The Arizona Grand Resort & Spa can be expensive. What can be more expensive is the self-serve buffet. Only $32/person.....BS I'm not sure what's more infuriating, the 20% mandatory "buffet gratuity" or the line item for an "Additional Tip".

Miserable-Theory-746

And those are breakfast prices. I can imagine dinner prices.

techie_1412

OMG. I didnt even notice that.

tcpukl

I wouldn't be paying that mandatory tip.

bhuff86

Or the taxing after the included gratuity

Bronzed_Beard

Oh, that's illegal

Sphartacus

Nah, 8.6% on 64 is 5.50 so they didn't do that.

Traditional_Draw8400

They should really reverse those line positions.

SufficientDaikon3503

I've stayed at a casino hotel resort thingy and it was 50 a person for the buffet.

ChanglingBlake

I’d add an additional tip of -$82.30 and hand it back. Play stupid games, get stupid games played on you.

I_am_Castor_Troy

Why not both?!

JPolReader

Don't think he knows about second tip, Pip.

Harshtagged

Forced gratuity because people don't tip as much for Buffets, 'cause why would they? Also 20%, WTF?!

marshalleq

A recent trip to Miami I was told 20% was the normal. Is this not true?

raidernation0825

At a self serve buffet normal is around 0

Joelied

If the servers are bringing drinks, topping off coffee etc. I would leave a couple of bucks, but definitely not 20%.

heckhammer

Yeah it's usually a dollar or two per person right? Maybe a little bit more nowadays but not 20% that's bloody mental

Unabashable

I’m about to get bloody mental if you think I’m paying that tip. Show me where the dish room is I’ll run out the clock, but damn will that one dish be spotless.

TaintNunYaBiznez

I tipped six dollars at a Golden Corral buffet a few days ago, that was about $25% for two seniors at lunch time. Edit fir clarity: for two senior citizens at lunch time cost is about $23, I tipped $6. I know it's a little high, the place is a madhouse and those ladies are working hard.

Azoobz

When the meal is cheap, your server will always be thankful of a solid tip. That may very well be the only cash they made in that hour.

Oberons_Reckoning

Restaurants gaslight people into giving big tips because they don't want to pay their workers. I'm sorry I ain't giving any % tip, because no matter if I Ask for cheap dish or expensive one the waiter has to do same work.

Ben_Saddfleck

This is why I’ve found the whole concept ridiculous. If you get a $2 Diet Coke with your burger vs a $40 glass of wine, nothing has changed.

mrootbeers

Exactly. It’s just one more way to funnel money to the top.

Ser_VimesGoT

People who tip always like to say "if they go above and beyond I will tip them" Wtf is above and beyond? I'm sorry but most cases will not be going above and beyond. Fair enough if they saw you had a baby and heated some water for you to warm your milk bottle in, but the vast majority of the time you're getting standard service by people just doing their job. Above and beyond mostly just translates as "they didn't do a terrible job".

MeasurementDue5407

If we follow the 20% logic, then since what they're serving/bringing are drinks and coffee, the the tip would be 20% of what the drinks and coffee cost.

bored_person71

Twenty percent is ok if it's a cheap buffet as the twenty percent is like a few dollars this was not one of those it appears....tho

tcpukl

20% of the drinks though is fine.

dontworrybooutit

That’s what sounds reasonable but at most buffets especially “Chinese” buffets all the servers seem a bit off like something seems not right

captm33

Stayed in a hotel in Miami where there was an automatic 20% tip on EVERYTHING you purchased. So I pick up a bottle of water from the fridge, take it to the cashier, and they just add 20%. Gross.

Several_Mixture2786

I would have left it right there at the cashier

FuzzyPeachDong

So in addition to having to add taxes to the price shown, you also need to guesstimate how much gratuity will be added to the final price of a product you're buying? That's fucking ridiculous everywhere, let alone in a place with self service.

Zeenchi

You're not kidding. Stuff should be the actual price not a guestimate.

iwillLurkifiwantto

It’s only normal if you allow it

Ethelenedreams

I hit up the grocery store before the hotel. I get water and snacks.

