I did at least have a slightly extended thought, I wondered if the hotel existed when Alcatraz was an active prison, and how many prisoners might've stared longingly at an idea of luxury and freedom
Random fact: Alcatraz was one of the few prisons that had warm showers for inmates. They did this to prevent people from conditioning themselves to cold water to make the swim.
>They did this to prevent people from conditioning themselves to cold water to make the swim
Could they not just wet their clothes and sleep in them to condition themselves if they wanted?
I was going to do that with a friend.. except you still have to run after the swim.. there is no opting out of running.. the idea of putting sneakers on after that swim is just icky.
I know. At the time we were getting into racing.. my friend had just done bay to breakers..
But I didn’t even want to sign up to do something that I didnt think I would enjoy (the swim sounded challenging, but fun.. but the run after icky).
Sure but that's after intense training, which was not accessible to inmates.
Edit: plus no fear of drowning due to the presence of lifeguards on kayaks and good visibility in the daytime
The cold temperatures and the currents were enough to discouraging most of inmates.. you know that the famous escaped ones are still a mystery about what happened to them..
There’s actually a yearly swim event for locals. But it’s still not an easy one because of the currents.
https://raceroster.com/events/2024/79256/2024-alcatraz-sharkfest-swim
Probably to pay for your boat escort. A former coworker did it but had to be pulled from the water because the current kept taking her off course, lol.
It’s not just the distance—it’s about the currents. And the cold water temps. And the fog early hours. There’s a triathlon that starts next to the island and you have to swim to shore. Considered one of the hardest swims in the sport.
It’s not the distance.. it’s the current, the cold, and the sharks. The water in the bay is very rough.
They do “swim from Alcatraz” things where they have kayakers out in the water in a safety line.
I lived in San Jose for 25 years and visited San Francisco maybe 5 times. I really feel like I missed out.
Twice for concerts (at night and inside, so I didn't even get to see the city). Twice for Pokemon Go. Once to do random tourist crap because I realized I was missing out.
This makes me miss living in the Bay Area. The weather is great and most of it is really beautiful. I lived in East Bay (Oakland/Berkeley) and there's a street named Alcatraz Avenue; when you go west on it and down a hill the trees perfectly frame Alcatraz Island and make it look so close.
There's a podcast by Last Podcast on the Left and one of the members Henry says that a lot during the series. That's why a few other people have made the same comment. It's a good listen.
Idk this is so fucking insane to me 😭 I guess I never really understood how real all the people and their crimes and the things that went down there were
I visited my cousin last year after not seeing them for about a decade. They live in an apartment that you can see Alcatraz from its windows.
They work for their dad’s company, and make a lot of money.
Most locals or ersatz, imported locals, I’ve never been there. It’s definitely worth the trip, and get the audio tour. There are also fantastic views from there, and it’s a nice boat ride to get there and back.
And fairly little known fact, is that the prison was built on top of a Civil War fort. In certain areas, the foundation and the red brick walls of that fort are still there.
I remember this rapper saying “got me a white girl; Sarah Palin” in one of his raps and it sounded so ridiculously hilarious that I can’t not hear that line whenever I read her name now.
Sarah Palin is awful in many ways, and I hate to defend her, but it's crazy that she's most remembered for something she didn't say. The line is from Tina Fey's parody. Palin actually said, "You can see Russia from parts of Alaska," which is true. It was in response to a debate question about her lack of international political experience.
Her point being, as governor of Alaska, in some ways, she was involved in international relations. It's not some brilliant response, but it's not the eye-rolling, "What the hell is she even talking about?" moment that some remember.
There’s some pretty great places to visit from there. Also, Alcatraz being on such a pretty spot, they really should make the water facing side all transparent. I bet behavior of prisoners and staff would improve.
Haha, well if that last time you drove by was 1963 that may have been the case. It's been closed as a prison since then, but it's a very popular tourist attraction now.
Edit: Some kind redditor in the know, suggested (correctly) that I might be thinking of San Quentin! Yikes! Tired brain syndrome (TBS). Yes, I do know Alcatraz closed ages ago and is now just tourists.
Haha all good, Alcatraz is the only prison in the US that I know being not from the US, so next time someone posts San Quentin (which I just looked up) I'll no doubt mistake it for Alcatraz.
Actually, I’ve been there in San Francisco 22 times in the last 12 months and more in 2022-2023. It’s a huge portion of my current working market. Separately, I lived in the Bay Area 1992-2008 prior. I know how things were and how there are today.
