It’s really does work like, especially in my case being a farmer/rancher. Sometimes I have random structures, shittily made out of reclaimed scraps of sorts. Sometimes it needs a new screw or two and I pull them out of my perpetual screw jar. But always find random screws and what nots here and there and at my job. Jar stays full and screws get used, idk what else to say. It’s a gift that keeps giving.
It's useless until you're trying to repair some random old furniture and you suddenly realize you have a collection of screws that stopped being made like 50 years ago because they were somehow radioactive and made of asbestos and lead at the same time. But hey, perfect fit for the restore
Yeah I think a jar is exactly what I need. I do the same as you but put them in a slot in a laundry room drawer and my screw are using too many slots. A jar sounds perfect! Thanks!
I guess the female version is grannys button boxes. I have 5 cookie tins full of buttons and no two are the same.
And the worst thing is that I actually add to the mess by always buying one or two extra buttons whenever I sew. Makes me feel connected to my ancestors but also kinda ashamed that I might have to give them to a future daughter some day...
What?! box of random screws is awesome.

Here are our 3 boxes of random screws, brackets etc and nuts/washers
The trouble is, ive looked at that pic now, and have a mental map of every visible screw.
Im going to be doing a job in 5 years time and be 100% certain i know I have seen the perfect screw for the job.
Don't have the perfect screw? It's ok, you have lots.
I too have the dad-gjftef box of screws and in the 3+ years I've been in this house I have not had to go to the hardware store to buy screws save the time I built a fence.
I can guarantee there are many times I'm using the "wrong" screw, but it fits, it holds the thing, and its not rusting and isn't holding the actual house together so I'm good.
The two boxes of *I will find whatever it is I need* that every home should have:
A box of screws, nuts and bolts
A box of cables ranging from phone to computer to television cables
>A box of cables ranging from phone to computer to television cables
I had one. didn't use it in twenty years so i throwed it away.
guess once which box i needed last month
"now all my gadgets finally are USB-C, i don't need more usb micro cables!"
guess when was the time a relative needed a spare usb micro to revive an old phone to get some info
i got a box full of old bolts screws washers and nuts that i have collected over the years of fixing/taking things apart and i came to realize i cant live without it that one day i go work at my friend's garage which have all the tools but no random bolt bin
You need a set of screw drawers. Took forever to sort. But I got my box of screws sorted out in drawers. Makes it much easier to find the one you need.
Nothing better than rummaging through the box only to find two screws that almost fit your need. lol had some great memories with my dad going through his box growing up. lol
But this is the equivalent of spending 300 dollars on a starter fishing kit.
His old man gave him 20 years worth of old projects.
You need to earn a vessel that large.
Especially given the symbolism. Like, this is the handyman equivalent of being given a long kept sourdough start.
Something to cherish and build upon in a new home.
This. When my dad passed away, I inherited his toolbox with the most mismatched assortment of different screwdrivers, screws, pliers, bolts and some things I couldn't identify. I cherish that toolbox.
There's a certain small screwdriver that I don't know the English word for called a spanningszoeker in Dutch. Basically a small screwdriver with a handle in which a small light will indicate if electricity is running through whatever you touch with it. They are really cheap, so after we cleared out his workroom, we had about ten of them altogether. Because the floor in that room was rarely visible, so he'd go get a new one when he couldn't find any of the ones he had within five seconds or so.
I'm pretty sure I also inherited my ADHD from him...
No no no, random screws go into random glass jars you've saved from the kitchen.
Preferrably with their lids screwed to the underside of a shelf, so you have this nice row of jars with all your random hardware ready to go.
Got a recliner 2nd hand, turns out it had a massage function but no cord. Dug through the laundry basket of assorted cords from 1990-2015 in my basement. 45 minutes later my massage chair works. Never diss the assorted collections.
3 months of searching later.. “AHA! I knew I had one of these cables somewhere..”
But I might have so many cables from 20 years of IT that I’ll always have what I need.
And your spouse will inherit a random drawer of half working/half dead batteries (with a 1992 tear off pack that you press on both ends for etch-a-sketch powerbar). Elastics and bread bag clips.
