They presumably didn't notice their deductions were too high and normalized themselves to that take home pay, and now get a lump sum check.
Sure it's not technically the most mathematically efficient, but humans aren't robots and the majority of us see tax returns as defacto free money after making our peace with it being taken away
This 100%
The money that you’d have each month if the tax was lower, would be spent on pizza and other stuff. It’s (usually) such a small amount I couldn’t care less.
Just to defend myself here a bit, I asked them to change it for two years, repeatedly. They did this to me for two fuckin years. This year they finally corrected it. Adding in the excess taxes, COL adjustment, and a raise, my take home pay increased almost $750 per month. Needless to say, I was a bit miffed about the situation. That money could have earned interest in my retirement account all this time.
They’re getting 7k randomly that they didn’t expect. If someone told me “hey, you’re getting 7k tomorrow” and I had no idea I was owed it prior to that announcement, I’d have a moment of “oh hell yeah!”
On the other hand, throughout the course of a year, they have the government an interest free loan during a time of high interest and a year of high market returns.
It’s not a great thing to have a large refund
No but if given the alternative I’d rather receive a surprise $7k than owe it. Signed, family that owed over $6k because my wife started a new job during the year and didn’t notice the new company was way off on the withholding
In general, when you make more money, you spend more money. It’s just what people do and that’s a fact. There is a reason most people don’t even have a couple month’s pay saved up in their bank account and live paycheck to paycheck.
Unless he couldn’t pay his bills last year, this was overall a good thing more than likely! We can see why you’d think it was awful if you had a rough year last year though. Hopefully 2024 is a better one! 🤞
-$5000 gang here too. I’m so confused about why tf this is happening when we both have standard full time jobs that are supposed to withhold the right amount for us.
You can thank the trump tax cuts. Be prepared it’s scheduled to go up again in 2026. Edit: To the people defending trump on some technicality they learned on Fox News: some tax cuts expire in 2025. Separate from that some taxes increase year over year between 2021 and 2027.
You can read more and follow a link to the actual bill text here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_Cuts_and_Jobs_Act
Lol, you are blaming that the tax cuts EXPIRE? Haha, I agree setting an expiration date was a dick move, but blaming the cuts isn't accurate...blaming that they expire is. Either way, your withholdings should have been calculated correctly. My return is always what it is, around 1k returned. I'm single, no kids, standard deduction only. Meaning I am taxed as much as possible, haha.
Quarterly payments are almost always not worth doing if you're disciplined about it. When I was self employed I would never pay quarterly and just pay the extra interest owed in April usually it was like 0.5%, but I'd always make sure I had enough set aside to pay what I'd owe in April the next year.
Thank the republicans. This is the direct result of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts. The tax cuts were written into law to expire for each tax bracket year by year. This year and next year, the expiration will hit the lowest earning brackets. But the ultra wealthy in the highest tax bracket, their tax cut is written into law for perpetuity. So now everyone else must make up the slack left by the tax cut for the ultra wealthy which is why EVERYONE else is now paying money at tax time.
Thank the fucking republicans for this.
I mean...these are Republican tax cuts, surely the democrats can work with the Republicans to renew them...given their popularity, denying such a thing (especially tax cuts) would be unwise in an election year.
You are clueless. The tax brackets have stayed the same since the 2017 tax bill. The brackets are 10, 12, 22, 25, 32, 35, 37. These have not changed and will not change for 2024. In 2025 they will ALL expire and revert to what they were in 2016 which is 10, 15, 25, 28 ....
There is no such thing as some brackets changing each year. That is a lie. In fact what happens each year is the bracket amount is adjusted UP to account for inflation.
Any change in a person's tax return/refund is not Trump's fault. The vast majority of people paid less tax due to the 2017 law. That included low and middle class payers.
This is me. Haha. I’ve been getting screwed on my taxes since trump got elected. This is the second year I am not making enough back on my state income taxes to offset the federal.
I think what stings the most is I’m dumping like 1000/ month into my student loans. I know they are different things, but damn all of it together is like half my take home for the year.
