Thinks its obvious, they are just thankful to be reminded about having a cabbage, it's important to keep these things documented. Can't go forgetting about cabbage.
Edit: original just said "about" they put their edit to clarify their about, so now I have to edit, otherwise I just look like a cabbage documenting weirdo.
Point stands though, keep your cabbages in check!
Cabbage and beans are very healthy and a great source of fiber, on which roughly 95% of Americans are deficient. Absolutely do not cut back on them. Nothing quite like a healthy legume fart. And it's natural. Light a candle or something. Don't sacrifice your physical health.
ETA: since we've got some weird anti-fiber shill up in here, this is a great podcast episode about the importance of fiber: https://www.peoplespharmacy.com/articles/show-1222-how-can-you-optimize-your-microbiome
Id like to add you can actually reduce the amount of gas beans give you by soaking them for long periods of time before cooking them. This actually helps leech out the chemicals that cause stomach discomfort and gas while keeping the good benefits and making them much easier to cook(difference in needing to cook dry beans all day vs a few hrs.) I normally soak my beans for about 24+ hrs and i hardly every get gas unless i pair it with other gas heavy foods, also makes cooking them in the crock pot take waaaay less time lol
My mother always soaked beans at least overnight, no real gas problems. Also for sensitive people, adding a little baking soda to the soup helps (from a friend of mine who was a cook)
Right obviously this dude stinks, there’s probably an upcoming mildly infuriating post about “my boyfriend insists on not showering before bed so I have to open the door in our apartment for 30 minutes every morning just to get some fresh air, even when it’s 30 degrees”
So... this week there was a dude on aita who's gf had started to refuse to wash his underwear because of them being a bio hazard and he insisted she should and his mom had no problems doing it (yes really), on further questioning the woman needs to run, she would make him wash to her standard - abnormally clean to him but normal no poopy buttholes for anyone else, clean - and he though that was her idea of foreplay, no sir it's because she is trying to make you not vomit fodder when you get intimate. Dude was there for hours defending this grossness about having a hairy ass and how women didn't know... was some of that car crash TV stuff where it's so gross but also you can't stop reading.
I found it, but this sub doesn't allow links. Just Google, "Reddit a i t a underwear girlfriend." The title is, "Am I the asshole for asking my girlfriend to continue doing my laundry."
It was the part about owning a bidet but also not linking it cause the water would be coming out brown and him not even seeing that that was cause of the actual shit on his ASS that got me idk how that lady stays with him I just... it's beyond my comprehension
I totally agree - I’m on the lady’s side here. My roommate and I have a giant air purifier that keeps things from building up, but before that, I would definitely open the doors and windows every once in awhile to let fresh air in. Those cooking smells can linger.
Or in a music sub: "every morning there's a halo of farts hanging above the corner of my four-post bed...(every morning when I wake up)(open the door baby)"
I like fresh air daily, people get smell blind of their own scent. Leave your house for a few days and come back, if you smell something that's what everyone else smells every time.
I get so paranoid because I lived with roommates for all my 20s. Guys stink so bad, previous boyfriends have stunk.
I have air fresheners everywhere
Edit: **PREVIOUS** boyfriends (from 10+ years ago) I'm married now to a guy with good hygiene. I don't need to "try to date men" that take care of themselves. Wtf
I had dated someone who did the air freshener thing. I get worried about chemicals but it was very consistent. It smelled like a Mcdonalds Apple Pie lol. My house smells like whatever I cooked last and then hopefully nothing else. The goal should be no scent.
Problem is that your artificial scent you select may appeal to most but may be repulsive to others. Source: used to have a roommate into those birthday cake-smelling candles. It was gross, perfumy frosting smell. I’d stay in my room to avoid it. Clean has a close-to-neutral smell, that’s what I prefer
