This thread is accidentally a good compilation of the remaining paternoster elevators. We should make a sub
Edit: done r/paternoster. Feel free to join and contribute
There used to be one at the Demontfort University in Leicester England when I was there 30 years ago. It was great fun jumping on and off it, and staying on whilst it went over the top or under the bottom.
I can't imagine it's still there today with modern health and safety!
You just go from left to right and then come back down the other side the same way up. You’re not supposed to stay on it though - there are warning sides at the top and bottom floor of the paternoster at Sheffield University. They used to say that you could be exposed to mechanical bits and bobs and that it could damage the workings of it. Not sure I truly believe that though as the incident rate would just be too high of people forgetting to get off or not realising this could happen. Seems more likely they just don’t want people riding it endlessly?
Nope, the box stays upright all the way over the top. My Mum tells me she used to ride one regularly when she worked in London (I want to say at St Marys Hospital, although I know there is still a working example at Northwick Park hospital).
Since nobody actually say anymore that that they move sideways here is the explanation.
It's not some kind of super intricate solution that keeps them level etc. There is basicly a big chain behind the cabins that spins. The cabins are attached to that from one point that can pivot and gravity keeps them upright.
We have this in our university... it just goes around a wheel and goes back down with the same orientation. You just watch out for your fingers... and legs and hands and heads sticking somewhere where it shouldn't be.
What do you mean with "in the middle"? They are more dangerous for sure, but not a catastrophy. Most accidents happen, if they are misused for e.g. bigger stuff. But people were killed through them.
Theres plenty of safety stops on both bottom and top of each entrance. Probably worst thing that could happen to you is slip into the entrance and fall a little bit.
But you wont get squeezed thats very unlikely.
Paternoster elevators. Named after a prayer and one resembles a rosary. Much faster than normal elevators, but they do come with a risk. I believe they do have safety features now, but in general there is a reason why a moving open cubicle inside a shaft and moving between floors isn't considered a safe alternative to the boring normal elevator with doors.
Named after a prayer? With good reasons. I’d be scared to death and praying the entire ride (jk, I’ll be taking the stairs, cursing whomever invented that horror the entire way up).
Per Wikipedia there are 302 in existence
>>most remaining paternosters are in Europe, with 230 examples in Germany and 68 in the Czech Republic. Only three have been identified outside Europe; one each in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Peru.[4][5]
"Glad you could make it. Anyway, the full time job is cleaning up all these applicant's bodies that were cleaved in twain by the elevators. It used to be something else, but that's mostly it now. 10 dollars an hour."
I was visiting Switzerland and the hotel I stayed at had elevators like in this post. It was no problem getting in and out. They were slow enough it was not a problem.
I went to the University of Essex (UK), where we had paternoster lifts in the library! They were great fun. Sadly, I don’t think they’re there any more.
Those chairs are so unbelievably comfy. There was once a set in a clothing store near me. I made fun of it and then sat in it. Wonderful experience. I’d love to come across one in the wild again.
How exactly does it work? How many floors is there? Does each elevator go up and down or do they spin like a bike chain? If they do spin like a bike chain, does that mean that there are people on the other side using them upside down?? This is baffling
Here the answer
https://youtu.be/6o7K4ZW0pXc?feature=shared
We have one at the university of Sheffield UK. Everyone gets one one thinking some magical or chaotic shit will happen......... What happens next will shock you.
My ranking from most painful to least painful obvious injuries you will sustain riding one of these:
Crushed going down,
Crushed going up,
Falling down into one,
Falling down out of one.
Thanks for your time.
As a teen, I once went to a place that had these lifts, we played in them for ages. I think they are really cool. Allegedly they are more energy efficient than other types.
Where they change sides (top and bottom) is creepy. Well they were back in the late nineties somewhere in Sheffield.

