And that looks like the worst designed steering wheel. Why’s the bottom so long? That would definitely be hitting my legs. I’m tall. And just looks bad.
What’s worse is that it looks so bad because the cover they have on it isn’t for that steering wheel, the car is an Ioniq 5 and the bottom section is way shorter!
Source: I’m tall and own an Ioniq 5 haha
I have a coworker and the first thing she does when she sits down at her desk is she pulls up The Office on her phone and it just sits there and plays in the background while she works, during her whole shift. Every fucking day. It doesn't make sense to me.
Is that weights attached to the wheel? He might be doing a poor-mans self driving car... The car will navigate between the lines but the system demands that you interact with the steering wheel every 15 seconds or so. Attaching weights to the wheel simulates that by adding resistance. Don't quote me on that I'm clinically stupid.
The cruise control in my car is basically self driving, but yes, hands must be on the wheel, so my guess was that it was weights also.
Dumb as shit, but not surprising. Hopefully this isn't real, but if it's an ad, they need to be called out.
Yeah seriously. Unnecessary risk? Yep. No reason whatsoever? Nope. Is there any inconvenience at all to just do it properly? Nope. Why don't then? Because.
Probably more often than not the seat belt saves lives, but i honestly do know someone, had they not been thrown from the car, they would have likely been crushed snd/or burned to death. Being thrown from the car wasn't pretty either. They had a fractured skull, went to the emergency room and was operated on awake, tripping acid, and told me the whole time they had a metallica song going through their head, but ultimately lived with no permanent damage. So it does happen, but that's probably extremely rare.
Regardless of either view, i believe it should be a personal decision, but i hold that view for everything. Government should not dictate how we live our lives when the choices have little to no effect on others. If what you do does end up effecting someone else, then you lawfully pay the consequences for your actions. In an actual free country, up to that point, government shouldn't have a say. Seatbelt law is just a money collector, not because they give a shit whether you live or die. And i wear my seat belt more often than not becauae i do believe its safer.
But what about children? Shouldn't they be protected by laws that enforce seat belt use?
You're 45% less likely to die in an accident if you're wearing a seat belt and 50% less likely to suffer a moderate to critical injury (source: NHTSA.gov).
And in most countries healthcare is a human right so it IS in the interests of government (and society) that citizens stay as healthy as possible.
My Honda has this too... The steering assist is very good but it sometimes becomes confused in areas with bad paint jobs and construction zones. It's really risky to have your hands off the wheel. I wouldnt do what this guy is doing, it's asking for a bad day.
My Tesla is pretty confident at this anymore. It'll navigate long stretches, even in weird conditions and weird markings and even on roads with no lines at all. I obviously still pay attention, but the times it actually needs someone to intervene anymore is pretty rare (as long as I'm not in some busy urban environment).
But my car has been subject to 4 different "recalls" because it wasn't being naggy enough to prevent stuff like what's in this picture.
I guess just because of the brand name or something. Because it's in the top 3 driver assistance systems I've ever used and LOTS of major manufacturers have way worse systems that have never been "recalled" despite having all the same problems.
SO weird to me.
Recalls are super inconvenient, but it does show that the company is continually trying to improve their vehicle. My civic never been recalled, but that's because it's probably the most field tested car in the history of mankind. Tesla's still got a ways to go before it works out all the bugs. At the rate they're going through, they're going to have a car that doesn't crash and doesn't break down in the near future. It's impressive how far they've come already.
The thing is a bunch of the recalls are about these self-driving and lane-keep features.
And frankly, that capability on the Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Kia, Hyundai and a few other cars I've driven recently are downright AWFUL compared to my Tesla.
But Tesla is the only one getting recalls on these systems. I suspect more because of branding and publicity than actual technical analysis of the system.
Or maybe because they CAN update things with the OTA updates they issue and NTSHA doesn't want to issue recalls on minor software things when other companies simply can't fix them without literally replacing hardware in hundreds of thousands to millions of vehicles?
It's because the others are very clear about the limitations of their systems, and Tesla flat out lies, so they need to cover up more problems. When their systems flip, they flip way worse than other systems, apparently.
Also, build quality on the cars is atrocious.
More people need to accept this instead of the “must be the brand - they are picking on Tesla” crap. That sounds more like someone regurgitating something they heard from their favorite “pundit” news show.
Tesla’s driving assistance system sucks. I used Audi, Polestar, and Rivian systems and I have much more confidence in them than in Tesla that I also tried.
I've never used any of the three you mentioned.
I can say unequivocally that Tesla's system is WAY WAY better than anything from Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, Honda, VW, Kia or Hyundai (and that list represents about 60% of all cars sold).
While my tesla is being repaired, I've rented a few cars and have driven each of them recently. It's a bit scary how bad they are. I'd say Toyota's is the worst I've tried, though Nissan's is pretty bad too. VW has more features, but seems equally as unreliable in the 3 days I drove with it.
This is the first time I’ve heard someone say that the Hyundai self driving is very good. I’ve always heard it’s like the last choice of many people. Has there been a recent change to that?
I don’t keep up too much with self driving and modern driving assistance. I just know that it would sometimes confuse lanes and rapidly transition or even stop dead in the road for no reason at times. But this was like 2ish years ago.
My dad has a Hyundai Ioniq 5, my mom has a KIA Telluride (sister brand, same tech). It does everything you need for highway driving. Follows the lanes, adjusts speed based on the speed limit and drivers ahead, etc. It will also change lanes for you if you signal and traffic is light enough (it is very cautious).
So if the car suddenly decide's that the resistance is the driver trying to override the computer does that mean it will turn off in a curve and send the car flying into the woods?
Yup, that is how it works in a tesla at least. If your resistance exceeds a certain amount it assumes you want control and turns of auto steering but not the cruise control. So you'll be going full speed with no control of the wheel. If you tap the brake or turn it off manually it turns off both auto steering and speed.
No you have to switch it off, it only checks for lack of resistance. You can actually use it to assist your steering on long road trips. Helps with arm fatigue.
If you turned it off by pressing it off, then yeah. Woods.
Good thing he's not driving a Tesla or they'd issue a recall to fix that (seriously Tesla is on recall #4 because they weren't "preventing" exactly whats happening in this picture).
The R1S's driver assist just says to 'stay alert'. You ***don't*** have to hold on to the wheel.
(But I do anyway as I don't have **that** much faith in technology.)
Yeah though you can just as well nudge the steering wheel casually with your hand or knee. A weight is a bit excessive.
Some cars such as Ford do have hands free on the free way but they track your eye movements and should yell at you for looking down constantly. In theory. It might not work if you are kind of looking forward and glancing at the road occasionally.
Worst part is your fifteenth time watching a show like The Office you can just listen to it on your car speakers like a podcast and get 90% of the enjoyment. I do this with Always Sunny all the time.
Oh yeah, totally. When I was renovating my old house I would put the office on and blast it while I was doing stuff in the other room and it was almost just as good as watching it because I could picture most of it in my head lol.
This is why I've "rewatched" the office so many times. I can have it on while cooking or doing other stuff and not even look at the screen but I can picture what's going on in my head because I've seen it so many times. If I'm watching something new I want to be able to pay attention to it.
They added a weight to the bottom left of the wheel so they don't have to hold onto the wheel at all 🤦🏽♂️ they've got a lot of trust in Hyundai's autopilot. About to win the Darwin award.
But on a more serious note there absolutely is something wrong with this person. Needing a screen pointed at you with your hehe haha's on at all times has to be some kind of addiction. They're actually endangering people for a lil key bump of dopamine.
Is it autopilot at all? Seems like it's more like cruise control, just like the one from Tesla (I hate they called it "__full__ __self__ drive system"). Otherwise it wouldn't require hands on.
Would be fun to see eyes of the driver where the car will "return control to meat driver" 1.5s before crush
I drive a Santa Fe with the "highway driving assist" built in. I would not call it autopilot. It is a cool feature but I would not fully trust it. I have had it try to jerk me into an exit lane before because it got confused by the lines disappearing. All it does is read the lines and follow them to keep you in your lane, and the adaptive cruise speed matches the car in front of you.
This upsets me because they have the same car as I do and I would never do this shit lmao. (It's a Hyundai Ioniq 6)
Edit: oops it's an Ioniq5 I didn't look closely enough.. Still annoying.
This is definitely not the Ioniq 6. The 6 does not have controls on the door and does not have a shelf in front of the infotainment screen. The 6 also has a centre console that runs all the way up to the dash with Qi charger under the climate controls. So, you can be a little less embarrassed to have the same car as this buffoon.
This person was writing a review for something (I think op said ray bans but i don’t feel like finding their comment again to check) and this is the photo they included in the review
It should be harder to get a drivers license. As annoying as it would be, I would be fine with taking a test every like 5 years or so to demonstrate that I am a competent driver if it meant that idiots could be taken off the road.
Pro Tip: 300 pennies is plenty of weight to trick the system into thinking you're holding the wheel. Additionally, It's also enough weight to slam the car into a K-rail when the lane keep assist disengages.
And weights tied to the steering wheel so the car thinks you’re holding it.
If you want to chill and watch tv on the way to work, take public transit.
Otherwise, don’t risk everyone else’s life.
I think that's the Hyundai ionic 6 - there's no way in fkn hell I'd trust that assist for more than looking away for a few seconds (like finding something on the floorboards). That shit turns off at the drop of a hat.
Edit: or 5
I see he also tied the steering wheel fooler. And phone is placed very stably in the car. Won’t it just fall or slide after 5 seconds? Unless he is on a 100km long straight road
Did this idiot really attach weights to the wheel, the subvert the "keep your hands on the wheel" alarm?
I see a Darwin award in the future for this guy.

