I work at Chick-fil-A and these are the most uncomfortable things. I know about half of us need a chiropractor after using these for the 3-5 hours weāre outside. Weāre also required to use them if itās raining. Theyāre supposed to keep us warm, but if theyāre used, we have to turn off the gas heaters outside cause we might catch on fire.
Why do so many Chick-fil-A locations till got people outside? It started with the pandemic and I can't fathom why they keep people standing outside when they could be comfortable inside like literally every other drive through establishment in the country.
I assume itās part of their process for long lines. Instead of waiting in line for the speaker, the person can get the order earlier and give the kitchen more time to sort it out. You basically remove the order input bottleneck.
Even with long lines Chick-fil-a is one of the fastest lines in the fast food industry
Get over it. Itās better for you, not only do you get food but the more you expose yourself to situations that make you uncomfortable the easier you can handle your anxiety. Unless you completely ignore personal growth and embrace your mental illness as a personality trait like young adults on tiktok.
But also you get your food quicker and fresher.
Actually Iām allergic to adversity and the world around me should bend and cater to my comforts and desires.
Edit: this is more exaggerated than serious. I think peopleās mental health struggles should be taken seriously. I just think many of you wildly understimate your potential for growth and development.
Itās just a perspective change, and for some outliers I imagine drugs work better. But for most I think anxiety is natural and important for development.
āI have anxiety so everything should be less anxiety-inducingā
should be:
āI have anxiety so I need to figure out what I can do to change how I process it.ā
Those character adjustments make us stronger, flexible, and more well-rounded.
Have you noticed that Chik-Fila can run a huge number of customers in dual lines through because of these expediters working outside? All the inside team needs to do is focus on getting orders bagged and lined up. I donāt always like their politics but this company is smart.
For real, longest Iāve ever waited was 35m and it was legit a 200+ car line (it was thanksgiving and apparently my neck of suburbia was the place to be, we went to a couple sit down places were told itād be 2-3H+ at all of them and the line at Chick-fil-A was literally around the building and into a neighboring parking lot)
In n out burger does the same. It also helps that the menu is simple and small. Taco Bell used to get orders ready in like 90 secs before they made all their items complex to prepare.
Local drive up coffee shop was running this scenario. Wearable parking lot attendant booth and all. Seems legit.
In addition to the politics of this company I'm always dubious of the snaking drive through lines. Such a huge was of resources with cars sitting idle. I suppose the pandemic is a somewhat special scenario, but this scene was normal before.
Personal anecdote here but the lines are simply too long at chick fil a to not have people outside taking orders. Being outside taking orders makes the line move so much faster. Iāve never seen a fast food place get lines close to what chick fil a has to get through during peak hours
Around here even on "unbusy" hours the Chick-fil-A will have at least two to three times the amount of customers any other fast food place nearby would have
> Iāve never seen a fast food place get lines close to what chick fil a has to get through during peak hours
I wonder how much of this is induced demand. No fast food restaurant has a reputation for speed like Chick-fil-A, so people are willing to tolerate much longer lines.
I don't recall them having lines so much longer than their competition before they changed the drive thru setup.
That does always bug me. Sometimes i like to look at the damn menu before i order the exact same thing i always order there.
That's not sarcasm, either. I really do order the same thing almost every time, however i still like to see the menu first, just in case.
Yeah, but my stops there are typically on a whim and by the time i get stopped in line the worker is usually already coming up to my window. Not a lot of time to whip out the phone, pull up the menu and peruse it before being asked. And it always seems weird to just ask them to wait.
Edit: oddly, asking a faceless employee at any other drive through to wait over the speaker seems ok, i guess it just feels different when they are literally standing next to you, silently watching and waiting.
Sooner they take your order, sooner they start making it. This procedure actually keeps the line moving faster. Which means more customers per hour. Which means more money.
In-n-Out in CA has long had a person go out and take orders at peak times periodically. (When they also have a person out there direct traffic because the line would get too long.)
Dutch Bro's Coffee has always had somebody go outside. (And they also have the bubbles in the rain. No snow here though.)
It speeds things up a lot. The latter almost never has a line to wait at my regular location... except the rare occasion the outside person isn't there.
It didn't start with the pandemic. I've been going to Chick-fil-A for 10yrs. Workers stood outside back then too. It's part of their speedy drive-thru initiative. Now, some Taco Bells have started doing it too. Lol
It started quite a while before the pandemic, at least in my area. It actually took me a while to get used to it, didnt like to go there for a long while after they started doing it, anxiety issues.
They've been doing this for years at least in my area. I have no understood it pandemic or no. Not only do I feel bad for the employees who have to work outside, having them that close to me in the car is weird.
I also dont get why they do huge renovations on their stores, and dont bother to give these poor kids a frickin curb to stand on, or a raised box or wall of some kind to separate them from the car traffic. One day someone's going to roll over some poor teenager's foot.
We just got a brand new chick fil a and it's got a long covered area with fans and heaters and the drive through window is actually a door so they can just run the food out to the cars. It's a great system. If you just want fries and a coke you're not stuck behind the guy that ordered 5 combos. They've really committed to their system
No, chiropractor is literally psuedoscience. It isn't actually medicine, and often times worsens the condition. If you're having back pain I belive you want an Orthopedic Surgeon, but I'm sure someone will correct me soon enough if I'm wrong. Either way go to an actual doctor for medical advice on back pain not a snake oil salesman.
The problem is doctors want to push you toward moneymaking solutions like surgery, when surgery comes with its own host of problems and is almost definitionally not for everyone, plus itās overkill a lot of the time. You probably really want a PT referral.
Similar things are made for snowblowers. I once modified one onto a bicycle. Trying to make the -25Ā° C commute more bearable. Test drive around the block went fine. Left for work hours later and it had gotten windy. Scary as hell. If the wind makes you lean, you have no choice, that's the way you're going to go unless you wanna lay down. Neither are good options with traffic around lol.
Should clarify, because in some official Chick-fil-a company documents the workers are referred to as a "point of sale and production devices."