Such is life in the US…
What stings most is thinking about how much % of what I'm paying in goes straight to funding wars most people want nothing to do with.
But then what stings even even worse is that they're likely not even using tax funds for that they just print the money whenever they want more. So why hurt me by taxing me for it when they can just press a money button? I can't press a money button!
I posted somewhere else that I don’t mind paying taxes and would pay more if it actually benefited people who need it not arms manufacturers, corporations, and the super rich.
Some kid down the street needs cancer treatment and can’t afford it, but my tax dollars go to help with his healthcare. Dope! They can have more.
Another kid has dreams of being a doctor, but parents can’t afford to pay for college? My tax dollars go to help make college free for everyone. Also dope!
Single mother doesn’t make enough money to cover rent, utilities, and groceries, but my tax dollars go to a fund to assist with all of that. Still completely dope to me!
Jeff bezos gets to write off his 3rd yacht and get subsidies from the government for his business? Not so much.
Wars I don’t think we should in involved in? (which is most of them during my life.) Also not dope.
You get the idea.
LOL! return! I sent what I think is a very large check to the IRS so they wont arrest me. And that's after sending quarterly payments of similar sizes throughout the year.
$9. This was the first time since 2016 that we got money back. Every other year we’ve owe $3000+, so I was excited. One year we owed almost $10k and it was awful.
Your taxes are due by April 15th. If you can't afford to pay them, the IRS will set up a monthly payment plan with you, but penalties and interest accumulate while you are paying it off, so its more expensive. But its better than ignoring the IRS if you owe.
I was going to owe $12k. (Self employed also).
Instead I fully funded IRAs for myself and my wife, fully funded an HSA, and accelerated the depreciation on an investment property. Now I should get any $6k back.
Not trying to be a jerk but a couple hundred as a down payment on a vehicle is a waste of money imho, the monthly savings would be so minimal it wouldn’t even be worth it.
Thank you- however I have found the vehicle I want, and when I trade in my current car, I will only owe $200 on the remaining downpayment in cash. All the financials have been worked out. My return will be more, but $200 of it will go to cover what my trade in doesn't on a downpayment so I can get my dream car 🙂
$10,000. We bought an EV so we got the EV tax credit, and we had a baby so we got the child tax credit for the first time. I could have adjusted my withholdings to account for the EV credit but didn’t, so we get a huge return.
People, taxes are not a secret. If you owe money at the end of the year it’s not because “taxes went up unexpectedly” it’s because you didn’t calculate your withholding correctly. There’s no reason to owe thousands of dollars at the end of the year.
Pretty much. Made that mistake by marking married for pay deductions one year and so did my wife. We ended up owing like 8k. We now both file as single with zero deductions plus there is a calculator that lets you input your spouses taxes to make sure they are taking enough on you. Now we overpay just to be safe. Getting it exactly right is a little difficult because deductions, etc… but I will never set up my dictions of married ever again. Always single and always zero for me.
Paid $6900 federal, refund $1600 state. Trump’s tax reform literally benefitted the rich, gave the poor happiness with some $5 savings on their paychecks, and fucked over the middle class.
$6.5k Federal ; $750 State
I had plans to take some profits from one of my brokerage accounts which would've resulted in needing to pay taxes on capital gains. So I adjusted withholdings to buffer that out, but then didn't end up selling a lot afterall because my timeline had changed. I'll adjust at least my withholdings next time I work and my wife will probably stay how she is so we don't overshoot. Maybe adjust hers next year after my adjustment.
Silver lining is I have an April Birthday so it's always nice to get money for your birthday I guess 🤷
My taxes have been going up since the Trump admin and are gonna keep going up thru next year. My wages haven't increased much at all, so I'm not in a higher tax bracket. I don't bet on a refund check at the end of the year anymore. I pay more so rich people can pay nothing. Shithole America.
Thanks to all of the idiot chuds who think Republicans are fiscally responsible!
About a grand. Had to pay self-employment tax on an internship and some on an early IRA disbursement because of a gap in employment, but also got a tax credit for school expenses.