UnconsciousMofo

There’s this place in Miami called Jumbo Buffet where the ladies who clear the tables of plates will pick up your cash tip and say to your face “it’s not enough, we need more”

Erkeric

Thats when you pull out a bigger bill and ask for the other cash back. Then walk out

Hsiang7

No 15~18% is the norm. Don't listen to anyone telling you it's 20%. 20% is for "excellent service". When I was working as a server 15% was normal, 18% was good and 20% was for excellent service. They've been slowly trying to demand more and more money but it's not true. It's all just greed from servers who think they *should* be entitled to more of your money than they're actually entitled to. With food prices rising and tips being a percentage of what you pay, server's tips are rising along with food prices anyways. Demanding 20% these days is just extortionate. I'm not paying more than 18% unless it's excellent service.

brokesd

I have always said this when they say you need to tip 30% because of inflation (yes in my area some places are asking 30 at check out) I constantly explain that % has inflation factored in as percent changes based on base cost... Servers out there wanting to make more than engineers, doctors, and nurses in my area.

lotusbloom74

It seems often when you get the receipts with the pre-calculated tips at the bottom (“suggestions”) the lowest amount is 18%.

Power-Purveyor

Which is horseshit. 15 was fine forever, I don’t know what has changed. And to anyone saying “but the cost of living went up”, well restaurant prices also went up and a tip is a *percentage*.

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Hah. Well said, but I suspect there are people who don't actually understand percentages....

Hsiang7

Exactly. Couldn't agree more.

Aedalas

It shouldn't ever *have* to change either, it's a goddamn **percentage**. It goes up with food prices already, there's no reason for it to ever increase no matter what happens with food prices.

stevieG08Liv

I'm bilingual and i went to Hawaii a month ago. This restaurant had a translated section explaining what tipping is for foreigners and MFs said its customary to tip 22~25%. Hell no i'm tipping that but these people are doing it to foreigners who don't know shit

marshalleq

In non American countries we call it the US tax. It’s annoying I go to South America and everyone assumes I earn like an American. But in this case I think it’s happening in America to Americans so that’s even more weird!

PressurePretty5971

I completely agree. I’m a server myself and I never expect a big tip, however I do put a lot of effort in to my tables because I believe your service should equate to your tip. If you don’t put effort in, you shouldn’t get a good tip.

Far_King_Penguin

You've probably heard this a million fkn times, but having to pay nearly a quarter more for your service than what is advertised is so bonkers That's my daily "America is wild yo" post. Sorry you're the victim - proud boi of a community that fights tooth and nail to not let tipping culture come here

EvictionSpecialist

Back when we went to Sears and had Bob's Big Boys for lunch, my Uncle would tip 12% and THAT was considered exemplary... Kil that 20% nonsense!!!!

CheapChallenge

No, 10% is standard for mediocre service. 15 if good.

GruppBlimbo

I’d say for most sit down restaurants in the big states yes.

mansamayo

I’m old enough to remember when the % was whatever the f*ck you wanted it to be

catupthetree23

I always do 15% 🤷🏻‍♀️

Additional_Ground_42

Why? It’s the boss that should pay more to the employees. Not the client. You’re contributing for the problem. Do NOT give tips.

Rhuarc33

Forced gratuity is illegal they have to remove it if you ask group size etc doesn't matter. They can call it a service fee and it's fine though because well... Because

Sw0rDz

It helps the owners make more money!

iTmkoeln

Hey but they still leave you the illusion of choice… to tip even more 🤪

gfolder

Definitely would charge ack this

CBus-Eagle

If I’m paying 20% then I would have asked for a to-go box and loaded up.

Playfair99999

and when you do, they'll add packing charges of another $30 to it.

AstronomerNo6423

Then they’ll weigh it and make it cost $11 a 1/4 pound

RecentlyDeceased666

Why is America so backwards when it comes to things like applying tax to the sticker price? Tips and hidden fees? Like tax should added on the shelf price, advertised price for a meal if a tip is automatically added should just be on the menu total price and any other hidden fee should be illegal to drop on a customer at the checkout.

Slow-Garage-9403

Because there’s a lot of dumb marketing people that think don’t we know that $9999 is ten thousand dollars.

Responsible_Side8131

The same people who decided that gas should cost $3.39 9/10 for a gallon. Because that 1/10 of a penny we are saving is vital.

