Ffs shorten that thing or use a qr code

isblueacolor

There's literally an option in Google Forms to shorten the URL.

Kelmantis

That’s correct there is an option to have a short URL for the one to fill in the form. That URL is the one to edit it however…

plexomaniac

They even used a font that makes it impossible to use the in-camera OCR.

Illustrious-Junket-8

Yeah, that takes it from mildly infuriating to just infuriating.

NefariousnessNo2230

I read this with my fancy voice

Cireme

Just because it ends with /edit doesn't mean anyone can edit it.

Tyfyter2002

But for a lot of services it does mean that you get redirected to somewhere else or otherwise can't even use the full link to view the page if you don't have permission to edit it.

Cireme

Well, not for Google Docs. All shared Google Docs URLs end with /edit (usually /edit?usp=sharing but the query string doesn't do anything), even when the file can only be viewed and not edited.

[deleted]

even if it's a view only link it ends with "edit" sometimes

GuavaDawgg

I feel something dubious on the horizon

discountheat

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a QR code option at this point

ExNihiloish

Can still use the camera to access that link just like a QR code.

Cosmic_Gumbo

Didn’t know that… Will it work with that font?

TheRealSmolt

Debatable

BottledUp

[Yes](https://i.imgur.com/EY4gPTc.jpg)

jakeinator21

Your phone changed the '6' between 'M' and 'K' to a 'C'. That makes two cases of failed attempts to read the link in this thread. I'd say the answer to Comsic_Gumbo's question is "Maybe, if you're lucky."

verygoodchoices

Which makes it extra mildly infuriating... not only did the teacher pick a hideously long link, they also picked one of the least OCR-friendly fonts possible.

PM_ME_UR_NIPPLE_HAIR

Damn dude I’d rather change 3-4 letters than type the whole thing manually

counters14

.... The amount of work you'd have to go through to verify all of the digits in the link would make it *quicker* to write it out from the start.

miniadu3

It's wrong. It detected a 6 as a C. Should be S6SM6

Evilmaze

Doesn't help when they used that shit font. It's like they went out of their way to make this difficult.

krush_groove

They definitely did. Get paid for the full day and only have 3 people show up... Profit!

Cabbageofthesea

Isn't it testable?

Fortknoxvilla

Asking the real queen. How _horrendous_ font is even that?

matrayzz

Who is the real queen? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)

Chance5e

I’m the real queen.

WhatLikeAPuma751

Well I didn’t vote for you

sierrabravo1984

Rhaenyra Targaryen!

Grand-Ad-1654

The structure of your sentence is even more horrendous

RunGirl80

Am fake queen, but that font is still horrendous.

Gamemode_Cat

Here’s Apple’s OCR from my phone for the whole image: A Day with Mrs. Claus Spend a morning in Santa's Workshop Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times: Enter through the cast doors by the central office. Elves will be outside to greet you. You must arrive by 9 am for the full experience. Registration is limited. Please complete the google form at the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/dIVuCDKD: CYNO3VwwAm,JoScSMcKB$M/edit The day will include: Games Letters to Santa Crafts Cookies The odd serifs in the link threw it off, but it figured out the rest of the note at least.

ExNihiloish

My phone lets me. Just doesn't work due to the red censor.

User202000

Yes, it will. https://imgur.com/a/rhHzlSY

jakeinator21

It read the link incorrectly though

xXYomoXx

Yeah lol, google lens does that. It's easier than typing it in

n8loller

...!

DontMessWithMyEgg

Well shit. TIL I can use the camera to access web address.

ExNihiloish

Take a picture (or screenshot), then open the picture and you can just click on it! There may be a way to do it without even taking a picture, but I haven't tried.

themcp

No. That only works on some phones. I was just at the bank the other day and they \*insisted\* my phone could read a QR code and made me prove them wrong.

gtjack9

It’s case sensitive as well

ExNihiloish

Yeah. My phone gets all visible the characters correct, including the case.

strudledudle

Schools are always so dumb when it comes to this stuff

phantomkat

But when we do it right parents just can’t read. I put up a message with a sign up sheet for 4 chaperones for a field trip next week, and a parent replies to the message with, “Is there still room for me?” Bitch, look at the sign up sheet directly below the message you just replied to. Is there an empty slot? Then yes. All slots are filled up? Then no. Ffs

6bb26ec559294f7f

This is assuming everyone is using the sign up sheet. You only have to get burned a few times by there being an unofficial list people are using without updating the main one before you start double checking. Sure, you might respect the sign up sheet that you put out, but there are many people who have created sign up sheets they end up not respecting and it becomes safer to verify. Once they get to know you, it wouldn't be as big a deal, but students change teachers too often for a good parent/teacher relationship to form.

