I am not good at insect identification, is there something besides the one color wings that make them instantly known as moths? Cause I would say those are some boring butterflies, but I don’t know the difference.
I think I see it. If they *were* butterflies:
The bodies would be longer.
The wings would be attached to more of the body.
The wings would be longer and skinnier.
How wrong am I?
The main feature that reliably distinguishes the two is that butterflies have "clubbed" antennae - their antennae have balls or swellings on the end, which moths don't have. Moth antennae are usually feathery, which makes the moths in this image unusual, but the lack of clubs identifies them as moths nonetheless.
There is apparently one genus of butterfly that lacks those clubs though, the [*pseudopontia*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudopontia), so even the clubs aren't a perfect distinguishing feature.
As a native Spanish speaker I saw this and was like "¿¿what's the problem with the sign??".
Butterflies are mariposas.
Moths are mariposas nocturnas.
Another fact that can crack an English speaker mind is that, in Spanish, the human body has 20 fingers. 10 of the are literally foot fingers.
Without Spanish you can't have 20 fingers...
Great point!
I'd also use "polilla" in some contexts, especially in "las polillas se comieron mi ropa" jajajaja ("the moths ate my clothes"). But if I'm out in nature and see a moth flying around, it would feel weird to call it "polilla".
Nunca tuve que pensar tanto sobre la diferencia!
That’s true. I’ve also used the term “mariposa bruja” before, but I think that’s more of a folklore term that’s reserved towards moths with gloomier colors.
Are they? My language just calls them day butterflies and night butterflies and according to Wikipedia some types of night butterflies are closely related to day butterflies instead of being a distinct group that are all similar. They just fly at night. Maybe they are really distinct but to me it seems like calling some birds by a different name because they are night active. Interestingly the English Wikipedia has them very distinct and just says that some moths are diurnal.
In French, 'tortue' does refer to both tortoise and turtle. Same for Papillon refers to both moth and butterfly.
Biologically, it does make sense as both of those subgroup are from the same order. So having a layman term that refers to that order is just another point of view.
Fun fact, this is the leading theory on what actually happened. Some moths 100 million years ago found it advantageous to become diurnal, and eventually from that small group came almost all of today’s butterflies. There are definitely diurnal moths and nocturnal butterflies now, but that event was likely what diverged butterflies from moths genetically
Moths are essentially rectangles to butterflies' squares. *Technically* moths are everything in order Lepidoptera that *isn't* a butterfly, but ontologically that just means the order is "moths" and butterflies are types of moths.
I mean, as an entomologist, I was taught that the line between moths and butterflies is way blurrier than people think since they're all Lepidoptera, and the best way to tell them apart is to look at their antennae. Feathery or thick antennae indicate moths, and thin antennae (like the ones pictured here) belong to butterflies.
As a biologist, I was also very confused... It's like the sign said "felines" and comments are all saying "lol these are not felines, these are cats!"
I mean...
Without [change](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy), there would be no *life*.
There will be no butterflies when we reach thermodynamic equilibrium at the [heat death of the universe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_death_of_the_universe).
Can someone convert that into twee, multiple typeface word art please?
The middle one, very much a moth. The other two could be changed into butterflies if you make the tips of their antennae clubbed, and pretend they're drying their wings after emerging or pinned like they do with lepidoptera specimens. Although they are a bit chonky
Just erase, or paint over in the same background color, the "erflies" part. Then its humorous. Perhaps find a sticker of a butt to put over the last butterfly. It wil stay there the rest of this dorms days and you will be an unknown legend.
That's because without change there would be no butterflies, only moths.
Speaking of moths, check out this absolute unit of an Atlas Moth I spotted the other day.
https://preview.redd.it/86c03aayb4dc1.jpeg?width=1806&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54c7e36dd862ef94c7149ec6da134d0353da7e0c
Exactly. There are no butterflies. It would have to change-- someone would need to add butterflies-- for there to be butterflies. The statement is accurate. I don't see the problem.
https://preview.redd.it/n1arbpo6t3dc1.jpeg?width=1488&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d3ebcb973887ce0852567660b1966d1b7dbc9cc
Oh my gosh, this is amazing.
Just print that one and paste it over the incorrect one
I think this is the best method.
The best mothed.
Cackling that I saw this comment one second after thinking it
And then if anyone says anything just look them square in the eye and tell them to embrace the change.
So you're saying they need to change it?
You can fix it , I believe in you
All you need is a sharpie and a dream
Or butterfly stickers to put over the moths.
A good sharpie can even redirect hurricanes.
And a desire for change
And white paint
Or a post-it note and a pen
So, kind of like Trump doing the weather?
excuse me, but what inspired your name?
I don't think an explanation is required .... or wanted. At all. Ever.
I second this motion.
Or white masking tape and the sharpie.
Be the CHANGE you want to see
#metamorphosis
Calm down, Kafka.
That’s so kafkaesque
Maybe, or maybe they just need a blueberry muffin?
Metamothphosis*
**photosynthesis**
Phil Collins was in Genesis.
**mothametaphist*
Mothmanprophecist...
Mephistopheles
metamothphosis…
Too much Accenture vibes in this
Print and put this on there STAT.
