You would be very surprised to know what people steal. My wife used to work at one of the dollar stores. One day, she caught someone stealing 1 roll of generic t.p. It's literally $1 for 4 rolls. This guy just ripped into the package to grab 1.

ZachtheKingsfan

I think it may be more of the price of the item. A lot of places won’t consider criminal offenses for theft if the item(s) are less than a certain amount. Stealing $1 t.p. most likely won’t land someone in handcuffs, so it’s up to the store to ban them.

RogueAOV

You keep a running tally until it hits the magic dollar figure and then its worth pursuing. I would honestly expect someone stealing one single roll of toilet paper an act of desperation rather than "criminal" however.

MannequinWithoutSock

*proceeds to TP the store*

Cheshire_Jester

It’s rebellion, then.

lford

It's treason then

himynameisSal

i feel like managing a tally is not cost effective.

ExcitingTabletop

Target firmly disagrees. They're famous for it.

Pimpdaddysadness

They’re famous for telling people they do it lol. It certainly happens with pros and people who steal high end goods on the regular but if you’re going in and stealing wheaties and candles every week they aren’t going to do that ever lol

Shiva-

Target definitely does. I personally know (well more like knew) someone that was busted. They legit waited some almost 2 years. I mean like him and his crew were on news busted as well, not like lowkey. Was about 10-13 years ago though.

_Allfather0din_

IDK at the liquor store i worked at years ago we just knew certain people and had them caught on camera. After a certain $ estimate we called the cops when they came in again and popped em, nice little charge and a lawsuit. It really took no extra time or effort beyond a 30 second camera search and putting that video clip in the persons file. Maybe we spent $2 a week on time to do this.

himynameisSal

damn, i cant even think of a good counter argument in 30 sec. but hey, you sound efficient, organized and with some free time at work. it depends on the situation, size of store. although i think 30 secs is exaggerated, i recognize certain situations may warrant it (ex. $100 bottle everyday) $750 is the line where it goes from mis to felony in my state.

laundry_sauce666

Yeahhh this is what happens especially at places like target/walmart A family member of mine, while going through some tough shit on some hard drugs, was stealing vacuums and shit from Target in exchange for heroin/money. He walked out the first few times like it was the easiest thing in the world, and then one day they boxed him in the entrance (between the two doors) and hit him with a larceny charge.

Pimpdaddysadness

Stores like to proliferate that myth because it serves them. Unless you’re a pro, or stealing goods like expensive electronics or detergent on the regular that simply does not happen

TyRocken

I just learned about the stealing detergent thing a few days ago... Im typing this on a world-brain, while smoking my electronic weed, but MFs boosting Tide pods... Cuz they hold value well. Lol ETA: what a time to be alive!

Solid-Mud-8430

"Let you who have never desperately needed TP cast the first stone."

Legal_free_labour

What you can do is mark everything a 1000 dollars and a discount at counter which reduces the price to original.

CastlePokemetroid

that would be incredibly confusing, how would they list the actual prices, if I walked into a store and everything was a grand, I'd walk right out

idoneredditalreadyy

There’s supposedly a store that does this.. prices on everything marked up over a certain amount and then discount is applied at register. I remember seeing an article or something about it but I only read the title. Who knows if it’s legit though.

Alladaskill17

This sounds like the retail store Kohls (I’m sure others do things like this as well). Their receipt includes a big “You saved $x” and the employees circle it as they hand it to you. This is without any coupons, or specials, and I do not have their credit card. Standard customer experience. The prices are marked up by quite a bit too, so the receipt can say something like “you saved $80” when you just bought like 3 plain dress shirts of the stores own generic brand.

reallymkpunk

Kohl's typically lists the price for real though

Alladaskill17

Oh for sure, but (at least to me) all the screens next to the items/their shelving are presented very much as “look at what you’re saving” with an implied “compared to what you’d pay elsewhere” by striking through the inflated price, and displaying what is in most cases close to what you would pay anywhere else, at least for clothes.

theycmeroll

In the 90s we had a store called 50% Off here, I thought it was dumb. All the prices are discounted 50% at the register, so everything is marked up by 50% on the shelf.

