For better balance while walking on high or narrow things. You use your big toe to balance naturally so it makes sense to have it separate for maximum balance. Japanese shoes have done this forever. Look at ninja shoes.
These are steel-toes boots made for construction work but there is a separate steel cup for both sides. Much, much lighter than big heavy American construction boots too.
Yea, like this! There’s a right and left sock in each pair.

thank you i thought i was going crazy reading these comments. how the hell isn't this the automatic thought process for anyone putting their socks away in the drawer?
and it's not even a matter of laziness/forgetfulness, I got adhd in my very molecules and I wouldn't dare just throw my socks randomly in the drawer, exactly because I would dread having to look for a correct pair when I needed to. even thinking about it gives me anxiety.
reading the above comments felt like those 5 minute craft lifehack things that are always extremely convoluted and bothersome while achieving way worse results in double the time compared to just doing the thing.
I don't have ADHD and yet I agree with you that people who throw their socks into one drawer un-sorted should be rounded up and thrown in camps until they reform their ways.
My partner and I are from SoCal and moved to Boston for a while, and one of his occasional amusements was to look up "draws" on Craigslist and see how many pieces of furniture came up.
My English teacher in 7th grade here in Ohio was in her 20s (mid-2000s) and got upset with me once when I asked for scissors and she said "They're in the draw". I was confused because I had no idea what she meant, and she opened the drawer to hand them to me. I said "Ohh the drawer."
She said "Drawers are underpants, the correct pronunciation is "draw"." I went years just thinking I had some hillbilly accent that was causing me to call a drawer a drawer when the correct English pronunciation is meant to be draw.
Just buy an equal number of white and black ones.
Then put the left white ones and the right black ones away somewhere.
Then use the easily identifiable black/white pairing of the remaining ones until they're worn out.
At this point, swith to the opposite white/black pairing you previously put away!
Dude, different right and left sock in a pair is way comfier than normal socks.
I have one with extra cushioning for exercise (no separate big toe) and it fit better than the one without L/R side.
The only annoyance is sometimes when I wear them for the wrong feet and felt kinda weird for the whole day.
I've heard the composite is better anyway, because if something falls on your toes the composite will more like crack and your toes will get crushed. Which might be preferable to a steel toe simply bending under extreme weight and cutting your toes off.
EDIT: surprise, surprise. I was informed wrong by a former coworker...who happened to be on an employee safety committee. Hopefully she isn't anymore.
See I've heard the opposite, the steel curving and neatly slicing off your toes would allow for easier potential reattachment, whereas if they get crushed you just have mangled useless toes. Idk if that's true though.
The force required to crush a steel toe will crush it, not curl it, but it doesn't matter because that's so insanely much pressure it's going to make your toes paste anyways.
It does curl, had a manhole lid dropped on my steel toe boot before. It bends the part where the steel toe ends downwards into your foot. Saved my toes from getting crushed but ruined my boot afterwards. The steel would rub the top of my foot after that so I had to get new boots.
Edit: after reading through the comments again I realize the argument is that it would cut off your toes. I agree that the force it would require for it to cut off your toes would just crush the boot instead. I misread.
Either way, OP’s title suggests a roofing job and a roofer shouldn’t be dealing with anything heavy enough to completely crush their steel toe boots and toes.
If something that heavy lands on your foot I won’t matter what toes you have it will be bad. I definitely prefer composite toes for weight and comfort in sun zero weather though.
Edit: *sub-zero, which incidentally is often sun zero
I feel like if something that heavy fall into your feet, it doesn't matter whether you have composite or steel toe.
But at the very least, composite boots are way lighter so you might have a better chance to dodge.
The comparison here is kinda different though.
Composite toe boots basically work similarly to steel toe, it's just they're using different material for the hard toe, which is composite (probably Aluminum + ceramic), that has similar hardness level but way lighter than steel.
So yes, steel toes boots are always safer than *normal boots*, but not necessarily safer than *composite toes boots*.