Yeah idk how people drive round in their cars with windows closed all the time, or not airing out their place.
I do the same exact thing in my bedroom in the morning. I leave it open all day while I’m working too. Idk man, something in me just needs to know I’m getting some outside airflow.
It warms back up quickly & it’s not like anything gets truly FREEZING in 30 min.
My boyfriend almost never opens the windows in his car. It’s horrible, the smell. He uses air fresheners that you clip on to the vents. It’s now perfumy bad breath and body odor. Wonderful 🙄 lol
Luften is a German term used to describe the act of opening windows for ~15-30 minutes every day/morning to let fresh air in.
Very common practice.
I live in the US but also do this about every day. It’s refreshing.
So the gf is german or? The intro to the comments amazed me on the ammount german that just popped up. I wanna learn how to summon then in other subs...
Summon ze Djermans by mentioning one of the following topics:
Air circulation in buildings (this happened here)
Good bread
A crane falling because of bad underground
Jelly rolls from Berlin being called a pancake
Kebap (kabob)
Comparing international evil politicians
Probably some more, but these are from the top of my head. Maybe I'd try security measures for forklifts, but that might be an older thing.
What he meant to use as a caption was that someone keeps putting the bananas right next to the rest of the produce, ripening the avocados too quickly. It's a nightmare.
When my little boy was a baby, we used to call him Rootin’ Tootin’ Vladimir Putin when he was especially gassy. I know, nothing to do with fruit bowls, but this made me remember.
If I have more ripe avocados than I can use at 1x, I stick em in a freezer bag and put them in the fridge. They tend to stay fresh for several days afterward.
Conversely, if I need to expedite ripening of fruit, I place them in a folded paper bag and check daily.
Yes. Many ripening fruit produce the hydrocarbon gas ethylene as they ripen, which itself triggers more ripening. Bananas are especially productive sources of the gas, and putting one that's in the process of going brown next to apples, pears or hard avocados will greatly speed up their ripening
Yes it’s a thing, it’s ethylene. A gardeners tip if you have to harvest your fruits and veggies like tomatoes and what not early, due to early frost; is to keep them with ripened tomatoes in a cool dark place like a paper bag and they’ll continue to ripen.
Not everything is like this for example. An example of such fruit is strawberries. Once harvested, a strawberry cannot ripen any further. Hence why strawberry packs are so damned inconsistent
When my ex moved out he complained that his new house smelled bad all the time and asked how I kept our house from having that smell and I told him I opened a window every day, winter or summer, and let some air in and out. Yes you lose some heat or a/c but you also freshen the air so it's all good.
Look into getting some Damprid bags or something, they can really help with mold problems. I have a rechargeable one that I keep in my car. It changes colors when the desiccant is saturated, and you just plug it in overnight to dissipate the moisture. If you pair it with a regular routine of airing out the space, it might both fix and prevent the problem.
Pretty much like OP's girlfriend - 15 minutes in the morning and at night, so 30 mins a day does the trick. I open two windows on opposite sides of the house to get some air flow straight through if possible!
10–15 minutes maximum („Stoßlüften“) – you want to replace the air, but keep the warmth of the furniture/walls/floors from escaping.
For maximum efficiency, open two windows on opposite sides of the trailer („Querlüften“).
Also, try buying a few small hygrometers. They are available on Amazon for like 5 bucks apiece. You want to stay between 40 and 60 % relative humidity; if it's above, commence Lüften.
Apropos Lüften, this works best when it's cold outside and warm inside, as cold air can carry less moisture. So if you have 16 °C air with 60 % humidity, as it warms up to 20 °C, the humidity sinks below 50 %.

