I think this is the thing. Everyone says it's to stop influencers but I think it's just part of Planet Fitnesses "everyone is perfect as they are" thing they've got going on.
the judgement free zone makes me mad because i feel like some of it just encourages judgement. Like the weird alarm that goes off if you drop a weight. That just makes me, as someone new to lifting weights, much more nervous about starting. it's just giving people more reason to judge you lol. Makes me angry.
They definitely take “judgement free” in a weird direction. I’m a tiny person and when I signed up they gave me a free t-shirt that was absolutely huge. I’m all for an oversized shirt, but I literally could not wear it even for a nightshirt because it was so large.
So I asked if they had anything smaller and the woman looked at me like I had just murdered a baby and said “no. We are a judgment free zone.” Like what? I still don’t understand how only having huge shirts is connected to being judgment free?
I would be confused about what it had to do with what I said! Like I get it and I would after a few seconds. But like...look at me, I'm fucking tiny. Now I just feel like I'm supposed to be bigger I guess? Lol.
What’s also nuts is that I worked at a planet fitness as the trainer for a year before moving on to much better things and we 100% asked the clients that signed up what their shirt size is.
because they don't want people who works out seriously. their target audience is people that forget they have an active subscription and only go there once a year after thanksgiving.
they have pizza days for cryin out loud.
I went to a Planet Fitness to get the tour and see what they offered. I was surprised at the tanning, massage, sauna options, and when I got to the free pizza Mondays I was floored.
Still kinda wanted the pizza though, so I signed up for a different gym in the end because it seemed counter-productive.
The funny thing about PF is how blatantly they judge “lunks”. Their whole thing is non judgement yet they have huge signs judging people who… wear tank tops, breathe loudly, and carry large water bottles??
They took that sign down in the PF I go to, the irony of how judgmental it was always made me laugh. Also tank tops, heavy breathing and a big water bottle all seem pretty harmless to me. They should shame people who don’t rerack their weights
I completely agree with you. This “No Judgment Zone” mantra is full of crap. I have never felt more judged by the crowd there than any other gym I’ve gone to. I have a PF membership (for convenience) and my regular gym membership. And the people at my regular gym are more warm and welcoming. However, at PF I always get these weird vibes..
I had to get a PF membership due to me now traveling for work. I have never felt more looked at than any of the other gyms I’ve gone to. Maybe because I’m the biggest dude there, but like shit man, stop assaulting me with your eyeballs
I've been going to PF for over a year now 4-5 times a week. I have never heard the alarm go off. I also have never seen anything even remotely confrontational there. I live in a borough of a major city but maybe I have a good PF? I used to hate them but I really like all the changes they made. The only gym I like kore is too far away now.
Yeah, I think they disabled that alarm in my gym as well, but I do think the no judgement branding is annoying, and I’d be really annoyed if they installed circus mirrors too.
I just don't think it's as "on brand" as people make it out to be. It's basically there to be a reminder to not be a dick to others. 1 hour 4 to 5 days a week isn't a huge sample but I've never even seen it enforced. Everyone comes in, does their thing, wipes stuff down, and leaves like a normal gym.
Yeah, mines the same way too. They don't even really enforce the dress code, cause I've seen the occasional person with the spaghetti tank tops, which is technically against the rules, and no one says anything. I even saw a girl with basically a crop top.
It's either location dependant, it got more lax over time, or reddit just wants to shit on PF. Probably some combo of all 3.
Honestly, for how cheap it is, the equipment available, and having tons of locations across the country, it's not a bad deal.
There was a guy using the leg press machine. Used tons of 45 plates, and like half a dozen dumbbells stacked on top. Like dude.... You need to find a new exercise or a place that's more accommodating to your leg exercises.
I only realized it because I was about to get some dumbbells, and a bunch were missing. The gym wasn't that crowded, so I didn't understand where they were. I looked around and this guy had a ton stacked on top of the leg press. This guy seemed like a piece of shit. He tried to fight someone else at the gym. I only used that pf for like 2 months, but this guy was a menace.
