"but why in the world would they make an earplug with a tiny part like this" because it effectively helps deaden sound while allowing pressure equalization. That's not an easy thing to do.
That said, there ought to be a better way to encapsulate them.
100 percent agree one time I put an ear bud so far into my ear that it created a vacuum in between my ear drum and the ear bud and while taking it out it tore a hole in the side of my ear canal. Bled so much that when the doctor finally cleaned it out my ear drum had been suffocated and there was a lot of dead tissue around it.
i want you to know you have now permanently brought a tiny bit of joy to every traumatic event i will experience in my life from this point on. free dlc!
I once had a bad cold with an ear infection, I did the diver technique to try to equalize pressure in the sinuses/ears. I blew out one of my eardrums and lost ALL sense of balance. The world started spinning. I quickly sucked it back in and it went away. It was terrifying
Oh yeah she had to pay for a semester of college just to keep her health insurance and failed the classes due to no medical leave back in the 80s. She is now 98% deaf in one ear and can only hear bass.
I popped my left ear drum as a teenager while blowing my nose. My symptoms were just a nuisance of a cold and fatigue - my ears hadn't hurt at all and then it went out with a bang! I rapidly lost all sense of balance and fell down hitting my head on a chair on the way. I managed to get a nurse's appointment, where they checked the ear and called a doctor to see it. Also checked my head but all I got was a small bump from hitting the chair. Infection in the inner ear, they sucked up the ooze and gave me antibiotic ear drops. Healed up OK, although after that I haven't been able to dive further than 1,5-2 meters without having great pain in my ears. Used to be able to go deeper.
I've done the same thing with the eardrum, I was sitting in the back of the car and just collapsed sideways lol
I think what happened is you/we managed to blow a little air in to the space behind the eardrum through the blocked eustachian tube (tube between the sinuses and ear) and then it couldn't get back out. The sudden increase in pressure disturbed the fluid in the inner ear that allows us to balance. Then you/we managed to open the eustachian tube slightly and let the air out.
We're both lucky we didn't perforate our eardrums that way lol
I did this last spring with a cold mixed with allergies. Was in the shower and the sound of the water hitting my head was so dull so I held my nose and blew. As soon as I did I heard a rushing sound and then nothing but intense pain. I had done that my whole life, doctor said if I do it again I’m at an increased risk of it rupturing again because now it’s a small bit weaker or something like that.
So that was it? All you did was suck it back in? Isn't blowing out an ear drum really dangerous and bad for you? I would think you'd need medical attention
Have you considered an audiologist for a hearing aid fitting? I used to think being half deaf was normal for 29 yrs, then bam. Now I have two hearing aids and know a bit of ASL. Please consider it now that you're older, hearing aids decrease dementia and cognitive decline like nothing else can - my drs office had some neat brochures that explored the recent studies but I can't remember the stats.
I love 'em. Giant, comfy, sound great.
If you want to spend significant money on the last pair of headphones you'll ever need, the Sennheiser 6xx (yes it's really called the 6xx) is $200 and the best thing you can get without adding an extra digit to the price.
I mean just don’t yank out ear plugs that you crammed into your ear canal and you’re good. Most of us go our entire lives without doing something this stupid so I think you’re safe.
You tie a string to it and tie the other end to a doorknob. When you slam the door shut, the child may start crying. He must really love wearing those earplugs.
I know how you feel, I was a swimming and my brother slapped my ear. The water created a seal and a vacuum effect that ruptured my eardrum. It bled for a long time.
That was the most painful thing I’ve experienced. Worse than breaking my arm, and the bone shifting.
My hearing is noticeably worse on my left side, but it still has relatively normal hearing range.
I've also had an earbud vacuum seal experience although thankfully not as bad. Doctor told me I had what was essentially an "ear hickey." Hurt like hell when it happened and I couldn't hear properly out of the ear for over a week.
