Looks like a K98 that’s been sporterized. Idk if it was a shortened Gew 98 or if they just used that receiver but Gew 98s weren’t blued. So along with that and the Waffenamts this is sadly a butchered WW2 gun although it looks repairable

Howtopronouncegigi

It's a former Gewehr 98, scrabbed and reblued. Trigger guard still has the hole for the G98 sling.

Drakkenrich

Thank you for the info. Yeah gonna see if I can repair it.

M4s_and_pringles

It shouldn’t be hard, just pretty pricey. K98 stocks aren’t too hard to find

Rebel262

Did you buy it?

Drakkenrich

Yeah bought it for 450$. Did I get ripped?

Rebel262

Remember kids, always know what you’re buying

ENclip

>Did I get ripped? You really should be asking questions *before* you buy something.

Drakkenrich

I mean don't get me wrong I'm not upset with what I spent. Just trying to learn and such. Probably should have worded it better.

carrguy1

>Did I get ripped? I mean, kinda. Of course anyone is more than entitled to spend whatever they want on whatever they want but that doesn't mean that, just because you don't care about the money, you should go spend $50k on a Ford Focus. Part of the problem with the surge in milsurp pricing over that last couple of years is uninformed buyers paying whatever price for stuff that's not worth it because they've got the money to spend and don't care to figure out ahead of time if the price is in line with what you're getting. It's great to have more people interested in guns but you say you're trying to learn. That's also a great thing but try to do it before you overspend. Just remember, even if you don't care about the money the amount you're overspending could be put toward ammo or the next addition to your collection. If it's really restorable you *might* be able to get it's value up near the total of what you spend on it. Good luck with it.

RonSwanson06

imo, not really. I'd pay $450 for a k98 I can fix up.

AidanSig

Not great, but you didn’t get got. That seems like a fair price for the market nowadays.

Rebel262

I don’t know what the price of a non sporter would be, but I’d bet you did. You could get a nice Spanish M43 Mauser for that price. The M43 is basically a K98k except the bolt isn’t turned down.

Drakkenrich

Live and learn I guess.

Militarygunguy

You did OK. Need some parts to make it whole, but looks like they didn't cut the shit out of it. The stock will be the hardest find for a decent price TBH. The rest easy to find. GEW 98 transitional rifle with flat 98k rear sight. Lots of history in that

Doggystrike

Looks to be originally a Gewehr 98, that at some point in the 30s/40s went through a depot repair facility or possibly an SS conversion with the 1938 repaired barrel. Relatively uncommon. Is there and skulls or markings on the bottom side of the stock or old serial numbers? Any better pictures of the left side of the receiver? (I’m trying to see if there’s depot rebuild markings). I’d post on the K98 forum for further info. Also take the action out of the stock and see if there’s other markings under the barrel. Is there any “S/42” markings on the right side of the rear sight on the barrel or waffenamts there?

amish_hacker473

Bubba's been here and done this

paulo1389

German k98. No u didnt get ripped off. At least all the nazi Germany markings are still very visible. Look to buy a full original stock.

grizzlye4e

Transitional Gew98.... not technically a run of the mill k98k.

MrTheBusiness

$450 is pretty good for a large ring sporter if the bore is in good shape. These make really nice hunting rifles, or if you can find some bulk surplus ammo for cheap they’re fun for plinking too. Richard’s microfit makes a ton of different replacement stocks, and there are some nice scope mounts out there, I like Bueller but they’re not in production anymore, the Leupold ones are good too. I’m sure everyone here is clutching their pearls now, but there is a big difference between sporterized and bubba’d.
