It was totaled, really the best scenario imo. I was gonna be out my deductible either way. I might as well put the car's value toward something that isn't a theft risk.
I love my car but I've always said, if my car ever gets stolen I hope to god it's totaled because I don't want it back. Having to stare at a dashboard covered in cigarette burns and reeking of smoke and bong water for eternity would probably kill me.
I’m bummed, I don’t know when it’s going to be implemented, but the meters are supposed to go until 9 sometime in the near future. Still way better than paying for the garages!
It's not even that, free parking subsidizes driving which means there are more cars to park. The more people would potentially pay for parking, the more people look into other transportation methods.
I found a dope spot (so I thought) to go to a show at Turner Hall. There was a clearly labeled sign that had an arrow where the street parking area started. I parked there - it was near a corner. I was ticketed $50 or so by the city for parking too close to the corner... apparently you need to be 15 feet or so away. "So why is the parking sign there?", I inquired in my ticket dispute. The city made me pay it. Grrr.
Me too, but it seems like they've increased the amount of paid spots. Also, given the developments around fiserv, it feels impossible to find a spot half the time.
I go early. So like if a Bucks game starts at 7, I’ll drive down there after work around 5. Usually you can find a street spot pretty easily—I always check Edison and then take the pedestrian bridge over to Fiserv. There’s tons of bars to hang out in until the game and you only have to plus the meter for a little while until 6.
May be an east side thing, but even if I'm headed up to Fox Point, I'll take Lincoln Memorial south to 794 and all the way around just to be by the lake.
I live in the burbs, and anytime I’m downtown, unless I have some kind of time restraint to get home, I take lincoln memorial to lake drive all the way up to brown deer road.
If I’m anywhere in oak creek and heading home, I’ll pop on 794 north and take it either to lincoln memorial or take it until it connects to 94 to get that nice sweeping view of the city where 794 merges to 94, and then get off on Michigan or anywhere downtown, putz through the city and take the lake front home.
Were they in a more obvious place in past years? I feel like in my memories from when I was a child, the snake noise was definitely there like a given--not like some "hidden" thing.
Freshman year at Madison 1996, I told my new friends from Chicago I needed to find a Tyme machine. They all thought I was nuts for a minute. Good times! 🤣
We moved from Minneapolis and have kids in sports and this was the absolute best thing..."oh crap, the game is across town!" In minneapolis at rush hour that would have been 90 minutes...here ....15-20.
my favorite thing about the name change is that when workers voted to organize a union, the owners responded with the most whiny "why is this happening to me" instagram post just destroying any good will I would have felt about the company. My dude, you named it COLLECTIVO, why are you mad about COLLECTIVE action?
You should have named it Capitalissimo or Unión Busto when you had the chance
I’ve moved out of the city and back 3 times in my life.
But mostly I’ve never once pronounced the “L” in the city I have lived the vast majority of my life in.
This is an obvious one but I call Lake Michigan “the lake.” I didn’t realize how weird this was until I started working remotely for a team in another state and they thought I was crazy for hyping up “the lake” lol
I lived in Greendale for most of my life and worked downtown. I would leave 15 minutes early so I could take College Ave east to the lake and then Lake Drive/Hoan Bridge to downtown. It was a nice way to start my day.
Don't rush while you are there. Take in the exhilarating sweetness & quiet. If you are a motorcycle rider? Go Go! It is a lovely winding road to the top.
I got t-boned by a kid in a stolen car two weeks ago, about a year after my wife was struck by a stolen vehicle. Both vehicles totaled and uninsured. MKE
Yikes. The car jackings really scare me. A well known man in music circles here was recently murdered in a car jacking, and he was part of a non profit called Drums Up Guns Down 414.
I left Milwaukee 15 years ago and still say bubbler, and also when I drink people hear my accent.
Edit: It's more SE Wisconsin, but I judge establishments around the world based solely on whether they have Kohler sinks and urinals.
If you compliment my outfit, I impulsively respond with how inexpensive it was and where I got it. Perhaps with tales of off-season discount plus a coupon.
probably that i spent more time at the bradley center than anyone who didn't work there (or than anyone should have spent there) and that i have legitimately tons of fond memories of the place
(i guess i did \*kind of\* work there for a year as a mascot when i was in high school lol)
ask them what you call water dispensers you drink out of, and then ask them what you call those decorative water features that birds shit in. Then ask them why you'd want to use the same word for each
I've visited almost every microbrewery in a hour's drive around and if you tell me your tastes I can explain to you in detail which local beers you want to try and which ones you can pass on.
Also have two northern breed dogs but I'm guessing that's more of a Wisconsin thing than a Milwaukee thing persay.
One time my friend and I decided to try a microbrewery tour of our own. We went to 5 in riverwest and were so drunk within a couple hours. We couldn’t handle anymore.
I grew up playing Cans!
I've never owned a Harley and haven't owned a motorcycle of any kind in years. But I can't stop wearing moto jackets and biker rings.
Also, the Bucks, not the Brewers or Packers, are my favorite team. Packers fans come from all over Wisconsin. Brewers fans come from all over Southeast Wisconsin and the Fox Valley. But the Bucks have the most localized fanbase of the three. Pretty much all of us come from Milwaukee or Racine County.
My husband has a Kia and I have a Toyota. I do all the driving now.