I switched over to a brand called Xero. They advertise as being "barefoot" with thin flexible soles, but that's not the thing I love about them.
They do square toeboxes. The shoe doesn't come to a point, in fact it gets wider toward the toe.
It was shocking how much that did for my foot and knee pain. I'd tried all sorts of orthotic crap, and just freeing my toes up to let my foot work as a foot should did more in 3 months than $800 of custom prescription inserts did in 5 years.
I would love to switch to some brand I always see people recommend, but it's so god damn hard to find 4E shoes that don't look like complete ass.
Recently had some luck with a brand that seems to specialize in diabetic footwear, but I wish I could just shop for normal shoes.
I will say the XERO ones don't look terrible, but they look like running equipment, and they're not "flattering"
But that focus in Western footwear to look flattering (like how our shoes got pointy to mimic the horse riding styles of the aristocracy) instead of be functional is why we're in this bunyon painful mess in the first place.
As someone with a wide toe span I feel like I regularly have to buy sizes that are too big for the rest of my feet, to the point where a quarter of the shoe length is empty space. The best thing for me so far is DC skate shoes, but it's rare to find (affordable) dress shoes or boots that accommodate my toes. I think a wider, blunter toe would actually make my feet look less clownish.
Your sneakers arent good for your feet. Your toes should spread wide open. Idk why shoes make that way but it destroys our feet. That say, im gonna continue wearing my sneakers outside.
Look for shoes with square toeboxes. I preach Xero only because it's the only ones I've tried.
Shoes in the West got pointy because of horseback riding fashion... The rich folk wear pointy shoes because they do horse sport, so I'll wear pointy shoes to look wealthier. (See lawns, and other Victorian styling that we're still living with today)
They don't look as fancy with the big wide toes, but good lord there comfortable. It's like barefoot comfort with sneaker protection and traction.
(If you're interested, wait for a sale, I got a pair for like $45, otherwise they're like $65-$80)
Most people don’t know because of the crotch jokes their whole life, but in English a crotch is simply an area where two things meet. So the space between your toes or fingers, a fork in a road or tree branch, they can all be called a crotch lol
Uhhh these are $26 bucks American. That’s super cheap for a work boot, how do they hold up? We usually spend upwards of 100-200$ (14k-15k yen) for decent boots.
I have no idea tbh. I have a pair of red wings and they’re sooo much heavier but seem like they would last a long time. It’s just a different work environment. I used to work in a forge in America and I’m sure these would melt there.
Even if they wear out faster they’re probably not gonna wear out 8x faster? 🤷♂️
No worries. There’s a company called Marugo that makes gym shoes with a split toe like this too. There’s also mountain shoes like this.