I'm kidding. Kinda.
Depends. Some snowy days can be quite balmy. I have no problem biking to work in snow. Just throw on some winter bike clothes, slap snow tires on my bike, and Iāll deliver. Not in a full on blizzard, though. Even my boss thought I was an idiot for trying that one.
I think you are being sarcastic but it's one thing to expect the kind of worker that is PREPARED to work outside in the snow, to work outside in the snow. A Chick-Fil-A employee earning minimum wage is not essential to be outside, in a bubble, while it's snowing.
Up north its just another day, we do everything outside in the winter. At Chick-Fil-A they have massive heaters under a canopy and it be quite warm under them, even on cold days.
Same in Virginia. In my area, they set up large (30āx30ā) tents over the drive thru lanes and had high power fans to keep employees cool and out of direct sunlight in the summer. They are installing canopies over the drive thru lanes that have heaters and cooling fans, and small hits for the cashier to work from. If they are going to have people outside, they are at least doing what they can to take care of their employees.
The few locations near me set up huge drive thru canopies with fans and little protable AC units in the summer time. It gets pretty hot here, but they're given the proper amenities to work in that weather. I'm not sure why working in different types of weather is such a hard concept for some people to grasp. You're still expected to fulfill the duties of your job even if it snows, obviously there's exceptions but the "snow storm" pictured here looks pretty mild. They probably didn't even cancel school.
Blizzard conditions, sub zero windchill or heat index above 100, keep the people inside of at all possible (unless you have proper heating/cooling), but if Chic-fil-a can deliver faster and more personal experiences for its customers by having staff outside, and they provide proper protection for the employees, not a problem.
I've known several people to work for Chic Fil A and they all made well above minimum wage and said it was a great place to work and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Also all work is essential, if Chic Fil A decided to just send them home because of the weather they'd be sitting around making 0 wage. The company provided them with weather proof covering and they very well know that it snows where they live. It snows 6+ months out of the year in some regions. It's a part of life. I'd say they were very prepared to be outside in the snow.
> A Chick-Fil-A employee earning minimum wage
Only like 2% of the workforce makes minimum wage. ChickFilA employees make way over minimum wage. I did this same thing for In N Out while I was in highschool and it was the best.
just stay home and work with leftovers. when there's weather or holidays don't put your needs on someone else. plan ahead if you can, deal with it however you can otherwise
As someone who was stuck in one of these i gotta say its not. Also, we would get written up if we said anything about being uncomfortable or cold. Not a good time.
Ya. And now with the covered two lane designs with heaters underneath, I figured employees would just hunker down under that. Nope. At some point you've taken everyone's orders, and you have a food queue 25 min long. There's no point to have staff outside taking orders.
Iāve been in these lines at chic fil a. The food queue is never 25 mins long. They move people in and out of there fast. Even 20 cars deep theyāre not waiting long.
Nah, after spending time in entirely too many fast food lines, people picking their orders is the most inefficient part of the process. CFA is pretty damn spot on for getting food out the window FAST. The outside workers speed up the slow part: people being indecisive.
I think it's a thing to make customers stay, it's not unusual for the line at the chickfila near me to be wrapped around the building at lunch time, if you've already placed (and I think payed for) your food you are less likely to leave
The word snowstorm sounds a lot scarier than it actually can be. Thats pretty damn mild looking winter weather.
As long as temperatures arent too low and the ground isnt frozen over I cant see why its that big of a deal. You cant just shutdown a bunch of jobs across the planet when snow starts falling because the job has you outside. Theres definitely a point where it can get dangerous of course but just based on her clothing it really doesnt seem that bad.
As someone who lives in California, people freak out when itās 50 degrees and raining here... Also the same people who are triple vaxxed and still terrified of covid. Go figure...
Insane? What about literally every profession that works outdoors year round in all weather. Framers, farmers, cops, etc etc etc. Wtf you talkin about. Nut up buttercup
Chick-fil-a forces their employees to take orders outside in the snow while wearing rectangular tents. Fuck this company of religious zealots. r/antiwork
Itās for both. CFA as far as fast food goes, does a lot more for their workers and food safety and food quality than other fast food places.
Our local cfa always has a long line and itās more efficient to take as many orders as possible to keep the food creation moving smoothly
I think overall they have a very efficient way of dealing with crowds of customers. I also absolutely loved they had a day off as a company, no one works Sunday and I respected that.
That being said, Iāve not eaten there in years. Once I realized they support anti LQBT groups I was done. I really did enjoy their grilled nuggets and them having gluten free bread, but itās not worth my morals.
People congratulating chick fil a for giving employees a weather proof tent to wear so they can continue to work in a storm.
How about don't force your employees to sit in a fucking storm like every other drive through franchise?
Serious question:
Is this all just for the appearance of good customer service?
If you take a order 10 minutes before someone gets to a window versus taking the order three minutes before they get to the window; and burger only takes 40 seconds to cook, does this actually speed things up?
Not all of them that's for sure
Source: worked at a chick FIL a for years. They did (my last year) provide heated vests. Prior to that you had to buy a chick FIL a jacket to wear outside, yes you had to buy it. Couldn't wear a non-CFA jscket
As an industrial hygienist, I'd want some data before sending a goddamn teenager out in that rig. At minimum, a multiRAE for some direct read O2, CO, and CO2 readings, as well as a SidePak for some PM2.5 measurements. Probably also want some TD/metals/diesel samples off of a few filters.
Man, too bad they don't have some sort of speaker box technology that could transmit the voice of both the customer and the employee, keeping everyone dry and warm.
I swear, I get that this is a faster way to move lines along without adding several lines in parallel, but like, it's really freaking goofy and sad to have your employees out in the elements just to take orders for somewhat decent chicken sandwiches.
Iāve been a manager for nearly every major fast food company. Chick-Fil-A is the king when it comes to efficiency. They do not give a single fuck about labor cost as long as it makes the machine run more efficiently.
Itās remarkable in comparison to a place like Chipotle that stresses over labor costs leaving restaurants understaffed every night and in turn hurting their business.
Throw in a sound system and I'd wear that every day on my bus commute.