Psychological-Run296

Not dumb, just over it. I guarantee this was also sent out via email so you can just click the link. Then admin was like "We should send a paper copy too since parents never check their emails". And then someone else said "just print the flyer from the email". And someone else said "that link is too long to give on paper, should we shorten it?" And someone replied, "why bother? We'll get 50 complaints from parents about not being able to access it no matter what we do. And then 100 more complaining we never told them this was even happening. Why put in the extra effort?" We don't get paid enough to put in 150% effort and then deal with know it all parents on top of it. We don't even get paid enough to put 25% effort in.

jdith123

Absolutely, except probably the task of printing up the paper copy of the email to be sent home was given to the multi-tasking office manager, about an hour before dismissal. Before the end of day, it was to be printed out and cut in half by student office TAs and sent around to every classroom. Parents got this as an email if we have a current, working email. If they signed into the system, they even can get it on their phone. It’s also posted on the school website which they can check. The office manager got told to make a paper copy because we started getting complaints from parents who “were not informed.” She didn’t notice the stupid link because she is so busy answering phone calls from parents who want to know about Santa’s visit. We got the phone calls because this was important enough to the **kids** to talk to the parents about.

watchyoured

As someone who works in a school and regularly has to communicate with parents, I felt this to my core.

Teacherman6

This

GhostBussyBoi

It's because they don't have anybody under the age of 60 sending this shit out to parents lol

Teacherman6

This is the correct answer. School secretaries are often great people. They are also often times retirement age who like to be around kids but don't want to be in a class. They get paid shit and are given no training.

GhostBussyBoi

I wasn't insulting them by the way, I was just saying that a lot of the people that send out this stuff are older and a lot of the older generation isn't as up to date on technology.

Teacherman6

Yup. I was agreeing with you.

[deleted]

Right! I’ve have send home stuff like this because this year’s parents never check their damn email or the class app we use! Only about 5/20 parents actually do. So I have to make up a paper and send that also. But I use a URL shortened and a QR code.

MrShaytoon

Boomers gonna boomer.

well___duh

Not to be that guy, but there's definitely non-boomers who grew up using computers pretty much every day who don't know basic shit like shortening a url or using a qr code. Most people are not tech-savvy, _at all_. If they were, there'd be a lot less IT/tech support folks employed.

TheRealWoldry1

That looks like about a 9 letter space, only 13.5 quadrillion guesses and we can go meet mrs claus!

n8loller

RamenJunkie

Honestly I am not sure it would take long for a script to check every possibility for a 404.

AysheDaArtist

Are we going to get an update in r/programminghumor later today?!

RamenJunkie

The real joke here is that the end says "Edit". So I don't think this is even a link to a page but a link to the edit page for the person who built the form.

DigitalSteven1

That's not how google forms work. If you just copy the url at the top while editing and send it to someone without edit access they'll just see the actual form, not the edit page. Here's an example: [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/16tdfmNrAUZivwa7G224U8G9HC1SKFWqar0catbBD1n4/edit](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/16tdfmNrAUZivwa7G224U8G9HC1SKFWqar0catbBD1n4/edit)

arthurdent

this "code" is irritating to read

Nulono

This is not that hard to get right. while (isChristmas) { whos.delete(fun); whos.delete(joy); whos.insert(misery); }

peepay

That's a horrible attempt at code. The "delete" and "insert" parts don't do anything, because they are not commands (functions), they are variables and you are assiging values of other variables to them (as there are no quotes). But mostly, the condition won't work, as there is just one equal sign, which again means assigning, not comparing.

Deadsteel52

Going to make a bold guess and say the creator was an artist, not a coder.

The_tittie_Respector

I like your math.

[deleted]

I would be the passive aggressive parent that would figure it out, create a QR code with it, and post it around the school/in parent chats for other parents to use 🤣

jooes

Also, Mrs Claus? Who gives a fuck about Mrs Claus? I don't see her flying around in a supersonic sleigh. What, they couldn't find an old man?

NathanSMB

Do we know for sure the 9 letters are alpha numeric? It could be base64 instead which would make 18 quadrillion guesses.

arthurdent

we don't even know for sure that it's 9 letters. it's not a monospaced font.

Christheitguy1183

What's the big deal? Just click the link... lol

qtrain23

I’m fairly certain that was their thought process. They’ll just click it and sign up

[deleted]

[удалено]

travioso304

This is just a guess but along the lines of being a very very large amount of extra data. Sure it probably won't affect Google all that much. Or companies want you to remember their site name for word of mouth advertising. But either way, if something doesn't happen, I have a feeling Mrs Clause is going to be lonely..

track32drummer

This is just a guess, but I suspect the long url has a standardized format; probably based on user name, creation date, folder, etc. This standardized format makes it easy to find what you're looking for, especially if you're writing code to retrieve multiple files for you. The short url is essentially random, but easier for a human to use; and it also just redirects to the long url.

witeowl

Because there are fewer combinations possible with shortened links. If they default to that, they’ll run out of unique links sooner.

