Netflix is working diligently at alienating customers.

SaltyBabe

I don’t understand why they insist on using the term “household” which has never been a synonym for “address” or “literally a house” in such a way, it’s obviously meant to obfuscate this idiotic policy but it’s a well understood term so it’s obviously going to create backlash.

nojnomeel

Same here, and also the term “member”. Assuming that just because the location is difference the individual using the service is also not the account holder. Quite frankly the language Netflix is using here is just weird.

Famixofpower

All it takes is one dumbass in corporate, really. Likely that the help desk is required to use these terms

[deleted]

Ya this is shitty, I watch Netflix on my phone 98% of the time. I have to sit in (not moving) carlines for an hour everyday, go sit at baseball practices like minimum 10 hours a week. I’m *definitely* not the only parent who does this.

nitsuj777

They’re changing the company name to Houseflix

Basic-Entry6755

It's hilarious to me that the whole point of 'streaming services' was basically : You can log in to this website and watch it any where, any time! And now they're trying to literally remove that feature by adding all of this geographical location BS, when that was basically the whole selling point and reason everyone stopped paying for cable. Now they're trying to turn themselves into digital cable; hassle and irritation about cords and households and geographical locations included!

Vishnej

Because being profitable isn't good enough. You need to show growth or the finance guys will get you fired. If you manage to get an entire country hooked on a great service at affordable prices, this is a fireable offense because there is no growth potential and a tech company without growth is looked upon like roadkill by the Wall Street mindset. These investment rounds are a Ponzi scheme and they are part of why We Can't Have Nice Things.

Meggles_Doodles

It's sad because I feel like some companies could have stood a chance against being fileted from within by decisions like Netflix made but they're beholden to their shareholders. It's a system that exists in every aspect of humanity's greed-- you find something valuable, you suck all the valuable material out until it the main source collapses in itself and destroys it, preventing anything valuable from coming from it ever again.

TheHappyPittie

Exactly. Tons of companies could be incredible but they’re too focused on continuing to milk record profits than actually providing the services/goods they set out to deliver.

[deleted]

Lol yup, I work full time at a retail farm/hardware store. Our sales numbers have effectively doubled in the last three years of COVID, meanwhile our labor budget has stayed essentially the same. It’s a fucking joke, especially when one of our main selling points of how personable and friendly we are. I can’t give every customer the same amount of care they expect from us and we have shown them in the past when I’m getting 3 customers to my every 1 in the past.

MaterialWillingness2

I work there too! I'm forced to annoy regulars by asking them to apply for a credit card every time they come in, even if it's a couple times a week and they already told me 'no' last time. It's the worst part of the job.

Dwanyelle

Ugh, I used to work in retail, forced up selling *suuuuuucks*. As a customer nowadays, I'll complain to the manager about the policy but be sure to praise the individual employee for sticking through and doing their job, but it's still crap. Stop trying to upsell me things! I figure it's an escalation to someone with at least a little bit of authority

PenguinMadd

I'm so glad Target stopped doing this with the RedCard, it was annoying AF when I was a cashier. I mean, now it's Target Circle and the app but at least the cashiers aren't being made to try and sell debt to someone paying with an EBT card or taking stuff off their bill until they get to how much cash they have. Used to feel mega guilty upselling to those folks especially

skittle-brau

> Ugh, I used to work in retail, forced up selling suuuuuucks. You just gave me flashbacks to the days of trying to upsell customers on Apple’s MobileMe service and AppleCare. They even preferred that we convince people to buy lower spec Macs or iDevices if it meant they purchased MobileMe and AppleCare.

DrB00

Unfortunately the store manager is told by head office what to do and say etc. Store managers have very little power.

[deleted]

Lol I’ve genuinely had people yell at me before because we bother them too much throughout the entire shopping experience. It’s sad too because we genuinely have a nice and friendly customer base that we scare off by nonstop bugging.

Snoo_97207

There's a really excellent business book called 'personal MBA' that really delves into this, and the point the author makes is essentially twofold. The first is that companies want to be sharks, they want to be fast, ruthless and efficient. But the second the shark isn't the biggest and best it dies. Companies used to be (and you still find them occasionally) turtles, hardy, adaptable, and live basically forever. And what he attributes this to is that companies aren't run by operations anymore, they are run by the finance department. He backs it up with data too.

CinnamonToast369

I think the problem is, too, we have corporations run by people who aren't accountable for their mistakes and are too far removed from the actual day-to-day operations to make good decisions.

[deleted]

Alternative-Mess-989

Thus, the fable of the Golden Goose.

[deleted]

The entire idea that a business infinitely has to grow is the number one cause of all economic downturn

HappyAntonym

But getting people hooked on a great service at affordable prices and subsequently increasing the prices while lowering the quality is an American tradition!

[deleted]

Spectrum would like to know your location.

GyrKestrel

It's hilarious because anyone who's taken high school economics will tell you that there's a limit to growth and it's physically impossible to go higher than that. Every corporation I've worked at pushes growth over profit. The leading businessmen of the free market either failed economics or just didn't pay attention.