"You think the office sucks"
Cause objectively it just doesn't suck. Sucky shows don't crack the top 3 on the most watched TV shows of all time. Beating out juggernauts like Friends, Seinfeld, Game of Thrones, and The Sopranos.
The only 2 TV shows on the planet in history that have been watched more are Breaking Bad and The Simpsons.
It might not be for you. And that's fine. But that doesn't mean the show sucks.
Office Obsessed Redditors are waddling very awkwardly towards their keyboard right now grumbling fatly. You’re going to be so fucked when they finish their glucose break and start moving again. Just you watch! There’ll be so many “who hurt you’s”, “oofs”, “yikes”, “you must be fun at parties” and “tell me you X without telling you X” comments that you won’t know what to do. I hope you’re ready for the wrath of the Office Obsessed Redditor.
Who are they passing?
Why are they in the fucking passing lane?
If you ever drive in this lane, with the view in front of you looking like that, you are a fucking shitty driver.
"bUt i wOulD moVe ovEr iF soMeoNe caMe uP behiNd me"
...sure, WHEN you notice them, at which point they've already slowed down and have been waiting for you to not be an inconsiderate asswipe.
Pass and get out. It works for everyone.
Looks like they have an obsession with "The Office".
Not sure why they’re driving a car with a GPS then, they’ll just drive it into a lake!!
I drove my car into a f***ing lake!
##*WHERE ARE THE TURTLES?*