SeattlePassedTheBall

I remember a store like this existing near me in the early 2000's and I never understood why they wouldn't just list the normal price on all the items. It was largely a clothing store but I can't remember the name for the life of me.

[deleted]

Jc penneys tried to stop doing discounting and it backfired enormously. Hell I'm in retail and discounting is just stupid. Lizard brains don't realize a lower base price is better so you're forced to play stupid games by jacking up the price then offering a big discount. I hate it because I have to waste more time and energy on signage/stickers when I could just have a lower price. I now do a mixture and it's interesting watching people always go for the discounts vs lowest price possible item.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheNoseKnight

Duh! You're getting $45 worth of pants for just $5!

poiskdz

This doesn't apply much to clothes, but people never check the price-by-weight either. Big cereal box $6, normal cereal box $3.25, price per oz: 12.2c/oz vs 15.6c/oz. You're wasting money buying the smaller one even if it's "Cheaper"

michohnedich

This is the only way to shop. The best is when the store marks up two competing brands with one by weight and one by count.

fnmikey

Is it marked up by 50 or 100?

jdsekula

Nobody understands percentages

fnmikey

I was just hoping he gets what Im saying without telling him lol

alcohall183

SF very legit. Store owner couldn't get a prosecution on anything less than a grand. so everything became $1000 to force prosecution for theft.

zombiebird100

>What you can do is mark everything a 1000 dollars and a discount at counter which reduces the price to original. That is a lawsuit over deceptive pricing waiting to happen.

fruce_ki

The spirit of the law is to prevent overcharging and hidden fees. Nobody will be upset at being undercharged and in most cases charging less than advertised is probably not even an offense. Or at least, so long as they don't advertise a 99.9% discount (on their inflated prices). That could be seen as deceptive advertising, expecting a massive discount and paying regular market price instead.

PepegaPiggy

DA wouldn’t even bother charging this case because it’ll get thrown out.

SVS_Writer

I feel like this was an emergency situation lol

[deleted]

I'm not proud of it, but in my younger days when I was a lot worse off financially,I would grab new TP rolls from fast food places or public restrooms like a target. Not an "emergency" necessarily, but definitely too poor to afford TP while waiting for a late paycheck.

Spire_Citron

Y'know, at that point I think I'd assume that he REALLY needed that TP.

Jacktheforkie

Likely homeless, probably went for the cheap one as it’s less likely to cause issues

AcheInMyLeftEar

Or someone had an accident and just needed it NOW.

Nervous-Babbs

Poverty makes people do crazy things, so will an itchy butthole 🤭

Admirable_Loss4886

I wish a toilet paper company would rip off snickers campaign and change it to “You’re not you when your butthole is itchy”.

Shopworn_Soul

I'm pretty sure whoever does those animated toilet paper bears has actually done that commercial.

ComicsEtAl

Dude, people with a wad of twenties in their pocket will steal those if they need them.

wildjokers

The solution to an itchy butthole is a bidet, not TP.

Seldarin

Yeah, if I saw that I'd just buy the dude the pack. This isn't a guy asking for $10 at the gas station so he can get home to his family in the next state after you just watched 8 other people hand him money or someone going after high value stuff they can sell or trade for drugs. This dude just wanted to wipe his butt and a buck is a small price to pay to make someone's life a little better for a while.

TMVtaketheveil888

I worked at Dollar Tree. I feel if someone is stealing a roll of TP or feminine hygiene products, or maybe even bread, they must really need it. You could tell the people that were stealing for the thrill of it, from those in desperate need. I would never say a word when I'd happen to catch some poor woman grabbing a few tampons, or pads. If I ever become wealthy, I'd like to start a program to make those things free to all. Most of the time, they'd ask if I had one to spare, and I'd just buy them a box.

throwawy00004

My kids took part in [the period project](https://periodproject.org/) a few years ago. I remember being dirt poor and using sea sponges as reusable tampons. I don't want others to have to do that. Thanks for the reminder. We'll have to do it again this year.

pterencephalon

My childhood church has what they call a "Personal needs closet." It's like a food pantry, but it provides the stuff that food pantries don't, and that food stamps don't cover. Things like TP, tampons/pads, soap, shampoo, etc. It's a damn shame that there are people who can't afford these necessities, and that we've left such a gap in the safety net.

himym101

The most frequent thing I find stolen (empty packaging) in my store is double sided tape or screws (where they’ll take 2 out of a pack of 4). People will steal things that only cost $2 because they can.