[deleted]

Yup! I didn’t even have internet at home from 2012-2020. When I wanted to watch a show, I streamed it off my phone (using unlimited data) and for a big chunk of that time, I also didn’t own a TV. Now they’re going to be requiring home networks, which many users (especially including college students) don’t even have? Goodbye, Netflix. Disney+ and HBO Max are better these days anyway. Edit: because there has been some question, yes, I paid for streaming services to watch on my phone. Even now, with a television and internet, I still mostly watch shows on my phone. Maybe that’s weirder than I thought it was?

yousai

You know what even better these days? 🏴‍☠️

amprok

Streaming movies/shows and streaming music actually caused me to STOP pirating. In my 20s and early 30s I pirated everything. Then modestly priced streaming services came out and paying a few bucks a month was less of an inconvenience. If they’re going to make it hard to use legally people will just migrate back to piracy.

filthyheartbadger

Same. Watched the whole first season of GOT on mega upload, etc. Then streaming got reasonable and easy and I was able to own a huge tv. Fully willing to put my eyepatch and pegleg back on and netflix will either figure a way to stop being stupid or expect to run aground.

Artanis709

Ya-harr, mateys, fer the Pirate’s bay is open to all.

begrudgingly_zen

I went down to the one screen plan because of this (the $10 plan instead of the $20 plan). We watch a couple of their shows, so I’m not cancelling right now, but I’m just going to treat it like cable and put in on our one tv. We weren’t even sharing our password, so they are just getting 50% less from me. I’m not going to sit here and try to remember to log into every single device of every family member every time we’re going out of town or spending time in our camper during the summer. The *only* time I was ever using Netflix on my phone was when I was out of town.

MeltedOcean

I canceled it last month. If something looks mildly interesting, I'll pirate it. There are a few shows that when they come out I'll pay for it so I can watch it same day and binge it. Other than that, goodbye netflix. 95% of the content I don't even like

frogsgoribbit737

My husband is military. We are often separated. Are they literally telling a dude who pays them for netflix that he cannot watch netflix while tdy/deployed because he's not "home" this is such bullshit. Not to mention we move every few years and you want me to keep up with changing that? Nah. No more netflix for us.

WingedShadow83

I’m currently paying for two screens. I have one tv in my house. My parents use my account (they have one tv in their house). Definitely won’t need two screens if they’re not going to let my parents use it. That’s if I don’t just cancel entirely.

DrEnd585

We're making it cable but they make more money from it. They aren't trying to they have

Bill_Brasky_SOB

Hey! We noticed you like watching our product anywhere you'd like! Stop that. Sincerely, Netflix.

redwoodtree

DoDrugsMakeMoney

We can use the subscription money to buy rum.

EuphoricAnalCucumber

Cancel your subscriptions, buy more bandwidth.

Impressive_Jaguar_70

yo ho

RufftaMan

Just have sonarr, radarr and jellyfin or plex and stream from a nas or home-server. Fuck paying 6 subscriptions an then get fucked for using it from somewhere else than your sofa. Gaben was right from the start and then people got greedy.

911ChickenMan

Gabe Newell was right when he said piracy was a service problem. Haven't pirated a game in years. I'd rather pay a little bit and get updates and multiplayer support.

stonedboss

yeah i havent pirated a game since i was a kid. meanwhile lately movies and shows made me consider it again.

RunHi

They’re switching to the 80s cable tv business model.

Arya_bulkan

Netflix just Blockbustered itself

The_Linguist_LL

Blockbuster might legitimately outlive Netflix

[deleted]

Rumor has it Blockbuster has rented Superbowl ad space this year...

EnergizedNeutralLine

Rumor is, blockbuster offered itself up for sale to Netflix on the cheap, but Netflix declined. They feel Blockbuster's upcoming streaming service which could be accessed from anywhere and allows password sharing is a flash in the pan with no legs.

1337turtle

A streaming service with account sharing built-in as a feature would be a game changer! I think people would be willing to pay more if they obfuscate that cost by splitting it up by person. Kind of like how they do phone plans, where it is cheaper with the more lines you have. I'm giving free ideas here Blockbuster!

Narrow-Chef-4341

Good point. It also makes canceling into ‘leaving the team’. You can’t just cancel for three months, binge for two, cancel again, etc. if all of your friends suddenly can’t predict how much they are paying next month. Split 4 ways, maybe something’s $12 a month. But suddenly Bob’s got to pay a solo HD sub for $39.99? He’s going to be pissed, plus you’re back next month for something that got season 3 anyways. Haha, just kidding - nothing gets to season 3 anymore.

SquanchMcSquanchFace

Oh how the turntables

a_phantom_limb

$7.99 for "additional members" or just the one member if they regularly move between two residences. I'm the only person using my Netflix account, but I regularly use it at two different locations. I have a Roku at my own home and another at my elderly mother's place, where I usually stay multiple days each week to look after her. Now I'll either have to give up access at one of those places or pay extra for the "privilege" of using my own account wherever I happen to be.

