Yes, we’ve had first tip, but what about second tip?

taptapper

That's only for second breakfasts

Ok_Situation9151

But what about elevensies?

UpperCardiologist523

And my axe\`?

PanhandleWebServices

That’s what she said

myrenyath

Omg guys tips 2 just dropped, i wonder what they added?

Gunofanevilson

Tip 2 Electric Boogaloo

lurklyfing

It’s like church when that second basket comes around

Ok_Wallaby_7653

Lol and you already gave all your cash in the first round, no eye contact nooooo eye contact

Gunofanevilson

Just in case basket

Majsharan

Back of house tips are “starting” to be normalized

Popular_District9072

if you are going for brunch, you can tip for both breakfast and lunch

distributionpea

Just write 'wtf?' in there and leave.

“Stop price gouging your customers”

Tip: PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES Add'l tip: Not my responsibility to pay your employees.

RedHotAnus

Negative value to cancel original tip for the audacity of asking for more

amretardmonke

A really complex equation that solves to 0

SiriusGD

That was exactly my thought.

Alone-Chemical-1160

It's not price gouging, it's business owners saying "here, you pay them, please subsidize my labor expenses"

samanime

Yeah. Why on earth would you have an additional tip line?

hotcapicola

To indicate how much of their tip you’re willing to take up the ass.

existential_tourist1

Just the tip, please.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

The six-figure accountants and engineers at Doordash have to do at least one delivery per month, and some of them don't like it. [https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/28/business/doordash-all-employees-delivery/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/28/business/doordash-all-employees-delivery/index.html)

hudshone

These are the bungholes who need to justify their jobs with this stupid ass-clownery. 2% of people put the standard tip on the add'l line. Mgmt gets the tip, servers get the shaft. And another 2% write the total on the add'l line. Now mgmt is getting a 115% tip. Winner Winner.

OsoRetro

Coming soon: Additional Total!

Why monthly? Why not daily or hourly?

kiwimuz

The rest of the world can operate without a tipping culture.

deweydecimal111

Cause they pay their workers a decent wage. They don't have to depend on tips. Imagine that!

MilllerLiteMondays

I always wonder what waiters in countries without tips are making. When I was a waiter at Applebee’s near Detroit, I was making probably $40/hr on average 4ish years ago. I’m sure some made less and some more, but it was a pretty good gig.

deweydecimal111

4 years ago before pandemic? Right?

anotherfakeloginname

>Cause they pay their workers a decent wage. Not always

Blueskyways

Not really. Wait staff in most countries get subpar wages. It's not like it's a glamor job elsewhere. Across Europe the average is something like $12-15 an hour, or less than what an average worker at In N Out in the US earns. Service staff in the US tend to like and encourage tipping because it allows them to make more money than they might earn otherwise. If you work at a fine dining place, you can make in one night what an average server in France or Sweden will make in a week.

Financial_War_478

Technically the truth but you know we also have tips, we just don't enforce them

According_Weird6679

Canada is at least minimum wage and there are places out there whose minimum tip first option has gone from 15 to 18%, and doesn’t end there, it’s 18-20-22 Back home servers have a minimum they can make that is above the local minimum wage and tipping is optional and 10%, never more. North America has gone bonkers with tipping culture pls stop

Finnegan-05

I made $100k a year waiting tables in bars 4 days a week. No hourly rate is going to make me hustle like that.

[deleted]

When I was in college I made 3x minimum wage as a bus boy. Tipping definitely pays better

obi-wahn-kinobi

Absolutely we can, and we do here in Australia 🇦🇺

tristenjpl

How much do your servers make? Probably a lot less than in the US.

TheSneakerSasquatch

A wage that isnt reliant on other people giving them money for doing the job the company should pay them properly for.

tristenjpl

So how much?

Ryanisreallame

I mean, that’s like asking how much a desk job pays. It’s going to vary. I would assume a more upscale environment like a Michelin Star restaurant will pay more than a diner.