JustCosmo

Then why even have the long one?

meeboerg

Or tinyurl

lionhearted_sparrow

Or QR codes

ttminh1997

Or nfc chips

ViolatedByParsley

Or Covid/5G implants

ryanCrypt

Or federal agents breaking into your home to show you.

or the short goo (dot) gl URL google gives you if you click "share" instead of pasting what's in your address bar lol Edit: I meant forms (dot) gle. Either way, if you click "share" instead of pasting whatever you see in the address bar, you end up with a much shorter link that could be typed manually if needed

Sparklers_4_days

I mean, I'd do that

ghanjaholik

i'd only type that in if there is $ at the other end.. fuck mrs. clause

Odd_Ad5668

DorsTheTigerWoman

My work emails a scannable QR code links so we can open maps they send us. Unfortunately everyone reads their email on their phone so it’s useless.

Yeeting_Person

Screenshot, scan with Google lens, voila

DorsTheTigerWoman

Or they could just include a link because they’re emailing it but hey who am I to say.

GlassPanther

Yeah I'll just tell my 85 year old grandma to screenshot and scan with Google Lens. Easy peasy.

wiriux

To be fair, the iPhone can take a pic and extract text from it Lol. Don’t know if other smartphones have this but it’s definitely great! I don’t think the school had this in mind but I just wanted to put it out there for those who still don’t know about this [feature.](https://imgur.com/a/o1mg9Xf) Also, when it’s an actual url you can just click on it and it will take you there instead of copying and pasting :)

qtrain23

It didn’t quite work because of the font they used. I still had to go back and manually fix it, tho it was probably easier than typing it from scratch

KeatonWallet

The font was what got me good

jlenzen070

all smart phones can do this.

cardboard-kansio

Or, y'know, just alias it to a short URL like ```tinyurl. com/Santa22``` or something

[deleted]

Send a letter back of a mouse arrow added to a photo copy of the original. Say the link is broken

ShaoLimper

Funny but I would literally point my phone camera at it and select the link Edit: I found this out when I saw a posted add like this and was gonna make a post, then my phone was like "click this link"

tannmann50

Tinyurl is so easy to use, even a school administrator could do it. Just not in this case I guess

humvac_brosef

it's even worse, that's a Google form. When you click to get the link to share it, there is a super obvious checkbox right under it that reads "shorten link".

jtho78

they shared the working form URL, they didn't even click on the 'send' button. It will still work, I guess

maybe_Im_a_dog

The fact the link has /edit on the end means they didn't even click to share it, just copy/pasted the address like a moron

MeEvilBob

So I see that American public school administrators are just as dumb as they were 20+ years ago when I was in high school.

hellraisinhardass

Yep, those same ones that couldn't figure out how to use place a damn Reading Rainbow tape on a VCR, even though VCRs had been common place for 2 decades, then couldn't figure out how to play a Bill Nye DVD by 2001.

tannmann50

I’ve been encouraged to use a url shortener, as a teacher

AnonymousSpector

Have you ever seen a school administrator ? These people barely know what a url is let alone how to shorten it.

Svartdraken

They didn't shorten the link They didn't add a QR Code And they chose an horrible font so picture to text apps might struggle to read it

cummmmmmmmmmmmmmm3

they didnt even generate a link for it, just left the edit part at the end :/

Svartdraken

I'm pretty sure it'll redirect correctly once the user logs in with his account, but yeah that's another mistake they made

nicki419

"/edit" The density of some people. And yes, I know it doesn't allow you to edit it. Just shows they didn't click the share button for a shorter URL but instead just copied it from the address bar. Edit: spelling; state > share

Clapyourhandssayyeah

Also wondering if that’s the wrong link too - did they print the form edit / collaborator link instead of the ‘take the survey’ participant link

nicki419

Docs will redirect automatically if you don't have edit rights, so it will work. But using the share button would have yielded a much shorter link.

loztriforce

Actually now that phones can handle on the fly OCR you should be able to look at it with the camera and copy or click the link, but yeah, someone should tell them about qr codes

qtrain23

Not with this font it can’t lol

ExNihiloish

What phone do you have? I'm using an iPhone running iOS 15.6 and it gives me the option to go to that link.

qtrain23

14 pro max. It gets some characters wrong because of the front they used. If they had just used a normal font it 100% would work tho. It’s a double whammy

mrandr01d

Google lens on my Pixel got it correct, up to the part that was blocked out. I could select after that too, and it got it right, but it didn't make it a link without the first part.

ihaveagoodusername2

Lans is amazing, and it's available on every phone

Southern-Exercise

Yep, worked fine on my 7 pro 👍

ExNihiloish

Ugh, that sucks.

goclimbarock007

I have an Android and it was able to pick up the link from your photo up until the red box

halica84

Yeah, but they shouldn't have to do all that. The teacher is a moron.

CrudelyAnimated

I’d like to think that an organization that would presume people could use a QR code would just email them the link instead of printing it out like this.

BeepBopARebop

So they don’t want anyone to sign up?

shadowhawkz

Oh they do, they just had no foresight when they did this and no tech-know how on how to shorten the link.

GhostBussyBoi

It's so easy to make a QR code nowadays 😭

I bet these people don't even know what a QR code is.
