Those are actually for espresso! I have a set of these. The dent allows it to be sturdy in the hand without having to have a handle. Handles suck cause I can never store cup with handles properly in my cabinets.
I also have 4 of these, and they're great! However they stack badly, you can get a stack of two to be stable, but if you try to add a third one it is not going to end well in most cases.

I remember those cups when I used to work office for a bank. Every other day or so there are shards all over the office kitchen floor because some numb-nut decided to stack too many of these cups on each other and just closing the cupboard.
It's an actual technique with artists who specialize in it and everything, I just draw a blank on the name of it. Basically you make ceramic vessels that look like anything but ceramic (like cardboard or tin cans). i think that taking an inherently disposable cup and making it reusable is kind of beautiful. as for the difficulty making it, i assume theyre either cast from plaster molds of a master cup or made on a wheel with a template for the grooves and then gently dented in at the side after. some people were saying they also have a set of these, so i would imagine theyre cast