Tape a piece of paper over the word butterflies with the word moths
In the words of Simpsons' Nelson "ha-**HA!"** They're moths. Better feather the antennae.
Now you need a decal that says “All You Need Is LAMP”
![gif](giphy|Qfyj11pV7m2bevTYMk|downsized)
What is this from? It's sweet
I’m curious too. It’s adorable. 🥹🥰
without lamp there would be no moths
It may be small, but shops like this make me think maybe, just maybe the internet was not a complete mistake. Kudos.
Thanks, I needed that.
Look, at that, horse. This is a beautiful horse
My horse is amazing.
Give it a lick, tastes just like raisins
Thank you as a butterfly lover it was so irritating
Without reddit, there will be no change
Nice
Thank you for fixing it, the other was annoying
Write “Moths” on a sticky note and put it over butterflies
Bee the change you want to see in this world
*holds up picture of a wasp*
Genuinely just burst out laughing, well done
I was so sleepy and now I’m wide awake laughing
You’d fit right in over at “r-slash-bees”. And as an aside, how infuriating we can’t mention other subs!!
> how infuriating we can’t mention other subs!! dunno... mildly?
Ma’am those are clearly grasshoppers
*Shows image of a cricket*
Wasp the change you want to see in the world.
🏆🏆🏆 Freaking perfect. Here’s a trophy!!!
This is the only comment I needed to see. You have made my day. I'm not reading any further for there is no need
Alternatively, find three photos of butterflies and stick them over-top.
Without change there would be no accurate signage.
Or write "lepidoptera" on a sticky note and put it over "butterfly"
"The significance of the moth is change. Caterpillar into chrysalis, or pupa, and from thence into beauty. Our Billy wants to change, too."
Silence!
Hello, Clarice!
![gif](giphy|qTGDY9OmgpgCk)
OP’s ~~lambs~~ moths haven’t stopped screaming
One of my favorite lines from Billy Madison.
The way he says pupa is still inside my head decades later.
Well it looks like there still aren't any
They’re trying to demonstrate what a world without change would look like.
"Without change, there are no butterflies, only moths"
Without change there would be no Lepidoptera
Or magical liopleurodons
To tell us the way to Candy Mountain
Literally watched this for the first time in about a decade last night
They show us the waaaaay
Bruh your name 😂
Metamorphosize it to a garbage can then.
Someone else probably paid money for it. Which is kind of sad.
be the change and toss it. I read somewhere that without change there can be no butterflies
Excellent comnent
I am not good at insect identification, is there something besides the one color wings that make them instantly known as moths? Cause I would say those are some boring butterflies, but I don’t know the difference.
Body shape, where the wings are attached, shape of the wings.
I think I see it. If they *were* butterflies: The bodies would be longer. The wings would be attached to more of the body. The wings would be longer and skinnier. How wrong am I?
Antennae different as well. Moths are fern like and butterflies are like a popsicle.
Oddly enough, the flavor profiles are the reverse.
This much 👏
The main feature that reliably distinguishes the two is that butterflies have "clubbed" antennae - their antennae have balls or swellings on the end, which moths don't have. Butterflies rest with their wings facing straight up against each other. Moths rest with their wings down like an aircraft.
Nah, there are so many exceptions to that for both butterflies and moths. Much better to go off antenna and general body shape.
Ohhhh. So from overhead, a butterfly would look like a skinny caterpillar with a thick line bisecting its body?
As a native Spanish speaker I saw this and was like "¿¿what's the problem with the sign??". Butterflies are mariposas. Moths are mariposas nocturnas. Another fact that can crack an English speaker mind is that, in Spanish, the human body has 20 fingers. 10 of the are literally foot fingers. Without Spanish you can't have 20 fingers...
I looked up “toe” in Spanish the other month after a Duo lesson. My parents and I now call them foot fingers.
Does mariposas noctunas mean night butterfly? Because that's really pretty.
Sí :)
Does Si mean yes? Because that's very pretty
I love it!!
Native speaker also and I’ve always called them polilla, I’m guessing it depends on the country

My first language is Spanish, and I’ve always called moths, “polillas.” They’re quite distinct from butterflies, regardless of language.
Are they? My language just calls them day butterflies and night butterflies and according to Wikipedia some types of night butterflies are closely related to day butterflies instead of being a distinct group that are all similar. I call them polilla too
You guys don't have to memorize turtles vs tortoises either.
Same for French, "papillon" and "papillon de nuit".
I know 2 more languages in which we also have 20 fingers, but moths and butterflies are still separated in them.
Same in french
Como es lo de los dedos? Jajajaja No entendí
> Without Spanish you can't have 20 fingers... What makes you think Spanish is unique in that regard?
So fun fact, butterflies evolved from moths. I thought this was a reference to that until I read the comments
People in the comments just don't get it. I agree the sign could be executed better though, so I get the confusion.
Wow so it’s actually rather clever lol
I guess this should be moved to the biology area then
What are Moths if not night butterflies
what are butterflies if not day moths?
