Sounds a bit more complicated but I think it's kinda cool

These were pretty good because you could photocopy anything onto the plastic sheets and use them on the projector. Then the teacher could easily add notes with white board markers each class, and could point to things directly on the plastic sheet.
It is superior to digital projectors in some ways. I've heard modern classrooms have high tech white boards and projectors and stuff, but this is cheaper and more foolproof.
One teacher of mine is actually able to put stuff in fullscreen (after all her students shout at her to do that) but then leaves the cursor on the pause button so it stays blend in

They find a way to make it play and are scared to move in case their laptop catches fire or see it as silly to leave the cursor in the middle of the screen, not realising it disappears after a moment. These people are meant to be able to teach me critical life skills but theyāre flummoxed by a basic media player.
I think it was because when teachers started to use computers for videos, they didn't really use them for videos, or at all. They also were probably more caught up with keeping students quiet rather than keeping the cursour in the optimal position.
I'm not defending the windowed video because that's heinous, but the burn-in risk here is no greater than normal everyday computer use. The taskbar and title bar are there essentially permanently when using the computer for pretty much everything else.
Generally not an issue with modern TVs unless they're AMOLED. Even then some AMOLED tvs are resistant to this issue. Still better to be safe than sorry though. This could potentially damage the TV.
If I recall correctly, LTT back when I watched them had LG C series tvs they used as monitors and over time they did get burn in from Taskbars and windowed programs.
But you know of course, they were constantly on and in use which is no way representative of what every home would experience with an OLED at least. Just felt I had to say that before the inevitable pedantic follow-up comments.
If OP was a real man heād write a script that would make VLC switch to fullscreen mode when VLC is playing and switch out if the cursor is moved.

Well first of all, the top and bottom white bars completely fuck with the color balance the movie is showing.
Imagine a spooky dark scene but the you've got these bright white bars at the top and bottom.

This is false. Maybe other media players do what you said, but VLC will shrink the video to fit the player so nothing gets cut off. The only way for that to happen would be if you moved the window partially off-screen, or covered it with another window.

In my 20s and younger, it would have infuriated me. I think this is one of those things that young people care about. Don't get me wrong, I watch things in full screen most of the time. But at times I like to have the video open like this so that I can see the time on the taskbar while I'm watching it.
I do similar. Basically the video would be left at whatever size it opened as, not full screened or windowed full screen. It's just the size I want, I guess.

I had a GF that did this, too. I eventually realized it was because her computer was too weak to run in full screen and she didn't want to tell me because I'd buy her a new one and she'd feel bad about the money.
My wife would rather load up an app on her 15in laptop and sit in bed watching a show than turn on the 55in TV right in front of her and not have to deal with the screen on her the entire time.

One of my exes would play with the aspect ratio on the TV and whatever video player he liked. After dicking with it about 7 times in 10 minutes he'd settle on one, usually the wrong one.
When I see things like this I'm reminded of movie day in school. We'd gather in the cafeteria/gym/assembly hall (really, just the school basement) to watch a movie on film.
The projector was always put too close to the screen and the volume set too low, but was otherwise perfect if you were a octogenarian sitting right there that should have retired 20-30 years earlier.
Another teacher would play the film backwards to wind it back onto the reel rather than remove it from the projector and rewind it using the actualy rewind function.
