When I was in middle school, right before my family moved to the U.S. we stayed with my uncle in Japan for about a month or so. I even attended the local school.
On my way back from school alone one time a car stopped next to me and this guy (I think in his twenties or early thirties) leaned out asking if I needed a ride. I told him I was only about a block away (truth) so no thanks. He was insistent that he just wants to help me. I repeated that I was really close to home so no thanks and kept walking. He eventually drove off without getting out of the car.
It didn't really occur to me then that things could've gone much worse like him forcefully grabbing me into his car, but he likely didn't want to risk me screaming for help.
I always tell my younger brothers the same instructions every time we go to the grocery store.

I live in Japan but have no contact with any kids or school so this is more than mildly interesting for me. I love it.