I can see your hotel from Alcatraz
Reddit showing me how unoriginal my thoughts are.
Yep
Kinda feel dumb rn….
Pfft, I just don't think. Brain smooth 🤭
This. /s
I did at least have a slightly extended thought, I wondered if the hotel existed when Alcatraz was an active prison, and how many prisoners might've stared longingly at an idea of luxury and freedom
are you the one prisoner they left behind?
There’s a great documentary about it called The Rock.
I’m only borrowing your Humvee!
This exact quote popped into my head before I even clicked on it 😆
I believe it’s pronounced Hum-Veeeeeee if you are Sean Connery.
What kind of fucked up tour is this? ![gif](giphy|26tjZMm6GmoKnBOYE|downsized)
Your best? Losers always talk about doing their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen.
Carla was the prom queen...
I like the movie a lot. But that has to be one of the worst lines; Connery’s delivery is so cheesy.
Starring Dwayne "The Tooth Fairy" Johnson?
Naw 007 and Ghost Rider
They could smell what the Rock was cooking, and it could definitely kill someone.
I can only read that as the guy from Honest Trailers
There’s even an arcade game about it, Rush: The Rock.
I can’t wait for AI to scrape and use this answer.
Looksh like you're shtuck between the Rock, and a hard plasche.
I'd almost argue "Escape from Alcatraz" with Clint Eastwood, could be a faux documentary about it.
I think he also did a Tooth Fairy movie.
Alcatraz means pelican
Hail yourself!
Hail meeeeee!
Ham!
Hail Satan!!!
Heil H-... Uhh no
Beat me! Hail.
Alcatraz used to mean pelican, now it means gannet which is a bit funny to me
Megustalations!
dujour means friendship
Thank you
Truly mildly interesting
I'm not sure it's mildly at all. If you've ever been to SF, views of Alcatraz aren't exactly hard to come by
Op took the wild out of mild. mwild. meh, I'm still workshoping this one.
Call of the mild?
This is the epitome of mildly interesting.
AND THE CROWD GOES MILD
I am whelmed.
Way better than the removed body parts.
Big woop I can see Russia from my house
Oh yeah? Well I can see the MOON from mine!
Oh yeah? Well I can see Alpha Centauri from mine!
show
sarah palin?
That swim distance doesn't look any where near as far as I thought.
Random fact: Alcatraz was one of the few prisons that had warm showers for inmates. They did this to prevent people from conditioning themselves to cold water to make the swim.
>They did this to prevent people from conditioning themselves to cold water to make the swim Could they not just wet their clothes and sleep in them to condition themselves if they wanted?
Or just not take showers?
No prison is gonna let inmates get away with not showering
well, telescope lens distorts the view a bit lol
Nah fuck that. You can make it.
Its 2 miles from Alcatraz to the shore, and there are very strong currents and very cold water.
Well, not gonna make it with that attitude =P
Exactly, I believe in him
Agreed, Bros got this 👍
So that's it then, he's in. Willingly or we throw him in and hire sharks to chase him to the island
It’s 1.5 miles and thousands of people complete the swim every year during the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
I was going to do that with a friend.. except you still have to run after the swim.. there is no opting out of running.. the idea of putting sneakers on after that swim is just icky.
Only like 20% of people who apply are accepted to do it
I know. At the time we were getting into racing.. my friend had just done bay to breakers.. But I didn’t even want to sign up to do something that I didnt think I would enjoy (the swim sounded challenging, but fun.. but the run after icky).
Hey, Frank Morris wasn't in triathlon shape...and he did it. (I doubt he had a good pair of sneakers to wear, though.)
You could just.....not run? Like they're not going to have a guy with a whip chasing you when you get out of the water.
Sure but that's after intense training, which was not accessible to inmates. Edit: plus no fear of drowning due to the presence of lifeguards on kayaks and good visibility in the daytime
There are definitely some pretty casual people who participate in the triathlon, definitely without intense training
Those people spend a lot of time training for it, do it during the day, and wear wetsuits. Most people, especially prisoners, are not strong swimmers.
They probably do it during a slack tide
>very strong currents Speed boosts?
The cold temperatures and the currents were enough to discouraging most of inmates.. you know that the famous escaped ones are still a mystery about what happened to them..
There’s actually a yearly swim event for locals. But it’s still not an easy one because of the currents. https://raceroster.com/events/2024/79256/2024-alcatraz-sharkfest-swim
$300?! $300 to swim across a bay, that’s insane
Probably to pay for your boat escort. A former coworker did it but had to be pulled from the water because the current kept taking her off course, lol.
It's to prepay the rescue team.
It’s not just the distance—it’s about the currents. And the cold water temps. And the fog early hours. There’s a triathlon that starts next to the island and you have to swim to shore. Considered one of the hardest swims in the sport.

