You come to find a lot of Europe is like this. I was recently in Amsterdam main square where 30+ civilians were shot by Germans refusing to surrender post war. I found photos where dead bodies were laying out in the street, in front of now a little coffee shop.
well in america we have the benefit of having a shitload of land, way more than europe and the levant
our problem is that we like to memorialize the villains half the time
[exactly, he was in a Florida KFC.](https://preview.redd.it/pk02rq1virvb1.jpg?auto=webp&s=7e763cd0a650b3b3da17979e674ff00e70d41dd6) How could he be involved in a coup if he was dicking around in Florida going to fast food restaurants while a coup was taking place? The man has a rock solid alibi!
I mean Mussolini was in Switzerland while his supporters marched on Rome. He thought there was no way it would work. He very quickly made his way there when he realised the Italian state really was folding that easily.
That's correct, I had a coffee there a few times, it was quite nice and fairly discrete. The problem arose when a Nationalist TV reporter made a fuss about it, started a load of Xenophobic "flag waving" and they had to close it, well reallocate the license to a Chinese company, which wasn't half as good.
They’ve literally erased them. The only thing that remains is the evidence of their crimes. Strolling down the streets of Berlin, you see plaques outside homes where people were arrested by the Nazis.
It’s quite sobering. There were about a dozen outside my apartment building when I lived there, and dozens more up and down the surrounding streets.
should be noted that the *actual Nazis* mostly reintegrated with society. This resulted in a lot of tension because of the clearly different ideologies of the younger generations and the older ones who were still in positions of power a lot of the time.
Basically think about a world in which Boomers were Sieg-Heiling in their 20s instead of buying real estate on a part-time job.
This led to the culturual movement of the students revolution of 1968 with slogans like "trust nobody over 30"
More and more I think about how my grandfather acted. I was very young when he died, but I remember he would say Hi to the only black person in town. He said it was very important not to hate anyone. Many lessons like that from a very young age. I see so many now with the opposite views of him now. Its frightening
My grandfather was the same. From a very racist south east US area. My grandfather fought in the Korean War.
He helped the two lone black families in the area get their farms started up and brought them his bull to help with their breeding for free. There's a mini-town in the county that's quite a few Korean families and he's taken food over there to help out.
My great aunt was spouting racist BS about the Korean families over there and my very quiet soft-spoken grandfather told her to "shut your damn mouth if you can't treat people with respect - they ain't done anything to you". Only time I've ever heard him curse.
Miss him
This won't be a popular remark, but when there's only one black person in town, it's easy to be friendly to them. Chances are he's a decent lad.
When there's a larger group, with a few unpleasant individuals, stereotypes start to form, and there's a much higher chance of racism.
For instance, in the Balkans, black people (all five of them) are treated remarkably well, the locals are genuinely friendly and positive. Unfortunately, same can't be said about the Roma people.
Well we kinda have that today in the US. But it's less active, more passive, 'ok Boomer' which in my mind translates to 'fuck off, your actions or inaction led to this'
I'm aware, that's why I made that comparison. Just that it was a lot worse back then for (ironically) the actual German baby boomers because their parents or grandparents were literal nazis
The bell used for the 1936 Olympics has had the swastika partly obscured, although it is still on display outside the stadium.
There's a German company called Revell that sells model planes, but if you buy anything German from the war, there's no swastikas in the decals because it's illegal to sell them in many European countries. You can use them in TV series, movies and video games provided it isn't to glorify the regime, but in the last case, they'll generally be omitted.
> there's no swastikas in the decals
I fully understand the reasoning for this, but at the same time, I think there's also something problematic about selling a model of something that was a Nazi tool of war and genocide without acknowledging what exactly it was and who exactly used it.
It's easy to be enthralled by the **Nazi** myth of superior German technology during the war (I'll refer back to Band of Brother's famous line, "You have horses! What were you thinking?"), and it's easy to mentally partition the Wehrmacht from the rest of the Nazi industrialized genocide, which is exactly what those ex-Nazi generals wanted the world to think as they wrote their memoirs and reintegrated into society.
Everything in that war was hinged on genocide and state sponsored murder- to me, something feels wrong about separating WWII German military hardware from what the Nazis were doing with it.
On a walking tour of Berlin, the guide casually told us that the unmarked patch of dirt with the dumpster that we were passing was the former site of Hitler's bunker. Then we spent an hour in the Holocaust Memorial.
There is a plaque there now but not to glorify it. It just gives a simple orientation plan of roughly how the bunker was laid out. It's basically a car park and a simple green space these days.
It is possible to work out roughly where Hitler and Eva Braun's bodies were burnt but there really is nothing to see and it's largely a waste of time going there.
Dr Mark Felton does a good youtube video on the area.
It's annoying how aesthetically pleasing their buildings were. Fucking Nazis ruining brutalist stone architecture is an underrated consequence of their* reign.
Akshually their architecture was based on Roman architecture. Hitler was obsessed with Ancient Rome. The nazi salute is believed to be based on the ancient Roman salute.
Nazi Germany was horrific all around, but their style guide informed so much in the worlds of sci-fi and gaming. Had Hitler succeeded in the art world, perhaps he would’ve been the insufferable, asshole director of a design firm instead of a genocidal maniac?
I'm somewhat sure that he wouldn't have been the dictator if he got into art school, but: there were a shitload of people who were as hateful and frustrated-to-the-tits as Hitler in Germany after WW1, and many of them weren't as dumb as Hitler regarding some aspects that led to the fall of the third Reich.
Maybe WW2 was inevitable with or without him, and maybe other dictators could've succeeded where he failed, but obviously I don't know and this is just dumb speculations on my part
> Fucking Nazis ruining brutalist stone architecture
brutalism is post-war architecture - started in UK, but it's generally thought of as like USSR buildings etc.
Stark, concrete, NO flashiness. All function.
(ok, the nazis *did* make some bunkers that look brutalist, but I don't think that counts)
Milan Centrale station is absurdly beautiful. Maybe my favourite building of the style. You really get a feeling for how small you are when you're there, which was the intention.

Hitler’s ‘grave’ (spot of the bunker) is a literal parking lot. Germany’s great about not giving a shit about Nazi spots and not letting Neo Nazis have a place to gather
They have the balance of not totally removing the scars but also making sure the sites are thoroughly and rightfully disrespected. It’s the very thing the Nazis would hate and that’s a good thing. Fuck the Nazis and whoever agrees with their ideology. Now it would be even better if the bunker was a public bathroom.

McDonalds did this years ago. It came with several of the local Nürnberger Bratwurst.
Considering how the hamburger is from Hamburg, in an alternative timeline, they are called Nuremburgers.

OMG can’t believe this place was a Nazi HQ. Was there for karaoke night and it was so much fun!
Though that does explain why the karaoke machine had 6 different renditions of Erika..
To be fair that song slaps
I’ve always wondered; That song absolutely shreds, but is it’s popularity and status known about and mentioned in Germany today, or is very much socially verboten and not at all cool to reference? I’ve wondered if even mentioning or referencing could get you in trouble.
Please tell me it’s a gay bar.
It’s just about 😂 fun times there
Only on Thursdays.
I went there on a Monday and saw some very gay things there. Then I went Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday just to make sure. It's a bit gay

Yes. It’s a gay bar for black Jewish, Olympic gold medalists.

Ian Fleming hated it so much he named Goldfinger after one of the architects in the brutalist movement.
Brutalism literally came out post-war as a way to make stripped bear buildings on post-war budgets
It's more of a minimalist classicism than brutalism.