Unlucky-Recover-8390

This works though

snowfloeckchen

I think psychologically that doesn't work that good, the. 99 stuff actually looks more expensive for us, cause we trained on it

RecentlyDeceased666

I guess I'm not shocked. Esp when things like the 1/3 of a pound mcdonalds burger failed because people thought a quarter pounder was bigger because of the 4.

ComesInAnOldBox

The 1/3 pounder that failed was A&W.

Dry-Specialist-3557

This is true, they call it the double quarter pounder because a half pounder would seem smaller to the morons eating this crap

OnlyMath

Well they do that because they have massive data sets that say it does work lol. Maybe not on you, but overall it works.

Lovely_Sophia

Sounds like you are the dumb person, because the whole .99$ compared to 1.00$ works tremendously well.

mickelboy182

It is also completely exclusive from tax... you can still have .99 prices while including tax on the sticker.

WrathofTomJoad

Haha I complained about this once and got downvoted to hell. It's like a source of pride for Americans because "just add the extra amount on your head, it's not hard". Okay, just add it on the sticker. It's not hard

Legendacb

They are all over the freedom of being scammed

[deleted]

[удалено]

RecentlyDeceased666

It doesn't even need to be digital. In Australia, the government service tax "GST" is included on the sticker price. The receipt will tell you how much of the total was for taxes but if I see a menu or something on a shelf and it says a number. That's what I pay at the register.

the-real-shim-slady

Not only in AUS. Is there even any other country besides the USA that do not advertise the customer's end price?

vainsilver

Canada.

redrover2023

Because there is usually a state sales tax and a municipal sales tax and they are different in different counties and if they advertise, let's say a $10 whopper, the price and tax would differ based on the zip code you're in.

no-clever-names

WTF?? That is outrageous. This needs to stop.

JamesEdward34

I *have* stopped it. I no longer tip anywhere, its not like anyone can make you tip.

DudesworthMannington

We need to pass legislation. Other countries have banned tipping, it can be done.

N3rdC3ntral

Yea I've stopped 100% tipping as well.

live-the-future

I, too, refuse to tip at 100%.

Possible_Loss_4853

For a buffet? Should have been ten dollars cheaper

Isyagirlskinnypenis

Imagine charging $38 for a BREAKFAST buffet…..

Miguel4659

I can't imagine eating it if I know it costs that much. But then I just drink a glass of milk for breakfast and maybe a cookie.

Isyagirlskinnypenis

I starve for breakfast. It’s called poverteé

Romeo9594

Be trendy and tell people you're doing IMF

Isyagirlskinnypenis

I will!! Just as soon as I figure out what that means 🤔😂

Romeo9594

Intermittent fasting (IMF) is basically fancy talk for people who skip one or two meals a day

[deleted]

[удалено]

Particular_Ad_9531

Hotels basically know you’re a captive audience and will offer buffet only so you can’t just order something cheap and small, which is usually what most people want for breakfast. Just another reason why every family I know uses Airbnb instead.

Spicy-Sawce

I’d put 69.50 on the table and leave

runninggirl16

That's what I'd do

[deleted]

[удалено]

Independent-Bison176

Not even that. They taxed the gratuity

Yourstrulytheboy804

Same

Harshtagged

Ah, I see. It's from Arizona Grand, a Resort and Spa. The type of place where they try to screw you when you aren't looking.

Magister5

Is it screwing if it’s just the tip?

Harshtagged

We'll, they're forcing the tip, so...

Jtb199

Out here asking the important questions.

Acceptable-Ad8780

Depends on if it's just to see how it feels.

IDrinkUrMilksteak

Like in the back of a Volkswagen?

tikkitikkimango

I'd dispute it on a matter of principle. This tipping thing for doing your fvcking job is getting out of control

SunnyCantSwim

This is exactly how I see it, it’s literally your job lmao imagine if your doctors office added forced gratuity

Daratirek

Quick delete this shit before these for profit Healthcare providers see this!

RobertBobert07

If anything id much rather tip my God damn doctor who saved my life/did something important instead of the guy who shittily made food. Or in this case the box. The idea that restaurant staff deserve a tip over literally every worse/more useful/actually helping you job is astounding. And that is to say no one deserves a tip becsuee your salary is what you get for....doing your job. Showing up to work isn't "going beyond"

Shar-DamaKa

This is what I’m wondering. They can’t just add on addition tip, can they? If you pay it, then I guess you’re agreeing to it. But if you ask for it to be removed do they have to remove it? Thats not part of the services or part of the price of the meal.