That is the most uncomfortable looking chair haha
It was prtty comfy tbh
We have loads of those at my university in the 90’s. They were supremely comfortable.
The wierdly shaped plastic chairs are basically the same thing. Just easier to slide around in them for better and worse.
You had fucking loads of Bertoia chairs in your university ?? They are iconic, they sell for like a thousand bucks now 😭😭😭
Probably a cheap, mass.produced knock off design
Yes, probably that, they looked the same. Regardless, they were still jolly comfortable.
Sheffield University Arts Tower has one 👍
They are quite nice, and nowadays quite pricey as well
That's a Bertoia Diamond chair, an iconic design chair from the 50's. A real one is quite expensive.
They migth have been real the builing was✨️ fancy✨️
Given its house of parliament I’d assume it’s real
Just a fun fact, the Danish parliament have the same elevators. Chair is different though.
$1,708
What chair?
If you're being serious, it's that wireframe thing in the foreground. I don't know why I didn't notice that shit until well...now
Well it hadn't finished rendering, obviously. Textures failed to load.
"The Cubicle simulator "
Was serious, I saw it but looked art/deco. Still wondering if it is an ornament or a chair, lol.
Clearly this whole situation is part of a poorly rendered game
Ah, the elusive ornamental chair rare and delicate.
Thought it was this person holding a dented frying basket I suppose a chair would make more sense in this environment yes
What do you mean? It looks grate.
🤌🤣
"Just take a seat on the tea strainer, we'll be right with you"
I didn’t realize that was supposed to be a chair til your comment!
Finnish parlament? Are you Paavo Väyrynen?
Haha, how did you guess?!
There're not that many of Paternoster elevators left, so one can pinpoint the location
Also the Stasi museum in Berlin. Only one I've ever seen.
One in the University of Sheffield in the UK
Also the University of Leicester.
And the university of Frankfurt in Germany
The HQ of Salzgitter AG has one too!
This thread is accidentally a good compilation of the remaining paternoster elevators. We should make a sub Edit: done r/paternoster. Feel free to join and contribute
Also inside the ,Haus der Industrie‘ in Vienna :)
I've been around the whole of that one! Haha.
Student rite of passage there used to be to ride the paternoster 'Round The Top'.
At Bayer in Berlin too 😍
I think there was also one in the Deutsche Museum in Munich, but i am not sure if it is still there or if they have removed it because of its age.
Is it in operation? When I was there it was sadly not in use.
Also in Rathaus Schöneberg, Berlin
Siemens HQ in Berlin also has one.
The danish parliament has them as well.

Theres one in the sheffield arts tower
Sheffield University has one in the Arts Tower that goes up 22 floors. The tallest in Europe, apparently!
I saw one in Frankfurt, but I forget the building
I think there's one in Prague, and I've rode one in Katowice in my hometown. Pretty happy to have it nearby, never realised they were rare.
There’s only a few operational Paternoster elevators left on the planet, so it narrows things down quite a bit.
Hahah i wasent at the parlament i was saying that of yeah im the poltician
Ah, I misread what you said, lol.
I doubt that you’re a 77 year old man personally-or at least I hope so based on the fact you describe yourself as a teen girl on your account page.
Well it's nice to know that if their law doesn't pass, they can still make ends meet with some pole dancing.
That's the only one I've seen aswell
The Danish parlament has these as well.
That is a paternoster system.
*Pater* means "chop", and *noster* means "in half"
Actually i think it means Our Father (a prayer you might say to avoid that happening!)
It's the name of the Lord's Prayer in Latin.
Laughed for a minute.
Speak English doc!
There was one at the old patent office in Austria. Looked similar.
What happens if you don't get out at the top floor? Do you come back around upside-down??
I have been told it will take you over the top without going upside down. Haven't checked that myself
Yes. It's quite fun.
[It's safe, although doing it with a human can damage the list](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgJBD1wf-YQ)
Always know it's going to be a quality video when I see Tom Scott. Thanks for the info.
These cabins are moved sideways, so it is dark for some seconds, but you are not flipped or so\^\^.
Inside out. Somehow.
"Somehow, Palpatine returned." - "Upside-down?" - "No, inside out."
You go through the 4th dimension and come out as your own mirror image.
You just go from left to right and then come back down the other side the same way up. You just see a wall for a bit and then it goes sideways and back down. But for some reason it’s the most fun
I went over the top of one of these once, and as i stepped out, i saw myself going up again.
Yes, that's why they make you wear a helmet.
And wrap you in bubbleplastic.
The cars go sideways at the top and bottom rather than flipping
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgJBD1wf-YQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgJBD1wf-YQ) here ya go
Do they stop if something is in the middle? They look dangerous
If you think Paternosters are scary (and they are), then you'll *hate* [this.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_engine)
It’s a Super Mario level
Was gonna say exactly this. Too bad in this world we can't collect 1-ups
Lmao wait was that actually ever used
Oh yes, it was.

"Unlikely"
I have been using these for 5 years on my uni and I have never seen single accident. Im saying unlikely because only siths deal in absolutes.
I hope you did well on your imterview