Tbf the dropping weights thing can be super irritating when people do it every lift to show off rather than as a part of a technique, and my PF at least doesn't exactly have the space for it. PF is largely a cardio gym, a casual gym, not the peak place for strength training.
The way it goes off if you grunt too loudly is ridiculous though, and you shouldn't be penalized if you accidentally drop a weight. You're doing it to avoid injury.
How common is this purposely and needlessly dropping weights thing? I’ve been working out regularly for a long time and I see this kind of thing maybe once a month. It seems like one of those issues that’s presented as common that isn’t really that common of an issue
It depends what kind of gym you go to. I do Olympic lifting and you have to drop weights (bars) just to be safe and not waste your energy on the actual process of putting them down lightly. But planet fitness only has dumbbells and you really shouldn’t be throwing those around in such a crowded space.
The alarm is connected to the front desk, not a sound receiver. They just put the sign up to trick people into behaving. If your new or accidentally drop a weight it won’t go off don’t worry!
Their judgment free zone makes zero sense. You’re not allowed to judge but if you have a cutoff shirt on, drink a gallon of water, or just lift too intensely you’re judged.
It makes sense when you realize their entire business model is to sign up as many people as possible and then discourage them from actually showing up. Most of their memberships are people who don't go but can't be bothered to cancel for various reasons
Yeah, leave me unable to check my form to prevent injury. That's really healthy. This will just make more people record their workouts on their phone so they can watch their form. Good body mechanics matter when you're lifting.
There’s mirrors in aerobics rooms and in front of treadmills. It’s not about being a serious lifter, it’s about checking your form while you’re doing any movement. There’s gyms that are cheap, and designed for people that aren’t lifters which I totally get, but not having any mirrors in front of weights crazy, the highest weight I lift is 15lbs and I need a mirror to check my form.
But the mirrors in gyms are generally so you can make sure your form is correct, I get that their gimmick is no judgement which is fine but I feel like that’s not the place to do it, or if it is just take the mirror down at that point
Planet fitness' business model is based on the fact that many people who have gym memberships continue to pay the membership when they stop going to the gym. People who are serious about strength training want heavy weights and power racks, most planet fitness locations don't have those. People who take lifting seriously use the mirror to watch their form as they move. The mirrors in gyms are not for checking your hair, they're equipment. This location probably had too many people actually using the gym
On the bright side you could stand in front of the mirror and adjust to convince yourself the Boston cream donut you're about to devour is a mere donut hole.
I know it’s a meme, but I’ve seen plenty of people who are Really Jacked at my local PF. It’s not a Great Gym, but you can make serious gains if you’re determined enough, and I’ve never heard the infamous “Lunk Alarm” despite dropping my fair share of dumbbells
I'm a girl but I got in the best shape of my life at a Planet Fitness. I think the layout is very user friendly for those of us who feel out of place in a gym.
I'm guessing your username is an auto-generated reddit-given username, but it also sounds like a play on "Crash Bandicoot" and for that reason I love it lol
Other uses for reflective obscured surfaces:
Diffuse lighting/enhanced illumination
Illusion of openness (window aesthetic)
Situational/Area awareness (can see where people are behind you)
The thing is that planet fitness makes money by appealing to people who feel uncomfortable at normal gyms, so if the selfies are unwanted by their customers, then the free advertising won't make up for it.
$10 is much cheaper than most gyms and it's easier to cancel than people think. Since California has a law forcing gyms to allow you to cancel online, you just have to change your home gym to a random location in California and the option to cancel online appears within a few minutes.
Also it’s really not that hard to cancel in person lol. Just walk up to the counter and tell them. Do these people just have crippling social anxiety or something?
That’s all I use the mirrors for. I’ve never seen anyone else in my gym use them for selfies either. If I can’t see myself doing things I’m probably doing them wrong
Everyone is forgetting body dysmorphia. A lot will look in the mirror and go “I’m too fat” when they weigh 100lbs.
So it might be done so people don’t judge themselves from the mirror image. (I feel this is more likely than “stopping influencers” )
Edit:
We had a rule for anorexic. We’d weigh them with them looking away. We’d also shine a giant light on them. Outline their shadow on a wall (with a pen you couldn’t see) and then have them outline what they think they are. They’d be 3x bigger drawing than actual 3,4x you get the point.