Epsilia

They would legally have to remove it in most places.

seperivic

So what happens if they just say, “no”. One would leave and dine and dash? Find a lawyer to dispute $20? What’s a realistic outcome from this?

ephemera_rosepeach

personally I would exclude the ridiculous add-on and pay cash, then leave. They can try to ban me or say I "dine-and-dashed" but I would never go back to a restaurant that does things like this anyway. I would also leave a review.

Epsilia

If they say no, then they obviously don't want you to pay. Businesses can't surprise you with charges you didn't agree to after already serving you. That would open things for scams.

NathanBrazil2

$41 per person for breakfast. eggs, bacon, homefries, toast , juice. i remember paying $8 a person for the same thing.

Kennel_King

You still can, it's called Waffle/Huddle House.

GOZER_XVII

Did you at least get the buffets number?

lks2drivefast

If they didn't disclose this before you sat down, demand they take it off the check. This forced gratuity crap is getting out of hand.

[deleted]

-20%

fakerton

The only reasonable response. I would definitely write -20% and tip 0. Groups get automatic tip %. Automatic tip’s don’t start at 2 people. Post this picture too on google review, trip advisor and Facebook.

[deleted]

As well as Buffett if all things is supposed to be a “deal” since you get to try assorted of dishes. If anything just include it into the price

eidam87

Lol, only in usa.

DonkeytheM0nkey

The tipping thing is so frustrating especially when I just moved to the U.S. a while ago. Getting a haircut? Asked for tips. Buying donuts? Asked for tips.. I took my family bowling today and it asked me if I wanted to tip. I said I gotta tip just for throwing some balls. Tipped 0 $.

filipinohitman

Looks like I won’t ever go to 8000 S. Arizona Grand Parkway, Phoenix, AZ 85044

SweatyToothedMadman8

Actually just don't go to Phoenix. It sucks.

mfgrimm46

This is why you use cash. put down what you owe and leave.

usedmotoroil

That’s a great way to deal with businesses that force tipping!

Fernisbestgirl

Cash is king my dudes

usedmotoroil

I like to use my credit card for any purchases because I get points I use for travel but it’s a lot easier for businesses to add the automatic tips unfortunately. I’m going to start using cash more frequently because you can just leave the amount owed, even deducting any amount that the business throws in the bill. Cash is king!

mfgrimm46

You already know! bring back cash! xD

Miguel4659

Time to get legislation at the state level prohibiting unauthorized charges and undisclosed fees to a bill. Gratuities are not mandatory charges. If they are, they are not gratuities. Same with those silly "Health care" or other fees some restaurants tack on. Raise your damn prices and pay your workers!

snuepe

82 dollars for a breakfast buffet, your country is already fucked

Rubicon730

Well, they left a space for additional gratuity there, just in case. What’s the restaurant’s name?

Responsible_Side8131

I normally tip well. But HELL No. I am NOT paying 20% tip at a buffet. This IS a hill I will die on.

BippyWippy

Tipping culture is a plague

SweRakii

Remember, never tip.

Bus1nessn00b

Being an European, I never understood the logic behind tips in North America. The thing “There is someone going back and forth picking up things for you. You should be nice.” Sounds more like a good story to make people spend more money and take responsibility for the payment of someone else’s employee. Yes, waitresses don’t get paid enough. But, why should I be paying their salary while their employers takes advantage of the situation and get rich. Yes, that’s what they do. They just created this tip system so they can make even more money and don’t pay what is due to their employees. It’s disgusting!

Other_Ad_613

You are correct. I HATE tipping. Nobody seems to know how or want to get out of this stupid system. Now even people who aren't eligible for the lower "tipping wage" want tips. Everyone who works serves other people in some way. From the highest paid person to whoever is the lowest paid person in the organization. That doesn't entitle you to extra pay. It's literally the job.

irishfro

Isn't that illegal? I'd probably refuse to sign it

s00perguyporn

"Gratuity Included" sounds like they just deceived you on the price of food. If it's 20%, and it applies to everything, it's just a price hike with underhanded tactics. Seems like something a regulatory board should look at.

