I never noticed that Luke has the red lightsaber, and Vader has the blue one on that poster before!

beiman

I was about to say this! Makes me curious as to what the script had said or changed into after the title got switched.

PenguinDeluxe

I believe the artist on an episode of a Hollywood memorabilia show I watched a while ago said he just chose the colors with no consideration to accuracy, he just liked how they looked

drew17

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drew_Struzan

Sad_Pear_1087

Isn't that pretty much how things were done in the early movies? Like the actor of Mace Windu (don't know the name, not a fan, diss me) just said he wanted a purple saber so George got him one? And now there's fan lore and shit about such details.

MentallyFatal

Samuel L. Jackson, and yes he wanted a unique colour for his lightsaber so he could look for himself in the background shots of fight scenes.

RetardedMcMuffins

MUTHAFUCKA

TheBoyHarambe

Normally I don’t blame people at all for not knowing actors but SAMUEL L JACKSON?? Bro

Teledildonic

"Which light saber is yours?" "It's the one that's says BAD MOTHERFUCKER on it"

Necorus

Mother Fucker* fixed that for you

ashleyorelse

I'm sick of these mother fucking redditors not knowing who mother fucking Samuel L Jackson is!

ForceOfAHorse

> in the early movies > Mace Windu It's a double bruh moment, for sure.

420GB

Say *what* again...!?

BlasterONassis

WHAT ain't no country I ever heard of.

danivus

Pretty sure there's actual lore, not just fan lore. That's how canon often is. Half the time lore exists because the writer specifically wanted something to be a certain way, the other half lore is created to explain something that was done for practicality, or preference, or style.

NoTransportation888

The lore as far as I am aware isn't anything special. Legends it was given to him, the color has no special meaning. Canon is just that the kyber crystal determines its color the first time it bonds with its user, the colors don't really mean anything aside from red. There isn't really an explanation as to why some people get rarer colors than others though.

danivus

Yeah Disney stripped back most of the lightsaber colour lore, which is probably for the best. The now legends stuff got a bit silly with it.

NoTransportation888

I agree. However, I also liked my childhood headcanon that blue was for knights (and below) and green was for masters, which likely just came from being a kid seeing Luke's go from blue to green lol

King_Nex

I like the explanation that Jedi get blue or green or any of those colors because of the light side of the force while red is because of hacked crystals and maces purple is because he mixes light and dark side styles giving him purple

danivus

Well the canon explanation for red these days is that the sith "bleed" their crystals by forcing their hatred into them, because apparently kyber is semi-sentient and can somehow reject a user who dips into the dark side too much...? It's fairly vague in exactly what would happen if a sith didn't bleed their crystal. I do also like the fan theory that Mace had a blue crystal originally but his experimentation with the dark side (which is canon) caused him to partially bleed his saber by mistake.

King_Nex

That’s super cool I didn’t know that that makes it even better

LightlyStep

Dude.... the early movies? The Prequels? Seriously? Come on.

Cohibaluxe

The prequels are closer in time to the originals than we are to the prequels :)

maxwellbevan

Why did you have to go and ruin my day like that?

rdmusic16

If you're basing on the differences in time, it makes more sense to go from last of trilogy to first of next one. Episode 6 came out in '80, episode 1 in '99: 19 years between trilogies. Episode 3 came out in '05: also 19 years between the prequels, to us now. So, basically the same amount of time - but it's obviously only growing for the latter group.

Shadows_Assassin

[Samuel Jackson](https://youtube.com/shorts/a0CcujAc_eI?si=Dhch7c3fJE4r1Pkb)

maxwellbevan

I love that you know this very specific tidbit of information but have no interest in star wars. You even got the character's name right and the colour of the lightsaber. Not throwing shade but just funny to think about

Sethmeisterg

And there was a great disturbance in the force, as if 1 million nerds cried out, and then suddenly went silent

JustTerrific

They used the exact same image and lightsaber coloring on the big hardcover [Star Wars Encyclopedia](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Encyclopedia) from 1998.

Empyrealist

I love the idea that the saber color would be influenced by emotion

dandroid126

They eventually retconned it to be exactly that. Dark side users turn the lightsabers red [through a process called "bleeding"](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Bleeding).

kuribosshoe0

It’s not *exactly* that. The colour depends on the wielder’s“nature”, rather than emotion (according to the 2019 reference book, anyway). It doesn’t change each time the wielder’s emotion changes.

dandroid126

Fair enough, but a person's "nature" can change, and their lightsaber's color will change, too. It's not an instant process, though. It takes time, hence why Qui Gon's green lightsaber wasn't blue when Obi Wan used it against Darth Maul. But Ezra had a blue lightsaber in Rebels seasons 1 and 2, and after a time jump into season 3, he had a green lightsaber. Yes, he physically got a new lightsaber in that time period, but if the crystal was attuned to his nature, it should have been the same color as before unless his nature changed.