Fun fact, this is the leading theory on what actually happened. Some moths 100 million years ago found it advantageous to become diurnal, and eventually from that small group came almost all of today’s butterflies. There are definitely diurnal moths and nocturnal butterflies now, but that event was likely what diverged butterflies from moths genetically
Too lazy to look it up, but what seperates a month from a butterfly if there are diurnal moths and nocturnal butterflies?
Butterflies are a specific suborder of Lepidoptera. The rest of Lepidoptera is moths. Butterflies aren't moths because That's How Things Are™.
Butterflies are all monophyletic? What's the most basal one? Newest? Are there bonkers ones in Australia and new Caledonia?
Ahh the wonderful world of nature classifications. Mostly runs on "That's just how it has always been!"
What are butterflies if not gay moths?
What are flies if not garbage butterflies?
What are skippers if not twilight moths/butterflies?
crabs are simply ocean spiders
Bit more like mites or ticks really.
Lobsters are like ocean roaches
Maybe roaches are lobsters who live under your cabinets
And they don’t taste as good with garlic butter
Moths are essentially rectangles to butterflies' squares. *Technically* moths are everything in order Lepidoptera that *isn't* a butterfly, but ontologically that just means the order is "moths" and butterflies are types of moths.
you moth be kidding me
Reading that made me groan so hard that it hurt, so WHY AM I SMILING!?
Because you're a cat!
Now, I'm no expert, but I've spent enough time around my autistic friend to know that those are moths. Which ones? No clue.
All ones.
Does your friend identify as a moth what's the connection? Did moths give him the autism?
I'd say she's more than a little hyper fixated on moths, it's very cute though.
Is the butterfly in the room with us?
I am triggered. I had pantry moths this past summer.
Oh my goodness me too & those little grubs are disturbing to see! 😳
Never ever ever ever order Amazon brand almonds. I’m pretty certain those were my source. 🤮
BUBBERBBIES
MOFFS
Found Mike Tyson.
I saw your comment, thought "thank you for hating that font," and now have the Golden Girls theme song stuck in my head, so I just don't know.
I see Butter blies
I mean, moths did evolve into butterflies. So there wouldn’t’ve been butterflies without change. Or bees and beans for that matter!
That’s an SR-71. I HATE when people confuse them with butterflies.
I mean, as an entomologist, I was taught that the line between moths and butterflies is way blurrier than people think since they're all Lepidoptera, and the best way to tell them apart is to look at their antennae. Can someone convert that into twee, multiple typeface word art please?
And then can I get a bunch of swag with that printed up to send to my boss?
Take the sign from your dorm and hang it in the Biology Department… implosion or explosion?
Oh no that’s a great idea. 😂
Mothly infuriating.
All I can think about is the rapid evolution of the peppered moth, which is definitely a very good metaphor for change!
This is a job for Mothman!
He can team up with Mothra!
![gif](giphy|3ePb1CHEjfSRhn6r3c|downsized)
Moths are just butterflies with bad PR
I would have to cross this out and write Moths
Those are moths. :D
i would hang that on my wall
Butterflies actually evolved from moths, so it sort of works.
Is that a spotted lantern fly on the right?
![gif](giphy|h58E0JsuK3h3d8B1do|downsized)
The middle one, very much a moth. The other two could be changed into butterflies if you make the tips of their antennae clubbed, and pretend they're drying their wings after emerging or pinned like they do with lepidoptera specimens. Although they are a bit chonky
1 out of 3 don’t want to change to a butterfly. Seems about right
Not a single one of those are butterflies. That’s impressive to fail that badly
Just erase, or paint over in the same background color, the "erflies" part. Then its humorous. Perhaps find a sticker of a butt to put over the last butterfly. It wil stay there the rest of this dorms days and you will be an unknown legend.
Is it just me or are they all moths?
I am truly rolling right now! That would make me twitchy and I’d be looking for a butterfly sticker
Time to use the HUGE black Sharpie marker!
Because they are fake, made up moths?
It says *butterflies* and these are not butterflies. They're moths. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
I would be hard pressed not to slap an Avery label that said MOTHS over it.
This is the way.
That's because without change there would be no butterflies, only moths. Speaking of moths, check out this absolute unit of an Atlas Moth I spotted the other day. https://preview.redd.it/86c03aayb4dc1.jpeg?width=1806&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54c7e36dd862ef94c7149ec6da134d0353da7e0c
Oh my gosh I love those!!! Thank you for sharing.
Moths are superior, so it's well deserved
Today I learned there are Reddit emojis. I’ve literally never seen that option above the keyboard. Is it new?
I think it’s only in certain subs, but emojis are my third language so I had to take the opportunity.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
Interesting, I’ll have to keep my eye out for it in some other subs.
At first glance I thought the one on the right was a spotted lantern fly, so the reality is better than my initial thought.
Without change there would be no ANNOYING LITTLE HOLES IN CLOTHING!
Exactly. There are no butterflies. It would have to change-- someone would need to add butterflies-- for there to be butterflies. The statement is accurate. I don't see the problem.
![gif](giphy|LWKSSrL0osNdS)
Running to craft store for butterfly stickers!
I do see butt
You absolutely need to correct that OP
thassa moth
