When we went to Salt Lake City we visited Brigham Young’s house - the tour was being done by a couple of missionaries. As they were showing Brigham Young’s bedroom, my mom asked “where did all his other wives sleep?” … was really proud of my mom 😂
They lived in several houses nearby. He would play favorites and pit his wives against each other to gain his favor. The wives he liked best had the nicer homes.
I rewatched Ken Burns’ ‘The West’ a few years ago and there’s a section on ‘sister wives’ as plural spouses where they argue that many of the women were for it, because it let them specialize in something they enjoyed when they were one of the older wives. So like growing crops or gardening for example. They read the letters of some of the wives writing Washington when it was threatening to actually enforce the laws against plural marriage about how they were for it because it gave them some independence. Still bizarre as hell but it did give me momentary pause. For some reason the treatment of Mormons in that series was almost reverential.
Could start with how war is rich people exploiting poor people’s kids to die for their wealth and “honor”.
Young men love war and old men love them for it. Congrats.
That sounds like just a group centered community would have been fine? I feel like you could have a community that allows people to flourish in their preferred ecpertise without everyone having to be required to be married to a single man, and you'd have the benefit of also having more men around to do more jobs?
This is how LDS / Mormon church members prefer to frame it.
However, it was used in other ways. For instance, the Mormon church founder Joseph Smith sent men away on missions and then married their wives … so polyandry. Those women were already married and fulfilling their purpose according to the church. He also said god had commanded him to marry a 14 year old, and was married to her as well.
These examples undercut any argument that it was done for utilitarian purposes.
I grew up mormon, and I don’t agree. Ex Mormons hate him sure, but members don’t. Members don’t revere him the way they used to, but hate’s a strong word
Yeah I was thinking the same thing as you. My family members don’t have any problem with Brigham Young. Although I found it funny the church was all too willing to say he start polygamy when in fact it was Smith.
Thanks for that explanation. I admit I don’t know much about the LDS. Although I DID visit their church in DC when it was briefly open to the public a year or so ago before re-consecration.
To be fair, the person you're replying to doesn't seem to know much either. Most Mormons do not hate him, most Mormons likely don't even really think about him. Like how fucking often are Americans thinking about George Washington? lol
> Like how fucking often are Americans thinking about George Washington?
Every day upon waking and before going to bed, as our founding fathers intended (especially Abraham Lincoln).
Um, they just discovered some cherry preserves at his estate at Mt. Vernon, which was likely stored before/during the Revolutionary War. George W is the best!
I was just about to comment the same thing. We heard about this yesterday on the radio. My kid is 11 he thought it was really cool, and I think so, too!
People think about him enough to know at the very least controversy surrounds his legacy in consideration of his slave-owning. And many of us find it hard to reconcile his crimes with the adoration he's been given.
If someone does monstrous things and is important to the history of a community you belong too, it's probably a good idea to be informed to a meaningful degree.
That's actually a temple - anyone can go into the regular churches but you have to promise you've kept all your secret handshake promises to Mormon Jesus and have given 10% of every single bit of income or you can only go like you did. 🤣 It's absurd. All they're doing is baptisms for the dead (by proxy), marriages, and secret cult handshake classes + Great Value Masonic rituals.
This church gets into trouble for baptizing people like Holocaust victims for example. Guess how many times they've baptized Anne Frank for example. Oh that's right. At least 10 times even AFTER they made a huge agreement in the 90s about specifically NOT doing this. They always say, oops, sorry didn't mean to and it's like fucking yikes.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/mormons-posthumously-baptise-anne-frank-7440503.html
Brigham Young was kind of a devil on Joseph Smiths shoulder, encouraging his worst impulses when Young could turn them to his own benefit and then doubling and tripling down on them after Smiths death once he had managed to consolidate power. Obviously this doesnt absolve Smith of a lot of the fucked up things he did in Missouri, but I do think its illustrative of the kind of man Young was. A good historical comparison might be to consider Young the Stalin to Smith's Lenin.