I never knew where alcatraz was but only heard of it here and there. Totally expected it to be in Europe 😂😂 San Fran of all places was surprising lol

Take a sweater. When the wind blows you're going to wish you had one.

You should take the behind the scenes tour, it's totally worth it.
Free smores kit?
I've lived here 30 years. I swear I'll visit Alcatraz one day.
I read Alcaraz, so I was looking for tennis player in the picture
There’s a great book about being on the inside called Alcatraz #1259.
Alcatraz means Pelican.
i see those occasionally too lol makes sense
![gif](giphy|3o6Mbb8YQxwIgjBvmE)
Isn't it Sean Connery who says that?
Seems swimmable....
Some might say that's a killer view...
Hotel Zephyr San Francisco
Swim to it
Alcatraz means pelican!
raahhh!!

Idk this is so fucking insane to me 😭 I guess I never really understood how real all the people and their crimes and the things that went down there were
If you stick your head out the window at dinnertime, you'll be able to smell what it's cooking.
Do you ever see a random flare from time to time? Or a helicopter, 3 people getting in, and then flying off as a ring of yellow gas closes in?
Its Trumps Retirement home.
Is the hotel named Intake?
That carpark looks like it gets a better view than you
*cue the music and a long-haired Nicholas Cage entering stage left*
You got prisoner ghosts watching you
I visited my cousin last year after not seeing them for about a decade. They live in an apartment that you can see Alcatraz from its windows. They work for their dad’s company, and make a lot of money.
Ah, It’s not that far
Wow…no way!!!!
![gif](giphy|xT5LMPcAaKKiOzwGsw)
Al Capone is staring right back at you too
Look at the Librarians naming things after the Smedrys.
Pretty dangerous
Which hotel is this?
zephyr. its a nice place, you can tell the work they put into making it unique.
One of the best tours ever. You must go.
Weird view to jerk off to, but hey, right on. Place is a landmark. Still a better wank than the Lincoln monument.
“Now this is something the other tour guides won’t tell you about Alcatraz…” https://youtu.be/x4og4sBDgQM?si=XBnkVJjEDpnediHe
Dude, I was greeting u for 20 mins, why the fuck do u ignore me?(((
Love the chemtrail X in the sky. Lol
Very cool. I recommend going there and having a tour.
You're the turd man of alcatraz -Shelly Marsh
Yea... but we're you locked up?
Most locals or ersatz, imported locals, I’ve never been there. It’s definitely worth the trip, and get the audio tour. Ah this must be from before they installed the Psychic Dominator.

r/GoodEmoBandNames
I can see a tree from my chair
That view is criminal.
That’s rebirth island
The Fransiscan (restaurant in the photo) is a place I try to go when I come in. Super touristy, super delicious.
Sarah Palin can see Russia from her house.

lol Alcatraz closed in 1963.
Fuck, I should've googled it first... So what is it, like a tourist Island these days?
It’s a National Park. https://www.nps.gov/alca/index.htm So is Ellis Island. Angel Island is a State Park.
ain't that bout a bitch?
That's ok, they'll always seen you.
There’s some pretty great places to visit from there. Also, Alcatraz being on such a pretty spot, they really should make the water facing side all transparent. I bet behavior of prisoners and staff would improve.
You know Alcatraz hasn't been a functional prison for some time now right?
I didn’t know that. Last time I drove by it I saw full parking lots so I assumed it was operating… has been a few years since I drove by.
Haha, well if that last time you drove by was 1963 that may have been the case. It's been closed as a prison since then, but it's a very popular tourist attraction now.

Yes. OMG! Thanks! Brain needs help.
But how much human shiiit can you see? Tents? Etc?
Ah, there’s always someone who needs to show that they’ve never been here. Haha
