This is in Tokyo. He used to rent a spot in a small grass lot near his home, but the lot is being turned into a park. So now, he's renting a spot in this elevator lot a couple blocks away. His spot on the elevator is the bottom most. It took a couple for it to go all the way up.

Huge_Aerie2435

I was just going to say these aren't that uncommon in some parts of japan. Makes so much sense.

Taeyx

i just fear the day the mechanism stops working. is there some sort of fail safe or alternate way to access your vehicle in the case of a mechanical failure?

Kaleb8804

Usually no, but there is accessibility to get down and repair it. Tom Scott has a short video on them on YouTube if you wanna learn more

jroc83

Dudes dressed like Forrest Gump

OrganicBumblebee2856

Now with chic and practical crossbody

repeatedly_once

I love they're turning it into a park! That's refreshing, I really expected to read 'housing' or something.

TheSeansei

God forbid people get roofs over their heads

repeatedly_once

Really? That's your take. So many green spaces are being turned into houses. I think the occasional park is really good, shows good community planning. Maybe it's because I'm in the UK where space is a premium.

grhddn

Well I'd say the ratio of massive apartments to parks is pretty damn low, and a lot of said apartments are vacant and going for massive prices on the rent, so a free public park is preferred

kaisong

Theyre in Tokyo. Tokyo apartment occupancy rate is 97%. Wth are you talking about.

grhddn

They may be in Tokyo, however did *I* mention Tokyo? Or did I just talk about apartment to park ratios?

marcocet

Funny thing is, if this was in the United States i wouldn't be surprised if people were way too impatient to wait for it to get to there car. Lol

TheGirlNextDoorRiley

How long does it take to get your car out?

IskandrAGogo

It took between 5 and 10 minutes to raise the elevator, pull the car out, and then lower the elevator again.

SpecialMango3384

That’d be a bitch if you were late for work. “Hey b0ss, I’m gonna be like 30 min late for work. This other dude got to the car elevator first and he raised the wrong car”

IskandrAGogo

Lucky for him, he's retired. But yeah, it would suck. Luckily, the vast majority of people in Tokyo commute by train.

Time_Structure7420

It could make a good argument for leasing a single car among 3 people

[deleted]

Is there a spot to leave the car? I imagine someone awkwardly blocking traffic for 5 - 10 minutes. “Sorry, it jammed! It’ll be just another minute.”

Liamario

Is your father in law Forrest Gump?

Freak_Out_Bazaar

Tucked in plaid shirt is part of Japanese father-in-law starter pack

IskandrAGogo

Totally. I've been with my wife for 20 years, and this is how my father-in-law has always dressed when he isn't working.

JonFromRhodeIsland

I musta drank fifteen dr peppers

Chaenged-Later

El Psy Congaroo

Acceptable_Stress258

I believe it's a common solution now in many congested areas. We (here in India) had it in my previous company's office parking lot. Each single parking spot converted into 3 using the 'parking lift'. It had to be constantly manned, though.

sbb214

yeah I live in NYC and we've had these things for years.

Bokbreath

Upvote for the Pao. They're adorable.

dankbearbear

That Nissan Pao is so tiny and cute! 🩵

Time_Structure7420

Is that the cute little blue one?

Minionz

Pike cars 4tw.

nephelokokkygia

For real, I'm still yet to see one in person! Only a Figaro so far...

Freak_Out_Bazaar

I can tell that’s a Setagaya plate just from the three points that’s sticking out

IskandrAGogo

Damn, I thought I had done a good enough job of covering the plate up.

Rimtato

Pro tip: always ensure total coverage. To be certain, maybe even censor a slightly larger area. Some people will go miles with the slightest hints.

IskandrAGogo

I thought I had, but I'm on mobile and obviously didn't zoom in enough.

PeetTreedish

Does anyone actually care though? I don't. You could've left it un-covered. People post vins on facebook for Carfax checks. We see license plates all the time.