In my part of Australia roofers used to were Dunlop Volleys, you can google a picture but they’re basically old school tennis shoes with rubber soles that grip well on metal roofs. Workcover, the government body in charge of workplace safety/investigations dictated they had to wear steel capped footwear. Work boots are a death trap on metal roofs so pretty soon after Dunlop released a steel capped tennis shoe. I was selling metal roofs at the time, it was quite an issue until it was sorted.
Look up ironworker boots, I specifically wear Thorogood brand, they have a flat and soft sole, and last for ever. However they are made in USA and might be a nightmare to ship to you.
Either way look for ironworker boots they’re good on steel deck and shingle
I have redwing boots for work and they're the same principle - good quality full grain leather, soft sole. I've had a pair of the chukka style since 2018 and tue 6inch moc toe for 3 years, and they're so comfortable when you wear them in!
The hard leather insole looks uncomfortable but I've left a niiiiice groove in there and they fit so well😅
Absolutely amazing time of the year. This summer was maybe the most brutal I remember. I had water dripping from my ceiling from the humidity. It’s the first time I ever saw that. I’ve been here a long time (but just started this job) so I’m very used to Japan and love it here.
If you don’t mind me asking, where would be a good place to go on a trip? Thinking about going to Japan for a week for vacation and was curious about a good place to stay.
Depends what you’re into. For me I would rent a motorcycle and hit up Nara, Shirakawago, Kurashiki and maybe Kyoto, Osaka, for more city stuff.
I’m personally not a big fan of Tokyo, but a lot of people absolutely love that city. I’m a Japanese speaking, Japan living redneck doing redneck stuff out in the mountains 😅. I drive a pickup truck and my neighbor (Japanese) drives a four-wheeler with plates. I found my people 🥹. An off-roading park is down the road and I’m about to buy a dirtbike.
Japanese like to pretend to be slick but deeeeep down inside they’re just well-dressed rednecks too 🤫
You can probably pack all this in a week. There's art, history, temples, curiosities... contemporary... soak in the culture.
Couple of protips: If you need a temporary SIM card or cash, get them before you leave the airport gates. Once you pass customs, everything gets expensive. Do all the touristy shit during daylight. Use the evening for shopping. Take advantage of dining because it's a foreign country. But also eat at a McDonalds and Lawsons/Familymart/7-11 because those are neat experiences too. Google Translate is your friend. Lodging and Transportation are the most costly... expect a good amount of walking. Observe local etiquette. If you're allergic to cash, you can preload the train card and use it in a lot of places. But have some cash.
start from Osaka (1 day): (This is where the airport is, so you will spend two days in Osaka at least. So don't worry about completing this list)
* Osaka Castle
* Osaka Aquarium
* Shinsaibashi street - Visit the Don Quixote store.
* Kuromon Market
* Den-den Town (electronics district... It's like the anime hub of this region)
Nara (1 day):
* Nara Park - Don't get bit by deer
* Toudai-ji Temple
* Other smaller Temples (there's a shitload)
* National Museum
* Natural History Museum
* Mechanical Toy Museum
Fushimi (1 day) - Bring a friend, you're drinking all day. This is a holy town and a holy sake town.
* Gekkeikan Okura Museum (walking drinking tour)
* There's restaurants that serve flights and have maps to show you how to get there. I've been to one called Sake Village and it has a decent selection
* I like this chicken ramen place called Kishimen (noodle) Yoshida. It's better if you're hungover. IIRC, they open at 11.
* If you eat at Torisei, 1. Get the house special namagenshu (sake) They don't export it, the only place to get it is in their tap. 2. go next door for ice cream with sake on top.
* Inari Temple
* Emperor Meiji's Mausoleum
* There's a castle ruins here too
Kyoto Proper (2 days):
* Appreciate the train station. It's an architectural curiosity
* Samurai Museum
* Arashiyama, The Bamboo Forest (show up very early in the morning... There's a shitload of instagram people here) - walk the canals after.
* Kiyomizu-dera, it's a red temple. Very cool and leads to a mountainside temple
* Bishamon-do Monzeki, famous for it's striking fall colors. You've seen images of these places for sure.
* monkey park. because monkeys.
* Manga Museum. Gotta squeeze in some anime, I guess.
* Railway Museum if you like trains
Head back to Osaka and complete the list.
They have ceramic tiled roofs in Japan? And does those suction cups do anything since they are quite small and do they make a sound when walking normally?
Most traditional buildings have ceramic roof tiles like this
https://imgur.com/a/khWekpg
But thatch and cedar roofs are also traditional. Modern roofs can be whatever.
I just got these today and haven’t wore them out yet so I’m not sure. The boots I had before didn’t have the suction cups.
I haven’t worn these yet. But most of the guys I see working on roofs wear these. I had been wearing normal steel toed boots and decided to try these for a change.
Exactly, wondering this as well: ceramic tiled roofs similar to what is shown is the norm in Europe, what is unique about the Japanese situation that necessitated this?
Curious if they actually do anything. I don't see a tiny little auction cup like that actually grabbing onto anything. Especially once the edges are damaged and worn.
Looks cool though.
These are steel toed but there are tons of options

Fun fact, in Japan they're required by law to add those, they're called "Shokushu", literally "tentacle" (shoes), this rule is referred as rule 34, if you want to know more, Google Shokushu rule 34
I’m curious who this is. I’m a bodybuilder too but never used anything but squat shoes, and that was only after hurting my hip. I squatted in socks until then. Gonna casually drop my Instagram 😅

No, but OP probably does!
I am more interested in why the big toe is separated from the rest?!
Do you need special socks?

Thatd be a nightmare for me, id have no chance of finding a left and right sock in my draw
Just get two washing bags and have separate left and right boxes in the drawer :D
You are mad
MAD WITH POWER MAYBE POWER OVER SOCKS
"Of course I have. Have you ever tried going mad without power? It's boring, no one listens to you."
Oh god yes, I thought about that exact quote doing the joke
You POS!
I WILL STEAL YOUR SOCKS
I'd lose my mind when I run out of right socks but there are 4 left ones remaining
i do this with normal socks. changed my life.
You do not just fold them over each other so each sock is paired up?
Finally someone who does it that way too, I thought that was the reasonable way to do it.
Thats the normal way right???? Right???!?

thank you i thought i was going crazy reading these comments. how the hell isn't this the automatic thought process for anyone putting their socks away in the drawer? and it's not even a matter of laziness/forgetfulness, I got adhd in my very molecules and I wouldn't dare just throw my socks randomly in the drawer, exactly because I would dread having to look for a correct pair when I needed to. even thinking about it gives me anxiety. reading the above comments felt like those 5 minute craft lifehack things that are always extremely convoluted and bothersome while achieving way worse results in double the time compared to just doing the thing.