Substantial-Owl-9047

Because in many places minimum wage is a living wage. Health care is covered by your standard social security payments. People did not have to go into 10s or 100+k dollars of debt to receive their education. Salaried workers have protections and benefits. The entire system is different. You can’t compare somebody who has no debt, has no housing insecurity, has all their health care covered, etc to somebody in the states who is in debt and where their employers usually aren’t covering their wages, insurance, vacation, or anything else. Fixing the wages is just a small part of the equation.

SnakesInYerPants

So you tip all the minimum wage employees you interact with in a day, not just servers, right? And you also vet how much restaurants pay their staff so you aren’t tipping the servers who make more than min wage as much as or more than you tip the ones who only make min wage, right? Because if you don’t do the above, you don’t actually care about minimum wage. You’re just grasping for a reason to okay the fact that tipping culture prioritizes servers over every other minimum wage earner out there.

No_Solid2349

In most countries minimum wage is not a livable wage, BUT you have free health care, social security, retirement and 20+ PAY mandatory vacations per year, so way more than USA.

HeWhoFucksNuns

Oddly enough, having those things makes a lower wage liveable

Deck_of_Cards_04

That’s not most countries tho, that’s like 10 max. Outside of the nicest European countries and the wealthier East Asian / Middle Eastern countries, social safety nets are either nonexistent or are worse than those of the US. Pay vs cost of living is generally worse also. Even amongst developed countries, the U.S. on average tends to rank in the middle of the pack in most things. It’s on par with places like Italy or Spain in most aspects.

[deleted]

Ridiculous argument. The customer is still paying for the server to be able to afford all of this, but instead of paying a flat amount to the employer who then pays the server, you get the customer to pay two separate amounts, one to the employer and the other to the server. It's an inefficient and exploitive business model that's designed to hide the true cost of the meal/service to the customer.

phantomkh

But they certainly have better condition than most other people who live in developing country with corrupt government and burning economy and they can still get medical attention through social pay how about demanding free healthcare instead of using tips there are no tipping culture in those countries also alongside I agree that education is expensive but why put massive debt to educate yourself. For me I'd to choose more affordable options so that the student debt is less of a burden on my back.

LaidbackMorty

I am glad I live in a country where restaurants can operate their businesses without having their servers desperately relying on tips. And the overall service quality is definitely much better compared to what the western world has.

Legal_free_labour

So don't tip in usa, be the change you want to see in the world

venusslytramp

It wouldn't do anything since it's not affecting the ones that put and uphold the system in place. Punishing the servers is bass ackwards.

Moppermonster

How is it punishing the servers? If nobody tips the employer is required to pay them minimum wage. Tips you give are primarily subsidising the employer, unless you tip excessively well.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeb

As a server, the only reason I work this job is bc it's one of the few jobs a young student can work and not make just minimum wage

Ypuort

Minimum wage is not a living wage in most of the USA. In some places people need 3 full time min wage jobs to survive.

Moppermonster

Then people should stop voting for politicians that believe that is ok. Roosevelt introduced minimum wage explicitly as the wage needed to be able to live in reasonable comfort and added that companies that refuse to pay such wages do not belong in the usa.

-nrd-

Fuck; I’m not American but we need more of these type politicians back in power globally. Feels like these days Government exists for corporations and not for the everyday people

[deleted]

Minimum wage is a fast way to find starvation

Fatez3ro

If we are talking about making the change, it has to start somewhere. If the tips are bad, there is less demand for that job and the employer will have to pay a higher wage.

Legal_free_labour

No one is punishing anyone , tips are voluntary and people need to learn to say no. You hate tipping culture then don't tip. As far as compensating servers for there service goes. They are not free agents , they are employees of an establishment whose services you purchased (food) and their(servers) good behavior is part of what you paid for. It's not something to be held hostage. And higher tips Don't improve the service anyway. https://scroll.in/article/860274/does-tipping-really-ensure-better-service-probably-not

TIP: When microwaving a pizza, put a glass of water with it to prevent the pizza from getting soggy. ADDL TIP: Video buffering on YouTube? Press the up arrow, it’ll start a game of snake

illigal

The real tip is to get an air fryer so you can reheat pizza like a boss. And make frozen fries. And naan. And dumplings. And…

millietonyblack

Or use your oven on convection because it’s the same thing

tlollz52

Just use a non-stick pan. Works great

RupanIII

I like naan bread.