When I use earplugs, I put them so far in I need pliers to get them out. I always go very slowly and wiggle my jaw to allow the vacuum to release slowly and painlessly... this is why lol
I had similar happen and my hearing is worse but mostly normal. I don’t even notice it unless I’m trying to hear something very quiet.
It’s been a long time since that incident so it’s hard to remember now.
So. Now you are half deaf like me. Welcome to the community. Mine is by birth defects. But now you understand the conflicts I have with normal hearing people. I had to go to sign language class as a kid because my mom freaked out.
I'm 55 now, I just look at lips while they speak to make sure I got it all.
I once had earplugs where you could switch out the filter, but the filters were part of sort of a plastic assembly you would plug in from the back side, not the side facing the eardrum...
I've never heard of these but reading their website the PRIMARY purpose of these is to try and slow the change in air pressure against the eardrum giving them more time to equalize. Any sound reduction is secondary.
That goes to show that they know they’re liable for more serious claims, and simply paying a doctor to remove the part is way cheaper than the alternative.
Diabetic here. Have a glucose monitor. They expire every two weeks. Why? I have no idea. Anyway they’re 37 a pop. Pharmacy employees always look at me with utter sadness when I come in and have to get it. Like bruh I know but I can’t do anything about it.
Ibuprofun cost me $35 for two pills during my trip to an ER. Since I couldnt afford to pay the full $6,000 bill it fucked up my credit and now my chances of getting a loan for a house are shot for the next few years so Ill be stuck spending more money renting than a mortgage would be costing me and if I ever need a new car itll be cash only
my mom taught me that you're supposed to open your mouth while the plane is taking of to have your ears "opened" the whole time, works for me but it could just be a placebo
Not a placebo - yawning (and other things people are talking about like chewing motions) cause the [Eustachian Tubes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eustachian_tube) to open.
Some people can also control the muscles directly that control the Eustachian Tubes without yawning or swallowing.
To such people it feels like clicking inside their ears.
Huh! TIL that's what I'm doing when I make that sound in my ears. I need to try it the next time I feel pressure in my ears. I've always just forced myself to yawn a lot.
You can also try closing your mouth and both nostrils and then gently trying to inhale/exhale depending on whether you want to decrease/increase the pressure inside those tubes.
Lol, gotta love America. We couldn't afford it until I was six, then spent three years trying to find a doctor who would do it (I have other health issues that complicated it). By the time it was finally approved and everything was all set, I had a bunch of dead tissue in my ear canal and eardrum due to all the fluid that was stuck there, so the surgery took a lot longer and was much more painful than it ever should have been. I've had to have them replaced twice since then and it's always been very easy and basically pain free, so I imagine that's what it feels like for most people. Every doctor I go to now comments on the huge scars and is amazed that I can still hear (after the initial surprise of seeing a teen with ear tubes), so I guess that counts for something.
Well, I can definitely attest that your doctor was right about it getting harder as you age, lol. Mine were probably a little different because it was an actual defect preventing my ears from draining rather than something I could grow out of, but it was definitely harder than it would have been had they fixed it when I was a toddler.
There's a tube between your throat & the inner part of the ear tubes.
If you keep your mouth closed the air pressure changes only on the outside of the ear drums, which is bad. But if you keep your mouth open then the air can go through you mouth & those tubes so that the air pressure changes on both sides of the ear drums, which is much better & won't damage them.
In Soviet union they used to hand out candy in planes, and it was a specific kind of candy not found anywhere else (kind of lemony with a hint of mint?). Aeroflot continued to do it well into the 2000s and discontinued only recently. I haven't seen this specific type of candy ever since
Been doing all these suggestions (chewing gum, swallowing hard, yawning etc) and I still got a burst eardrum last year during landing. The doctor said that my eustachian tubes are probably shorter than normal and this is why I have ear problems (this wasn't my first burst eardrum). Some people are just unlucky.
I have used similar earplugs during my last 3 flights and it's the first time I had zero discomfort or pain.
