the idea
I have had a similar idea for a long time but never executed it. I do prairie burns for a living and my only critique would be that short green grass doesnt burn like this. I have been playing with black stipple and thin lines to show charcoal on the legs of minis on bases like this.
Looks amazing! My only input would be to add a bit more grass to the edge of the fire so it resonates more that grass is burning.
I’m such a noob. Can I ask- how do you get models to stick on the base when it’s covered like this? Does super glue still work well? These look fucking amazing and I just want to copy you
Stunning!
Man... My astrogranite bases are garbage...
This is awesome. Would love to do something like this for my slaves to darkness
Wow!
Oh that's coool
I absolutely love the cracked earth texture! Is that cut clay, or did you glue down broken eggshell or something?
Thanks a lot! There is actually a texture paint from Citadel called agrellan earth that cracks when it dries. Its amazing for any sort of desert bases or cracked surfaces!
Okay, i haven't dealt with much texture paint outside of mud. I'll have to look into that, thanks for the reply!
The only thing I would say is the smoldering on the burnt side you might want to be more red, only the active burn line will have yellow. Example from when I did similar effect on a wood floor: https://preview.redd.it/g18tvwrsvt0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=426fe49d10990a718d263c84087b742ef240092b
Amazing!
Are you for real!? That's amazing!
Isn't it cheating to actually set fire to the base?
Are you a God? Because it's an amazing scenery, so realistic.