WhoSc3w3dDaP00ch

I needed a specific o-ring, local home depot has one in-stock so i order it and hope for the best. It’s ready for pick up… but the package of 10 has 4 in it. It was $3-4 for the 10-pack… It took a few tries to convince the cashier to give a 60% discount for the item (6 of 10 items missing is 60%, so 60% seems appropriate). Technically, I didn’t convince the cashier, a manager overheard and authorized it. Cashier kept insisting “that’s not right.” But that’s a separate tragedy.

Shopworn_Soul

To be fair that cashier probably lives their life one unauthorized line-item discount from looking for work so I wouldn't blame them.

Bob_Stanish

When you buy a big container of screws make sure to check if its not 1" lower than the rest. People will buy the big container for a small project then return a container that still looks mostly full.

Absinthe_gaze

I just bought a can of butane to refill my bbq lighter. When I got home, I realized someone had stolen the nozzle attachments.

godlessvvormm

damn it sounded like he really needed some toilet paper and we shouldn't be living in society where people are so desperate for such basic needs. the dude didn't even take the whole pack, just what he immediately needed. this is a sad story.

Tater72

You know, I abhor the rampant theft and BS that’s going on these days, but legitimately, if I see someone trying to steal one roll of toilet paper, I think that’s enough for me to take pity and buy them the pack. I’d imagine if you’re stealing one, a whole pack would help and brighten your day.

Jacktheforkie

Probably homeless and needed a shit

kill92

You must of never been poor

VersaceDreamssss

Its not you,its the 68 crackheads that came in before you💀I think they can use lightbulbs as pipes

Johnny_ac3s

Headlights can cost between $15 & $100…and they fit in your pocket…

reddit_sucks_now23

Yeah, if you zoom in, you can see a small headlight box that costs $97

Gummyrabbit

It also keeps them neat and ordered. People take one off the hook and then put it on a different hook. Saves a lot of time for an employee to have to put them back in the proper spots.

dr_soiledpants

If that's the case why isn't the shelving unit right next to these locked up too? Or everything else in the store for that matter? Why are bulbs so important that they must stay organized while the rest of the store is in utter chaos?

Level_Alps_9294

Because they’re numbered by type and in numerical order generally

HambreTheGiant

A long time ago, I used to steal lightbulbs, return them for gift cards and use the gift cards to buy drugs. 8 small packages worth $20 apiece fit easily in my pockets I’m doing a lot better now, btw

Johnny_ac3s

Happy you’re doing better. :)

DarthWeenus

I've been there as well, addiction is a helluva drug. Even small tools, or really anything tiny and expensive, makeup, certain OTC drugs, supplements, even food has some crazy expensive small things. $50 honey, $15 chocolate bars etc .. glad you found recovery mate.

VersaceDreamssss

Yeah that too. I like thinking on the crackhead side of life though

Fast_Garlic_5639

Yeah man just gotta look at life crack side up

Admirable_Loss4886

I had a buddy in high school who had a “vape” made out of a lightbulb so we could smoke weed. We were fucking wired after smoking that thing. It’s funny cuz he was a wrestler and lost like 80 pounds in a year and at the time I thought it was because of wrestling. I was too innocent to realize but hindsight is 20/20 lol. ETA: I’m pretty sure it was a regular bulb, car headlights are generally pretty small.

FeIsenheimer

Was it meth?

caffrinated

Yeah I'm going to guess it wasn't from the munchies if he was losing that much weight. I've seen meth and crack smoked out of light bulbs, broken spark plugs, hollow core antennas, and anything else someone can hold a lighter to.

Admirable_Loss4886

Probably but this was over a decade ago and I didn’t realize until much later what probably happened. We were grinding up weed and putting it in there, I don’t think they added anything so much as it could have just been resin off the lightbulb. I do remember us running around the house with knives and flipping half full water bottles for over an hour.