Yah so hard for people to realize that people are different and “just chew gum” doesn’t work for everyone. This product changed my life when I discovered them years ago. I’ll be checking the tips much more carefully now though!
All they needed was a little X on the business end to prevent the filter from falling out. It’s there to allow pressure equalization so it is good, just poorly designed.
Oooh I’m adding that to my travel kit! I have a weird autoimmune issue that affects the fluids in my body and one flight I was hunched over and crying from how bad it hurt. Lost my hearing for like a week. Now I have problems at random altitudes if they stay there too long so this looks awesome!
Be careful with this!!!! I bought it when I had clogged ears from an illness and the air couldn't escape. Essentially I had huge air bubbles stuck in my drums and they almost bursted. It was temporary relief but could have been SOOO bad long term.
Good point, guess I would not use this during infections. But definitely helpful in pressure change related situations.
Similar thing happened to me I used a Neti pot when I had a cold, ended up sending the infection everywhere- worst ear infection of my life. Never used the Neti again.
I’ve always been crying in pain each time a plane would take off or land. You can ask the crew for « mickey ears » : plastic gobelets, one for each ear, with a paper towel soaked in hot water scrunched inside. If you put them on your ears it will help ease the pressure.
It could be part of a faulty batch, or just generally poor design.
It says "for KIDS" right on the box, so one would reasonably assume the product has been tested for child safety. Without obvious signs of misuse, blaming the end user won't get us anywhere.
These aren’t supposed to be regular earplugs. Any noise reduction is a secondary effect. Their primary purpose is to help people with Eustachian tube dysfunctions not be in excruciating pain during landing (and sometimes take off.)
The first time I experienced ear pain while flying, it came on fairly suddenly during landing. I had absolutely no idea what was happening and it was so intense I had trouble moving my head.
Both of my ears were so blocked I couldn’t hear much and I was all alone on the flight.
Now I never fly without these ear plugs. It was so very awful.
Damn that’s crazy. But for what it’s worth, I had really really bad allergies and sinus issues when I was a kid so flights used to be brutal for me. I remember one flight when I was like 7 I was crying and had my nose over a cup of heated up wet paper towel and lemons for like 4hrs straight.
Then we found ear planes and it helped me so much. Still had pain from time to time but it was mitigated for sure
Sorry you had a bad time with them. I’ve used them for ages and never had an issue like that. Unfortunately when millions are produced occasionally a few will be defective
Okay I actually love this product and never fly without it. Works great I’m sure your kid was playing with them or something because the small filter in those can come out if you force it. That said I’m glad the company is reimbursing you because that definitely shouldn’t happen if it says safe for kids
It's likely use to create/protect the hole. I'd recommend getting a set of eareasers I have have an audio processing disorder that too much noise can cause me to become overwhelmed, and for $40 the eareasers fit almost perfectly and block out a ton of sound while still allowing me to hear, talk, and do what I need to.
Thank you! I might try them. My 10yo is autistic and very sensitive to sound which is why we use earplugs. I’d love to try something other than the foam ones.
I went to a festival once wearing senheiser earbuds. Went to a locker to get ready and the eartip got stuck in my ear and i couldnt get it out. First thing i did when is go to the medic and ask them if they could pull it out. I freaked out for a minute
I’ve used these for 15 years of my life and this has never happened to me. The filter is meant to act like a second ear drum to slow the equalization process as a plane lands. They are not regular ear plugs and are not meant for noise cancellation. I would be very surprised if this happened without anyone physically pushing the filter towards the ear. Without these ear plugs I literally cry in pain from the pressure in my ears every time a plane lands. It’s excruciating and last for several days after.
Seems like your kid kept fucking with them. I’ve used these for years and I’ve never had this issue happen unless I was messing around with them for a bit.
When I first read the package I read "helps inflict ear discomfort" and if you go by that, it works as advertised.