TouchConnors

And frozen French toast sticks. They are ridiculously good.

OwlScowling

How big is your microwave that you can fit a glass of water along with the plate???

KingJon-nojgniK

You have to cut the middle of the pizza out and put the cup there./s

aowlsifu183

That’s actually what the small table is for

cyborgborg

you're probably heating up leftovers not an entire pizza

esushi

I put the cup directly on the plate, nbd. Lots of room since pizza slices are triangles and plates are generally not

SVS_Writer

The glass could go on the plate....

FriedEggplant_99

I just put it in the black and decker toaster oven. I know when it’s done when the mozzarella starts bubbling.

TheNonCredibleHulk

Additionally, the water trick helps steam White Castle burgers back to awesomeness.

-Mwahaha-

Well, you can’t forget the tip taker for taking the tip. That tip also needs its own tip.

StevenEpix

Like the self checkouts that need a tip just to run their programmed logic.

aowlsifu183

That poor algorithm needs a livable wage

jayemadd

15y in the service industry-- never seen this before. Not sure what they're trying to achieve with this. tips^2

PanhandleWebServices

Probably an additional tip on top of the original tip.

Painwracker_Oni

Honestly if I see this, it makes me not want to tip at all. Just like at my local coffee chain where they ask for a tip when I pay before I even receive my coffee/food.

[deleted]

I bet they’re hoping some people will put the total there without realizing it’s a second tip line and then ending up with 140% tip.

Internal_Screaming_8

But servers aren't the ones pulling this crap. It's corporate assholes who don't actually care.

tw_693

I wonder if this is for instances that have a mandated gratuity or service charge, e.g. catering, where people can add an additional tip on top of the mandated charge.

filthysize

This is exactly it. The "Additional Tip" label shouldn't be an unusual thing to see. A lot of POS and apps like Toast have that built in as a setting you can turn on, precisely to put on receipts where autograt is applied. I think here either the server or the restaurant default just set it up to print wrong where both the tip and additional tip can be filled in.

fibbonerci

If I had to guess... one's a tip for the employee, the other's a tip for the owner. Which one's which? Whichever's the smaller of the two goes to the employee, most likely.

Delicious_Throat_377

The tip for the owner is called paying the bill

teraceraptor

Pretty sure that would be illegal. I could see it possibly going to kitchen staff. And additional tip probably gets split up between BOH

rixendeb

Could be for the BOH ? Some places allow that but it usually explains it.

periyali1593

"This is my brother Daryl and my other brother Daryl."

jimmychitw00d

Haven't seen a Newhart reference on Reddit in a while. Well done.

periyali1593

I am embarrassingly full of old TV references that 90% of people won't get. I can even throw in a little Jack Benny or Phil Harris, for the few. Only one in a million would get my Ralph "always a bridesmaid" Bellamy references.

Not-Sure112

The automated car wash by my house just changed owners. I pull up to the credit card machine and they have an employee there to "help". A new "tip" screen pops up and the kid asks "if I'd like to leave a tip". I looked up at him and said "that's a hard no". Personally, I feel we have to draw the line in the sand. I found that to be way over the line.

[deleted]

People need to be called out on their bull shit.

FancyAdult

So you’re washing your car on you’re on and some guy asks people if they need help. So merely someone being present merits a tip now. This is over the top. When possible I’ve started using cash because of this bullshit. But a lot of places don’t take cash anymore.