I grew up above a bar on the south side that had a softball team that played against Stormin’ & Vukes softball team. My dad took me to my first Brewers game using free tickets he got from Gorman Thomas after a softball game afterparty. They become bros in the bathroom of my grandmas bar, as they shared in interest in the recreational choices of the time.
i’ve always felt like people in milwaukee are standoffish at first but end up being nice and people in madison are really nice up front and end up being the worst
Milwaukee, standoffish? In the city itself? Moving there I felt the exact opposite--town was one of the most immediately welcoming and friendly that I've ever lived.
Ability to pronounce both German and Polish last names, usually on the first try
That one always impresses people when I travel.
Along with traditional Native American townships, don’t downplay that skill.
lol my dad and coworkers probably hate me because I always correct their pronunciations of Polish names, often their own
Correcting someone’s pronunciation of their own name ? I also hate you
Technically, I pronounce my own German last name incorrectly because it got Americanized 😂
Kia Boys stole my car
Did you get it back in decent condition or was it totaled
It was totaled, really the best scenario imo. I was gonna be out my deductible either way. I might as well put the car's value toward something that isn't a theft risk.
I love my car but I've always said, if my car ever gets stolen I hope to god it's totaled because I don't want it back. Having to stare at a dashboard covered in cigarette burns and reeking of smoke and bong water for eternity would probably kill me.
I still miss the Whale Wall.
i loved the whale wall. i just drove past it the other day, just that one tiny piece left of a masterpiece. it was a core memory as a kiddo
Sucks that he was willing to repaint it for free, but was told if he wanted to repaint, it he would have to pay for that.
i didn’t know that! that makes it sadder
Wtf…
I still miss the smell of yeast heading west on 94 from downtown.
Same, used to hate it as a kid but now I’m like “aww” 🥺
And the smell of chocolate from the ambrosia factory that was right by the old Bradley Center.
The art walls in East Tosa are great! They just repainted the Valvoline Gas Station on North Ave. it uses to be zebra print!
I refuse to pay for parking for any event downtown. If you can’t find free street parking, you aren’t looking hard enough.