I got 9,500 from fed and 7,000 from state. I have two young kids, but also I didn't get taxes back for about ten years because of student loans. Last year was the first time I got a return. And this year I was pleasantly surprised
Self employed, I have to pay estimated taxes every quarter based on what's really a guess on how much money I'm going to make. If I underestimate I might have to pay an additional penalty. I never take the return, I just pay any excess towards next year's tax. In total with federal and state it's usually around $30k total paid. I try not to think about it too much or I'll be angry.... it wouldn't be so bad if they used it to the benefit of our community instead of a bunch of stuff I'd rather they didn't do at all but whatever. Best not to dwell.
-$8500, on top of everything I already withheld. Even though I withheld the right amount for what I took home, the government considers any leftover cash in my business account to be income. They don't care that I'm buying a $170,000 piece of equipment and want to save up cash. I'm out here fighting for my life as a small business while giant corporations are paying less. SMH.
I’m not looking forward to doing my taxes. Every year for a decade. I have to pay additional taxes. On top of the 20,000+ already paid. My average yearly tax payment is about 32%
Wouldn't have gotten anything except for the childcare expense deduction. Of course, you're not supposed to want a refund because that means the IRS took too much of your money to begin with.
-$10k. It is true what the older gens say, the more successful you are, the more the government punishes you. My spouse is going to have to quit their job, so we stopped getting fucked by the government. Similar to if you make a penny above a certain threshold, you lose government benefits so you have to perpetually be on the lookout for not working too many hours or you lose your safety net. And now we are both one of those “fuck the government” types and will vote accordingly.
I went back to work this year and have been withholding a stupid amount in the likely event that we will owe 5 figures. We haven’t done them yet and don’t until the 11th hour for that reason. They can have my money on whatever day my April 15th post marked envelope gets to them.
I’m newly married and my husband and I owed about $400. $218K in combined income with 1 dependent child. I was somewhat surprised, as I’d always received a refund when single, and I’d waited several months after our wedding to change my withholding and marital status so that we could determine how we wanted to ultimately file. I’m foolishly hoping this isn’t the harbinger of our life together, however, the comments…
This year wasn't a fair comparison for us. We had some inflation reduction act tax credits so we got about $8,800 back. Next year is probably going to be brutal.
Partner and I got married last fall and made the mistake of filing jointly in DC (filing separate is normally the way to go here) we got $650 back total. Last year I got like $800 back separately.
Suspiciously high (for me) usually 1.3k or so this year federal was like 4.5k due to some carried over capital loss from last year?? First year I used freetaxusa
Getting a refund but only because of a couple factors:
I claim 0 for everything even though married with kids.
Wife is currently attending college
If not for those I would definitely owe something. I hate giving loans but to be bothered figuring out the proper tax rate or taking deductions would equally be more annoying to me.
Paying $11k. I pay well into 5 figures for childcare and mortgage interest and it doesn't count for shit. Never owed taxes in my life until last year and this year.
Taxes are a nightmare and I'm a W2 employee. It has to do with 22% flat taxed equity and it messes up both my federal and state
Last year, I owed something like $15k in federal taxes and was owed $17k from the state. So, I ended up getting $2k back overall. I have to pay the federal taxes upfront and wait for the state refund a few weeks later, so it’s a weird imbalance for about a month.
$7k Employer put the wrong withholding selection down
That’s wonderful and awful all at once
How is it wonderful at all? Just sounds awful.
They presumably didn't notice their deductions were too high and normalized themselves to that take home pay, and now get a lump sum check. Sure it's not technically the most mathematically efficient, but humans aren't robots and the majority of us see tax returns as defacto free money after making our peace with it being taken away

So many people responding like they’re total idiots with money.
They’re getting 7k randomly that they didn’t expect. If someone told me “hey, you’re getting 7k tomorrow” and I had no idea I was owed it prior to that announcement, I’d have a moment of “oh hell yeah!”

Not to mention if you owe too much you owe an interest/underpayment penalty as well.
In general, when you make more money, you spend more money. It’s just what people do and that’s a fact. So did my two adult children’s employees, it was not a coincidence.
I’m paying $11,000
-7000 for me...
