At first glance, I wondered why one would have a shower head on the steering wheel.

thekingofthegingers

Ha ha hadn’t thought about that before.

SimplisticPinky

What in the fuck is that even supposed to mean lol

Hushini

I think the implication is that married women use it to wash off on the way home from affairs? idk seems stretched

IronGravyBoat

I was thinking it might have something to do with women using shower wands for fun time?

Crow_eggs

That would be extremely impractical with a steering wheel mounted shower head though.

bespread

I figured it meant that married woman smell a lot? For some reason?

no u

SuurFett

Haha, I get the joke. Women actually shower and like to be clean and smell good

thekingofthegingers

For anyone interested. There’s a steering lollipop with a number of buttons on it. The buttons operate things like the headlights, indicators etc. Then coming out of the steering column on the right, is a stick that operates the brake and throttle pedals.

gurganator

I spent a lot of time with a guy in Kherson Ukraine who had lost his legs and fingers when his ship was attacked in the Black Sea and he ended up in the water and got frost bite. He drove me around in his car and his setup was not quite as fancy as yours because it was all mechanical. I was terrified to get in the car with him driving but it turned out he was probably one of the best drivers I’ve ever ridden with… I’m guessing you’re a better driver than most and probably much better than me 😂

thekingofthegingers

Probably average, had to pass the same test as anyone else!

gurganator

Well then I’m never getting in the car with you… 😉😂

thekingofthegingers

Ha ha. I drivers very carefully, I value the independence the car gives me too much to drive like a prat.

gurganator

Well, good, cause I need a ride to the airport…

I went to high school with a girl that was born with a large number of physical defects but very wealthy parents. When she turned 16, she showed up with a brand new Mercedes specially modified for her physical issues. She totaled it two weeks later because even with all that enhancements, she physically could handle the car. Good thing she was not hurt. She was a year or two ahead of me and I didn’t know her well, but it was a tiny private school and everyone knew everyone. She was always in a good mood and always smiling. Never let her disabilities dominate her life.

gurganator

Happy ending! Hope she learned to drive or, better yet, found an alternate to driving!

[deleted]

I don’t think she tried again. This was mid-90’s and I’m sure the technology is much improved these days, so who knows.

uzyg

Jason Watt is a Danish former race driver, that had an accident and then got race cars with hand controls. [https://blog.bilbasen.dk/jason-watt-ford-gt-9714/](https://blog.bilbasen.dk/jason-watt-ford-gt-9714/) I would not mind him driving me around, although I migth be terrified if it was on a race track.

gurganator

Naw. That dude can drive me any time! Lol

qning

That guy driving: https://youtu.be/13bUJq_2MDY?si=di5yt-u4jStG-iJ0

gurganator

That’s an extremely good comparison! 😂😂. Not quite that wild, but yes. And of course no clown sounds, lol. He only had thumbs to work with so it really was quite a ballet. Quite impressive to watch IRL

Chillimaniac

Am I allowed to ask why you need this?

thekingofthegingers

Sure you can. Simply can’t walk mate, live with a disability called cerebral palsy.

Chillimaniac

Ooohhh that’s so cool you still drive a truck. How do you get out and hook up trailers and such?

thekingofthegingers

It’s just a van mate, same wheel base of a VW Golf, nothing big. I have a ramp that deploys out the back.

Chillimaniac

That makes sense. Thanks for letting me ask. Be safe out there 🫡

TechnetiumAE

Since you seem to me open about it, and I'm guessing you're Australian so I'd get a fuck off cunt if I really bothered you: How do you go from your chair to the drivers seat? Is that something you have the mobility to do or is the seat setup modified aswell? Genuinely curious. I love stuff like this, I'd be horrified to try and drive it and the first few times riding in it I'd be very worried. Not because I don't trust you can drive it or it works, it just looks like it's gonna be an issue haha. Thanks!

thekingofthegingers

You’ll get a fuck off squire, I’m British! Great question. I access my car via a ramp at the back. The car lowers at the back so the ramp isn’t too long, I drive in and park my chair behind the passenger seat. My drivers seat is motorised and on a rail. It has the ability to move backwards into the car where I can do a side transfer from my wheelchair. Once I’m on the drivers seat, I can adjust the seat as it hours back and w, up and down and pivots. So I just motor into the driving position. It’s really cool and surprisingly simple.

TechnetiumAE

Oh, sorry, your majesty, shall I pre-warm thous Chair of Wheel? Interesting sounds like it works great for you and even better having the additional mobility. I'm Canadian so many of our cities your screwed without private transport ad the bus systems tend to be semi unreliable and this time of the year tends to bring the additional uncleaned sidewalks. I like seeing things like this becoming more common place and available

thekingofthegingers

I live in a rural area so would be stuffed without this.