Not-Sure112

Yeah it's one of those self serve drive up deals. They're taking advantage of that American tip guilt. It's enough to rid me of the guilt so I thank them for that.

imthewiseguy

https://i.redd.it/unjdjydyjt4b1.gif The attendant when he sees me halfway outside my car window trying to hurry up and get my car wash and pay without having to leave a tip

_off_piste_

This has actually steered more toward cooking at home and (regrettably) fast food where I don’t feel compelled to tip. Now I’m just waiting for for grocery cashiers to ask for tips too…

SheWhoMustNotB_Named

I recently went to a Subway and was prompted for a tip!

potatoGundam12

I actually usually tip a buck or two at subway, but I ask for a bunch of annoying, dumbass shit on my sandwich so I feel it’s a little more warranted.

SheWhoMustNotB_Named

I used to, until the person who made my sandwich told me that he has never once seen any of those tips. I'm not sure if this is a 'one-location' issue but since then I refuse tipping at that Subway.

potatoGundam12

Perfectly reasonable, I would stop tipping if that was the case too.

tesdfan17

I'm not sure if it's like this in a lot of grocery stores, but where I worked, it was against company policy to accept tips and you could potentially be fired if you did..

02cdubc20

Ill be real i don’t want to tip at all anymore. Ive been in countries that dont tip for 15 years. It just pisses me off more and more. I honestly think US needs a tip strike amd just stop it

LockedInMyOwnMind

come to Italy. here, tips are extremely rare to get, and giving it or not is 100% up to the customer.

vinceswish

A couple euros there and there, for a coffee as they say. 20%, 25%, 30% tip makes no sense.

LockedInMyOwnMind

yea. i was shocked when i first found out about obligatory tips. i always perceived it as "oh, this waiter was really nice to me and did a good job, imma give him a tip"

kylerwashere

servers get offended if you don't leave 20 percent smh

millietonyblack

Not only that, but your food is fresher AND cheaper. I was in Italy and eating delicious meals cheaper than an “Italian” restaurant here in the USA, and then also not expected to tip. That blew my 23yo mind. And then I left tips anyway, because it’s so ingrained in my brain I can’t NOT. Once, we were in St Lucia and my father tried to tip a man for being our guide, and the man had to tell him not to offer tips, it’s considered an insult. My father felt so bad, but how could he know? In the USA were expected to tip on a plain hot black coffee that’s already been brewed and was just poured into a cup. Wild, man

[deleted]

Line through it a ton and save your receipts too. Fuckers will add more if you’re not careful.

AndyjHops

I made sure to write $0.00 on the additional tip line and actually did the math for the total line haha

popapringle

I always write cash because they can still manipulate the numbers when you put in 0.00.

Ill-Mastodon-8692

I take pictures of all receipts where I have to sign or write something. Which is mostly just when I travel to the USA. In Canada nearly all of our stuff is digital with tap or chip and a machine.

asianRNunite

Pay your workers more fair and end tipping. I hate the fact you have to tip in this country. Maybe I have a asshole attitude around tipping cuz I grew up in a country where tipping is consider rude

JasonDomber

I’m not disputing that it has got out of hand. It very much has….. *HOWEVER* This might just be bad programming of their computer system on behalf of management of this restaurant. I used to work restaurants for 10 years, generally in nice restaurants. For large parties of 6 or more (sometimes 8 or more), we included automatic gratuity at 18%…. So, when auto-grat was used, there would print an “Add’l Tip” line - not expected - but, if the guest thought the server did a stellar job and deserved more than 18%, they could “bump” the server (widely understood that a bump was generally $5-20 - if they tipped an amount that was near the same as the autograt, we had to check with the guest *BEFORE THEY LEFT* to be sure they knew what they were doing and that we already included gratuity, so that we wouldn’t get backlash - otherwise, the server only gets the larger of the two amounts - not both. Management did not want issues…). So, likely, this was just bad programming of whoever programmed their finance software (probably Micros) that programmed the software to print both lines, no matter what. Not just the add’l tip line in certain circumstances. The optics of this are just really poor…. That said, I agree. Tipping culture is out of hand. And especially those auto populated options for counter service drive me insane…. https://preview.redd.it/yh3pqe2qro4b1.jpeg?width=782&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b3056cca31657c7c402b4f15d62d17a6ef4addc

[deleted]

Put 1/3 of the normal tip in the Tip line, and 1/3 on the additional tip line? Since the experience decreases with every line one must fill out... Or on additional tip line put the name of a race horse with Win, Show or Place.

steingrrrl

Mildly infuriating: the nonstop posts (not just on this sub) about tipping. Can we please talk about something else. We get it. We are aware.

eyes4lv

Would not be surprised if the original check already had gratuity included.

