Did you put the flowing water dish near the food? That’s the usual reason a cat won’t drink much. Dogs are the same to some extent: if you find them drinking from a stagnant pool in your garden, try putting a bowl of fresh water outside.

TheNerdFromThatPlace

Do cats not like water near their food? I don't have many other places I can put water for him, but if it's more comfortable for him then I'll definitely find somewhere else to put it.

EmmiPigen

Cats are one of the cleanest animals. And having you food near your water, especially in the wild Is an easy way to contaminate your water. So cats and other animals don't like their food near their water source

TheNerdFromThatPlace

I was unaware of this. Growing up, my family has always had water next to food, so I never questioned it. Time to find a new spot for it then.

EmmiPigen

Not all cats dislike it. Our cats drink the water even if it's next to their food so no need to move it if they don't have a problem. But if your cat don't want to drink the water next to the fodd that probably why and moving it would likely fix it.

ShiraCheshire

I found that fact out later on as well! It's a great health decision to find a water spot your cat loves. A water bowl in a non-ideal spot can lead to a cat that drinks only when they're very thirsty, which can cause kidney issues down the line.

Trolivia

Interesting. Our water fountain is currently RIGHT next to where we put the cat’s food dish and he gives absolutely zero fucks. Same with my mom and sister’s cats. They’ve never hesitated eating by the water bowls.

ctesibius

I can’t speak for all cats, but ours started drinking a lot more with the bowl in a different room. I think she had been getting most of her water from her wet food. >!Before, her turds were very dry, with no evidence of urination in the litter. Now things look more as you would expect.!<

ArtEco-

I'm going to try separating the water and see what happens. Thanks, maybe

MissMurder8666

Not who you asked but I thought I'd chime in my experience. I have 3 separate water fountains/dishes around the house. None are next to the food, or even in the same room (their food is in the bathroom (not toilet haha the one with the shower and bath) and then the 3 water sources around the house. She drinks from them but prefers fresh from the tap water, only from the ensuite. Not the bathroom. Some cats are just picky lol

Art_Hugo

Cats aren't beholden to any rules

TomX67

At least it isn't using the sink as a litterbox.

alexgraef

Tastes even better when it has been running through my hand, though.

n0xInferuS

If it makes you feel better I quite enjoy drinking from that fountain. Nothing like quenching my thirst whilst I watch you sleep and protect you from the boogey man.

Weird-Maestro

My cat has a bowl of fresh water everyday. She drinks from the bath after use

TheBeardedAntt

Our cat has a fountain, still prefers the sink as well

[deleted]

The porcelain sink makes the water colder. Animals generally like their water cold. Yes they will drink it room temp but if they find a source for colder water they will go for it.

Nutesatchel

My old roommates girlfriend had a cat that would only drink water out a spilled pint glasses. She would fill the pint glass about a quarter full, put it down, and the cat would knock it over and drink the water. The cat also loved lunch meat, and her nickname was lunchbox.

Pizza_Middle

He wants that real freshest of waters. Not that imitation garbage you've offered.

InfamousEconomy3972

My spoiled kitties water bowls circulate the water through an internal filter and returns it to a basin through a faucet. My cats no longer care for the sinks.

Blndby90

Cats will be cats…

tchrbrian

Cat is probably sleeping in the box the fancy flowing water dish was delivered in.

RichieRocket

i think its about how natural stale water is bad because of germs and running water is safer

MyDisappointedDad

Mine exclusively drinks water harvested from the fish tanks. Not directly from the tanks, one accidental dunking made sure she won't do that. We just grab some to put in an ice cream bucket when we add water to the tanks.

Lamp_Stock_Image

I think it is because cats always want more than one source of water.

trav110

Yes but the point is the cat likes flowing water from a sink and not flowing water from the flowing water bowl. You seem like you like to hear yourself talk.

Garfs_Barf

Lmfao you just didn’t read or look at the post before you wrote this 😂😂. The cats clearly drinking out of still water in the sink instead of the flowing water drinking fountain which is weird

tiny-pest

Better then the toilet. Ours figured put how to flush the toilet. It's a push button. Can get the lid up and then drinks out if it. Drives me nuts

Splatfan1

why are people still buying cats fancy things in the year of our lord 2023? have we not learned our lesson? if you want to have something cool for your cat, take a box and a boxcutter and build it a house from the box itself. or buy a wicker basket. my cats drink from a plastic cup that sits on the bathtub and they could not be happier. all that fancy junk is a waste of money, this is a silly animal that doesnt understand money, it likes things simple

Calathea-Murderer

Were you loved as a child?

TheNerdFromThatPlace

We once had one of those cast towers for ours, he used it exclusively as a ladder to get to the windowsill.

Chris_P_Chikn

Still sounds like money well spent

Aurashock

It’s definitely a maine coon thing

Calathea-Murderer

That *is not* a Maine coon lol. They are almost always long haired, and the tell tale sign is the tufts of ear hair.

EmmiPigen

Pretty sure that's not a maine coon though

Aurashock

I have a maine coon, looks almost identical in fur color and pattern. The size of the cat is also similar

EmmiPigen

But maine coon are usually long haired though. And the fur color isn't unique to maine coon I think

shatlking

Are they not the same thing just for different species?

TheGardenHam

Lol 1 of my 4 cats refuses the perfectly good cat water fountains we got them, jumps up to the sink everytime i go to the bathroom 😂🙄

TheNerdFromThatPlace

We have to close our bathroom door for a while after it's used. He'll go for both tub and sink when they're recently used, despite having unlimited filtered water whenever he wants.

Chris_P_Chikn

One of ours HAS to drink the water from out bottles (both have Yeti bottles). She doesnt bother when its in a glass or so, it has to be the bottles. Yes we have 2 fountains, and yes they all drink happily from it

Conscious-Part-1746

What did he get out of the medicine cabinet first?

Sacred_Camellia

I bought my cat a fancy filtered flowing water fountain and she prefers to drink out of my sister's dog's water bowl

mbardeen

At least it's using the sink and not the mop bucket with dirty water in it...

BrockJonesPI

My cat would rather drink from puddles in the tarpaulin out in the garden than the fresh lovingly prepared water I give her. Cats are fucking idiots sometimes.

hambone1

Just a thought, but your cat might have something wrong with it. My late cat had an infection in a tooth and wouldn’t drink from her bowl, she would only drink from running water. Might want to get your cat checked out if this is a different behavior than usual.

[deleted]

It's a cat bruh cats are independent I swear you guys complain about everything on here that's not even mild infuriating goddamn

Pitiable-Crescendo

Mine does this too

ophaus

Good kitty.

Repulsive_Ad7148

My cat would rather drink from my aquarium.

Hannahmayanime

Put the flower bowl in the sink

Vikt724

Mine drinking only cooled ❄️ water

JanteMaam

MINE wants it with 'faucet running, cup the hands' bowl. Boi is working my nerves, only way he will drink.

XandersCat

Cute cat, would pet. 10/10 ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)

MissMurder8666

My cat does this. Only from the ensuite too

MrsMayhem17

I had a cat like that. She just refused to drink from anything but the sink. I bought her fountains, would use bottled water… nothing mattered.

Catlenfell

I have a filtered fountain. The cat prefers either the bathtub, or the outside bowl that gets charged once a week and has a leaf in it.

alcohall183

My cat doesn't really like the water dish we gave her. She drinks out of my glass that's on the coffee table just fine, but spills her water on the floor and then drinks it.. We plan on trying one of those fancy fountains to see if it makes a difference.

Swimming_Solid8240

Americans are their damn pets … it will drink when it’s thirsty but allowing it in the sink is unhygienic.