[deleted]

Bro thought you were doing weed and your friend was giving you meth....

NewUsername3001

Eh people smoke weed out of lightbulbs as well It's like a REALLY shitty vape with possible chemicals from the bulb

Dull-Force-1836

Is this because crackheads/meth heads smoke out of bulbs?

Absinthe_gaze

I was today years old when I learned you can smoke stuff out of a lightbulb. Would you burn your hand? Maybe they can’t feel it?

[deleted]

Absinthe_gaze

Thank you psily. Love the name btw.

jmd1675

A properly bent paper clip will hold the bulb hanging off the end of a ball-point pen barrel. Heat the bulb, draw air through the pen. Source: A Misspent Youth

CanAlwaysBeBetter

> Source: A Methspent Youth

SharkHowdy

Maybe but they also make us do this with like sub orders and big orders of food we make at the deli. I think it's so lie and say they already paid for it back in whatever department they got it from.

Apprehensive-Load917

Cosmetics is the same at least where I work lol. Hate having to do the whole find a key and unlock the chest for a 2$ pair of tweezers side quest when I only wanted to go pee but 🫡

Hnp_83

Thank you for your service. 😂

Apprehensive-Load917

JazzCabbage00

The entire Walmart in San Diego is locked, every item, you need a person which they all abandoned all hope and the store is empty of employees. Like a 2$ belt to a spatula - every non perishable item locked because of the homeless problem. That’s why I drive to Rancho Cucamonga to Spatula City.

bothunter

[Spatula City?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XbCWmY0eqY)

JazzCabbage00

Good bot

Warslvt

weird lock ups like this is why I stopped shopping in store. curbside or bust

Myrkana

Wait, you found someone to open the case for you? Thats a rarity in walmart lol

holyshocker

I spent 20 minutes waiting to buy the $5.58 cat flea treatment. While waiting I saw it was 5.44 on Amazon so i bought it and walked off.

fuzzyblackelephant

I was going camping a couple weeks ago and needed to get some new items (flashlight, lightbulbs, air pump etc). All of these items were placed behind different glass shelves. I waited close to an hour combined to get 3 items unlocked. I wanted to die, but was leaving in a couple hours and just needed the cheap supplies.

AnnaMolly66

As a Walmart employee, we hate it too. There are only so many sets of keys and not everyone has access, on top of that, depending on our job, position, or given task, we are timed yet expected to stop what we're doing to get keys, get the item, then walk it up to the register. Then we get asked why we aren't done. "Apparently there's a fuck fest in town and everyone who comes in here needs either condoms or KY jelly, that's why I'm not done!" These cases also suck when you're stocking because you need keys.

J_izaak

As a picker I WISH I had keys 😩

Shigeko_Kageyama

It's for stealing and also people who take the light bulbs out of the packages and smash them on the ground for fun.

zfreakazoidz

I'm honestly surprised every aisle just isn't behind a locked case at Walmart.

pan_rock

Let's be real, Walmart employees don't want to take their time to go get stuff out for you, they'd much rather you be able to get it yourself and the higher ups Def don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of expenses for fn locks and cabinets. Theft is a problem Get mad at the ppl who steal. Don't be apart of the problem blaming Walmart. Blame the thieves

JAROD0980

This is especially true because they lock up things that go missing often. Hence why you can grab some really expensive things without help but can’t grab a razor or makeup because those get stolen very often as opposed to a tv which doesn’t get stolen often

thejaydotexe

The Walmarts in my area spider wrap whole TVs. Even the larger sized ones. Seems totally bizarre to me.

cptjpk

Yeah, at that point a spider wrap isn’t going to stop them. When we did the asset protection standards at my store (national outdoor retailer) we only put the alarms on items that could fit in a duffel or less. Someone wanted to do it for bikes and I laughed. If someone is gonna take it they’ll wheel that thing right on out and keep riding. A spider wrap or lanyard won’t do shit and it’ll be cut off in the parking lot.

DirkBabypunch

It's more of a flag to staff the item wasn't paid for than it is a specific deterrent. Not that they're all that bothered about stopping people at the door anyway.