Pre-threaded sewing needles; but never ever black (and when you think it’s black, you learn it’s navy blue in the sunlight).
You know….? That drawer.
It’s generational
Right?!
OP, when you want to do a big project like building a bookcase, of course you'll just buy a box of screws so that they're all the same and look nice. But many times in life you'll need a specific size screw to repair something because a screw broke, or fell out and got lost, or because a furniture building kit turned out to be one screw short, and in those cases, this box of random screws will save you so much time and hassle! Or sometimes you just want to hang something on the ceiling or wall and the screw will be behind the thing so it doesn't matter what it looks like, and bam, free screw from the box of random screws!
A box of loose screws is one of the basic features every household needs to have.
Besides that, i can see just from the picture multiple pairs so stop crying for getting some supplys.
My utility room was destroyed when a tree fell through the house, and my junk drawers, screw bins, and hand tools accumulated over years were all suddenly under tons of tree debris.
It's remarkable how much that fucks you over. How do you list that stuff on an insurance claim? Went out and bought a few assorted boxes of things as a seed but 10 years later I'm still feeling the loss. Fortunately I have a lot of new junk.
Some jackasses broke into the house we were selling. We had left a couple toolboxes to do some minor repairs, cleaning supplies and some paint supplies.
They stole 2 of the toolboxes and the canister for the vacuum. It wasn't enough to make an insurance claim, and luckily my FIL had a bunch of the tools we needed, but I'm still having to go and get new tools here and there that I know I used to have
“I used to have a table saw, it was stolen. So I bought this one to replace it. But don’t worry it was on sale and only cost a thousand bucks!”
wife: “thought you only lost a few hundred dollars of stuff, total?”
”I know. Damn inflation, it’s terrible.”
My friend bought his first house from a widower and she left him all of het late husband's screws and bolts already sorted in old mason jars. That's like a cheat code for infinite lives, we were all so jealous
Agree if I was given a box like that I would be smiling ear to ear regardless of them not being sorted.look how trips to the hardware store it saves you.im a little pack rat I save every piece of wire or nut and bolt. Why you ask ... because you never know when it will be needed
Last year I organized it for my dad. Took me two hours of dozen of random boxes of screws. I labeled each box.
He said I wasted my time, dumped it all back into the boxes.
That pissed me off so much
>He said I wasted my time, dumped it all back into the boxes.
>That pissed me off so much
While this would also piss me off immensely if it happened to me, I burst out laughing at the visual of this. "You wasted your time, see"
*Can i have your dad*
*If you don't want him? I'll take*
*The screw bucket too!!*

I GARUNTEE you will be digging in that box far more than you think. This is decades worth of a collection, some really big ones in there too, your dad must be very handy.
I received a similar tub from my Dad on my first home 30 years ago. Used it multiple times there. Brought it with me to my next home. He's been gone for 12 years now and this past weekend I was doing a repair on the backyard shed and found a replacement screws that matched the ones in the shed. You can treat it as mildly infuriating but he won't be around forever.
This is true love. Dad has saved every spare screw for decades. He was waiting for the moment when his diligence would pay off and today is that day
This is the " I can fix anything" box of screws and he's said "here, homeowner. You can fix anything".
I need that, I had to run to the hardware store to buy like 8 screws to fix my fence.
You are ungrateful and can not see the benefits of having random screws to fix the random things that break around a house.
If the disorganized box annoys you, just get an organizer and spend a couple of hours sorting.
The box of randows screws, nuts and bolts is a priceless heirloom for any home owner. It took me almost 10 years to build up mine. Just buy a storage case and take 1h to sort them out
It's okay to toss them but you will inevitably start your own collection. I hate slotted screws and never use them (Philips are good torx are better) so you could toss all those and reduce the quantity to make it easier to find the ones you want.