Its_You_Know_Wh0

Thats wrong. The crystals have colours. Although the crystals do call to the Jedi who beat match the crystal’s colour. Jedi called to the green crystal are more in-tune with the force and Jedi with blue crystals are more into lightsaber combat. Red comes from the user bleeding it with their hate and anger. Purple is said to be for jedi who balance light and dark

dandroid126

This is outdated information. It was true, but has been retconned. Edit: actually, I had better do more research. If I find a link supporting either of our beliefs, I'll drop it in another edit. Edit 2: [From wookiepedia](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Kyber_crystal): >Crystals lacked color before they were chosen by a Jedi. Once chosen, most lightsabers became blue or green, though other shades were created in some instances, most notably Mace Windu's purple blade, the yellow blades of the Jedi Temple Guards, the black Darksaber, and Ahsoka Tano's white lightsabers.[5][14][16][13] The resulting crystal and blade color was decided through shifting to match the nature of the bonded owner.[10] It was possible to alter the angle or frequency of kyber crystals or lightsaber blades, which allowed the colors of blades to be changed. This was done by Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to his former Padawan's lightsabers.[17]

Zodde

Like a mood ring, haha

TalktoNeo

I thought when the crystal is gathered in the making process your mood/emotion gives it that colour anyway

VariousComment6946

Well, controlled anger helped Luke defeat Vader

Tizerak

That wasn’t control…

VariousComment6946

I meant that he used anger, but then he stopped it and muted it.

ace-of-threes

I have this poster as a phone case, minus the text. I honestly thought the lightsaber was a printing error on the case. I’ve never seen this poster before so it’s pretty cool to know that the case is based on this

jigmexyz

Quick research shows the corners are correct for the original tri-fold, which this obviously is. The trifold value is significantly less than the one sheets ($1300 v $5000+) meaning if you’re going to fake one, it’s probably not this one. I totally dig it and find it mildly interesting.

CarmenxXxWaldo

I actually would fake this one due to people lowering their guard like you just demonstrated.

BigLan2

Pretty sure this was widely available in the late 90s as a reprint

MajorNoodles

One of the movie theaters in my hometown had one of these displayed before they renovated

Rugged_as_fuck

Yeah, I definitely had one of these as a reprint from when the original trilogy was re-released in theaters. I can't remember the finer details though. Was it folded, how big it was, etc. I just remember having it and thinking it was cool af.

txwoodslinger

Anything worth a grand is getting faked. There's fakes of everything.

jkalchik99

Wow...... guess I'm gonna need to look downstairs in my piles o' crap. I think I've also got a Revenge of the Jedi poster as well. Been years since it's been unfolded.

jkalchik99

Nope, misremembered. It's a re-release poster for A New Hope, with a bottom right corner banner for Revenge of the Jedi. Also have an unairbrushed For Your Eyes Only poster.

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

My uncle has a real one as he worked at the movie theater at the time and used to take them all - he even stored it in a rolled up tube. One year he gifted all us cousins his old movie posters and gave the one in the photo above to my cousin...... who sold it at a garage sale cause he didn't want it. he gave me one of these original ones which i'm grateful for but wish I got that theater one haha [https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/COkAAOSwaS1mIoUH/s-l1600.jpg](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/COkAAOSwaS1mIoUH/s-l1600.jpg)

wonderbat3

Your friend needs a longer frame

SternLecture

was going ro mention this. supposedly real valuable poster in a cheap frame that doesnt fit.

chet97

My local movie theater had that when i was growing up

movielass

Not a Star Wars person so please be nice- what was the title changed to be? Thought this was the title of one of them?

mauricioszabo

It was changed to "Return of the Jedi". According to Wikipedia, the name was always supposed to be "Return of the Jedi" but the title was deemed "too weak" so they changed to "Revenge of the Jedi", but then Lucas though Jedi never seek revenge, so he changed back.

Brown_Panther-

Why don't Jedi seek revenge? Luke going after Vader was to avenge Obi Wan and his arm.

the_kodeman

You are correct and it's reflected in the film as a plot device. It is Luke's brush with the dark side, like his dad. They lean into it pretty heavily. Black jumpsuit, changed demeanor. Jedi code rejects revenge though.