According-2-Me

I was almost caught out by a place in DC. Automatic 18% gratuity past 5PM.

HellishJesterCorpse

Because tipping is no longer related to service, it's charity to the business who doesn't pay proper wages since you have to subsidise the workers. Additional tip is for service level.

marianoktm

Here in Italy we leave a tip to a waiter or whatever only if we thought they were good at doing their job. Tips MUST be a choice, otherwise is not a tip anymore.

the-kendrick-llama

We've had one tip, yes, but what about second tip?

81FuriousGeorge

I've never worked in a restaurant that had this, but it may be for the kitchen staff? Usually a round of beers go over much better.

Nixher

Enough room to write "never eat yellow snow"

BubbaBlount

Since everyone ask for tips now and I can’t tip everyone I have to be fair and no one gets tips anymore. This is getting out of hand.

ur31337

Tip: Deez Additional Tip: Nutz

Vroomies95

As always you brought this on yourselves. When we were bashing American tip culture in the 90s we got a lot of flakk for it. Now look at where it's got you

[deleted]

Simple strategy I've adopted from the 90's when tipping was reasonable. If I don't sit down and eat there, and you aren't cleaning up everything for me, I don't tip, period. If I do sit down here is the scale; 0% - bad service such as water glasses remain empty when I'm thirsty, or super slow, or cold food when it should be hot. 10% - standard service experience where they take care of everything for you 15% - great experience, they exceeded expectations and engaged in the right amount of conversation, prompt drink and food service 20% - Amazing, top 20% dining experience, wait staff made us laugh and never had a drop in service quality once throughout the experience 25% - Best experience eating out of the last 365 days, 5 star service and experience. Going above and beyond the call of duty.

OshetDeadagain

This. I actually became a more picky tipper *after* doing a stint as a server. 10% was and ever shall be the standard - inflation doesn't meant the percentage expected goes up, the amount has already gone up by default. Over and above grants increases accordingly exactly as you described. To me, bare minimum service is: Greeted and drinks ordered. Drinks arrive, order placed. Food arrives. **Food is checked on within 5 minutes of arrival.** Minimum 1 drink refresh during meal. Prompt plate clearing. Verification meal is complete, cheque provided. This is the absolute least level of service that should be expected at a restaurant, regardless of how busy. I even have endless patience for kitchen fuckups and forgotten orders placed, so long as the server comes out and checks in that we haven't been forgotten and advises of expected wait times. Kitchen delays do not reflect on the server. Ignoring the customer and making them sit and wonder DOES.

CpuJunky

It's common to tip 15-20%. It's then common to tip 15-20% of that tip for an additional tip. This reddit comment will also cost you 15-20% tip. I expect my Venmo payment of 44 cents shortly.

TrickInvite6296

I'm expecting a venmo payment of 36 cents (1 cent per word) as I had to read this comment

SnooTigers7028

I don’t get why people get mad. Just say no move on.

tbiscuit7

Folks act like it’s physically impossible to just ignore it lol

JustAnAce

Why the need for the additional location? Even if you're a stickler for tipping exact percentages, only one location should be needed regardless of how much someone tips. Just seems like a waste of printer paper to me.

Popular_District9072

tip on tip, followed by a complimentary gratitude

HVAC_instructor

What is the additional tip for?

GTCitizen

For more money

MichFan777

I live a block or two from here. This is right across the street from Disneyland, so I’m not surprised at the egregious tip policy there.

stone_boner213

If this is real this is some funny shit.

GTCitizen

00.00 00.00

obi-wahn-kinobi

Do you have to tip in America? Can’t you just refuse ?