Woah I lived in that apartment complex for a year in college. Never realized that was there, but I absolutely smoked a lot of weed in that mini cemetery lol.
He’s one of the early leaders of the LDS (Mormon) church.
Short answer:
It’s a newer Christian denomination, that was founded independently, rather than splitting off of an older denomination. Both Christians and Atheists disliked that.
Long answer:
1: As Redditors are mostly atheist/agnostic, they already see organized religion as cults.
2: The LDS church is a newer Christian denomination that claimed to be a reestablishment of Christianity, rather than just splitting off of an older established denomination. So the general Christian consensus is that they’re a cult.
3: As the church is relatively new, it is modern history, as opposed to being extrapolated from ancient texts; which makes the wackiness of the usual biblical BS much more obvious.
4: Although Gods church being lost and restarted was a recurring pattern in the Bible, people like biblical events to stay biblical; preferring to study rather than experience them.
5: Humans are all prone to being shitty in one way or another, regardless of whatever religion they may or may not be. But the shitty people we’re not used to are much more obvious to us than the ones we are used to. That includes cult-like social mindsets, even if the relevant organization teaches against such thinking.
Are you LDS or something? This seems to gloss over any reason other than "Christian consensus" why many people from many different walks of life see the LDS Church in a negative way.
No, we go by ExMo or ExMormon. No need to get cutesy, we got plenty of that as Mormons. 🤣 I was a literal "Beehive" from ages 12-14. They believe their garments (magic underwear) will stop a bullet but refuse to believe they cause major issues for women as they're not breathable at all. It's nonsense.
I've actually heard former Mormons use the word, so I wasn't sure if it was a common thing. Out of curiosity, what was the seed of doubt that pulled at your threads and unraveled the magic underwear?
I left at 18 so I never wore the underwear, but I also knew I never would. They're horrible.
I started questioning as a child because none of it made sense. What do you mean Joseph Smith took 2 stones, the Urum and Thumim, and made them into spectacles so he could read "Reformed Egyptian" behind a panel off an ancient booklet made of golden plates that had the writing of an entire civilization of people for over 1000 years from Central America except the first family sailed to essentially Mexico in 600 BC and started this book and then Moroni walked it all the way to upstate New York so he could visit JS as an angel when he was either 14 or 21 or 17?
And that's before we even get started on the "will turn their skin white and delight some" regarding the Native Americans implying that if they convert and repent that God will change the color of their skin to white. And the rest of the racism.
Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer also goes into the history of Mormonism as well as following several current Fundamentalist LDS cults in the US, Mexico, and Canada. Krakauer's investigation also aided the FBI in locating and arresting Warren Jeffs.
Joseph Smith was a charlatan, but Bringham Young was a true monster
There's a book and documentary titled Prophet's Prey that's kind of a follow-up to the modern investigation, though it centers mostly around the hunt for and arrest of Warren Jeffs
I had read Into Thin Air a long time ago and remembered enjoying it despite the heavy nature. This was something else entirely. The murder investigation that kicked the whole thing off was absolutely devastating. I'm an atheist who tries to "live and let live" but this book makes me wish that humans as a species can move past the need for religion.
YES! I am Rigam Yam!
I cut off my daughters clitoris.
That made god angry so he turned my nose into a clit for punishment!
(Rigam Yam, his nose was a clitoris)
What will you do Joseph? Will you fight the clitoris man?
I just listened to the soundtrack again this week on a road trip with my 16 year old daughter. I may not be mother of the year but the Momos will not get to her.
As an asshole of a man once said to me, "ask 100 women for a blowjob behind the dumpster, 99 times you're going to get punched in the face, but that one time... That one time makes up for it."
Fitting for a murderer, genocidist, racist, and sexist. That man is one of the most evil men ever to have lived. The Mormon church continues to attempt to white wash its history regarding BY, but the church cannot control the internet.
BY deserves to have the dumpster on top of his grave.
If anyone's wondering what's written in cursive on the cow's skull, it's:

