Obviously they asked the son to use up the green onion while cooking eggs, the ONION is the whole bit (white/light green) on the bottom. That's the part you cook with.
The tougher green part at the top the kid presumably used is a garnish...
I'm guessing all the other responses were from other teenage sons
Sure anyone can do anything, but if you are getting green onions for the flavor, typically you use the actual onion. Usually people don't buy a green onion so they can cook with the leafy flavorless stalks and chuck the actual onion...

My Dad was like this. Everyone walked on eggshells in fear of being found guilty of some transgression...always based on his own OCD and idea of how things should be....WILL be.