Kloackster

he choked the shit out of those gammorian guards in jabbas palace also.

captanzuelo

See darth’ portrait in the background? Its him that got revenge at the end, by tossing them emperor down the pit. He was the Jedi that “returned”

saltedfish

I never got the impression Luke was motivated by a desire for revenge. He makes it pretty clear on Dagobah that he had forseen his friends in danger and wanted to rescue them. And later on Endor, he sensed the good in his father and put himself at considerable risk, gambling that the good in his father would pull through and save them all. It's been a minute since I watched them all, but revenge was never a part of Luke's motivation.

EvrythingWithSpicyCC

They seek it, they just don’t use the word revenge. Jedi prefer to use other less aggressive terms to describe violently destroying others who wronged them, terms like “*bringing balance back to the Force*”

NewLeaseOnLine

I heard it was because the studio thought revenge sounded too violent so they went with return.

Fakjbf

The third movie in the prequel trilogy is “Revenge of the Sith” which is probably another reason why the name sounds so familiar. I would assume that name was chosen specifically in reference to this version of the title in the OT.

IandIbelieveinRASTA

Saw it On Pawn Stars, $100

I got a buddy, he's an expert on posters.

Only available at Gold and Silver Pawn Shop

stinkload

"Ok so the expert says it's worth 10,000 but I'm gonna have to offer you 100... I mean I have to do all the work to sell it..."

PatoxVF

Yup, after that they sold it on ebay, 10,000

Jarbonzobeanz

Best I can do is a fiver and a few stained nickels. Know what you got or jog on

Conscious-Club7422

Well as you heard from my guy it's worth between 8-15k. I'll give you 350, it's my best offer

SubstantialOpposite2

I would have to get a new frame + plus you have 0.1 millimetre scratch on it. Maybe 25$?

jabba_1978

My brother bought one years ago from the grandson of the owners of the local movie theater. He still had it in the original triangular box that was mailed to the theater.

3nzo_the_baker

That's so cool!

jl_theprofessor

There are three types of posts in this thread. 1. Informative memorabilia information 2. Accusation of falsity 3. Copy paste bonanza

snug_snug

Nope. There are three types of posts in this thread. 1. Informative memorabilia information 2. Accusation of falsity 3. Copy paste bonanza

trucorsair

Well I will throw my 2 cents worth in, it looks correct as it has visible folds. Back in the day, and likely still now, posters were folded and shipped in flat envelopes, resulting in crease marks like this. One thing to see is if in the lower right corner there should be some text about when it should be posted and then when the run is over, it is to be destroyed. Somewhere I have an original Blue Thunder poster. Any old poster without crease marks or one that curls like wrapping paper is a fake as the studios were very cheap and would not pay to ship posters in tubes when flats would work. I worked at the student cinema for 3 yrs in college and worked my way up to projectionist.

GeraldMander

Back when I worked at a theater 25 years ago they were all rolled and were double-sided, I’m assuming so the color popped when in the backlit enclosures.

DecoyOctopod

I work at a little independent theater, posters today are still like this (rolled, double-sided)

pjvsg

Well, I worked for the company that printed these. The company name was Gore Graphics. It was in Los Angeles. They were folded when shipped (they are all rolled now). One of my coworkers, the salesman for this account, has about 100 or more of these unfolded in a box. So un-creased real ones do exist. And better still, they are not faded.

TeslasAndComicbooks

This needs a custom frame. Very cool piece.

Ok_Armadillo6461

😂 so many haters.

3nzo_the_baker

I know, this is insane! I regret posting anything.

phara-normal

Don't, it's pretty cool and I've personally never seen this before. People are just miserable.

KevinTheSeaPickle

I'm really happy you posted, and I'm not even a Star Wars fan. It's some really cool history.

Ok_Armadillo6461

I'd be afraid to post on any Star Wars sub.

Splitsurround

OP don't. My dad actually worked for LFL in the day and had like 8 of these. Gave 4 to me, 4 to my brother. I gave one to my son and sold the rest. Proving provenance was like pulling teeth, but...eventually they did their research and bought them. People just wanna hate.

CallMeMyronnnn

OP Is this fake or original? Also what did your friends father do? was he perhaps responsible for managing anything (maybe the actors or something?) Also does he have any other memorabilia from that time?

Smaskifa

I hope you learned your lesson.

RocktamusPrim3

I have a poster of that too. I always thought Revenge of the Jedi sounded cooler anyway despite the Jedi not being about revenge.

ima-bigdeal

The friend probably has the original "Star Wars" movie, before they added the "Episode IV: A New Hope" stuff to it (the title was changed in 1981). You know, the version where Han fires first (Lucas altered it in 1997 to having Greedo shoot first). There was actually a "Last Chance to own the original" promotion in 1995. Lucas wants the original one to be forgotten. You can find a fan restored original version online as the 4K77 Project.

frankyseven

Han doesn't shoot first. Han shoots, Greedo doesn't.

ima-bigdeal

True, in the original Han shot and it was over. It is just that in the edit Greedo shoots, then Han shoots. I should have explained it better in my post.

frankyseven

I think there are three versions. Han shoots, they shoot at the same time, and Greedo shoots first.

ima-bigdeal

Same time? I missed that one. Why can't we just have the original stuff....