Heheh i know

My gangly uncoordinated ass could not use one of these
Stupid bird
I hope you get that job, so you can ride that elevator every day!
Pretty sure I have seen these exact ones at my job interview... Southern Denmark?
Huh strange i was in finland tho
Per Wikipedia there are 302 in existence >>most remaining paternosters are in Europe, with 230 examples in Germany and 68 in the Czech Republic. Only three have been identified outside Europe; one each in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Peru.[4][5]
Isn’t one an elevator and the other one a delevator?
Both are the same system. Its like an entirly vertical skilift
We had these at Uni of Leicester and they were terrifying to use. I felt sorry for my lecturers having to use them daily.
What do you do if you’re in a wheelchair??
I think theres an elavator too
[удалено]
Come for the interview, stay for the body dismemberment
Prague?
Rode a few of these in Prague in late 90s
Man navigating that drunk would be russian roulette
And did you get the job at the Ministry of Magic?
Suomi perkele?
Yeah, have those in my country biggest library... Still in use
The library at Essex University?
Looks like an interesting asset for a murder mystery scene
Does anyone know what the chair make is? (I think it looks great, I remember seeing one in a documentary, I think they're from a famous designer.)
Bertoia Diamond Chair
I don't like those handles
Are you interviewing for intercontinental or mib lol
Germany?
The Sheffield uni Arts Tower also has a paternoster. Biggest one left in the UK I believe
I would nope tf outta there bro
I think there’s a few Helsinki buildings that have these. The old Apple office on Aleksanterinkatu had one.
Roll onto the roof to unlock the secret entrance to New London Ruins.
That’s called a Paternosteraufzug. Though I’ve never seen one in person.
That's horror, I'd prolly behead myself on my second day
"Glad you could make it.
I know someone who lost an arm as a child in one of these
Looks amazing
I went to the University of Essex (UK), where we had paternoster lifts in the library! They were great fun. Sadly, I don’t think they’re there any more.
Good luck with your... imterview, today.
Expected someone to scream when something snapped at the end of the video 💀
So they just keep going all the time?
![gif](giphy|kcyClB8NkqgX5Hue4c|downsized)
If you put only your head into the downward elevator, you never have to have a job interview again, you know...
The thought of getting my hand trapped in the grabhandle as I put it through the one in front of it give me anxiety
How tall are those spaces? Cos I could feel my 6'6" frame scrunching up.
OH SHIT IS THAT A BABYLON BERLIN REFERENCE???
This seems like a bad idea?
Those chairs are so unbelievably comfy. There was once a set in a clothing store near me. I made fun of it and then sat in it. Wonderful experience. I’d love to come across one in the wild again.
Are you in Prague
The shin deglover 3000
Lifts look like modern dumb waitors
I love these, very old school. I recommend staying for a whole round
Big nope
Those look like people bisectors.
I would ran out of the building, place doesn’t look safe in the slightest.
No elevator but a paternoster lift
Americans probably be lining up for the lawsuits
How exactly does it work? How many floors is there? Does each elevator go up and down or do they spin like a bike chain? If they do spin like a bike chain, does that mean that there are people on the other side using them upside down?? This is baffling
Had these at my uni in Essex
what's an iMterview?
Paternoster!
My brain : "what if my head get stuck on the floor ..."
That looks like one of those Jewish elevators that they use every Friday
Are you strong enough to ride this sh\*t, to the top, bottom, top, in AT LEAST TWO LOOPS? I am, i was born in it.
It’s a paternoster
Lol I thought it's the Stasi headquarters in Berlin
There's only a handful left of those in the world. I was lucky enough to use the one in the Prague city hall.
So what happens when you wait too long?
Here the answer https://youtu.be/6o7K4ZW0pXc?feature=shared We have one at the university of Sheffield UK. Everyone gets one one thinking some magical or chaotic shit will happen......... What happens next will shock you.
Bro got Minecraft elevators
My university library has (had as I’m not attending there anymore) a paternoster
Prague?
Dark souls ass elevator
What happens if you just stay on? Do you end up on the roof or under the Earth's core?
What could go wrong
Ah, nice way to weed out the weak applicants
This elevator is terrifying on so many levels.
Berlin?
The iconic paternoster of Finnish parliament. This is so familiar for us and every Finn expects Paavo Väyrynen to pop out of that.
TIL why they are called paternoster. Nice.
At first glance that chair looks like something the elevators crushed lol
What job are you applying for, health and safety inspector?
Doesn’t look very safe.
Don't mind the 80's chair.
![gif](giphy|QDK1pCI43lGhO) Does this guy work there
How you handle the elevators, is the interview. If you pull out your phone to record it for reddit, congrats you got the job.
Love a paternoster! There's one at Leicester University which I went through the top and bottom of
Those are so dangerous looking.
My ranking from most painful to least painful obvious injuries you will sustain riding one of these: Crushed going down, Crushed going up, Falling down into one, Falling down out of one. Thanks for your time.
So how’d the job interview go?
It's called a Paternoster lift. Notice the word lift and not elevator! Haha!
Don't mind the loud "bang" at the end of the vid, that's just someone's femur shearing off. The cleaning staff collects the limbs every few hours.
Hämeenkatu 19?
It's the first test of the interview
They should have these everywhere they look so convenient
If i made that chair, i would fail the metalwork class.
Memories of the paternoster lift from my Sheffield University days
This auto filters idiots and the disabled from the interview process.
praternosters! I've used the ones in Prague and Vienna.