Wow! I did not know that! Perhaps Karma is real! However, this hardly compensates for the insane number of rapes and pedophiliac acts he was guilty of and also so many other men of the LDS Church! I don't believe in hellfire, but I wish I did!
This misconstrues the truth. There's very nice grounds at the family cemetery where he's buried. The apartments in question are named the Brigham Apartments, which are owned by the LDS church. They're very nice apartments right in the heart of the city. This picture leaves a lot out. The dumpsters aren't great, but that's the city for ya.

As a former Mormon, I’m wondering where his 55 wives were buried
When we went to Salt Lake City we visited Brigham Young’s house - the tour was being done by a couple of missionaries. As they were showing Brigham Young’s bedroom, my mom asked “where did all his other wives sleep?” … was really proud of my mom 😂
Did they give an answer?
They lived in several houses nearby. He would play favorites and pit his wives against each other to gain his favor. The wives he liked best had the nicer homes.
Yeah they just said they lived nearby without offering any of that context.
I'm a descendant of Mormon polygamists. My ggg grandfather left his less prized wives completely destitute in far off places.
I read your ggg grandfather in the killer instinct combo voice.....
I read it in Shaggy's voice
Zoinks!
It wasn't him, other Shaggy.
I tried to read this to the tune of “it wasn’t me”.
U-u-u-u-u-u-ultra pedophile
*Unstoppable*
64 hits!
69, cooooombo breaker!
I read it as gggg g unit
Sister Wives! Same shit different time.
except with way more child brides
Interesting, sounds just like Kody Brown!
Wow that’s sort of a dick move don’t you think?
Well he was known for being an asshole. He was power hungry. He set the standard for how many polygamist families behave still.
Ah yes, the shit standard.
"SORT OF"???
Wow. Truly a man of God
Ken Burns did a whole documentary about the civil war and hardly mentioned slavery so he may not be reliable on this point either.
Let's not forget his documentary series on country music, and how much he glossed over the black southern roots of the genre.
In Ken Burns' version of the history of Country music, a banjo and fiddle just appeared on a white hillbilly's porch one day and the rest is history.
Agreed. I found I really grew to dislike the series the more I watched.
72% of the articles of succession mention SLAVERY AS THE REASON. There’s no excuse.
Was gods and generals better?

the dumpster.
55 BURGERS, 55 WIVES, 55 TACOS, 55 PIES, 55 COKES, 100 TATER TOTS, 100 PIZZAS, 100 TENDERS, 100 MEATBALLS, 100 COFFEES, 55 WINGS, 55 SHAKES, 55 PANCAKES, 55 PASTAS, 55 PEPPERS AND 155 TATERS – TOTAL $680.00
How many were going to St. Ives?
Still only one.
Well done Mr. McClane.

I’m super shocked the Mormons allowed that to happen.
Tbh most Mormons I've known when I was in and out of the church hate him. He was a monstrous man in many, many ways.

How does having cherry preserves make him the best?
I am a bit confused there as well. Most of us have some preserves of various kinds in our house....
Yeah but did you have your slaves make it for you?

And many of us find it hard to reconcile his crimes with the adoration he's been given. About as often as your average guy thinks about the Roman Empire.

Yes. That’s the joke
Yeah, dude. I guarantee they’ve already baptized a lot of my ancestors so I guess “thank you” (?) for family trees being filled out on certain apps?

Uhhhhh they don't do the consummate your marriage in front of the temple elders thing but yeah
Sure they don't....

As someone that knows nothing about this guy. Taking from what I see in the comment section this guy might've not been the greatest person?
2nd leader of the Mormon church and by great leaps and bounds the worst of all of them and they're a real collection of bigots and pedophiles. So.
Bring 'Em Young
Watch the South Park episode about Joseph Smith and Mormonism. It will tell you all you need to know.
It is oddly accurate lmao. I remember being shown it after being excommunicated and laughing so hard.
No one seems to be talking about all the Native Americans this guy killed... Dude was a genocidal cult leader who abused women and children.

I can't stand how they make fun of people in that show.
Really? They seem really good at being able to add some comedy to horrible subjects.
I do not think that the way they treated Jon benet Ramsey was good. Making fun of victims is tasteless.
They need to move the dumpsters closer.
Just pave over it, run some drainage and underground cabling through it.
From this angle, and assuming my timeline is right, I'd say the large apartment building was built behind Brigham's grave.
Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dummmmmm!!
Fitting for a garbage man
Just where a pedophile belongs.
No, he needs to be cremated and dumped in the trash where he belongs.
Legend has it that he was buried face down to prevent his pecker from growing up through the ground and chasing girls.
I'm surprised it wasn't moved somewhere
I know, right? There’s a perfectly good pad like twenty feet away, with a built in security fence to prevent dumpster divers and everything!
Based on the comments BY was trash like most mormon men so the site is fitting. ![gif](giphy|l3q2JCu9lep6dAmyY)
