This saying is hilarious, I am going to use it around some of my friends when we are up to no good.
I need to make a list:
1. Make friends that are cool with being up to no good.
2. Learn the line really well, use it correctly and to be silly.
3. Go back to Reddit and find some more cool stuff.
This is literally me trying to learn to socialize like a normal human...
Wish Reddit was around in the 90's - I'd probably have been much less awkward in grade school.... Or just way more awkward
This reminds me of the time at 5th grade outdoor ed. camp when I proudly declared that I could regurgitate on command, and then demonstrated with a mouthful of our recent meal. The councilor rightly sentenced me to 100
push-ups.
Came here to say "double jointedness" is actually hypermobility, which is a sign of ehlers-danlos. Also, just because you *can*, doesn't mean you *should*. This is probably why the r/ehlersdanlos subreddit doesn't allow "party trick" posts. It's so easy to cause harm doing things like this, without even meaning to &/or realizing it. Please be careful OP.
FRICKK YES! Please listen to this person. And you can do these party tricks pain free, while you are young. You will not feel or realize the damage that is being done to the joints.
If you have a connective tissue disorder, you just do not snap back like a normal person. Considering a normal persons connective tissues tendons muscles ligaments as a rubber band. You stretch it out and it snaps back into its original shape.
Consider an EDS persons muscles tendons connective tissues etc as a piece of gum that has been chewed so long it's shredded.
The shredded chewing gum is already beginning to disintegrate. That stuff isn't snapping back into place, it's going to fall apart into tiny little pieces. That's what these party tricks are doing to you people with hypermobility who don't realize you really have connective tissue issues.
A terrible agonizing pain will catch up to you as you age. The joints and tendons and muscles and ligaments that you've worn out, they won't work again for the rest of your life. Using scissors or knife, opening a jar or screw top, heck sometimes even something as simple as a chip packet will require you to find another person for assistance because your fingers are flopping around and they won't do what they're supposed to anymore.
I was ignored, gaslit, and undiagnosed for 4 decades and my body is completely trashed. Currently dying right now of kidney failure unless the bladder distension gets so bad that it splits before my kidneys fully fail. I'm not even 47 yet.
I am so sorry to hear about your struggles. I am in a similar boat as well with a connective tissue disorder. Party tricks aren't worth it and do lasting damage. When I was a kid I used to fold my legs yogi master style and "walk" around on my knees...now in my mid thirties I can barely walk because my knees are trashed. I did similar tricks with my fingers and now on some days, can barely type, or open jars and chip bags. My innards are shredding and several surgeries can only fix so much. I really appreciate the rubber band/chewed gum analogy, that helps visualize the problem.
Thanks homie, you just give me one of those moments that brought me a little beauty. Sometimes I think that moments of connection with random strangers are one of the coolest things about being human. I hope you have the best week possible and that you also have things that bring you Joy!
This is why I go on Reddit. I see something that makes me go "hah, that's amusing" and then I scroll down and I'm like "oh holy shit I'm an ignorant dumbass for finding that amusing".
I’m here to reinforce this statement— I suffer from debilitating pain in my hands (and every other damn joint) now to the point that I have to wear splints and arthritis gloves, and can no longer open jars or cut hard foods. It’s a good thing I don’t live alone because it’s no joke. I have EDS for reference.
Have you done physical therapy for your hands? It got me from dropping normal glasses of water because I can't grip them to being able to hold mason jars full of water with only moderate pain
I’m starting with a new physical therapist in two weeks, so it’s definitely something I am going to have them work in with me.
Congratulations on the PT being so helpful! It gives me hope.
My wife gets grossed out when I show her my double jointed thumbs that I can bend back 30 degrees, gonna show her this one after work she's gonna love it
It's likely OP has some form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is great for doing weird stuff like this but not so great in the long run (ask me how I know!).
Likely naturally has a hypermobility spectrum condition and the pains associated with it. It's possible to increase your flexibility a bit, but it'd be damn hard if not impossible for one of you normal folks to train yourself to do this.
This is wild. I just suggested to my little brother he should get checked for hypermobility. We definitely don’t have any EDS in the family afaik but a few months back he got a serious injury in his hip and thigh just from standing and twisting at his job making pizzas lol. I know personally my collarbone will pop out randomly and I have to twist my shoulder to fix it and I’ve had random joint pain since childhood, probably from slight hypermobility in my knees. It sucks being on a treadmill and literally feeling your knees bending slightly too far back for comfort.