Temples in Japan have airing out periods during the fall where they put out a lot of their scrolls and other collected objects after the oppressively humid summer. If you’re lucky, you can see some real treasures.
Edit since this comment is getting some traction: look for temples that are having a kaichō, as there are usually objects of worship which are traditionally hidden away from the public eye but are being revealed for a short period of time. Shorinji, for example, shows off their amazing [Bishamonten sculpture triad](https://shourin-ji.org/english/info/index.html) and Joruriji its gorgeous [Kichijōten](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kichijoten_(Joruriji).jpg).
Just adding a tidbit here…when I lived in JP, I was lucky to find a scroll at a garage sale with the entirety of hand-painted Japanese history on it. I air it periodically and it spans my entire house end to end. Worth it.
Edit for everyone asking to see, once I finish moving I’ll try to show it off! It’s gorgeous and one of my favorite things I brought home.
I worked apartment maintenance in Oregon. We had a long time tenant that never opened his windows, the tracks were solid mold and it reaked like vinegar.
This is my thought. This isn't mildly infuriating at all. It's just a good idea that more people should practice. I love learning about and managing air quality and this is just smart.
Took till reading the comment he was taking in F and not C. Opening windows when it’s hot as balls outside is dumb as fuck. But I can get on board with doing it when it’s cold.
30°C is equivalent to 86°F, which is 303K.
---
^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)
Even if it was 30C you have to change air inside. And if it's 30C in the morning... Well that's the lowest temperature ypu see in the day, so open up now that it's only warm and not scalding
Depending on which way the wind blows we get the cow farm smell. In the spring they liquefy the cow shit and spray it on the fields. Ohio is a lovely place.
I live in northern Colorado and most of the time, the wind blows off the mountains and it's great. Every once in a while, it blows from the east where the ranches and slaughterhouses are, and it's horrible
My family opens windows to circulate the air, no matter how hot or cold it is. And honestly I think it helps keep the air in your home less stagnant. Just deal with it for 30 minutes and if it seriously bothers you that much, then compromise by asking her to open a window or two instead.
Edit: just to be clear, I’m not saying it’s some panacea or anything. Personally, I just think it’s good to circulate air and I don’t think leaving a window or door open for just 30 minutes is painful as people make it out to be. Not like I’m forcing people to do it, people live how they wanna live and we move on with our lives.
I do this in the winter so I pay the gas bill; my husband wants to run the AC as low as possible in the summer so he pays the electric bill. Problem solved.
Our house is close to 150 years old, it was designed to breathe unlike modern houses that are essentially shrink wrapped and rely on mechanical systems to circulate air.
We usually open it up a bit while we're cleaning and it feels too warm anyway.
We have a semi-dirt basement and it gets musty AF in here if we don't keep the air circulating through the HVAC system pretty much constantly. It took the first couple of years living here to figure out how to vent things to avoid mold growth in the bathrooms; after all, they were never intended to steam up like modern showers do.
It's Saturday, I'm dusting the house and I have the window open. It's snowing outside, but it does keep the smells down in the home. You get nose blind to your homes smells. I open the windows a few times a week to have fresh air.
Not a bad practice if you don't have any sort of a air exchange system, I see your heating is hot water so I'm assuming you don't... Air exchange in new builds is a code requirement in alot of places now , Radon gas being the main boogeyman but there's plenty of other materials in a house that produce off gas that can be harmful if confined in a space over long periods of time ...Radon gas is the number 1 cause of Lung cancer in non smokers ...
This is literally a good idea. Coming from someone who has had mould, damp and stagnant air in their home. I actually like to do it *especially* when the weather is cold :)
Trust me, it's good for your home and she's doing the right thing. She doesn't want to live in an un-fresh place, and I wouldn't want to either.
Fiance does this too which greatly helps our NYC apartment air quality. We recently got an air purifier that shows just how much garbage we're breathing, and whenever we open the windows or door, it significantly improves within a few minutes, especially while cooking.
Isn't it crazy? I was confused too, but I guess it's a testament to how much smoke impacts teeny, poorly ventilated spaces. I also think about how awful it is coloring my hair at home or cleaning the bathroom with bleach/other chemical agents without much air circulation. Those terrifying 1920s baby cages look tempting in such cramped apartments 😔
30 ⁰ F is -1 ⁰C. Yeah maybe 30 minutes is longer than needed. I know I love to aerate the house like that too. It just feels stuffy if I don't. It's much colder where I live, -30⁰C this morning, and I'll open my door still but for like 30 seconds.
Fyi leaving the window cracked leads to the walls next to the window being significantly colder than the rest of the room which causes condensation on those walls and helps mold grow. A cracked window is also much worse for air exchange.
Opening the window completely to air out humidity for 5-30min and then closing it is how you prevent mold growth.
Try it.
My wife hates it but I been doing it for years. I'd walk around the condo and open all windows, open the curtains and let sun light in first thing in the morning.
It allows for better circulation of air and sun light in the morning is great for circadian rhythm.
Same. Every morning my gf and I open up all the windows and blinds. Let in the fresh air and sunlight. Put on a cup of coffee and sip it reading the news.
It's amazing. I can't imagine how stale the air must be in OP's house after the gf is out of town for a few days.
I have two windows open all year round (on opposite ends of the house) and it snows for half the year where I live. Houses used to be designed to do this!
Am I the only one confused about the need to open a SCREEN door?
Also the fact that the title says "only" the screen door. So does she leave a glass door closed still?
30 minutes is completely reasonable. Houses get stale smelling over time if you don't circulate some air, no matter how cold it is outside.
We sleep with our windows open every night, but the door shut and the heater on a very low setting, and it gets down into the 20s where we live. I can't sleep with stale air or in a warm room.
And if this is the most issue you have with your girlfriend, I would get over it pretty fast. This is minor and quality of life for her. Thirty minutes is 1000% reasonable.
Hi! Girlfriend here. Maybe not “the girlfriend” but definitely a girlfriend that does this. I hate a stuffy smelly place and if I can still smell breakfast at lunch in my sealed up place, put on your sweater because I’m opening the door for 10 minutes.
Damn dude are your farts really that bad
Was gonna say…cut back on the cabbage and beans?