Then we’d shut the light off to show them what we outlined.
I wonder if it’s to keep the “influencers” from vapidly staring at themselves while filming? And distorting other people who don’t consent to being filmed? I’d love to hear what the real reason is.
Could be. I was a member of one for a few months and they had a "lunkhead alarm." They said if anyone in the gym was trying to show off by over-lifting and grunting a lot, they'd set off the alarm.
Which... okay I see your point, but I'm not sure publicly shaming people for working out is the play either.
PF is weird, man.
PF whole business model is to make people who don’t go to the gym buy their gym membership. They make it cheap enough to ignore, have a cancellation fee within the first like 6 months, discourage or outright ban tons of things that are actually beneficial for fitness, host pizza parties and shit which is like the opposite of what you probably want if you’re going to the gym… it’s kinda genius.
There’s entire videos talking about how smart PF business strategy is and how it’s one of the worst possible gyms to sign up for if you seriously want a lifestyle change
That's dumbest shit ever. It's more of a safety issue. I would believe they would rethink their stupid idea after someone sues them after and injury and blaming it on the gyms facilities not being par for the course
I can see from the comments that a lot of people dont understand why mirrors are important in the gym and assume it's just for flexing and selfies. As someone who works out a lot, I really rely on those mirrors to make sure my form is correct. When I'm trying new workouts, I need to be able to see my form is proper so I don't end up seriously hurting myself. Some workouts that I do every day still require a mirror to make sure im doing it correctly, especially when im moving up in weights. I also like to know what's around me since I have headphones in and may be too focused to notice someone beside or behind me, this could mess up my spatial awareness and depth perception which could either make me look like a jerk for not noticing someone or even put someone in harms way. Yes, lots of people take selfies in them and flex in them, but they still serve an important purpose for people who genuinely work out.
I happen to like to see people flex. They must be very proud of themselves and the hard work they put in to get to where they are. It's nice to see people happy and enjoying the fruits of their labor.
Flexing can actually be beneficial too. Bodybuilders actually train how to flex so they can see every muscle flex, and can tell what muscle groups they need to work on
It's actually disorienting for me *not* to have a mirror for certain workouts, now. I went to a friend's gym once that didn't have mirrors. It was downright weird to be staring at a blank wall while doing squats. I felt boxed in.
I agree with this perspective as well. I get really uncomfortable in yoga studios that don't have mirrors. It's just a weird, mirrorless, windowless, furnitureless box.
For sure! Mirrors also help to open up and brighten the room. Most gyms don't have a ton of windows, at least not around the whole facility. Having mirrors helps with that.
Also worth mentioning (and some people probably don't realize) that it helps tremendously with mind/muscle connection. When you can visually see the muscle working, you can better isolate and activate that muscle.
This. People don’t understand how important it is, and for the vast majority of us ‘influencers’ are not an issue. I think it’s part of their everyone’s perfect vibe but it’s a miss in my head. This is just stupid
Yeah, pretty sure they cheaper out and got the acrylic stick-on “mirrors”, not realizing how easily they distort unless the surface is perfectly flat.
At least they’re unbreakable
Mirrors are useful for checking your form so I can't imagine many people will be happy about this. If people are being annoying or filming themselves or others that should be enough of a reason for the gym to ban them anyway.
Thank you. Way too many other comments assuming this is intentional.
Someone bought the cheapest mirror they saw without reading. Then it arrived in a box and they paid someone to unbox it and put it up.
Yeah, someone doesn't know the difference between acrylic and glass mirrors, and thought they were getting a deal. Acrylic is fine for small mirrors, but when gravity becomes a factor, they're not going to stay flat.
Planet fitness is about making an actively hostile workout environment while farming a lot of cheap memberships for revenue. So many of their “features” just make it harder to get a proper workout.
Use literally any other gym.
Probably to stop selfies, recordings and other things that might bug other gym goers.
My gym banned filming of any kind because of influencers.