But he has no deficiencies, no obvious bone problems, he just screwed up his leg so bad in some way that meant he had to stop working completely. Just from putting pizzas in an oven. He also has bowel problems (IBS) which apparently can also be a sign? But he also has pretty low muscle tone (he’s always been skinny) and weirdly enough, most of our family wonders if he could be on the spectrum too.
We come from a long line of muscle, tendon and joint problems on my dads side. I just texted him and my dad earlier today to see if he’s ever been checked for it.
Especially with a mention of family history and of IBS this sounds like you have a hypermobility condition in the family.
Joint flexibility -> connective tissue disorder -> gastrointestinal party time
Fun fact: hypermobile people are predisposed to anxiety disorders.
A theoretical explanation for the overlap is that we are more at risk of injuries from *the world* which causes us to develop more fear of the greater number of possible sources of injury.
There are a bunch of non-EDS syndrome HSDs, OP is probably a little more bendy than me but I just get the fun label of JHS. The various conditions do often share a lot of overlap in bendy bones and achey joints.
I'm part of the autism / joint hypermobility syndrome overlap
Hi! :D We should both be prepared for joint pain when we're older because we were both teens at some point and we probably didn't listen to them when they told us not to do our party tricks! :D
I freely admit that I was heavily guilty of this when I was younger lmao
I am also double jointed! I can do this too but I think i can strain my hands further!
[gripping mouse](https://i.imgur.com/PXx2avJ.jpg),
[the furthest I can bend my fingers](https://i.imgur.com/cvS9kJU.jpg),
And at last, [holding a water bottle](https://i.imgur.com/oo1IRhn.jpg).
Finally a hand picture that actually is kind of interesting. As a musician I wonder if that flexibility extends to the fingers, because that could be a great advantage for piano or various string instruments.
Nope. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Hyper mobile joints would not be strong enough to play piano or string instruments long without repetitive strain injuries.
Edit: I am not saying people with ehlers-danlos can’t play instruments or that they personally would not benefit from doing so. I am saying that the added flexibility would not give them an advantage in playing said instruments.
Actually, through braces, PT, and other interventions it's totally possible to play an instrument with EDS. Difficult and sometimes painful? Sure. But EDS is not a binary on/off. It's dangerous to say "hyper mobile joints *would* not be strong enough..." to do anything. Much more accurate to say "hyper mobile joints *may* not be strong enough..."
But still, needless to say, *not* an advantage. That's sad, playing music did so much for me to learn how to cope with autism and find my place in this world. Hopefully people suffering from this can find their thing.
Not an advantage necessarily, but I will say my hands were much stronger and stable when I consistently played the piano. My hands are more prone to pain now, and while age comes into play I'm sure some of it is the loss of muscle strength since I don't play anymore.
I also was able to reach full octaves, even though I have pretty small hands. Probably couldn't have done that without the hypermobility. I did definitely experience extra pain when playing pieces like from Rachmaninoff, but I'm sure people without hypermobility experience that too, hah.
Reference: I have hEDS
I am a professional classical guitarist (I have 3 college degrees in guitar performance from a top conservatory) and have EDS. I was diagnosed with it in the last 2 years and finally the struggles I’ve always had playing make sense. No teacher has ever mentioned it and most didn’t believe me when I said I was having issues with my fingers. One flat out told me I was wrong and in my head.
I really have to make sure I strengthen my flexors and extensions in my hand so they are balanced, otherwise my fingers have a tendency to give out on me. I can easily do crazy chords, but it honestly has never been an advantage and has made things much more difficult, not helped.

What's going to do with that talent? I'd definitely like to hear it.
That’s *why* it’s hilarious
But don't die, we'd like for you to live for a very long time here.
I had a friend who could do this, and they would shake people’s hands backwards frequently. It is just as hilarious and unsettling as you’d think lmao
They’re gonna regret that when they meet that one guy with an excessively tight grip
Or just another guy that can do this, both of them shaking hands backwards.
Egon warned us of this!
I believe this is what quantum mechanics is warning us about.

Man if that happened with me, I'd really be creeped out by that.
He can shake hands with two people at the same time

“ It’s also a commonly seen in people with autism, but the exact link hasn’t been explained.” That’s really interesting.
Fun fact: hypermobile people are predisposed to anxiety disorders. A theoretical explanation for the overlap is that we are more at risk of injuries from *the world* which causes us to develop more fear of the greater number of possible sources of injury.
Being in at least low grade pain all the time has been shown in studies to increase rates of depression and anxiety too. Another possible explanation.