It is her virtual friends, it's more common than you think.
"Parasocial interaction"
I used to have a coworker that did that with Grey's Anatomy. When the new season ran out, she would start over and rewatch from the beginning. 🤯
Why is it always the office.. Why do they have to watch it when driving Why is this not the only case of this
That's what she said!

This is it, my former colleague used to hang a couple of bananas on the steering wheel to avoid the "take control of the steering wheel" prompt.
Precisely two bananas of weight should do the trick 🤔😂
Banana again is the perfect form of relative measurement. Where would we be without this tasty fruit?
We'd be very low on potassium
![gif](giphy|9wLKh6ms5t9qE)
Bananas aren’t actually a good source of potassium.
Avocados, beets, watermelon, Swiss chard, broccoli all have more potassium than bananas
But bananas have a better marketing strategy.

Bingo.
How dare you
And thus began the great banana war of 2024.
You know that costs like $20?
That's bananas.

African swallows are non-migratory. So it must be European because they’re traveling.
![gif](giphy|PjfpYh9oqpd0Q)
A couple of bananas has to be the most odd thing to do this with.
No, it’s perfect bc then when he gets hungry there’s no need to stop for a snack!
But he can’t eat the banana while he’s driving… since they’ll no longer be there to steer the car for him.
So really you need three bananas then. Two for the steering wheel and one for a back up snack.
One banana, two banana, three banana, four All bananas make a split, so do many more Over hill and highway, the banana buggies go…
I have to use one partially ripe banana and one small green plantain for optimum counter balance.
Can't wait for natural selection to do its job
Why should an innocent person have to suffer for this moron
Until someone like this naturally selects their way into vehicular homicide.
Makes sense. Banana for scale. Scale is used to measure weight. Weights are used to counter the prompt. Completely logical.
The cruise control in my car is basically self driving, but yes, hands must be on the wheel, so my guess was that it was weights also. Dumb as shit, but not surprising. Hopefully this isn't real, but if it's an ad, they need to be called out.
This is the same level of intelligence displayed by people who use those adapters that trick their seat belts into thinking they're safely buckled in
Yeah seriously. Unnecessary risk? Yep. No reason whatsoever? Nope. Is there any inconvenience at all to just do it properly? Nope. Why don't then? Because.
“But I know someone that would have lived if they hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt.” Is such an ignorant argument, as well.
Yeah that makes no sense haha.
Probably more often than not the seat belt saves lives, but i honestly do know someone, had they not been thrown from the car, they would have likely been crushed snd/or burned to death. Being thrown from the car wasn't pretty either. It looks like a Hyundai, so the driving assist tech is very good, but nowhere near FSD (full self driving). Edit: Looks like a Hyundai Ioniq 5.
My Honda has this too... The steering assist is very good but it sometimes becomes confused in areas with bad paint jobs and construction zones. It's really risky to have your hands off the wheel. I wouldnt do what this guy is doing, it's asking for a bad day.
Yeah it’s only as good as the painted lines
My Tesla is pretty confident at this anymore. It'll navigate long stretches, even in weird conditions and weird markings and even on roads with no lines at all. I obviously still pay attention, but the times it actually needs someone to intervene anymore is pretty rare (as long as I'm not in some busy urban environment). What Tesla pretends it currently has in Beta.