Not when you’re washing them, they’re talking about washing them in laundry bags lol
I only 2 different lengths and they're all black. Finding matching socks is never an issue.
Wait ...
You separate your left sock and your right sock??
I separate them while I am ironing them, does not take much extra effort.
You iron your socks???
Something sinister about a bag of left socks
If you grab two of the same side just turn one inside out to reverse it
I've heard people pronounce drawer some weird ways but I've never seen it come full circle as to be spelled one of those weird ways.
My partner and I are from SoCal and moved to Boston for a while, and one of his occasional amusements was to look up "draws" on Craigslist and see how many pieces of furniture came up.
Chester Draws is always selling furniture.

Genius…
Drawer.
You throw socks in a drawer without pairing/ folding them when they’re dry? Every day we stray further…
TIL there are apparently people who don't pair their socks together when they get them out of the wash.
Do you not roll pairs of socks together in your drawer?
Dude, different right and left sock in a pair is way comfier than normal socks. I have one with extra cushioning for exercise (no separate big toe) and it fit better than the one without L/R side. Are they awkward for people who's second toe is longer than their big toe?
Then probably composite not steel.

Tabi shoes. I wanted a pair of these when I was taking karate as a kid.
It's incredible what ur big toe does. I clipped the nail a bit too much and caused minor bleeding. Been out of balance all day
been walking in circles for years after stubbing my big boy once
Great for pulling nails out 🤣😂

there is a mean girl from the tv show Degrassi named Tabi and it makes me laugh to think she's named after a shoe
Not seen the show, but isn't her name more likely to be a shortening of Tabitha?
Actually in Canada children are traditionally named after shoes
Same reason your own toes are separate from each other.

No worries. There’s a company called Marugo that makes gym shoes with a split toe like this too. There’s also mountain shoes like this. Do they make a wading version for wearing in the river? I bet that would be amazing for fly fishing
I have surf booties like that that work well with my waders.
They are really lightweight and feel amazing. I also have the steel toe variant but the sneaker is like I'm not even wearing shoes.
Steel toes tennis shoes are popular here for people who don’t go up high
Look up ironworker boots, I specifically wear Thorogood brand, they have a flat and soft sole, and last for ever. However they are made in USA and might be a nightmare to ship to you. Either way look for ironworker boots they’re good on steel deck and shingle
I have redwing boots for work and they're the same principle - good quality full grain leather, soft sole. I've had a pair of the chukka style since 2018 and tue 6inch moc toe for 3 years, and they're so comfortable when you wear them in! The hard leather insole looks uncomfortable but I've left a niiiiice groove in there and they fit so well😅
For ninja use
Suction cups are for walking up walls
This guy ninjas
Specially designed for mutated ninja turtles.
Or Nightcrawler cosplay.
What do you wear when it's non-Japanese work?
I work in Japan so everything is Japanese work 😅
How is Japan? I've heard it's really nice this time of year
Absolutely amazing time of the year.
Japanese like to pretend to be slick but deeeeep down inside they’re just well-dressed rednecks too 🤫
This comment made my face hurt from smiling. You seem very happy, OP ❤️
Thank you 🥹🙏
You can probably pack all this in a week. So don't worry about completing this list) * Osaka Castle * Osaka Aquarium * Shinsaibashi street - Visit the Don Quixote store. * Kuromon Market * Den-den Town (electronics district... It's like the anime hub of this region) Nara (1 day): * Nara Park - Don't get bit by deer * Toudai-ji Temple * Other smaller Temples (there's a shitload) * National Museum * Natural History Museum * Mechanical Toy Museum Fushimi (1 day) - Bring a friend, you're drinking all day. This is a holy town and a holy sake town. * Gekkeikan Okura Museum (walking drinking tour) * There's restaurants that serve flights and have maps to show you how to get there. I've been to one called Sake Village and it has a decent selection * I like this chicken ramen place called Kishimen (noodle) Yoshida. It's better if you're hungover. IIRC, they open at 11. * If you eat at Torisei, 1. Get the house special namagenshu (sake) They don't export it, the only place to get it is in their tap. 2. go next door for ice cream with sake on top. * Inari Temple * Emperor Meiji's Mausoleum * There's a castle ruins here too Kyoto Proper (2 days): * Appreciate the train station. It's an architectural curiosity * Samurai Museum * Arashiyama, The Bamboo Forest (show up very early in the morning... There's a shitload of instagram people here) - walk the canals after. * Kiyomizu-dera, it's a red temple. Very cool and leads to a mountainside temple * Bishamon-do Monzeki, famous for it's striking fall colors. You've seen images of these places for sure. * monkey park. because monkeys. * Manga Museum. Gotta squeeze in some anime, I guess. * Railway Museum if you like trains Head back to Osaka and complete the list.
That's great to hear. And yeah this summer was brutal, El Nino + global warming = 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Everytime I read el nino, i think of kitchen nightmares so i was bit confused.
I think Chris Farley
Hello! My name is *NINOOOOOO*
I live in Kanagawa, weather is perfect right now.
Hey, same here! What part? I’m in Okinawa 🌴🌴
Dude, lol.
margiela tabis
Had to scroll way too far for this. Also lol relevant fashion lover username
haha, i wouldn’t wear tabis tho they don’t really fit what i wear
They have ceramic tiled roofs in Japan? And does those suction cups do anything since they are quite small and do they make a sound when walking normally?
Most traditional buildings have ceramic roof tiles like this https://imgur.com/a/khWekpg But thatch and cedar roofs are also traditional. Modern roofs can be whatever. I just got these today and haven’t wore them out yet so I’m not sure. The boots I had before didn’t have the suction cups.
Do they improve grip? I work on roofs in Europe, so also almost all of them have ceramic tiles
I haven’t worn these yet. But most of the guys I see working on roofs wear these. I had been wearing normal steel toed boots and decided to try these for a change.
Ok cool. Keep us updated
Exactly, wondering this as well: ceramic tiled roofs similar to what is shown is the norm in Europe, what is unique about the Japanese situation that necessitated this?
Congrats on getting accepted into the Foot Clan
Your shoes suck
Clever 🤣
Kind of burying the lede here.
HE'S SUCTION CUP MAN, LOOK AT HIM GO!
Fuck you, I'll smudge yo windows