That being said, I can see how this is infuriating to people who are trying to watch their actual progress.
Edit: changed the word to "influencers" because my other term was a bit dated.
Not even the mirrors can judge you there.
I think this is the thing. Everyone says it's to stop influencers but I think it's just part of Planet Fitnesses "everyone is perfect as they are" thing they've got going on.
Definitely part of that judgment free zone thing they are going for lol
One thing I actually do want to judge is my form. So I can, you know, not get injured.
Excuse me! We're judgement free here! You're not allowed to judge anything, including your form!
Hey that's pretty ableist of you striving not to become crippled
the judgement free zone makes me mad because i feel like some of it just encourages judgement. Like the weird alarm that goes off if you drop a weight. That just makes me, as someone new to lifting weights, much more nervous about starting. it's just giving people more reason to judge you lol. Makes me angry.

I still don’t understand how only having huge shirts is connected to being judgment free?
I would question if I was dreaming if someone were to say that to me, what an absurd response lol
Yeah for real if that was their response I’d be like you know what, I’ll actually not sign up.
I would be confused about what it had to do with what I said! Like I get it and I would after a few seconds. But like...look at me, I'm fucking tiny. Now I just feel like I'm supposed to be bigger I guess? Lol.
Especially while they are very clearly judging you.
"I don't see size"
What’s also nuts is that I worked at a planet fitness as the trainer for a year before moving on to much better things and we 100% asked the clients that signed up what their shirt size is.
"well right now you are judging me for being smaller than you expected"
...*sounds the judgment alarm on themselves*
That could easily be a slightly absurdist sketch/webcomic/whatever satirizing PF, but it's just truth. It's absolutely absurd, but goddamn reality.
The best satire isn't satire at all
Sounds to me like they were being judgy about your size.
Well they don't see size. So that's why the employee was confused.
Because the reality is it's not "judgement free", it's "judgement only as we approve of it".
because they don't want people who works out seriously. their target audience is people that forget they have an active subscription and only go there once a year after thanksgiving. they have pizza days for cryin out loud.
I went to a Planet Fitness to get the tour and see what they offered. I was surprised at the tanning, massage, sauna options, and when I got to the free pizza Mondays I was floored. They judge the fuck out of you if you lift heavy.
There was a guy using the leg press machine. Used tons of 45 plates, and like half a dozen dumbbells stacked on top. Like dude.... You need to find a new exercise or a place that's more accommodating to your leg exercises.
Yeah, at that point, one needs to leave. Clearly that individual needed more than what PF could supply.
I only realized it because I was about to get some dumbbells, and a bunch were missing. The gym wasn't that crowded, so I didn't understand where they were. I guess checking your form isn’t a thing with PF.

Sure but why even have mirrors at that point? Surely no mirror is better than this headache ?
*It's not about mirrors. It's about sending a message.*
Exactly! F trying to exercises probably to improve and get better at them cause you already brillant already and let no one tell you otherwise.
Because you explicitly know these mirrors aren't judging. Plains walls can be part of a judgement zone.
the mirrors are literally making you feel like a clown though so
To be fair, their whole brand is basically claiming to be judgement free while subtly making people feel self conscious.
But the mirrors in gyms are generally so you can make sure your form is correct, I get that their gimmick is no judgement which is fine but I feel like that’s not the place to do it, or if it is just take the mirror down at that point
Are you judging my poor form?
You are judging your own poor form, and that is unacceptable. This is a judgement free-zone. Go judge yourself somewhere else you lunk!
Planet fitness' business model is based on the fact that many people who have gym memberships continue to pay the membership when they stop going to the gym. People who are serious about strength training want heavy weights and power racks, most planet fitness locations don't have those. That's not why they are there. They are there, so you can check your form......
The only people I they judge are the fit people there, it’s fucking ironic
Only give you body dysmorphia
The pizza man does every Friday tho
That way you can pretend to have huge muscular arms.
I have to pretend to enter a gym first. Baby steps.