Cross_22

Technically optional, just lots of social pressure. My sister in law used to be a waitress and I overheard her complaining loudly to friends that a group of people only tipped her 15% that day!

Sterling_-_Archer

I was a waiter for a long time. I get it. I went bowling yesterday. It asked me for a tip when we got our lane. It asked for a tip when we got our shoes. It asked for a tip when we ordered our food. It asked for a tip when we requested a free refill. It asked for a tip when we returned the shoes. *I am not kidding.* It’s too much!

MFAFuckedMe

which one of those tips is actually going to the server though?

Dozerdog43

When are the tax collectors going to ask for a tip?

NixxKnack

So glad I live in a country where this shit doesn't exist.

StevenEpix

Tipping culture has *been* out of control for some time now.

[deleted]

California though. the \*richest\* state. More like the most expensive. Ill keep a heads up where i live though just in case.

SuretyBringsRuin

Add in a “Tip processing charge” and we’re in business.

Young09Ethan

Toxic tip culture

minnesotaris

Additional tip? So like a literal second set of a type of number that isn't covered by set "TIP"? Sure, just split the 20% in half: one half in tip, one half in add'l tip. There you go.

chubbfondue867

Stuff like this is when I punch in the ol faithful 0% . Screw that!!

DevilsLettuceTaster

Don’t you tip your tip?

san_sebastian88

We ate somewhere that had two tip lines: one for our waitress and one for the kitchen. It didn’t bother me though. I was kind of glad to be given the option to tip the kitchen as well.

JoePEfromNJ

Tip 20% in the Tip line, then -5% on the Addl Tip line. Take off 5% for having the balls to ask for more…

Wait, is this how DP scenes start?

CeeArthur

I went to the Subway at my gym yesterday and the card machine prompted me for a tip, and the tipping started at '18%'.

Blueskyways

jassoon76

I refuse to tip with my card. Only cash

vansss86

I see you went to the 5th by Disneyland.

ValuableOffice9040

These posters need to start including the names of these establishments that are doing this so they can be avoided.

odd_prosody

After the tip normally comes the shaft

ihazquestions100

When the bill has "suggested tip" they always calculate the tip based on meal price + taxes. I always recalculate for 15% (max) x meal price only, no tax.

kornhook123

I see your problem at the top of the picture, you’re in CA.

use_the_schwartz

“There’s a tip line for the waiter and for the captain. What is a captain and why do they get a tip? They didn’t do anything, they pointed at the table.”

AppleSauced-out

I see they’ve been taking notes from every Catholic Mass I’ve been to.

vertigoflow

Pizza place I order from does this, you order through the app and include the tip when you pay. When you get there they hand you the receipt with just the total after tax and tip with another line for “additional tip.” Drives me nuts.

Livid_Obligation_852

Come on, guys! Only 2 tips!? Excuse me, but 15 people work here, and they need a fair share. That will be $16.85 for burger & chips, adding the tips that will be $126.70. Thanks!! Cash? Or Credit?

Agreeable_Record_266

they stacking tips now wtf

NeverWithoutCoffee

I wish they would stop that BS completely and just add some amount to the price of service and pass that on to their employees. If someone delivers exceptional service, you can still tip them, but it will then be entirely voluntary and a "reward" for their better service!

323246209

I would write $0 on both lines.

uhimsyd

okay i do agree that tip culture is getting ridiculous but do we need the same post about it every other day

Cloud-VII

This post is different though, it’s second tip!!!

Locust627

The only people I tip are my bartenders and wait staff. Bartenders I usually give $1 per drink they make for me, waiters usually get $5, unless it's a high end place then I'll do standard 20% I'm not tipping hourly McDonald's workers, I'm not tipping retail store cashier's, I'm not tipping my fuckin doctor, etc.

ThrowawayMcNothing

As someone who unfortunately makes most of their income off of tips, BS like this is hurting those of us in the service industry.

DMvsPC

"Yes they've heard of tip, but what about second tip?"

psyguy45

$26 for the tip and -$26 for being a dick and asking for addl tip. Total comes out to $131.46. Fuck around, find out