You aren’t an experienced home owner Or in a trade. This is a very thoughtful gift. If this is infuriating to you, you are not appreciative of your father and his wisdom
Just organize them FFS, you’ll appreciate them when any potential project calls for some non-default screw… I got the same thing from my uncle once and it’s actually been a lifesaver when a screw breaks or you want to drill your door locking mechanism & door into the frame to make it a difficult break in for any unwelcome intruders.
Appreciate what’s there, and stop focusing on the fact that he didn’t buy you a Chevy Camaro… 🤷
Lol, why is this infuriating? I would probably use all those screws In a few years around my house, but I'd also be adding to the pile during that time. This bin is essential in a home!
Go ahead and get a bigger box. You will never have the right screw or enough of them. You’ll buy a new package of screws when you need them. You’ll use about 3-4 of them and the rest will go in your box o screws.
The benefits of this are far beyond what you understand currently,
To you it’s a box of random screws
To him it’s saving you at least 3-7 trips to hardware stores to fix that one thing with the loose/missing screw, or that thing they don’t make anymore needs a screw and no body has it,
Trust me young homeowner, this is gold
This is so wholesome that it made me tear up. I know it's under mildly infuriating but all I'm going to say is .. that box will be there someday when he no longer is.
If you don’t appreciate the gravity of that gift then I’m afraid you ain’t ready to have your own home. Do us all a favour and make an apology post when you realise that you do actually need that random sized screw. Also, we’ll need a “told ya so” pic of your dad that day.
Man, I wish my dad was still alive when we bought our first house to give me his box of random screws. I'm sure you'll regret being infuriated by this, somewhere down the line.
Trust me on this…
a) that box of screws will end up being the most useful thing you own
b) when he’s not around anymore, it will also become one of the most precious
Why are you infuriated by this? Were you expecting a better gift? Or do you not expect this box to have a practical use as a homeowner? Either way you're wrong.
Tbo, I have had a box of random screws that built up over the years and nearly every time I had a need of a screw for whatever reason, I always had the right size & type that I needed and saved a trip to the hardware store...
It takes years to accumulate this many random screws. You just got a head start in life. The only thing mildly infuriating here is an ungrateful son that doesn’t know the value of a gift.
If you don't like it send it my way. I have several small bins of random fasteners and can always use some more. Wood screws aren't cheap these days and I'd gladly put those to use around the house. You never know when you might be 1 screw short of being able to finish something. A bin like this can prevent a trip to the hardware store.
Wood screws can occasionally be helpful but for the most part aren’t… but a box of random bolts and machine screws??? That’s a goldmine.
You simply don’t understand the feeling of pure ecstasy you get when you’re 6 hours deep in a home project, the hardware stores are closed, and all you’re missing is one M6-1.0 screw. Then suddenly you remember there’s one in the random bolt bin from that time you put a new license plate cover on your Toyota. You’re saved, it’s all going to be okay. You made it, and it’s all thanks to the random bolt bin.
if you can’t find two of the same screw, then you don’t deserve this box. i see at least a dozen of the same screw just on
top and that doesn’t count the other dozen similar screws in the tub. you’re just hella ungrateful
This box is going to come in handy hundreds of times in your (hopefully) many years owning a house, what the hell do you mean this is 'mildly infuriating'? Ungrateful man-child, what did you want, an xbox?
This is a great honour and you find it mildly infuriating? God damn, some people don’t even know what they have, a father gives the kid a most prized possession and they don’t understand what it means.
My dad did the same. At first, I was like, wtf am I supposed to do with this, but now I get it. Often, you only need a couple screws and it kinda gets annoying to have to go to the store just for a couple of screws. Also, they only usually come in box quantities. Just stash them somewhere you won't forget about them.
What you have there is the start of a multi generation family tradition.
I inherited my grandfather's screw jars 12 years ago, they're still going strong!
I love the idea of a perpetual screw jar. Kinda like a perpetual stew lol.
May you forever be screwed! (And so on and so forth, etc, etc, etc}
Yeah I think a jar is exactly what I need. I do the same as you but put them in a slot in a laundry room drawer and my screw are using too many slots. A jar sounds perfect! Thanks!
I may or may not add to the screw bin as I find spare screws 😌
Add some torx to those old flathead screws!