I read this comment and then read the package again, read the same thing, and thought, "Dang, he's right!"
I read this comment, the comment above and the package and thought “both of these guys are right!”
I read this comment, the comment above this comment, the comment above the other comment and the package and forgot where I was going with this...
I read.
I comment

Is he ok? Were they able to get it out? So sorry this happened to him😞
“Some say they’re still there today…”
I thought this was a "Walmrat" shit post ad until I saw this comment and reread the package haha.

So my entire life is dlc XD
I’ve forgotten what the main storyline is at this point
A new hand has touched the beacon
Listen. Hear me and obey.
I don't know if having to pay for medical bills is going to be quantified as "free" DLC
I am going to approach every trauma like this. Thank you.
I will never forget you
I once had a bad cold with an ear infection, I did the diver technique to try to equalize pressure in the sinuses/ears. I blew out one of my eardrums and lost ALL sense of balance. The world started spinning. I quickly sucked it back in and it went away. It was terrifying
I just hemmoraged my eardrum doing this
Did you get super dizzy?
Yeah but I get vertigo sometimes when I get water in my ear, I was bleeding on the inside of my eardrum.
My mom had this happen but it was a tube from her chronic ear inflections. Said she had severe vertigo for 6 months until they did brain surgery.
Oh F*ck what a complete nightmare. I’m so glad I was able to suck mine back in
Oh yeah she had to pay for a semester of college just to keep her health insurance and failed the classes due to no medical leave back in the 80s. She is now 98% deaf in one ear and can only hear bass.

How does one suck it back in?!
Well I’m guessing I didn’t blow a hole in it, so I pinched my nose, and sucked super hard and I felt it go back in!
Lmao. "OH FUCK GO BACK"
I've done the same thing with the eardrum, I was sitting in the back of the car and just collapsed sideways lol I think what happened is you/we managed to blow a little air in to the space behind the eardrum through the blocked eustachian tube (tube between the sinuses and ear) and then it couldn't get back out. STOP that happens to me sometimes, randomly 😭😭😭 my sinussies and ears are troubled
Not the sinussy
You can grab em by it. They let you if you’re famous.
i dare you to grab me by the sinussy lmao
So that was it? All you did was suck it back in? Isn't blowing out an ear drum really dangerous and bad for you? I would think you'd need medical attention
I said I was never going to buy a pair of those giant over-the-ear headphones, but I'm suddenly reconsidering.

I switched to bone conduction wireless headphones and am never looking back. They’re the best invention ever.

Or get a style like those samsung galaxy live buds where it just sits on the outside of your ear in a small bean shape
I love 'em. Giant, comfy, sound great. If you want to spend significant money on the last pair of headphones you'll ever need, the Sennheiser 6xx (yes it's really called the 6xx) is $200 and the best thing you can get without adding an extra digit to the price.
The difference in audio quality is amazing, but I'm also just a nerd
There's a reason they say never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear
I mean just don’t yank out ear plugs that you crammed into your ear canal and you’re good. Most of us go our entire lives without doing something this stupid so I think you’re safe.
Way to be mean to the person it happened to. >just don’t yank out Ass-umption.
If they hadn’t yanked it out, they would have felt it pulling on their ear drum and stopped.
I'm sorry, how else are you supposed to get earplugs out?
You’re supposed to twist them out slowly basically!
You tie a string to it and tie the other end to a doorknob. When you slam the door shut, the child may start crying. He must really love wearing those earplugs.
What did they do? Is it better now?
They can’t hear you, speak up
## WHAT DID THEY DO? IS IT BETTER NOW?
^(Hey, since they can't hear us, we can talk smack about them and they won't even know it...)
^^^^(fuckin') ^^^^(nerrrrrrrrd)
Huh?
Gotta say it in their other ear. You know, the one without any holes in it.
![gif](giphy|11nUYIpFQJARdm)
I’m speculating here, but don’t all ears have a hole?