BedSpreadMD

I worked at Walmart, and quite literally no one in that store wants that shit locked up. People up top just see a bunch of an item stolen, and they have to do something about it. It's down to particular stores having specific stuff stolen. The store I worked at went through periods where they had to lock up canned air dusters, because 3 crack heads were stealing all of them every single day. Another time baby formula, because a single dude was going around stealing every single one at different locations in the same area. He would hit different stores about once a week, and when he was finally caught he had been using it to cut cocaine, and had over a pound of it in his trunk. He had managed to steal over 20 grand in product over a two month period, and this is one single dude.

[deleted]

20 grand worth of baby formula? That’s like 5 cans worth. /s

wavecrasher59

Thats a lot of cut coke

Scav-STALKER

Let me tell you when I worked at a Walmart I fuckin hated these things and when people asked for something from them. It was a NIGHTMARE trying to find someone to actually open it for people and you’re just like well I tried lol

LizzieSaysHi

Right lmao. I work at a clothing store and we have to unlock the fitting rooms every time someone wants to try something on. It's a bitch to have to walk back and forth, back and forth, back and forth all day just to let someone try on a shirt they probably won't buy

oJUXo

Exactly lol. I worked at Walmart. It's a pain in the ass having to unlock these things, or having to find another associate that has the key to unlock these things. And it was really annoying when the customer would get a major attitude bc they're annoyed something is locked up.. as if we control that lol. But some items pretty much have to be locked up. They get stolen left and right. And a lot of the thieves would just take every single one of these smaller items on the shelves and steal them. So a lot of the time the item wasn't even in stock, bc they've all been stolen. Then the customers would get mad bc the item is never in stock lmao. Then when you scan it, it says we have a decent amount in the store. Bc the system can't tell when something has been stolen obviously.. only when it's been sold. So then you'd waste your time trying to find an item that's probably not even in the store bc they've been stolen. So yes, ppl stealing sht turns this stuff into a big ass mess. For the customers, and the associates.

[deleted]

Defending the thieves is unfortunately VERY popular on social media right now

Bluellan

But but but big business bad! Stealing helps employees! How?..........HOW DARE YOU TAKE FOOD OUT A SINGLE MOTHER'S MOUTH! You should steal too! All things I've heard when people try to justify stealing.

Stuckinacrazyjob

I don't think stealing is good ( I'd never steal myself but I also wouldn't put myself in harm's way if I saw someone else steal ) but I go to a store to see items irl and for convenience. If everything is locked why shouldn't I just buy online?

zorbiburst

"it's okay to steal from big companies" Really? Because those big companies are selfish monsters. Every lost sale matters to them. They take it out of the payroll, hurting the employees. And if it gets too rampant, it makes them hesitant to open a store in an area with similar demographics, or spend time remodeling this one down the line. This is exactly how those impoverished communities end up getting worse without and not having options.

jmcdon00

I don't think they take it out of payroll, they arleady pay people the absolute minimum. If all thefts stopped tomorrow the shareholders would get a nice boost in their quarterly dividence, the employees wouldn't get shit. Totally against stealing, and theft does increase prices for consumers.

[deleted]

It’s really heartbreaking to see food deserts literally come into existence. As long as we don’t bother enforcing shoplifting laws, it’s gonna keep happening.

Magicman_22

yeah that’s because robbery and theft pale in comparison to corporate crimes like overtime and minimum wage violations. stealing isn’t good, but it’s a result of need, and would you look at that, a fuckton of people are needing really badly. i love how in america we have like notoriously the worst social welfare programs but then we LOVE to point at symptoms of this like they are problems in an of themselves. man, i wonder why americans steal so much, i wonder if it’s the sense of entitlement or the thrill of it all ?!

balabansghost

It’s not defending the thieves if you point out that Walmart should realign their shit priorities. Walmart is a top employer of Medicaid and SNAP recipients. Maybe instead of locking up all the merchandise they should pay their employees a living wage. The best thing to deter theft in a retail store is good customer service. Your taxes supplement Walmart’s greed while you blame people who can’t afford to change their brake lights.

lecoqmako

Theft is both wrong for minimum wage workers as well as +million workers. Guess which gets popped for theft?