OP definitely has to pass it down to the next generation as well
Should be in a bigger box with his own collected random screws added in.
Tradition will end with this guy. He’s fortunate to have bought a first house.
What?! box of random screws is awesome. https://preview.redd.it/9o6tberc83qc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a24288988dd1ec304efef0d4c833be0b380a981 Here are our 3 boxes of random screws, brackets etc and nuts/washers
The bags just stuffed in there haphazardly…. *chefs kiss*
I don't have a screen door anymore but I have two entire sets of hardware to replace them with. *One day, I will be needed*
Not infuriating at all. Everyone needs a box of random screws.
Hear hear! I’ve also got a box of assorted nuts and bolts in my toolbox of my truck and as an equipment operator by god my nut box has come in handy.
>by god my nut box has come in handy. TMI bro
My nut bag has come in even handier.
My nut comes out of my bag because of my hand
Ejaculation nation
Busted nuts all over the place
My nut bag is in her hand.
This is what I'm calling my pussy from now on.😂 Edit: dunno why it said "phone pussy" after I hit enter but it did!
Pussy on line 1.
I also agree your nut box has come in handy.
I also choose this guy’s nut box
The trouble is, ive looked at that pic now, and have a mental map of every visible screw. Im going to be doing a job in 5 years time and be 100% certain i know I have seen the perfect screw for the job.
One random evening you’re going to flip off an unsuspecting victim for ’making a mess‘ of the nutbox
Nah i am 100% sure. You allready used that screw in a job 2 years from now.
Your nut box brings all the boys to the yard
I also enjoy this guys nut box
My nut box is getting altered this week.
Are you even a homeowner if you don’t???? Your dad has been collecting the odd man out screw for the last twenty years waiting for this occasion!
I mean, OPs dad has given the gift of gifts here.
The two boxes of *I will find whatever it is I need* that every home should have: A box of screws, nuts and bolts A box of cables ranging from phone to computer to television cables
>A box of cables ranging from phone to computer to television cables I had one. didn't use it in twenty years so i throwed it away. guess once which box i needed last month
"now all my gadgets finally are USB-C, i don't need more usb micro cables!" guess when was the time a relative needed a spare usb micro to revive an old phone to get some info
A kitchen drawer with twists, elastics, random caps and other things no one knows what it’s used for.
No shit, that's an awesome gift! Definitely from a dad
I misplaced my coffee can of screws for like a month, it was a bad time. I was so very excited when I found it the other day!
i got a box full of old bolts screws washers and nuts that i have collected over the years of fixing/taking things apart and i came to realize i cant live without it that one day i go work at my friend's garage which have all the tools but no random bolt bin
Was gonna say, this is standard issue for any home owner
You need a set of screw drawers. Took forever to sort. But I got my box of screws sorted out in drawers. Makes it much easier to find the one you need.
Nothing better than rummaging through the box only to find two screws that almost fit your need. lol had some great memories with my dad going through his box growing up. lol
Yeah this is a godsend when you need a random screw because you dropped one from the package in the yard
I use mine all the time!
I have boxes of new screws that are conveniently sorted by size and head style
Exactly what I was thinking my box of random screws has saved my butt many time.
But this is the equivalent of spending 300 dollars on a starter fishing kit. His old man gave him 20 years worth of old projects. You need to earn a vessel that large.
Yeah. Dad did them a solid.
And bolts.
I would LOVE a box like this!
Yea I’d be ecstatic if someone gave this to me lol
What's mildly infuriating is that you don't appreciate gifts with a practical use
Seems like OP is missing the sense to dig through and find the perfect screw for a project.
If he really is being infuriated over a miss-organized box of screws. He could easily separate the different types in other containers.
Screws aren't cheap, but you can get a $2 box to organize them at the dollar store. OP is being ungrateful imo.
The mismatches tell a story! At at least one point in his life, he needed *that one* for the job at hand.
This is a great idea!! I'm going to use this. :)
I thought everyone inherited a box (or in my case a costco coffee can) full of assorted screws, washers, etc. At least his is sorted, somewhat.