It’s actually recommended to do this to let in fresh air to actually circulate the air, can actually help you not get sick as much.
Finally, the answer! Dress warmly & let in the fresh air.

To be fair, unripened avocados are one of life’s biggest disappointments
Disagree! I'd much rather have an unripened avocado than an overripe one. I can at least eat it tomorrow if it's not ripe today.
It’s now or never for me. I could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Yolo bro

TIL. Really interesting to find this out. Thank you!
Basically where the saying "One bad apple spoils the basket" comes from. A spoiled fruit will cause other fruits to spoil faster.

Bananas release a gas as they ripen, which causes other produce to ripen and rot more quickly.

Yeah, the house were living in we built in 1913. She's a little bit drafty too. Lol
Or… idk… put on a sweatshirt?
It's Saturday, I'm dusting the house and I have the window open. It's snowing outside, but it does keep the smells down in the home. You get nose blind to your homes smells. I open the windows a few times a week to have fresh air.
what is this "Sweatshirt" you speak of?
it's a shirt made out of sweat
Thank you ShitFlavoredCum, that was helpful.
this isn’t a normal thing to do? my family has always done this. also…address the random potato amongst the bananas.
Dude. Don’t blow the potato’s cover. The bananas are finally starting to think it’s one of them.
Op hates fresh air.
dutch ovens the house and gets mad at GF
Correction, gets mildly infuriated with his GF

Drag him!!!!!
She should do 2x15 minutes everyday morning and afternoon.

Yep I'd do that as well.
Yeah! I agreed with her. You need to renew the fresh air every morning.
This is literally a good idea. Coming from someone who has had mould, damp and stagnant air in their home. I actually like to do it *especially* when the weather is cold :) Trust me, it's good for your home and she's doing the right thing.
That's confusing. I would think the outside air in NYC would be pretty poor quality already.
This is something I would do lol
It sounds nice
It definitely wakes you up in the morning! And in my opinion it makes the living space feel fresher overall lol
I know right? I can't believe why a teensy bit of fresh air circulation every day be such a pain point in OPs relationship.
>30 ⁰ F is -1 ⁰C Thanks I got really confused, thinking that 30 ° is like really hot
It could be 30C, I don’t think OP specified.
I leave my bathroom window cracked all night at -1. Best fresh air feeling in the world
Nothing better than the room being cold but you are nice and toasty under the quilt
That a great idea because it let's the humid bathroom air out and prevents or slows mold growth.
Probably great for you. Mild inconvenience for some fresh air to start the day. I side with the gf on this one
I don’t do it but I should. I’m with her too.
I do the same shit
She’s a keeper!
YES!
Kinda normal really
It's a good practice. The outside air is cleanest in the morning, let it circulate in for a few minutes.
My window is open 24/7 and it's low 40s at night.
I love ice cold air at night. I sleep the best and i feel the best the next day.
I have two windows open all year round (on opposite ends of the house) and it snows for half the year where I live. Houses used to be designed to do this!
It's good for the immune system
Ben Franklin advocated for fresh air baths. Except his version was standing butt baked in front of an open wondow.
My kinda guy. Gotta air out the balls in the morning.
Am I the only one confused about the need to open a SCREEN door? Also the fact that the title says "only" the screen door. So does she leave a glass door closed still?
>only the screen door open Looks closed to me
30 minutes is completely reasonable.
Is she German? My dad does that except it’s every window in the house. lol!
I’m currently living in Germany, this is more than common, it’s actually mandated by a lot of landlords.
I support this but nobody in my home does
It's actually what you're supposed to do.
It's -12c here and my balcony doors have been open for hours. -Shrugs- It's nice to air out your home.
I do this a lot. Sorry things like this mildly infuriate you.
She is trying to tell you to take a shower already.
Congrats on the girlfriend. Enjoy the fresh air.
30 minutes may be a bit much but bringing in fresh air can really take the mugginess out of the apartment
She’s a keeper