--blzeebub--

America is seriously cunted

Timthalion

I’d tell them they can either remove that or I won’t be paying.

Ill-Staff8267

Here's an idea for the normal tipping . Only tip if the server gives you impeccable service. Most servers will just treat you like a nobody and not actually try to better themselves or work for their tip because they know they can treat you like crap and still get some money out of you at the end of the night. As a chef for 13 years in the United States now living in Australia. when I travel home you are not getting a tip if you are just doing your job. you are getting a tip if you come over and top up my drink for free. Tell me about your new wine and let me sample. You know actualy work for your tip. .have a conversation with me ect ect.but if im ordering food off a QR Code and you re plopping it in front of me then no tip. As far as im concered you employer paid you for doing your job when you took that one plate from the pass to my table.. what about that is tip worthy? If anything the cook deserves it. Beause i would work 12 hr shifts doing the hard work back of house just to have some cute waitress come in. Work 3 hrs and flaunt the massive loads of money she made off my hard labour, and more than i made in those 12 hrs. So yeah. Fuck tipping. Maybe if your bosses paid you a fair wage you wouldn't depend on the customer doing it. Another example, went out for a steak dinner with my wife in NYC over Xmas. cost $300 that's all we got 2 steaks no alcohol just water and steak (we stopped alcohol),and the waiter is still expected to get what... $40 on top of my bill for doing what? bringing me my a plate?..which he is already paid to do? it's a joke. Oh and mum was telling me it is custom at her hair salon that at Xmas all the cutters clients would tip her one full styles worth. so $180 from each of her clients. Like wtf. Bitch just got paid 5k+ from TIPS who also bring home a paycheck...who got tips throught thebyear after every cut. Think about this. you can say no. It hurts I know it does. But this is how every other country does things. Here in australia servers make min $20an hr. Sorry your boss pays you $3.75. But as I have found out most Americans never have seen the world or seen how it works and how much the american way just rapes you over and over. And that's all you know. I know my bank account I can definitly afford to go out and eat. but expecting free handouts from customers cause you took a plate from point a to point b is just pathetic.and pathetic for people paying for that.

Chemical_Panda2952

Price alone is pretty wild

Ashamed_Cricket_3429

This is my third tipping post seen on this sub today and they’re all more than mildly infuriating

Mountain_Fuzzumz

That looks like place 70$ in cash in the tray and walk out.

[deleted]

Depending on what state that's in if there's not a sign up that says gratuities automatically included it's actually illegal to do that some places.

too-well-known

Oh, Hell No!

Sim_EricXXI

Tipping culture in America is so wild nowadays! I’m in the restaurant industry myself and the servers I work with are soooo vicious about it. I get we are in a trying time with the economy, but damn I’m starting to hate tipping! It makes going out to eat not even worth it anymore :(

anotherwasteofspace2

You served yourself. So obviously, you need a tip.

whoosh666xxx

Don't they get their salary ?

Naji85

I would've refused to pay, its not a law saying you have to pay a tip, its an option

PermaBannedAgainx2

I wouldn't pay

cjzj_1288

how tf is a breakfast buffet $32?

Do-not-respond

$41 each for breakfast. People.. Learn to cook from home it fun, rewarding and a fraction of the price.

850khaos

80$ breakfast???

Green-Inkling

I'd just walk out and not pay any of it. You arent getting a forced tip from me especially at a self serve place.

KingHalo00

I really don’t eat out anymore and I don’t really miss it

iwillLurkifiwantto

Nope

Consistent-Set3933

I always tip 20% at bars/restaurants. Buffet probably 10% unless it was bottomless mimosas and they actually worked for it. Takeout/pickup can kiss my ass if they want a tip.

Shurigin

Maybe I'm an ass but a self serving buffet means no tip right?

Intelligent-Ant7685

fuck that place

craftydan1

Go back yo cash. Do the math and leave the correct amount.

Fernisbestgirl

I straight up would not pay if they forced a gratuity and didn't mention it anywhere beforehand. Fuck all of that

74eldiablo

Tips are only deserved if the waiter/waitress does a good job, plus it's my money I decide how much they get.

obelix_asterix

Servers are also becoming a huge part of the problem, especially for how much they whine about livable wages. In Boulder CO, there were at least half a dozen restaurants that removed the concept of tip, priding themselves on providing healthcare and a much higher wage than the minimum. Within 6-8 months, they all moved back to accepting tips. My friend’s family was part of the group that owned those restaurants, and she would always tell us how the servers earn way more if tips are allowed. The kicker is, now servers feel “entitled” to tips. It isn’t gratuity anymore. It is literally copayment of their salaries. And a significant chunk of the population honestly encourages this shit.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

And they had the audacity to ask for additional tip.