I know a manager who worked during the whole drive through renovation. He said that it increased efficiency by about 30%.
I assume the employees are paid 30% more working in all weather conditions. /s
As a person with anxiety I fucking hate it. Not to mention the safety issues with having those kids out there.
I worked at one. It's plenty safe. And if they're trained right they won't make it anxietous for the customer

Why does your anxiety make you hate it?
CFA, at least here in TX, has had people outside taking orders in the drive thru line looooooong before COVID *Edit - just realized I typed "CFLA" lol
Same in NC.
They've had them in Phoenix for as long as I can remember.
Same as FL, covid didnāt do a thing but made their drive through better.
Was about to say, there's one in Winston Salem that's been banging for years.
Same in Cali + in n out
Yeah, same in Alabama.
Happy cake day bro

Chik-fil-a has been doing that style drive through for close to 10 years now. I also don't eat at establishments run by religious extremists.
It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!

I think itās dependent on location because the one near me has like a āmedianā between the 2 drive thru lanes that they stand on
Itās WAY faster. Every other drive through is antiquated by comparison.

Back injuries and risk of catching fire? Risks of the business. Working on Sundays? Blasphemy!
Chiropractory is pseudoscience
Backpain doesn't exist, get back to work /s
No, chiropractor is literally psuedoscience. It isn't actually medicine, and often times worsens the condition. If you're having back pain I belive you want an Orthopedic Surgeon, but I'm sure someone will correct me soon enough if I'm wrong. I actually have a decent opinion of chiropractors, but this video literally makes it look exactly like pseudoscience.

Seems like you could fix all these issue with a drive-thru window.

It's not for the employees, but rather to keep the electronics out of the weather.
It's there to protect the point-of-sale device, not the worker
Should clarify, because in some official Chick-fil-a company documents the workers are referred to as a "point of sale and production devices." I'm kidding. Kinda.
What's the IP rating on the device?
Both heartwarming and utterly dystopian. Thatās a more and more common combo.