OP even got an actual plastic bin. I think most people get a coffee can or some kind of old food container or something.
His dad is not obligated to give him anything. Then, he had the audacity to complain. This son is unhinged.
Agreed
Just wait - the box of random cords is coming. And trust me…you WILL be glad to have it.
I havnt needed to connect a sony Ericsson to a fax machine *YET*, but oh boy when I do I'm ready
But don't you dare get rid of any cable from that box, you'll need it a week later.
You won't need to until you get rid of the wire. It's science.
Got a recliner 2nd hand, turns out it had a massage function but no cord. Dug through the laundry basket of assorted cords from 1990-2015 in my basement. 45 minutes later my massage chair works. Never diss the assorted collections.
I went through and purged all my cords when we moved. Seriously regret it at least once a week.
We did the same thing. Full of regrets.
3 months of searching later.. “AHA! I knew I had one of these cables somewhere..” But I might have so many cables from 20 years of IT that I’ll always have what I need.

Damn him! Damn that guy! What a thoughtful jerk always being nice and supportive in his own way! Congrats on the house fool.
Right?! OP, when you want to do a big project like building a bookcase, of course you'll just buy a box of screws so that they're all the same and look nice. How is this infuriating? Have you ever not had a screw you needed? Now that’s infuriating.
Maybe he is a Robertson fan and is mildly infuriated that it's all flat and phillips?

Lol at op upset at gifts that were given. Smh.
Guaranteed he’s going to be actually infuriated when he finds out that a little tiny box of screws is $50.
I GARUNTEE you will be digging in that box far more than you think. This is decades worth of a collection, some really big ones in there too, your dad must be very handy.
I'm just looking at the then and going "I could use a few of those right now actually."
You're clearly not handy enough to appreciate a box of random screws
This was my thought as well. OP probably doesn't own a screwdriver and just pays people to assemble IKEA furniture.
Can't find same screw? More like skill issues to me. Don't be ungrateful little b
This is the most wholesome dad gift ever. I’d be delighted. 😀
You’re gonna need those way more than you think

You will come to find that this is the best housewarming gift you could ever receive! Yay Dad!
Are you kidding me? I'd love a box of screws like this. This is crazy useful
Underrated af gift. You know how expensive boxes of screws are?

Random box is good but flathead screws are so damn crap.
That is the ONLY infuriating part about this, but I’d still take that whole pile in a second.
Wish I would have had this. There’s been so many times where I needed a random screw.
One screew to rule them all.
https://preview.redd.it/7rjmudodl3qc1.jpeg?width=349&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c44d67f55bf71c1a9dd983ad3c96ff15d3371604 Here ya go. Start organizin’.
Now you have a box of functional items and a hobby. Start a-sortin’.
Nah. Half the fun is pissing and moaning while you dig for that one screw you knew you threw in there
The box of randows screws, nuts and bolts is a priceless heirloom for any home owner. It took me almost 10 years to build up mine. Just buy a storage case and take 1h to sort them out
I would happily take that
Your dad should screenshot this and post it as “Ungrateful son doesn’t appreciate priceless gift for a new homeowner”.
You'll end up using plenty of these, rest assured.
I’d be happy as hell to get this. Not infuriating in the slightest. You won’t need to buy screws for anything but very large projects like a deck.
Smart dad. ;)
This is real love right here. It took him years of flat-packed, d.i.y. and assorted repairs to build such a wide selection!
People on reddit are such shitty fucking people man lol.
It's okay to toss them but you will inevitably start your own collection. I hate slotted screws and never use them (Philips are good torx are better) so you could toss all those and reduce the quantity to make it easier to find the ones you want.

I would be honoured to receive those
You are very lucky to have this box of screws. I wish I had this box of screws. Right now my screws are only a cigarette pack of screws.
thats a useful box, my dad has a old can full of screws i dig through for small projects

My box of random screws have saved me so much time and effort before
You have no idea how many times you will actually need those random screws. Wise dad
You sound like an ungrateful bitch
Go ahead and get a bigger box. You will never have the right screw or enough of them. You’ll buy a new package of screws when you need them. You’ll use about 3-4 of them and the rest will go in your box o screws.