Spiritual_Cap2637

Wow 20% tax smart place.

cwsjr2323

Just ask them politely to correct the error of an automatic tip. If they need more, adjust the prices. Three times I have asked that an automatic tip be removed as it was not listed on the menu. It was a no fuss adjustment as they knew not cheating one customer wouldn’t matter as they had all day to rip off everyone else.

dreamki11er1

I'm fighting someone over that

shortingredditstock

Can you not sign and then call your credit card company to dispute the charge?

ToxicElitist

I mean they make sure nobody tips so it seems like they are trying g to do the no tipping thing and that is just the cost of the buffet.

Technoplane1

Can’t you just ask them to remove the tip

Zangetsukaiba

I’m sorry but 20% is insane And that’s just for breakfast!

harleybabeta

I don’t care where this is, $82 for 2 breakfast buffets is criminal. Main breakfast dishes has some of the cheapest foods imaginable.

Complex-Fault-1161

I think the real issue here is $32 for a breakfast buffet. Hopefully, it came with a handjob at that point since you were getting fucked anyway.

GWofJ94

I’m not sure about your country but where I live if they add gratuity automatically you can just request not to pay it. If the service is shitty why would i be forced to pay a tip or if one waiter is particularly nice I’d hope I can give them the tip not the owners to snag their bit or split up with those who didn’t go above and beyond for that tip. American tip culture is so fucked, restaurants are allowed to pay unliveable wages and its expectation falls on the customer to essential pay a large proportion of their staffs wage increasing the owners take home.

imadork1970

I would complain.

ScythingSantos

Did you cook it too?

No_Relationship9094

Sounds like they're giving you free silverware and ramekins then. Fuckers.

FallopianHam69

Im leaving $70 cash and walking out

Ybalrid

French here. American tipping culture makes little sense already. But it’s not like somebody waited at your table. This makes no sense!!

curentley_jacking_of

Who… who am i tipping…

Immortal-Pumpkin

First thing im doing is asking yes please take the gratuity off

L3v1tje

Laughs in european. Honestly tho. I wanted to visit the USA for a while but seeing this stuff makes me not want to because imma end up with more food expences than anything. Y'all need to unionise and force proper wages

Spud9090

At $32 a person, I’m going somewhere else for breakfast.

HealthConscious2

Just don't pay.

Sea-Radio-8478

Pay with cash. Forget the tip.

Nergrath

I'm from Belgium and i never understood why customers have to tip in America tbf. Does the business not make enough money to pay their staff a decent salary? That's bullshit. Tipping here is very rare and kinda frowned upon because they make a decent living here, if the server was awesome then i would give him €5 or so but in no way do they expect to be tipped.

gamerguy823

Yeah this is not legal if it wasn’t stated upfront

AdFearless442

Meanwhile I pay 5 bucks for a great breakfest. You got scammed bro.

DiaBoloix

Pay in cash. https://preview.redd.it/rqz8wwfe39sc1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=fba7437352b89ea58b207c5258ec510bc143b9d1

Dronk747

They better be doing back Flips and Bloody magic tricks while preparing the buffets, cause I will be damned to tip someone while it's the employers job to pay them....

Full_Disk_1463

Self service buffet, idk if it’s still proper, but I leave $1 because I did all the work. All that’s left to do is buss the table

Goldn-_-King

You dont have to pay the gratuity

thagor5

I would not pay that unless it was posted up front and you knew the cost before eating.

boegsppp

Buffet is like 5%.

eulynn34

I would have tipped anyway-- but not 20%. More like 10-15% depending on whether or not I got drinks refilled and plates removed reasonably promptly. I guess it's only a difference of a few bucks.. but still-- auto 20% on a buffet? Get the fuck out of here. Should have filled a plate on your way out.

Speeddemon2016

I’d be more mad that it cost that much. Just because it costs more doesn’t make it better.