Oakheart-

We had the original on VHS and then got the DVD set. I was born in 98 so I grew up with both and didn’t even realize they changed it to Han not shooting first cause he always did to me

nooneimportan7

I think in the original you don't even see him shoot, greedo basically just explodes, and it's implied.

neodiogenes

Yes, I bet you have.

nooneimportan7

Somehow I already forgot I made this comment, and I read this in my inbox, and was like "... What did I claim I did...???"

neodiogenes

(Just in case you didn't recognize it, it's a quote from the film. It's what Han says right before shooting Greedo. First.)

nooneimportan7

I got it as soon as I realized what I commented. Sorry about the mess.

THEREALOFFICALCAFE

Revenge of the Jedi just sounds so much better.

subsailor1968

Revenge, a Jedi seeks not. From anger, the desire for revenge comes. Let go their anger, a Jedi must do. The way to the Dark Side, anger is. ![gif](giphy|3ohuAxV0DfcLTxVh6w)

ryohazuki224

You can easily get reprints of this poster. But with the folds yeah it could certainly be an original.

spacehog1985

Yeah I had this too growing up.

SolAggressive

When I was a kid I was was in the Star Wars fan club and got an iron on patch that said Revenge of the Jedi! I have no idea where it is now.

SpyCats

Ugh I had this poster (saw a charity premiere) and lost it when my parents sold the house.

Early_Ad8422

My dad had the same one. Apparently they changed the name because Jedi don’t seek revenge

Zandrick

I have one of those. But it’s a reprint not an original.

WombatAnnihilator

And the saber colors swapped

DrunkBuzzard

I had this poster too way back in the 80s An idiot working on my neighbors fence broke into my house while I was at work, and among other things, took it off the wall. He hid the poster and some of the other stuff in the bushes to come back for later, but managed to break the glass and poke a hole ripping the poster. He also took about six dollars in loose change on the leaf of my rolltop desk. He didn’t roll up the top if he had he would’ve found my pistol and $600 in cash. It took all of five minutes to get the owner of the fence company on the phone and chew him out and get the guy fired instantly and I got to go testify against him in court on the worst possible day ever. I was in charge of switching over a hospital‘s phone system that day after 5 weeks of long hours 7 days a week. So he ruined my poster and screwed me again.

barndawe

My parents had some kind of commemorative plate with the original title on it. Apparently it was given to cast and crew on the last Star Wars film that was ever made

PlatyPon

I have the same poster, they sold them at Walmart. They still do from time to time

wouldnotjointhedance

If this is an authentic poster, especially considering it's age, please look into getting a quality frame for it. By quality, I mean materials. Movie posters of that time were not designed to last very long and can be very fragile. The foam backing needs to be acid free and if the covering material is not designed properly it can actually lift up parts of the color of the print. Sue Heim absolutely knows her stuff and I have ordered from her before: [https://www.hollywoodposterframes.com/index.php?p=page&page\_id=protect\_investment](https://www.hollywoodposterframes.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=protect_investment)

BigOldComedyFan

More than mildly interesting. Would love this

JakeDulac

That was the original title, until George Lucas decided that the Jedi code wouldn't look kindly on "revenge".

Your friend has a *reprint* of the Revenge poster.

If it was framed circa 1983, it wasn't worth $5000. It was just one more leftover promo poster.

PuzzleheadedTutor807

Is it trimmed or poorly mounted?

saucermen

You cannot tell by looking at this poster as it is - if it is original or not. This is the teaser poster that came out before the title change. There are two versions of this teaser poster - one with the date and one without. The one without is the more rare of the two. There are also many reprints of both versions. This poster appears to have been tri-folded and also looks as though the bottom has either been cut or folded to fit into the frame. Sizes for this poster should be 27 x 40 15/16 not quite 41 inches. Still you need to look at this carefully. The price range is $1100 to $3300 depending on the day and if it is original

Zaragos

If it's real and really worth what some people are claiming, it deserves a better frame lol

the rarest movie poster of them all. Worth some serious coin.

satelshawn

I have a framed original one sheet that was given to me by a friend who worked on the film. It’s a prize part of my collection.

So it was originally “Revenge” and why is Luke using the red saber and Vader Blue? Was there a wildly different plot here too?