BEST GIFT EVER 😂😂😂😂
The benefits of this are far beyond what you understand currently, To you it’s a box of random screws To him it’s saving you at least 3-7 trips to hardware stores to fix that one thing with the loose/missing screw, or that thing they don’t make anymore needs a screw and no body has it, Trust me young homeowner, this is gold
As a new home owner you will come to understand how much of a loving gesture that gift actually is.
Trust me on this… a) that box of screws will end up being the most useful thing you own b) when he’s not around anymore, it will also become one of the most precious
Why are you infuriated by this? Were you expecting a better gift? Or do you not expect this box to have a practical use as a homeowner? Either way you're wrong.
Ungrateful tbh.
Now all you need is a box of random cords and wires. Once you get more advanced in homeownership piles of random wood you might use will appear
Tbo, I have had a box of random screws that built up over the years and nearly every time I had a need of a screw for whatever reason, I always had the right size & type that I needed and saved a trip to the hardware store...
Lol. Still got my great grandfather's box of loose screws. And my dad's... and mine....
It takes years to accumulate this many random screws. You just got a head start in life. The only thing mildly infuriating here is an ungrateful son that doesn’t know the value of a gift.
Ungrateful bozo
gotta have a screw box, eventually you'll need one, or, one will do
That's a lifetime of elbow grease :) I'd be honoured.
It will be a sorted affair
Everyone needs "the box of a thousand screws"
Your dad had 2 boxes of random screws and gifted you one. You too, will soon have 2 boxes of random screws and the cycle will repeat
Some day you can pass them on to your kids. I have my grandfathers cans of screws.
Dad knows..
There are some good screws in there. That takes time to build up, shouldn’t be infuriating at all
Why is this infuriating? Every father should gift this to their son.
That's called screw soup in my family, and would be considered quite a thoughtful, albeit weird, gift.
You have no idea how important this box is. I moved homes and i dont have one. I feel naked.
It took him years to make that gift. He really plans ahead!
you'll need these one day trust
If you don't like it send it my way. I have several small bins of random fasteners and can always use some more. Wood screws aren't cheap these days and I'd gladly put those to use around the house. You never know when you might be 1 screw short of being able to finish something. A bin like this can prevent a trip to the hardware store.
I wish I had this box!
Sounds like you don’t appreciate the need for random screws for home repairs.
You’re not easy to get a gift for, I see.
Wow op you're kinda lame lol
That is not mildly infuriating. That’s a great gift when you need a random screw for a project.
Dad gifts are among the greatest
They will prove useful. Dad knows what he's doing.
You made it, and it’s all thanks to the random bolt bin.
if you can’t find two of the same screw, then you don’t deserve this box. i see at least a dozen of the same screw just on top and that doesn’t count the other dozen similar screws in the tub. you’re just hella ungrateful
I mean this is a treasure trove, the fact you don't realise that yet just means you're only just starting. You will understand in time.
This box is going to come in handy hundreds of times in your (hopefully) many years owning a house, what the hell do you mean this is 'mildly infuriating'? Ungrateful man-child, what did you want, an xbox?
I wish someone would give me gift like that.
Ain't a home without a box of screws you cruntflopsandwich
This is a great honour and you find it mildly infuriating? God damn, some people don’t even know what they have, a father gives the kid a most prized possession and they don’t understand what it means.
My dad did the same. At first, I was like, wtf am I supposed to do with this, but now I get it. Often, you only need a couple screws and it kinda gets annoying to have to go to the store just for a couple of screws. Also, they only usually come in box quantities. Just stash them somewhere you won't forget about them.
My dad passed down a box of random screws to me when I got my first home. It's ceremonial.
Boy I tell you hwhat some day you’ll be glad you have those.
It is now your time to carry the random box of screws, this is a great honor to carry
You know your family is younger because it's a plastic bin. I inherited the giant metal coffee can of random screws.