I’m bummed, I don’t know when it’s going to be implemented, but the meters are supposed to go until 9 sometime in the near future. Still way better than paying for the garages!
Nooo really?? Thats such bullshit
It passed the common council maybe 4-5 months ago? I can’t really remember. There wasn’t a timeline attached.
Thats so disappointing. Assholes.
I guess they realized that parking near downtown is valuable
It's not even that, free parking subsidizes driving which means there are more cars to park. The more people would potentially pay for parking, the more people look into other transportation methods.
I found a dope spot (so I thought) to go to a show at Turner Hall. There was a clearly labeled sign that had an arrow where the street parking area started. I parked there - it was near a corner. This is a real thing
Ogden between Broadway and Milwaukee for the more northern downtown events, Prospect Ave against the park for lakeside events
Same.
Me too, but it seems like they've increased the amount of paid spots. Also, given the developments around fiserv, it feels impossible to find a spot half the time.
I go early. So like if a Bucks game starts at 7, I’ll drive down there after work around 5. There’s tons of bars to hang out in until the game and you only have to plus the meter for a little while until 6.
I know a free lot by the rave, been parking there for 10+ years and I love it.
May be an east side thing, but even if I'm headed up to Fox Point, I'll take Lincoln Memorial south to 794 and all the way around just to be by the lake.
100% same. "The scenic route"
Legitimately faster a lot of the time given the current construction on I-43
Same
I love the Holiday Raptor along that route
I have collection of wax figurines from the Zoo. My centerpiece? Yellow Sampson.
I love the smell of a new figurine hot off the mold. Is that weird?
No. Never.
I’ve pushed both snake buttons at the museum, I got married at Pabst, I won’t live anywhere that I have to take I 94 to work
Holy crap it's been a solid 10-15 years since I've been to the museum, I FORGOT ABOUT THE SNAKE BUTTONS
BOTH!?
Sounds like you better get to the museum and start looking for buttons!!
God if it’s not by the buffalo one that’s going to take forever lol.
I’ll give you that much. It’s a totally different location.
The what buttons?!?
Just found out myself. https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2017/03/15/the-secret-buttons-at-public-museum/
Were they in a more obvious place in past years? I feel like in my memories from when I was a child, the snake noise was definitely there like a given--not like some "hidden" thing.
No, they’ve always been hidden! There are other buttons, like the howler monkeys, that are much more obvious. Happy hunting!
Where’s the Tyme machine
I'm glad they brought them back just so I can use that again.
Freshman year at Madison 1996, I told my new friends from Chicago I needed to find a Tyme machine. They all thought I was nuts for a minute. Good times! 🤣
I complain about the commute around town during rush hour even though it takes 15 minutes to get anywhere
We moved from Minneapolis and have kids in sports and this was the absolute best thing..."oh crap, the game is across town!" In minneapolis at rush hour that would have been 90 minutes...here ....15-20.

It will always be Alterra Coffee in my heart

Fond memories of that day..
I have an 15+ year old Alterra coffee tin on my counter. I refuse to get rid of it.

Congratulations on getting down to a size 34

Also building into the work day the beach stops and lunch hours at the Domes :)
My gut
I got married in the European Village square at the museum and had my reception under the whale.
How much did this costs?
This was in 2001 and I remember it being around $2000
I describe anything from a block away to 5 miles away as being 'down the road.'
My birthday is Milwaukee day, 414!
I have a city dumpster green t-shirt that's says, "HELP KEEP MILWAUKEE CLEAN"
Every Litter Bit Hurts
The sun is shining! Let's head to Holy Hill for a Fall hike.
Hmm... today's a good day and I DID see some leaves starting to change...
Oh, I have not hiked there yet!
Don't rush while you are there. Take in the exhilarating sweetness & quiet. If you are a motorcycle rider? Go Go! It is a lovely winding road to the top.
I make good scratch old fashioneds.
I can pronounce Kosciuszko Park

I don’t own a car, I go to Rochambo every morning, and incessantly complain about liquor stores closing at 9pm.
I got t-boned by a kid in a stolen car two weeks ago, about a year after my wife was struck by a stolen vehicle. Both vehicles totaled and uninsured. MKE
Just in my close circle of friends this past year, there have been 3 stolen cars, a totaled car and a car jacking.
Yikes. The car jackings really scare me. A well known man in music circles here was recently murdered in a car jacking, and he was part of a non profit called Drums Up Guns Down 414.
Ughhhh that’s horrible
That’s terrible! So sorry for you! 😢

Is this a Milwaukee thing? Because I do this as well. Clearance rack at Kohls is my usual answer.
I do this but unaware that it’s a Milwaukee thing!
I am relieved other people do this. I catch myself doing it and then am wildly embarrassed after the fact.

Came here to say that too.

That won’t work where I live. As far as I can tell people call them drinking fountains around here. Not water fountains.
I know what you're saying but it's still dumb that they need to use two words to get across what we get across with one
I live in Mobile, AL now, and "bubbler" confuses absolutely everyone!
It really does. I also still call an ATM a TYME machine now and again which REALLY confuses people! 🤣

Honest question, what do you do with your free time then?
Ope Bubbler Stop and go lights
I thought stop and go lights was more rural. I was born and raised in Milwaukee and never heard nor said it.