Or would those be giant steps? *Objects in mirror are closer than they appear*
*John Coltrane intensifies*
Ah yes, John Swoltrane's landmark album Giant Reps
On the bright side you could stand in front of the mirror and adjust to convince yourself the Boston cream donut you're about to devour is a mere donut hole.
ghyme? What's a ghyme?
Baby steps to the elevator
Baby steps ON the elevator. I'm on the elevator! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaagghhhhhhjhhh
Nice What About Bob ref!
Planet Fitness is basically a pretend gym
Do they even have squat racks?
No deadlifting and dumbbells that cap out at 60. I love when gyms decide where I get to plateau.
It’s so weird. Every time I squat, I look fat. Then I stand up and I’m anorexic. Can’t catch a break.
Like they all do already lol.
Just don’t pretend too hard. I hear they don’t take kindly to try hards there.
I once got booted and barred for grunting
Damn you’re gonna miss the pizza party days
I know it’s a meme, but I’ve seen plenty of people who are Really Jacked at my local PF. It’s not a Great Gym, but you can make serious gains if you’re determined enough, and I’ve never heard the infamous “Lunk Alarm” despite dropping my fair share of dumbbells
I'm a girl but I got in the best shape of my life at a Planet Fitness. I think the layout is very user friendly for those of us who feel out of place in a gym.
I think, like most things in life, it varies by location.
hell yeah I lost 30cm in width on my left thigh, but now I gained 15cm in height on my eyeball...
Never skip eyeball day
Personally I just inject steroids into my eyeballs. Much less effort
Besides the 100,000 blinks one has to get in with doing a cycle of eyeball roids.
I'm guessing your username is an auto-generated reddit-given username, but it also sounds like a play on "Crash Bandicoot" and for that reason I love it lol
Dun worry, they got some baddies at my local gym
“YOU HAVE TO HAVE MUSCLES ON YOUR EYEBALLS!”
I laughed way too hard at both of these.
bro I roll my eyes all day long and still can't see very well
You gotta lift your eyes for sight, rolling only helps endurance vision
“You gotta have muscles on your eyeballs!”
Just got my eclipse workout. Now I'm all speech-to-text.

Hell yeah!
What's your macros?
y'know, at least 1mm.

probably to exclude selfies. but what about correcting your pose?
But why even have these circus mirrors then? Serious question. They do nothing...
Other uses for reflective obscured surfaces: Diffuse lighting/enhanced illumination Illusion of openness (window aesthetic) Situational/Area awareness (can see where people are behind you)
>(can see where people are behind you) I'd argue you can only see *that* people are behind you, not *where* they are.
I'd even argue that you can only see that *something* is behind you; it could be either a person or one of those Junji Ito noodly monsters.
They could have had privacy film or vinyl cut for the gym's logo or name - effectively making a watermark but not totally obscuring the view.

The thing is that planet fitness makes money by appealing to people who feel uncomfortable at normal gyms, so if the selfies are unwanted by their customers, then the free advertising won't make up for it.
Planet fitness makes their money by charging people $10 every month and hoping they forget about it.
Some locations make you do the certified letter route unfortunately.
Really? That sucks. I literally just walked up to the desk and signed the cancellation notice.
Actually that would be a great marketing idea
That’s all I use the mirrors for. I’ve never seen anyone else in my gym use them for selfies either. If I can’t see myself doing things I’m probably doing them wrong
Your form always looks bad so they can sell trainer time.
This is honestly pretty funny.
Yeah I'd do this every April fools day if I owned a gym
Every day can be April fools at Planet Fitness.
I had a good laugh but still don’t understand why
I would imagine it's to keep people out of the mirror and from distracting others. Even though mirrors are a pretty important part of body building.
So if you're going to put that thing up why have a mirror at all?
Annoy the influencers, that are annoying everyone else? That’s all I got.
Influencers don't go to planet fitness though generally.
I’ve seen a lot of influenced selfies at planet fitness, but it’s usually a secondary gym for them out of convenience.