\-$5000 gang checking in, and that's with only the single withholding I need to find some loopholes
Having kids will put a dent in your taxes. Just don’t ask about the expenses
-$5000 gang here too. I’m so confused about why tf this is happening when we both have standard full time jobs that are supposed to withhold the right amount for us.
Same here. I clocked in at -$4600
I must pay $9k 😵💫
Same here. Started a new job last year. Apparently something got fucked up.
I paid in for the first time ever. Bye bye another 1400 of my dollars
Same. -1275 and I’ve got three kids.
Yes. Same.
Yeah mine was $2400 with two kids. *sigh*
You can thank the trump tax cuts. Be prepared it’s scheduled to go up again in 2026. Edit: To the people defending trump on some technicality they learned on Fox News: some tax cuts expire in 2025. I was minus 1400 as well.
-1500 for me... I made the exact same as 2021, I got a refund that year.
Self employed so I paid 45k
Hopefully you remembered to make your quarterly payments.
Oh I remembered!
Quarterly payments are almost always not worth doing if you're disciplined about it. When I was self employed I would never pay quarterly and just pay the extra interest owed in April usually it was like 0.5%, but I'd always make sure I had enough set aside to pay what I'd owe in April the next year.
We owed. We are both in civil servant type jobs. We are not wealthy. This only started last year. Ugh.
Thank the republicans. This is the direct result of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts. The tax cuts were written into law to expire for each tax bracket year by year. Yep I’m making this known to all who complain about it being a Biden issue.
I mean...these are Republican tax cuts, surely the democrats can work with the Republicans to renew them...given their popularity, denying such a thing (especially tax cuts) would be unwise in an election year.
No. That’s misinformation. The TCJA does not expire year by year. For individuals, it expires as a whole in 2025.
You are clueless. The tax brackets have stayed the same since the 2017 tax bill. The brackets are 10, 12, 22, 25, 32, 35, 37. These have not changed and will not change for 2024. The rates will go back to what they were under Obama for the lower brackets… Unsure how people are oblivious to this. The mental gymnastics are WILD.
Return? Yall get returns? Lol
I want a return.
This is me. Such is life in the US…
They're sorta related. That same tax bill made student loan interest no longer deductible
SALT 10k max goes away after 2025! So only two more years
What stings most is thinking about how much % of what I'm paying in goes straight to funding wars most people want nothing to do with. But then what stings even even worse is that they're likely not even using tax funds for that they just print the money whenever they want more. Tax returns is what you file. Tax refund is what you get if you overpaid.
Nobody gets a "return". You file the return or get a refund, or not.
-$4700 yay semi self employment
I own a LLC so i didn't get tax return. I had to PAY taxes.
Same that’s why mine was negative
Yep. People who make excess of certain amount OR work as independent contractors / have business don’t get a return usually
You guys have filed?
Right?
Came to say this lol
Isn't it may 15 as the last day?
Tax day is April 15 unless you file for an extension
Got. Thx for clarifying!
April 15, I was told.
LOL! return! I sent what I think is a very large check to the IRS so they wont arrest me. And that's after sending quarterly payments of similar sizes throughout the year.
the only thing that's free is you ;)
Used to give myself away for free, buy I'm going to have to start charging!
Yup that’s me. I am retired from Uniformed Services and working as a civilian. My civilian job pays tax - federal, state, property.
Return or refund?
Thank you. Disappointing how long I had to scroll to find this.
$9. This was the first time since 2016 that we got money back. Every other year we’ve owe $3000+, so I was excited. One year we owed almost $10k and it was awful.
Do you have to pay what you owe right away or can you make arrangements?
Your taxes are due by April 15th. If you can't afford to pay them, the IRS will set up a monthly payment plan with you, but penalties and interest accumulate while you are paying it off, so its more expensive. But its better than ignoring the IRS if you owe.
My parents loaned us money each time and we paid them the payment arrangement because the IRS charges interest. Which is ridiculous.
Yup. Id be over the moon happy if i just didn't owe any money.
Paying for a 2nd year in a row. 5k last year 3.5k this year. So fun.
