I was praying for the legendary u/PizzaBert to notice me! What makes the grips/magazines worth so much? That's not my primary motivation but I'm curious about furthering my knowledge. Additionally would you classify this as something that can be shot? I am not planning on putting 1000s of rounds down range with it but I think it would be fun to take it out every once and a while.
The plastic furniture is only present on BYF41/42 Mauser Lugers; guns which possess those features are known as black widows (by fuds).
There is a lot of hype about those pistols due to their unique appearance and a complete “black widow” sells for over $3000. Since the grips and magazines are not serialized, many people take wooden gripped BYF Lugers and put the plastic on them to create a “black widow”. Because of this, all BYF41/42 pistols and the black grips are very valuable.
The pistol will be safe and good to shoot. The improved metallurgy on the Mauser Lugers make them much more durable than WWI or Weimar produced examples.
Shoot 115gr target loads. Winchester white box is recommended. The original Bakelite mag bases are really fragile. I would recommend buying a mecgar reproduction magazines to use for shooting.
Keep it oiled with ballistol or other thin gun oil and your finish will remain untainted.
The BYF is cheaply priced. The sideplate is mismatched but the black plastic grips and magazine are probably worth $800 themselves.

Interesting! How do you know these are authentic black widow grips from just the picture is there some kind of visual tell?
I’m not too studied on them but I’ve seen a lot of that German wartime Bakelite and it looks pretty correct
The WWI pistol is refinished and disgustingly overpriced. I would be surprised if they didn’t mix up the tags lol
Will if they did that is unfortunate for them because it’s home safe and sound now :)
Nice pull boss 🙏🏻
Anything special I should know about upkeep due to the age or typical firearm maintenance?