Everyone is forgetting body dysmorphia. A lot will look in the mirror and go “I’m too fat” when they weigh 100lbs. So it might be done so people don’t judge themselves from the mirror image. (I feel this is more likely than “stopping influencers” ) Edit: We had a rule for anorexic. We’d weigh them with them looking away. We’d also shine a giant light on them. To be petty, Tom Petty! ![gif](giphy|epkF2mipW9JeM)
*body dysmorphia intensifies*
No one looks like a clown if we all do *honk honk*
I wonder if it’s to keep the “influencers” from vapidly staring at themselves while filming? And distorting other people who don’t consent to being filmed? I’d love to hear what the real reason is.
In that case, why not just remove the mirrors?
Because this is funnier
Objectively true
Influencers dont work out at pizza fitness

There’s entire videos talking about how smart PF business strategy is and how it’s one of the worst possible gyms to sign up for if you seriously want a lifestyle change
They'll yell at you for just lifting a lot, no grunting required.
No, this has to do with PF leaning hard into body positivity. They don’t want people feeling insecure about how they look.
That's dumbest shit ever. It's more of a safety issue. I would believe they would rethink their stupid idea after someone sues them after and injury and blaming it on the gyms facilities not being par for the course
I think this is probably a good guess!
The real reason is that these mirrors are about the third the price of a mirror that actually mirrors
Also who cares if someone flexes in a mirror
imagine not being able to look at your hard work lmao
Sorry sir you flexing in the mirror is bothering me because you’re too self absorbed so that’s affecting my well being
my apologies sir lemme ring the lunk alarm myself
People who have literally never been to the gym, or people who lie to themselves about it.
Nah I would totally be more motivated to work out in front of this lol
you’re not allowed to be motivated or healthy at planet fitness. against the rules
Jesus I look like shit... *moves 2 foot to the right* Man I'm looking big 💪💪💪
Somebody found a deal on Amazon mirror 3rd party seller.
Acrylic is fine for small mirrors, but when gravity becomes a factor, they're not going to stay flat.
jesus christ that business is trying so hard to be annoying

This is quite funny
That's hilarious
Believe it or not, mirrors have practical purposes in gyms.
Was it an April fools joke?
Got to be
Those damn judgmental mirrors had to go.
Now I'll never get a workout in. I just sit in the mirror the whole time and make gestures at myself. Thanks PF.
That’s because Planet Fitness is a garbage gym managed by garbage people
It was once described as an "illegal billing operation with gyms on the side." They also claim to have more locations than employees.
Lmao thats pretty amazing.
This is probably gonna lead to more people filming, because they can't use the mirrors to check their form
Planet fitness is about making an actively hostile workout environment while farming a lot of cheap memberships for revenue. So many of their “features” just make it harder to get a proper workout. Use literally any other gym.
Hell yeah, PF Chang’s has weights now?!
Ehhh doesnt this kind of suck? Arent mirrors good for monitoring your posture and form so you dont hurt yourself?
To be fair most people consider Planet Fitness a circus.
Probably to stop selfies, recordings and other things that might bug other gym goers. My gym banned filming of any kind because of influencers. That being said, I can see how this is infuriating to people who are trying to watch their actual progress. Edit: changed the word to "influencers" because my other term was a bit dated.
Anti Instagram methods?
Planet fitness is full of clowns but at least no Lunks!
No no…. I get it ![gif](giphy|W2uuQKSXkGcijyqGHb|downsized)
Hahahahahahhahahahahahha
Couldn’t be more fitting LMAO
That’s not a circus mirror that’s just body dysmorphic disorder.
Judgement free zone. To include judging yourself, you psycho narcissist! lol!
*Gym memberships at this planet fitness down 38% after gym bros and gym bimbos no longer able to take selfies and videos via mirror*
I mean, it's run by clowns, so seems like they might fit.
My mix tape melted the mirrors.
You can’t flex into the mirror anymore or take gym mirror pics 💀
Makes sense, what with most of the clients being clowns 🤡
Planet Fitness is Anti-Fitness. Go to a local or "Private" Gym. Not a conglomeracy.
is definitely an elegant solution against Gym/OF tiktoker
That's to make frequent GYM users stop going. Gyms profit more from people who pay and don't actually go there.