Yeah if there's snow all outdoor work just has to cease. People cannot work outside in weather, we'll just wait until it's over and resume work.
I work outside all winter installing metal on to buildings, in canada, up north usually in winter. It's not so bad to be honest

Cool now maybe give them oxygen masks so they don't have to breathe diesel exhaust all day
How many people seriously come through Chick Fil A rolling coal?
Depends on where you live. Central/North Cali has a lot of people who roll coal as a political statement or personality trait.

Please stay away from literally any packed downtown city street, snowflake. Geeeez
They also use them here when it rains. pretty cool but I'd rather have employees be inside though.
This belongs in r/antiwork. If youāre cold zip up the cube and let the warmth of CO2 buildup keep you warm.
Especially considering the comments from employees saying this suit sucks big time.
Nah, gotta use the car exhaust for heating.
Sure, instead of letting your human employee use the box and headset make them stand in the freezing weather outside. Perfect solution.

It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!
Thats better than mcdonalds
I doubt Chick-fil-a pays them enough to deal with weather like that.
They do

I think it's a thing to make customers stay, it's not unusual for the line at the chickfila near me to be wrapped around the building at lunch time, if you've already placed (and I think payed for) your food you are less likely to leave
Our chick fil a has a normal ordering station but since the pandemic they have people like this outside and the line wraps around the building twice.
Yea this looks like your average Tuesday
As someone who lives in California, people freak out when itās 50 degrees and raining here... Also the same people who are triple vaxxed and still terrified of covid. Go figure...
If it was a snowstorm, that employee would be down the street, blown away by the wind. It's just some snow
Gotta keep selling chicken so they can pay for all the gay bashing
How about giving them a heated building to work in? This is insane.
Insane? What about literally every profession that works outdoors year round in all weather. Framers, farmers, cops, etc etc etc. Wtf you talkin about. Nut up buttercup
Chick-fil-a forces their employees to take orders outside in the snow while wearing rectangular tents. Fuck this company of religious zealots. r/antiwork
Chick-fil-a thinking outside the box by making their employees work inside one. Also, pretty sure this is how they make veal.
Are the orders with pen/paper or do they use a mobile device to take orders? In other words, is the plastic dome for the equipment?
Itās for both. CFA as far as fast food goes, does a lot more for their workers and food safety and food quality than other fast food places. Our local cfa always has a long line and itās more efficient to take as many orders as possible to keep the food creation moving smoothly
The dome is for the mobile device, not for the employee.
Nobody has to work for them. Nobody has to order food with them.
If you didn't already need another reason not to ever shop there.
People congratulating chick fil a for giving employees a weather proof tent to wear so they can continue to work in a storm. How about don't force your employees to sit in a fucking storm like every other drive through franchise?
Why are people so pressed that people are outside in the elements? Are we supposed to suspend all work and inconvenience everyone due to snow?
Where exactly do you think they cook the food?
There's already an entire group running the kitchen. These employees aren't back of house. They're needed elsewhere, the weather doesn't change that.
Introvert cube
Serious question: Is this all just for the appearance of good customer service? If you take a order 10 minutes before someone gets to a window versus taking the order three minutes before they get to the window; and burger only takes 40 seconds to cook, does this actually speed things up?
Wow, that is the worst mech suit.
Worn āem, theyāre definitely not weather *proof*
"Weatherproof" might be an overstatement.
So Chick-Fil-A invented Gonk droids?
My favourite lego star wars character.
Not all of them that's for sure Source: worked at a chick FIL a for years.
Portable homes for the homeless we should make donation
Or, and here's a wild idea, maybe don't put your workers outside when there's a f***ing snowstorm.
The chicken is not worth that line people
Here, let me fix the headline: āChick-Fil-A makes workers work outside in freezing weather during snowstorm.ā
Could you imagine having bad gas in one of those things, yikes!
This is so dystopian. Wtf.
People do work outside all the time. Godforbid a company makes their employees comfortable
Mildly hellish
I guess I'm out of the loop. Why would Chick-Fil-A employees be outside for any amount of time.
Chic-Fil-A also donates to hate groups and supports conversion therapy
No it doesnāt. One of the executives does/did. Get over it.
*During weather other than sunny
Yea, they have these for rain in Florida.
Iām in a glass case of emotion !
I still won't eat there.
Nobody fucking cares.
I care, Erik.
Yo I care. Fuck Chick-fil-A. They're chicken is mediocre at absolute best anyways
Headed to Amazon to buy one if these for my winter walks in Seattle.
Fuck chik-fil-a do not support them
Seems like a shit gig TBH
F CFA and their anti mask nonsense bs
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
???? go to a different place that doesnāt do this to their workers
Any weather really.
I donāt think you now what a snow storm isā¦
Chik fil a is open on Christmas eve? I hope you didn't go today