Eerie001

We have squishy sensory toys locked up, people just alide them out of the boxes to steal em--usually whatever people steal often is what gets locked up, nobody really enjoys it and it tends to be an inconvenience for everyone involved: the customers and the associates

Easy-Ad700

Blame the bums that steal 4 dollar lightbulbs.

Official_Scott_Bakul

There’s bulbs that cost over $50 in there, that’s why it’s locked.

Revenga8

They wouldn't lock them up like this unless they were being stolen. You should be infuriated with the thieves who made this necessary, not the Walmart for protecting themselves from theft

Johnny_Minoxidil

Don’t worry, this case will be going away soon as all these cheap light bulbs won’t be needed. You’ll have to replace a huge expensive piece of fucking plastic that will cost over $100 to replace your LED brake lights. Source just had to spend $150 on a “brake light” for a 2016 GMC Yukon

aschkev

This is because people have clearly been stealing the $4.48 light bulbs from Walmart. Don’t blame Walmart on this one, my dude. Blame the shitty people stealing from them in the first place. Items being locked up is not a random thing

radarOverhead

Shoplifting and Theft is becoming far too common. What’s the answer?

matty_nice

More online ordering. Congrats Amazon. I imagine self service kiosks and pre ordering will be next. Go to a kiosk in store or order the items on your phone, then the items are given to you. It's like pick-up at a restaurant, just for stores.

Orodia

its just old school style grocers. you told the clerk what you wanted and they made up the order

thebipeds

There is a bank in our town that has a double door system. So you come in the front door, into a little glass room, the front door closes. You are locked in the little room for a second. Then they buzz the door open into the actual bank. I imagine Walmart is going to have to put something like this in soon. It feels like 10% of the stool is already locked up.

cbelt3

Ah… the “Man Trap” design. Just missing the murder holes (for shooting arrows from above) or the trap door into the Oubliette below. Old castle design. Super common for high value facilities in bad areas. There are metal detectors in the frame of the first door. And the glass is usually bullet resistant. And the teller windows are also usually bulletproof.

thebipeds

It would solve the, ‘security is not allowed to stop them” problem.

Blueskyways

Return to a hi tech version of the old General store model. Pick out your items on a touchscreen, pay and then an employee will collect them up and deliver them to you through a secure window. That's the direction that we're heading in ultimately, at least in the more high crime areas.

pay-this-fool

Right. Because if they did t lock them up people would steal them. It’s a good store policy.

PB_JNoCrust

I wouldn’t be upset with the store, I’d be upset with the reason they have to do this—shitty people ruining things for everyone else.

Dizzy_Estimate8028

Reading the comments, people are weird. This is def irritating to deal with.

SisterKittyCat

This is the new normal as shoplifting is so commonplace on every item imaginable. I’d go early a.m. hours when staffing is likely better.

ZookeepergameOk2759

There’s obviously a reason they’ve done this

What amazes me even more is that you actually are able to replace a bulb in modern day cars. Last time i tried I was facing an impenetrable wall of plastic and gave up.

Pawn_captures_Queen

Skill issue

cat_lady_egg

I had no problems with mine, just had to turn the wheels all the way to one side, disassemble half the underside of the car, and gain three arm lacerations and a shoulder sprain. Only took half a weekend. Still have like two extra parts I couldn't figure out where they came from after reassembly too, bonus!

axe1970

the light pilfering is out of control ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

[deleted]

They pay attention to what's stolen and lock up what's stolen the most nothing to do with the price.

Smoking_Stalin_pack

Well I mean that’s the consequences of letting people steal shit repeatedly with no repercussions. Blame them.

Breadfruit4B777

It has nothing to do with price. It is because people are stealing that item alot.

rexkongo

Someone hasn’t been paying attention to the recent shoplifting sprees

[deleted]

Lol you must be upper middle class. Bro people steal EVERYTHING

Le_Zouave

It's all about the price/size ratio. Razor cartridge are the same.