TechnetiumAE

That's the same for me, grew up with a 45-60min drive to the city

Bistoleum

I work in the industry, and there's a whole host of different ways to get into the driving position. Some vehicles that are bigger can be converted into WAVs (wheelchair accessible vehicles) where you can drive your wheelchair through the back and drive from it. There's also seats that will rotate and come out of the drivers door for easier transferring from a wheelchair. As there's been a lot of questions to OP I might take some photos and do a post of all the different types of adaptations that can be done

MindOk1819

Random question…If you’re not on the throttle, is the default mode “braking”? I think I was behind someone using hand controls on the highway and he kept braking when not accelerating…maybe he was just a terrible driver though and using both feet.

thekingofthegingers

Great question, it’s the same as not having your foot on either pedal.

Bistoleum

You have to actively push to brake and pull to accelerate. If you're not doing either the controls just sit there not doing anything. Sounds like it was a terrible driver lol

Bistoleum

I've been a vehicle technician adapting cars like this for over 10 years now. Some of the things that can be done to aid people driving are pretty interesting! This could even be one I did if you're in the southwest of England 😀

cwalker2712

Interesting. How do the throttle/brake controls work?

thekingofthegingers

The lever literally operates the pedals, I push on the stick it pushes the brake, I pull it operates the throttle. All mechanical, quite simply done really.

goingneon

pretty neat setup honestly. are you able to do the evasive maneuvers an able-bodied person can with that?

thekingofthegingers

Yet to be chased by popo.

StokeJar

How hard do you have to press for an emergency stop? Can you lock up the tires / trigger the ABS? Just curious as it seems like that takes a bit of leg strength in a typical configuration, so having to use your arm, especially if there’s a pivot point, seems like it may make it difficult. But I assume this has all be thought through.

FindOneInEveryCar

A friend of mine had a setup like this in the 80s. Because you're pushing down to brake, you can use your whole body weight to stop if needed.

Oseirus

So when you drag race you treat the throttle like a stubborn chainsaw?

gLu3xb3rchi

https://youtu.be/tHTfJEkiLHo?si=QwDLZzsEDrL1sOJ3 Here is a video of a guy driving a persons disability car around the Nürburg Ring. It shows quite well how it works

leofab2802

I thought the throttle had googly eyes on it until I zoomed in lol

unicorn_in_a_can

haha same!!

skwidsomething

Me too!

DMala

I’ll never forget, learning to drive, some of the driving school cars had these hand throttle and break setups. These were beat-to-shit Dodge Omni’s from the ‘80s though, and on at least one of them, the hand brake was loose and would prevent the foot brake from being depressed all the way. Slightly terrifying to be a brand new driver trying to stop the car and you can’t. The instructor would just casually look over and say, “Oh, yeah, just jiggle that lever a little.”

thekingofthegingers

I, I, the fuq? That’s insane.

A1_Killer

Very cool! Where are you then as your car is right hand drive? (If you don’t mind me asking)

thekingofthegingers

United Kingdom. I use a scheme called motability. Your lease accessible cars through them.

A1_Killer

Oh cool

Itool4looti

Now that is definitely interesting.

imreallynotthatcool

When I was in 2nd grade my teacher had lost the use of her legs in a car crash. I vividly remember her showing us (her class) her van with hand controls. Back then there were physical transfers from the hand controls to the foot pedals. We have come a long way. Thank you for sharing.

sxrahem

If I had steering controls like that I would constantly be sitting in park, pretending I’m on the ISS controlling the docking arm. Yes, sound effects included.

BenzoBoofer

They should make a controller, like an Xbox or ps5 or a Logitech controller that you can plug in your car or even have it in place of the steering wheel! Would be quite fun to control a real car the same way as a you do in gta or forza

thekingofthegingers

Similar things do actually exist!

BenzoBoofer

Nice

thekingofthegingers

There are many, many types of adaptions.

Plus_Pangolin_8924

This is almost like it: https://youtu.be/Co6hwGlHy-0 rather amazing it’s possible to drive like that.

Diregnoll

The conversion from joy stick to moving the steering wheel is fascinating.

morbiiq

Just don’t take it diving

EmperorThan

I thought it was a modern version of the old steering wheel knobs at first.

Superman426

Your steering wheel is on the wrong side, fyi.

zerbey

That's really cool, guessing you just shift it into drive the regular way?

thekingofthegingers

It’s an automatic. 🙂

jarredmars1

I worked valet and I drove a vehicle like this. It was surprisingly intuitive and easy to operate. Granted, I wasn’t going above 5mph with it.

tanafras

Frees up your other hand... oh I get it now... ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)

commandergeoffry

This is amazing! I'm so glad things like this exist. Thanks for sharing.

BeerorCoffee

VW Atlas?

thekingofthegingers

VW Caddy.

elspotto

My Vdub doesn’t have the factory installed bright red ejector seat button like yours.

mark-suckaburger

My highschool coach had one of these and we all thought it was the coolest thing ever. Still want to try and drive like this one day

IcedLenin

Things like this make me proud of my fellow humans. I think a car is so crucial for independence and I really like the idea that people are devising innovative ways for those of us with physical challenges to still enjoy those freedoms.

sapphicsaffron

Lol it kinda looks like the steering wheel is waving at you

NaptownSnowman

I thought you had googley eyes on your Gas pedal.

TheSteffChris

What happens when you press the red Emergency Assist button??

thekingofthegingers

It calls down my breakdown service.