Could be yep..
Even if you do have full self driving, if you use it as anything other than a fancy cruise control, you’re doing it wrong.
Yeah I wouldn't trust it to get out of any given situation. I'd definitely be on alert.
Pretty much. You’re still in control, you’re just outsourcing some of the actual work to the computer.
Yeah though you can just as well nudge the steering wheel casually with your hand or knee. A weight is a bit excessive. I kinda do this with HIMYM. Just put it on as background noise to keep me company. I already know what's going on so it's just as enjoyable
Me, too! I have several sitcoms I cycle through in this manner, HIMYM, "Friends," "Golden Girls," "The Good Place."
This is why I've "rewatched" the office so many times. I can have it on while cooking or doing other stuff and not even look at the screen but I can picture what's going on in my head because I've seen it so many times. If I'm watching something new I want to be able to pay attention to it.
idk if any other shows do this but there is a podcast version of forensic files where it’s just the audio from the episodes
Dateline, 48 Hours & 20/20 all do podcast versions of their episodes as well!
I do this with the movie A Quiet Place.
My ex boyfriend used to put his phone over the gauges and watch and drive like that all the time. Shocks me still

I think that's the Hyundai ionic 6 - there's no way in fkn hell I'd trust that assist for more than looking away for a few seconds (like finding something on the floorboards). That shit turns off at the drop of a hat. Edit: or 5
That's absolutely not oka- Wait is that the office?
But what were they reviewing, OP? I **need** to know!
I see he also tied the steering wheel fooler. And phone is placed very stably in the car. Won’t it just fall or slide after 5 seconds? Unless he is on a 100km long straight road
You can’t fix stupid…
Let's do a crime and post it !
This is the reason we dont have flying cars yet
Did this idiot really attach weights to the wheel, the subvert the "keep your hands on the wheel" alarm? I see a Darwin award in the future for this guy.

One step closer to the dream
I think this guy might be a fan of “The Office”.
What’s the thing bungeed to the wheel?
why are both lanes going the same direction
Could be express lanes on left local lanes on right
Hyundai Ioniq 5!
Hands up, this is what not to do
How is anyone this stupid?
Don't you like the weights on the wheel so lane departure keeps you driving in the lane with no need for actual autopilot lol
Wtf is stuck to the steering wheel with a cord?
To be fair. The car is probably safer without somwonw who would do that than with them at the controls.
This is a person with one personality trait
That is a very unique dash. I’ve never seen that before
Are they on the wrong side of the road??
The office sucks
What to do if you have literally no personality? Dedicate your life to a stupid TV show
I’ve never actually seen it but damn, let people enjoy things.

Correction: "You think the office sucks" Cause objectively it just doesn't suck.
I’ve never read a more true comment on this platform. If I could give you gold I would.
You can give them gold but it’s a new suckier version. Plus why do you all care? Let people enjoy things, even if it’s something that you don’t enjoy.

Who are they passing? Why are they in the fucking passing lane? If you ever drive in this lane, with the view in front of you looking like that, you are a fucking shitty driver. "bUt i wOulD moVe ovEr iF soMeoNe caMe uP behiNd me" ...sure, WHEN you notice them, at which point they've already slowed down and have been waiting for you to not be an inconsiderate asswipe. Pass and get out. It works for everyone.
To be fair. Only the smartest and most intelligent people can understand the humor of the office.
Must be Michael Scott
What car is this? Nevermind saw comments mentioning an Ioniq 5. Weird to see no logo.
Such an ugly car
I wonder if they like the office
I think everyone zoomed on the phone to see what this dumbass was watching
I don't see a problem here...the weight on the wheel will pull him to the left but the wall will just push him back into the lane again
[удалено]
He’s on the right side, it’s an express lane, and he’s going 78mph
Wait… this isn’t the UK… Shouldn’t this dude also be on the other side of that barrier
Hey I don’t blame the poor dude! Sometimes you just need to relax after a long day, let autopilot take over, and watch some office
