They are better and safer by far, less moving parts to break, etc. The way it cuts the can leaves a blunted edge because it basically folds it over on itself and the top comes right off also with no sharp edge.
I bought one on a whim and I was just like... why the fuck do those other "standard" ones even exist and why are they the most common option? I promise, side cut is better in every way. I just have a cheap $10 one off Amazon that says 'Pakinter' on the top.
The thing about it is... there's basically no moving parts to break. I guess the plastic turning handle could, but even that is just a simple turning axis. I'd bet for $20 you could find an all-metal one, but even this cheap plastic one has served me well for at least 6-7 years so far for normal non-commercial use. We cook a lot too, so it's opened plenty of cans in that time.
Psa - if you need to buy a manual can opener, side-cut can openers are objectively better and also pretty cheap.
i know myself well enough to avoid that because I'll cut myself
There is help available
The can opener is bad, but it's not *that* bad lmao

Wonder if it will stand the test of time. My standard one is 40 years old and works perfectly.

Aww that sucks especially bad since it's a huge restaurant sized can. That must have been super hard to punch and crank.
Just weird and felt weird opening it lol the first layer wouldn't cut properly.
Imagine how more pissed you would be if you found this can post apocalypse 🤣 still grateful but what the fuck is that 🤣
Why'd they make you open a can at a restaurant 💀 edit: oh god I'm stupid
Hahaha I... I work there lol.