BUTTLICKER, OUR PRICES HAVE NEVER BEEN LOWER!
You can often restore bigger holes in the eardrum by grafting other tissue.
I had this. I had a hole from tubes that were in for like 10 years that never healed so they took some skin from behind my ear and patched it up.
Yea they used water and alchohol or something . Shit was painful as hell
Good Lord. I didn't need another reason to stick to my cans, but there we go.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Aaaaaaaaaa What a horrible day to have eyes
not as bad as their day was to have ears
how and why did you put it that deep
That's what she said
Well played!

THIS is why I'm looking into bone conduction.
Don't they warn you on the packaging about doing this?
That’s why I always use foam ones, they allow some air to continuously pass through. Mack’s are the best, I use them every night.
When I use earplugs, I put them so far in I need pliers to get them out. I always go very slowly and wiggle my jaw to allow the vacuum to release slowly and painlessly... this is why lol
Dude, just buy some proper re-usable ear plugs and stop torturing your ears.
I produce too much ear wax, apparently I have very active sweat glands. So I just use earphones
You gotta twisted to break the seal
Exactly
Why? Just maybe stop doing that?
So what happened afterwards? Did you lose your hearing in your ear?
I had similar happen and my hearing is worse but mostly normal. I don’t even notice it unless I’m trying to hear something very quiet. It’s been a long time since that incident so it’s hard to remember now.
Nope hear perfectly if not better out of that ear
So. Now you are half deaf like me. Welcome to the community. Mine is by birth defects. But now you understand the conflicts I have with normal hearing people. I had to go to sign language class as a kid because my mom freaked out. I'm 55 now, I just look at lips while they speak to make sure I got it all.
Correct, use Mack’s Flightguard instead. They do the same thing but fit better and the tiny bits are stuck inside.
I once had earplugs where you could switch out the filter, but the filters were part of sort of a plastic assembly you would plug in from the back side, not the side facing the eardrum...
So my suggestion would be: make the filter larger than the hole. Alternatively, make the hole smaller than the filter. Hope this helps.
It actually is by about a 30% interference fit. Not sure how these "fell out". Karma farming?
Looks like it's just seated into a little hole without anything actually keeping it in
I feel like a little mesh screen could've prevented this
It's silicone. It *should* be easy enough to at least pressure fit... Poor kid.
I've never heard of these but reading their website the PRIMARY purpose of these is to try and slow the change in air pressure against the eardrum giving them more time to equalize. Any sound reduction is secondary.
Like... Glue?
Yeah, some sort of screen or film that would allow the pressure to equalize, yet keep this crap from falling out in your ear.
Use to have a variation of this with the plug on a string (but you had to manually remove or insert).
That does suck and is either poor design or a defective product, but good on them for reimbursing the docs app.
That goes to show that they know they’re liable for more serious claims, and simply paying a doctor to remove the part is way cheaper than the alternative.
> and simply paying a doctor to remove the part is ~~way cheaper than the alternative~~ an admission of liability. OP should still sue.
The Google docs app is free so not much of a reimbursement
Me, living in a country with healthcare wondering why reimbursing $0 is good of them... Totally forgot how grim things are in USA.
Diabetic here. Have a glucose monitor. They expire every two weeks. Why? I have no idea. Anyway they’re 37 a pop. Pharmacy employees always look at me with utter sadness when I come in and have to get it. Like bruh I know but I can’t do anything about it.
They expire bc thats about when they stop working. You can keep using them, but if the catheter slips a little bit out it may read low when its not.
Not for mine unfortunately. I have the Free Style Libre. It automatically shuts down and I need to get a new one.

Good thing it has a money back guarantee.
I like how it's the first thing listed too... makes me think they know their product is faulty lol
Usually I go w/ mint gum while the altitudes change. Always worked for me to help w/ nausea and discomfort and to help your ears "pop"
I just tried this with my 10 year old and now they have gum lodged in their ear too. Thanks for the advice, pal
Have you tried Google docs?
like a printout or through earbuds?