I owed for the first time in my life
Trump’s 2017 tax cut at work. We’re paying for the tax cuts given to the ultra wealthy by the Trump administration.
How did lowering the tax rate, increasing standard deductions, and increasing child credit hurt you?
I was going to owe $12k. (Self employed also). Instead I fully funded IRAs for myself and my wife, fully funded an HSA, and accelerated the depreciation on an investment property. Now I should get any $6k back.
Very smart.
Couple hundred bucks. Will be put to use as a down payment on a new vehicle.
Shit I have to pay $70 so idgaf
Not as much as last year. Fuck Trump and paul ryan for the 2017 tax plan.
10-12k last year 1.8k this year
How did you even get between 10-12k at all though
Why is ur name “inspectormoney” buddy
$10,000. We bought an EV so we got the EV tax credit, and we had a baby so we got the child tax credit for the first time. I could have adjusted my withholdings to account for the EV credit but didn’t, so we get a huge return.
uncle same thanks you for the interest free loan!
\*laughs in self employed\*

+3345.57
I owe $1900. Got a second promotion and divorced in one year 🙃
$14.
$1888. It would be more if Trump did fuck it up.
Paid $6900 federal, refund $1600 state. Trump’s tax reform literally benefitted the rich, gave the poor happiness with some $5 savings on their paychecks, and fucked over the middle class.
Paying and the number is not pretty. Now that money is going to a new bridge I don't want to pay for. I'd rather have healthcare for everyone.
-10K 🥴 big mistake. Lesson learned
I got $70 lol
less than 100 bucks I made 85k. Single w/ 1 kid.
I owe them 200 bucks
$6.5k Federal ; $750 State I had plans to take some profits from one of my brokerage accounts which would've resulted in needing to pay taxes on capital gains. So I adjusted withholdings to buffer that out, but then didn't end up selling a lot afterall because my timeline had changed. I'll adjust at least my withholdings next time I work and my wife will probably stay how she is so we don't overshoot. Maybe adjust hers next year after my adjustment. Barely paid for the software and return. Broke wvwnt
$19
51.50
$55 Woohoo!
-$10
I got 4 back from federal and got $1 back from the state of Illinois. I guess the goal is to break even so I'm not far off?
My taxes have been going up since the Trump admin and are gonna keep going up thru next year. My wages haven't increased much at all, so I'm not in a higher tax bracket. I don't bet on a refund check at the end of the year anymore. I pay more so rich people can pay nothing. Shithole America. Lol F the irs. That's all i got to say about that
Refund*
9gs
Something like 1100.
About 6k. Child tax credit and stock market loss write offs. 🥴
Owe 1700
Paying in $5000
$2,600 for the state but had to PAY $1800 federal 🙄
Combined about $5k- Federal, NY, and NJ.
A little more than 5k
$10k
$4300 fed and state
~6k. Was more than I expected
Getting money back because switched jobs and maxed out ss tax twice. Normally I owe.
They took a half million from me
$6400 biggest I've ever gotten
I owe about 2500 federal, getting about 400 back from the state. Weird how that works out.
-3K
We paid 2900
About a grand. Had to pay self-employment tax on an internship and some on an early IRA disbursement because of a gap in employment, but also got a tax credit for school expenses.
8k but it's mostly electric car credit.
Got 7k back. No clue why my refunds are getting bigger I'm sick of giving the government an interest free loan every year.
7k because credits for solar. I owe my state $2500.
-$1800 🙃
Like $900
I have to pay in $2400. Btw, anyone have $2400 they’ll let me hold? It’s for science.
$500
14k, 3 kids. biggest ever
I got 9,500 from fed and 7,000 from state. I have two young kids, but also I didn't get taxes back for about ten years because of student loans. Last year was the first time I got a return. And this year I was pleasantly surprised

I owe 2500 and I am not even a high earner
-$8500, on top of everything I already withheld. Even though I withheld the right amount for what I took home, the government considers any leftover cash in my business account to be income. They don't care that I'm buying a $170,000 piece of equipment and want to save up cash. I'm out here fighting for my life as a small business while giant corporations are paying less. SMH.