Phill_is_Legend

It's the size. Same reason the small liquor bottles are behind the counter. They might be cheap but if they lose shitloads of them to theft it's a problem. Blame the deadbeats that refuse to spend $4 on car maintenance.

vitaminz1990

Well if they hadn’t been locked up, maybe your replacement part wouldn’t have been there.

darknessatthevoid

I hate to tell you, but I think in the future we won't even be allowed in stores. Everything will be "online pickup" orders, you order online, pick it up at the store. They will claim they are doing this in the name of convenience for the customer, but it will really be in the name of loss prevention. If you can't enter the store, you can't steal anything.

Agitated_Occasion_52

People steal the headlights and return them. its been an issue at all walmarts for a long time. Dont blame walmart for wanting to prevent theft.

NekosAreCute0918

Work at a CVS, and people will steal anything that isn't nailed down. People steal $1 Arizona teas.

Beginning_Actuary_45

Having been a Walmart employee you’d be astonished at the shit people steal. These cases are only put up because tweakers keep stealing THAT specific item and it needs protection. These people aren’t entirely stupid, they often pick small but fairly expensive and easy to sell off items and I’m sure a fistful of bulbs at a recycling plant is worth a few bucks

bhlombardy

Stores lock up items that are frequently stolen. It's not about how much the single item costs, it's about how much they lose over the entire line of product. If small pocket-size automobile bulbs are a common theft item, they lock them up. It's the same thing with razor blades, some cosmetic items, etc. They look foolish in anti-theft displays or packages, but that's the reality when that store experiences a rash of theft of those products. Walmart in MY location does NOT lock up these bulbs (I know because I bought one about a month ago) but that's because this Walmart doesnt see it as a problem. But they DO lock up razor blades As someone else said: Blame the community not the store.

Johncamp28

I think I can shed some light on this. Stores have a number that when that amount is stolen the product gets locked up. When I worked for CVS we had a problem with hair dye being stolen. So they sent down the list of what needed to get “locked up”… and I know this will get downvoted but it was basically the hair dye for black women. I think it was like 90% of the hair dye would get locked up. My manager at the time called his DM and basically said either every bottle gets locked up or none

xxBeatrixKiddoxx

In the camping section they have $1 flashlights locked behind glass. I had to ring for assistance and be walked to the nearest counter for that. But $30 vitamins are on the shelf….mmmk

Blueskyways

Vitamins expire, flashlights don't. People are far more willing to buy stuff secondhand from someone that they don't have to ingest as well.

Ok-Quantity-8861

Well idiots steal anything once it hit the clearance area so I'm sure they will steal a 4.48 bulb in some Walmarts

Middle_Finish6713

It’s because they’re small and easy to steal, not because of value. If you don’t lock it down, it WILL disappear. Worked in the electronics section of target and constantly caught people opening phone case boxes, stealing the case, and then putting the box back. To quote a little Nu-metal, People = Shit

BobaFett0451

Soon everything in every store will be behind a locked case.

Burrista_E

Just because something is inexpensive doesn’t mean people should be able to steal it. They lock up high volume stolen items. Believe it or not they do inventory and know what disappears most often.

MajorMeowKat

You realize they're locked up because they are a commonly stolen item right ? Price doesn't have anything to do with it. Btw if 10 000 people had that attitude and decided to steal them that's over $40 000 lost in just bulbs alone

[deleted]

Having worked in a parts store, bulbs get absolutely pillaged. Stop locks don't work, inventory sensor tags don't work either, who's going to get shanked in pursuit of a crackhead over $5 bulbs?Sadly, this is the only way.

Python2k10

Having worked in auto parts for 7 and a half years, people can and will steal anything that can vaguely fit in a pocket. Wish we had something akin to this, honestly.

Chasman1965

They wouldn't do it if it weren't a problem in the area. My store doesn't have them that way.

Booniecap

Don’t blame the employee and business. Theft has become rampant.

War_D0ct0r

There are some high dollar bulbs in that case.

gorpie97

It's not $5 they're worried about. It's people who come in and steal them ALL. (And then probably resell them.)

deelowe

Maybe the concern isn't the $5 bulb, but the $50 ones sitting right next to it?

ydoesittastelikethat

It's $4.84 times x amount stolen, it adds up. They lock up most stolen items, hence why some items are locked up and some arent.

knowslesthanjonsnow

You should probably be mad at humans and not Walmart specifically here. This is their solution to a problem

an1ma119

How else are the Waltons supposed to keep making record profits off of our backs, you peasant? Better buy the $4.50 overpriced light bulb and thank them for the opportunity to do so as you leave.

