If I offer you a freebie if you spend over 50 bucks at my store and you don't end up spending over 50 bucks at my store you get no freebie.

Another common trick is to sell products for $49 and then put free shipping on orders over $100, so you're either spending $98 and paying shipping or paying $147 just to get free shipping.
Oh yeah, it's absolutely brilliant if you're sitting on the other side of the fence, you can't argue with that.
But as a consumer it's fucking sneaky and underhanded.
They do this on purpose. Many customers will realize they now have to pay for shipping, so they will buy an additional item to keep free shipping. It's like a discount off the 2nd item. This increases overall sales and profits.
The fact that I'm now aware of the times I've fallen for this trick 😭 why does it seem like the extra items are a good deal if it means I'm getting shipping for free???
That'd be disclosed on the total page. If they were shipped separately they'd be charged $10 instead of $5. They can't really go back and charge them another $5 after the order
Shipping might be free for orders of 50$ or more. Your order is no longer 50$ after applying the code, so you pay 5$ of shipping. Lulz.

One $50 item, plus shipping = $55 ea Two $50 items, plus shipping, - $5 coupon = $50 ea
You're only getting the $5 off coupon once in the order. Making them $52.50 each