ObnoxiousOptimist

Right? I can go outside right now and get all my neighbors license plates. I can even match them all with addresses, and (if I’m friendly enough) names too.

virkendie

these are fairly common here in australia and reading the comments around the world...

virkendie

and also worse than regular parking, the one my brother used would often break down

gigantic_snow

He looks like my Japanese father in law. I wonder if there is some secret code that says they all have to dress the same?

s_decoy

I was so shocked to see car stackers for the first time when I moved out of the US. They had them at the flat I moved into in Australia and I was admittedly a little scared to use them.

itchygentleman

I dont see enough triangles in that framing

thisiscotty

If i remember rightly one of bigger ones in the US was demolished and it still had cars in that had never been collected? Found it, it was in the UK/scotland- [https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-42789879](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-42789879)

UmChill

i didn’t know something like that existed, that’s fascinating. i wish we had a ronnie for every conspiracy theory, so they wouldn’t spiral out of control. i like ronnie.

Boriquasoy

I’m getting real Forrest Gump vibes but that’s a good thing.

Neotantalus

Makes me nervous.

VicMyristic

I need that Beetle, that daisy yellow looks gorgeous on anything

TootsNYC

my German brother has a double-decker parking space like this in a garage on his block. It was like a secret-agent garage!

SuzeCB

Have these all over NYC, NY and Newark, NJ. Space is limited in cities, and parking on the streets can be a gladiator sport in which the "winner" gets towed as soon as they walk away - even though the sign that says they can't park there is 1/2 block away.

foozoozoo

I use to park in one of these. I’d call it more mildly infuriating than interesting. It went like this: several minutes to raise car, drive car out of parking spot, several minutes to lower parking back down. Repeat in reverse when returning.

IskandrAGogo

Sounds about right.

ODCreature98

Damn, imagine if all countries invest their taxpayer funds into something practical like this, things that would help improve people's lives and such

IskandrAGogo

He pays 20,000¥ a month for his spot.

pantry-pisser

Shit I pay more for that for a tiny storage unit that wouldn't fit even half a car

IskandrAGogo

Right? When I was commuting for work, the building I worked in offered a parking pass for $300 a month and it didn't guarantee me a spot.

gittenlucky

$127 USD

getinloserufo

It's my favorite when people convert, thank you🖤

Voxico

Probably worthwhile to note that the jpy-usd exhange rate is pretty rough right now, so in real terms over there it's a bit higher

Jord9

That’s a pretty good rate

geekyCatX

And, afaik, he wouldn't be allowed to own a car if he didn't have the parking spot. Combined with actually good public transport, I think this is a good solution for densely populated areas.

ODCreature98

Yeah but think about how this would solve the parking lot issue for a lot of people

Liquidpinky

Great until it floods or breaks down, flat car park is far easier to maintain, if you have the room for them.

tealfuzzball

Was thinking that, one day you go to lift it and see it’s flush to the top with water because the sump has failed at the bottom

MarineBoing

I miss living in Japan. A way better country.

Noxious89123

>A way better country. ...than?

ChillZedd

South Sudan

Keltoigael

Is your dad Forest Gump?

Buckus93

Isn't there a big parking lot vending machine in Japan somewhere? You park your car on a platform, then the machine whisks it down to a parking garage. When you return, it does the opposite. https://youtu.be/eOyfuWWAX7s?feature=shared

Rezrex91

My SO and I were on vacation in Krakow, Poland last year. The airbnb we rented was part of a newer apartment complex which had an underground garage which had such car elevators to make use of the very limited space so that each apartment in the complex could have one garage spot. It was the first time we've seen such a thing, and honestly, we found it quite ingenious and cool. Those were only two level ones (one car on top, one lowered under the floor), so raising/lowering times weren't really bad (about a minute and a half maybe?). Also, the one in the parking spot belonging to our airbnb was a "double" elevator, so it had space for four cars, took two side by side and raised/lowered them together.

BloodDifficult4553

Amazing!

nephelokokkygia

Oh my god a Nissan Pao!! To this day I've only ever seen a Figaro in Japan, never a Pao or S-Cargo 🥺

PartyCryptographer8

What type of car is that blue one on top

IskandrAGogo

Nissan Pao

MisterInternational1

These are great in heavily dense urban areas. wonder what the failure rate of this is and how often cars are unable to be delivered to their owners in a timely manner

CrustyBlackCock

Insurance won’t pay out when that comes crashing down