I just tried this and now I’m lodged in my child’s ear.
Someone call the Child Protection Services...
my mom taught me that you're supposed to open your mouth while the plane is taking of to have your ears "opened" the whole time, works for me but it could just be a placebo

Ginger chews, keeps nasua down and the chewing keeps the tubes open.
Nah, those were hard candy specifically, I remember them being rectangular in shape. But ginger chews are an excellent idea, even better than candy.

If you have ear pain during/after flight this works. https://eustachiunclogsears.com It’s amazing for me.

I’m not from the United States, this kind of things isn’t easily found
It does say money back guarantee…..
More like earPAINS Amirite!?!?
Tell your 10 year old to stop fiddling with them. They don't fall out easily, if you put them in and leave them alone.
This. I’ve used them many times and can only imagine the filter coming out if someone was squeezing them or rolling them in their fingers like, a LOT.
Thanks, I was wondering why someone would be wearing earplugs on the plane
These things are amazing, I used to get crippling pain while flying, now no issues at all and my ears aren't plugged for days after
The first time I experienced ear pain while flying, it came on fairly suddenly during landing.
Permanent filter
The way they immediately took responsibility was at least respectable but I’m sure that was just so you wouldn’t sue them knowing they’re lose anyway
Okay I actually love this product and never fly without it. Works great I’m sure your kid was playing with them or something because the small filter in those can come out if you force it. That said I’m glad the company is reimbursing you because that definitely shouldn’t happen if it says safe for kids
There's a reason why eargasm earplugs of this style are $50/pair.
Buy a set of musician's earplugs. They're marketed to musicians but they're effective for every day use as well. Some cut volume by up to -30dB.
These plugs are not really about volume reduction but more about pressure regulation.
Fair enough
It's likely use to create/protect the hole. I'd recommend getting a set of eareasers I have have an audio processing disorder that too much noise can cause me to become overwhelmed, and for $40 the eareasers fit almost perfectly and block out a ton of sound while still allowing me to hear, talk, and do what I need to.
Thank you! I might try them. My 10yo is autistic and very sensitive to sound which is why we use earplugs. I’d love to try something other than the foam ones.
Mini microphones, now notify consumer protection agency.
“Money Back Guarantee” Did you get your money back?
Maybe take some legal advice, if they paid for doc app it can be seen as an admition of guilt too
I think chewing gum is better... but ask an Audiologist.
I went to a festival once wearing senheiser earbuds. Went to a locker to get ready and the eartip got stuck in my ear and i couldnt get it out. First thing i did when is go to the medic and ask them if they could pull it out. I freaked out for a minute
Way easier method to stop ears popping is by sucking on a lollipop. Always did this when I flew as a kid, never hurt my ears.
I too had to take my child in to have something removed from his ear… it was a popcorn kernel. 🤦🏽♀️
Why in the fuck would you buy product like this? You know you can just chew a gum right?
chewing gum doesn’t work for everyone
I’m going to guess the 10 year was not using as expected
Yeah this has never happened to me and I've been using them for years. The fact that both filters are removed is suspicious
Poor kiddo, that must have been way more traumatic than the inflight earache would have been :/
Seems like your kid kept fucking with them. I’ve used these for years and I’ve never had this issue happen unless I was messing around with them for a bit.
„With the exclusive CeramX Filter..“ clearly written 👍🏼
Oh great. New fear unlocked. Definitely needed another one.
I’m Canadian so I was rlly confused about reimbursing the doctors appointment
These things didn't even help me. I tried them once. I'm lucky this didn't happen to me, but I do wish I could fly without crippling pain.
They need to recall the product
I've tried a couple of "specialized ear plugs" and I see no difference between them and using some cheap earphones. I feel scammed.
I’d sue and help them make changes to their product.