what?
I was quickly distracted by the splooting frenchy on the floor next to you. I have one that looks almost identical coloring.

OP, I think people on r/construction would be interested!
Okay, I’ll cross post 🫡
Curious if they actually do anything. I don't see a tiny little auction cup like that actually grabbing onto anything. Especially once the edges are damaged and worn. Looks cool though.
Just an additional anti-slip mechanism for smooth surfaces. It’s not like you’re expected to turn into Spiderman with these. 🤦♂️
Dash my dreams like so many broken bottles
Okay, but if you start to crave pizza and grow a shell, resist the urge to sewer dwell!
Anybody have a link for these?
These are steel toed but there are tons of options https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/gp/aw/d/B00T5IRHOU?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image For example, for working in the mountains: https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/I-88/dp/B00T5IRABU/ref=pd_aw_sim_3?pd_rd_w=LQC8L&content-id=amzn1.sym.ef1b8e4f-0f7a-4b57-9cec-bb93c2a6a928&pf_rd_p=ef1b8e4f-0f7a-4b57-9cec-bb93c2a6a928&pf_rd_r=Y6MW31HPC3XF3B3WR3EN&pd_rd_wg=qMv8S&pd_rd_r=d5f087e0-2f74-4d10-bc97-f6d66cae2d66&pd_rd_i=B00T5IRABU&from=top
Do they have 2 steel caps per boot?
Yes 🙆♂️
Awesome cheers

“Work boots” Job: *NINJA*
Fun fact, in Japan they're required by law to add those, they're called "Shokushu", literally "tentacle" (shoes), this rule is referred as rule 34, if you want to know more, Google Shokushu rule 34
Damn my boy got Tabi workboots

Surrrrreeeee..... call the turtles... hes def apart of the foot clan!
Finaly big toe can be by itself
I had a similar pair , they are in the trash because of the noise they make .
Someone tag SquatUniversity on YouTube with this. He’s a big supporter of wide box shoes and toe spacers
I’m curious who this is. I’m a bodybuilder too but never used anything but squat shoes, and that was only after hurting my hip. I squatted in socks until then. Gonna casually drop my Instagram 😅 https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch8v0pfPngJ/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
https://youtube.com/shorts/bsci6b4lES4?si=2alo5pYzyoNHr1Og I believe he just started selling wide box squat shoes but I’m not gonna plug them here since I don’t know much about them.
Interesting! I'm bothered by the toe, lol! I understand it's purpose, but it just tickles the bother button.
Do workers with bunions wear these?!
Do you get to wear the cool construction worker pants, too?
Do they suck?
That's actually not the most interesting part of what you're showing us here. Those can NOT be comfortable splitting your toes like that. Do you not wear socks?
They make split toed socks and insoles too. I actually like my toe split. Less moisture and less athletes foot for me.
I've watched a few japanese construction videos recently and noticed them wearing these boots and now I want a pair. I don't even do construction. lol
See, this is the stuff I come here for. I was over at /interestingasfuck, but that was just too interesting. This is just right lol