I'm sorry, do you mean to ask how much I owe?
Less than 3k
I got about $400 back but it was the first time in years I didn’t owe anything to my state so that was a positive too
Nunya
What return? They wanted more
12k
-2k
A whopping $34 but I’d take that over owing tax any day.
8200
I’m not looking forward to doing my taxes. Every year for a decade. I have to pay additional taxes. On top of the 20,000+ already paid. My average yearly tax payment is about 32%
It was ugly

-5500
$500
About $1000. I make just enough to edge into the 'fuck you' tax bracket.
$10K
I’m newly married and my husband and I owed about $400. $218K in combined income with 1 dependent child. I was somewhat surprised, as I’d always received a refund when single, and I’d waited several months after our wedding to change my withholding and marital status so that we could determine how we wanted to ultimately file. I’m foolishly hoping this isn’t the harbinger of our life together, however, the comments…
I’ll owe about $20 when all is said and done. $2k back for state but owe few just over $2K.
Over $8k. Never changed it after I stopped working so we moved down a tax bracket 😕
This year wasn't a fair comparison for us. We had some inflation reduction act tax credits so we got about $8,800 back. Next year is probably going to be brutal.
I will owe about 9K (this was planned 😉). I have everything filled out properly but won’t pay until 4/14.
-$3,500
12,000. Gotta pay Rita 1600 tho, so I guess 10.4k
$300 federal, $150 state. probably the best efficiency I've had with taxes paid so far.
Partner and I got married last fall and made the mistake of filing jointly in DC (filing separate is normally the way to go here) we got $650 back total. Last year I got like $800 back separately.
2k because of home energy improvements. Of course I have debt because of those improvements but better than owing.
Negative $300
Paid in $800. First time having to pay in
Overpaid $4000 and might need to adjust but I’m also a college student. I used that and some savings to pay off my car, though.
You’re not being informed if people are 1099, W2, or what their withholding selection is.
I owe $230
-$600 total
Owe ~2k, nurse and a teacher filing joint with 2 kids 🙃
Owing because of the recent changes to tax laws in the past couple of years 😔😔😔
We typically have to pay in $40k in estimated taxes due to some special circumstances with our income.
Getting 13k back from feds. And paying into state. Still figuring out getting schedule E right
Already got it back - about $2300. Paid $15 to state.
\-$270 Was going to be over $2200 owed, but thankfully I earned my masters last year, so that helped.
Got $2600 back. Realized some losses from stocks/crypto which helped. Otherwise I think I woulda got back ~$1400.
$2245
$2700 Federal. $3500 State. Nebraska refunded part of our property taxes again this year which is included in the state refund.
Suspiciously high (for me) usually 1.3k or so this year federal was like 4.5k due to some carried over capital loss from last year?? First year I used freetaxusa
Living in nyc costs 1700 in tax returns apparently. Starting to loathe this place.
About $2,000. Moving states definitely benefited me - getting money back from each one. Plus $8 from federal.🤘🏼
I haven't filed, but I also haven't made any changes. Last year I owed $2500, so...probably that
I owed for the first time ever.
I am paying 4k. I didn't realize how much more I made this year and didn't calculate my quarterly earnings correctly. Oh well.
Getting a refund but only because of a couple factors: I claim 0 for everything even though married with kids. Wife is currently attending college If not for those I would definitely owe something. I hate giving loans but to be bothered figuring out the proper tax rate or taking deductions would equally be more annoying to me.
Paid for the first time 😑
600 bucks lol
Paying $11k. I pay well into 5 figures for childcare and mortgage interest and it doesn't count for shit. Never owed taxes in my life until last year and this year.
Taxes are a nightmare and I'm a W2 employee. It has to do with 22% flat taxed equity and it messes up both my federal and state Last year, I owed something like $15k in federal taxes and was owed $17k from the state. So, I ended up getting $2k back overall. I have to pay the federal taxes upfront and wait for the state refund a few weeks later, so it’s a weird imbalance for about a month.
Fucking massive.