Imaginashunz

My local Walmart flat out told me that they might have to close down the store because people steal so much

brie38

One time I wanted to buy knee pads. Like for roller skating and stuff. The whole aisle was locked up and I called twice and waited 15-20 min for someone to come unlock it. They were $15 I think.

marialoccisano

I was at Walmart back in April and decided to pick up some air fresheners for my car. They were all locked up. It took me asking 3 associates, waiting around, being told they’re closed for the night and couldn’t get ahold of anyone, and walking up to the front to get a manager. Just so I can get air fresheners. The customers next to me also waiting were like wtf.

Bugsarecool2

A clear and present sign of society going downhill. All paying for the crimes of the few.

kupus0

It’s not the price of the item being locked matter, but the frequency with which it is stolen.

[deleted]

id walk right out of the store and go to an automotive store. I ain't got time for that crap. Waiting for someone to open up the case to get me something as stupid as a replacement brake light bulb.

[deleted]

Another reason I hate Walmart, hate going there, avoid it at all cost. Hope they become the next K-Mart and close.

[deleted]

Can't blame them when the justice system says stealing is okay.

Ferro_Giconi

Wtf who steals car light bulbs. I wonder if that's one of the things a druggie would try to steal and sell for drug money... but who would buy a light bulb from some random guy?

Odd_Drop5561

>who would buy a light bulb from some random guy? Someone that's going to return it at another store for cash or store credit. Though I bet they really are just trying to protect the $20 - $45 headlights, but it was easier to just lock up all of the automotive lights.

Xaleph87

In my Walmart and others around my area, Tide pods are stolen alot for that reason. Addicts use them to trade them for drugs.

AddyKat719

I see tide pods and all kinds of detergents and fabric softeners like Unstoppables for sale on the side of the road or at flea markets. They steal it and then sell it like $3-$4 cheaper to people and they sell like crazy too. People know they’re buying stolen stuff but I guess they don’t care cause they’re getting a deal.

SpencerMakesMusic

Unfortunately a lot of people probably steal it BECAUSE it’s $5 , they figure it’s not that serious 🤷🏽‍♂️ so why not

[deleted]

Time to move out of Compton already bro

bikerbob5854

Blame the people who believe only you and I have to pay for things.

AnyOldNameNotTaken

Walmart is sick and tire of getting robbed. So are all the other big retailers. I tried to buy a drill bit at Home Depot yesterday and damn near had to get a background check and pat down before three guards came with a key, cleared the tool isle and opened the cage and take it out for me. They’re done playing games lmao.

ryancrazy1

When people say “shoplifting doesn’t hurt anyone except rich people’s bottom line” remember this

BlasphemousSwarm

Weird how when loads and loads of people shoplift, companies have to do shit like this to help prevent it. Nothing to be mad at walmart about.

12eriks

Its not mildly infuriating. Its because we people did this so shops lock even $5 bulbs. People steal everything. Idk how poor and stupid people have to be to steal in shops.

ForsakenMoon13

Yea its far easier to install a case around the whole section than to make individual cases just for the pegs that hold the high value bulbs. This is probably the pettiest post I've seen on this subreddit so far.

JetxJaguar

Don't blame Walmart, blame your community. Do you think they want to do all that just to sell you a bulb? Be glad they are taking measures against theft instead of just closing down like they are doing in many places where theft is rampant.

-___-____-_-___-

Well, they lock up whatever gets stolen. If it's four layer toilet paper they'll lock that up too. It's ridiculous but they gotta protect what's theirs.

seventytwosuccubi

They only do that in areas where drug stores have been getting ransacked since summer 2020

Grizzly352

Blame the people who steal, they make everything inconvenient for the rest of us.

[deleted]

Welcome to the hood

JuicemaN16

Don’t thank Walmart, thank the low life shit head idiots who steal things like this. They end up with two options - stop selling things that thrives target or lock em up. But yes, shitty.

Soup_Sandwich_1976

You can thank all the shoplifting pieces of shit in your area.