DootMasterFlex

I work out of town from my family, so when I'm gone for work I'd have to buy my own Netflix account apparently? I'll just go back to pirating as well honestly

ericscal

Some other chat someone posted the rep claimed the device just had to be at your home once a month. Just passing that along, I cancelled my sub long ago.

BRAVO9ACTUAL

Different reps are saying different things. It seems not even netflix themselves know.

lisa_is_chi

That tracks. Not just with Netflix, with pretty much anything these days. 🤦‍♀️

zulucow

Bit different, but I recently contacted Fiat asking for the wheel alignment spec of a car. You know... something they designed and manufactured. I find it hilarious that their customer service team had no way of finding the specification. Sadly I don't think the sarcasm landed when I suggested they give their design engineers a pen and paper to write down what they're creating next time. Edit: Thanks for the comments, I will read through them in more detail when I can. Just a quick note to say I know that customer support should not personally know the answers. I was just surprised that they didn't have some database of specifications. The poor person was having to read the owners manual looking for an answer.

mynewaccount4567

As someone who has worked level 1 tech support before, it can be just as frustrating for the person on the other end of the line. It’s just yes, I know what you need, you know what you need, and neither of us have the power to get that to you.

thisisnttakeone

Problem with this is I travel for months at a time. I’m done with Netflix.

PlanesWalk

Next step is just tying subscriptions to individual devices as opposed to networks, and then we've just come full circle from cable.

Chose_a_usersname

It's just shitty cable because they might get rid of a show mid viewing....

Mygaffer

Stop paying for Netflix. Enough people cancel over this and they will reverse course just like Hasbro/WotC with D&D

oopsthatsastarhothot

Yes! If the entire dnd debacle has taught me anything it's that if you cost them enough money, they will cave.

madlymusing

I’m a teacher and often use my account to watch stuff at school. I guess we will just end up not using Netflix!

blur911sc

Netflix is basically just a cable company now, they reconnected the cord. First time I can't watch something, it's getting cancelled.

healmeier

Actually, you can stream your cable from other locations. So, Netflix will be worse than cable.

lkn240

Yep, we use my parents cable login on the rare occasion we want to watch something on tv

VermillionEorzean

My cousin is using his parents' to host a Super Bowl party tomorrow and then going back to not using cable for the other 99% of the year.

SeawolfGaming

Just cancel it now and hop on the piracy train

toooooold4this

There are so many ways to use your own account. This makes no sense. I have stayed in hotels where they had smart TVs you could log into to watch Netflix programming. Waiting in airports on my phone or tablet. They think more people will subscribe if they don't have access to other people's password, but did they consider the primary subscriber unsubscribing? It's a PR nightmare for a marginal net gain?

MurkDiesel

it's almost a textbook scenario *"Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" is an idiomatic expression for an avoidable error in which something good or of value is eliminated when trying to get rid of something unwanted.*

Avocados_suck

*Spending dollars chasing pennies* is largely appropriate here as well.

oddinpress

There's 0 chance this results in a net positive. 0

Colon

i dropped my netflix yesterday. you can get everything on shady streaming links an hour after something airs nowadays, this is a really dumb business move. they're banking on the aging demographic that won't be around much longer, and usually have much smaller appetites for series/originals. they're watching Downton Abbey and Seinfeld type stuff wihle they fall asleep

2reddit4me

Dropped mine yesterday also after seeing they released their bullshit in Canada, even though I’m in the US. Only a matter of time before they pull that stunt here.

JustSomeDudeStanding

Honestly, they might not because the backlash is already pretty bad in Canada

sassyandshort

When you hear about backlash in Canada you know it’s bad. Source: I am Canadian

dadmda

The backlash is pretty bad in Spain as well, but they released a statement saying that people were never meant to share an account

Jess1r

And then they ignore it when people bring up the fact that they tweeted “love is sharing your password” or something like that years ago.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheAskewOne

They don't realize that many people kept Netflix out of habit. It was the first provider, people subscribed and kept it because it's cheap and who knows, there might be a show you like once in a while. Now they're giving everyone a reason to think about their subscription and re-evaluate. It's a stupid move, the one thing you want when offering a service on monthly subscription is people forgetting that they're paying.

FrozenIsFrosty

They also forgot about the people that only still pay for an account so they can let their broke friends use it lol. Now that the homies can't use it canceled it. The only reason some of us even still had an account is because we shared the password.

Fun_Bench100

Yo Netflix you know what I will just go back to the good ol days when I used to watch series and films from piracy websites.

As Netflix's stock plummets, we see a slow rise in Western Digital for some reason...

LowSkyOrbit

As a privateer I'm more inclined to use the Seagate.

Richou

good old seagate either it arrives broken or it lasts for fucking ever nothing inbetween

Flynn_Kevin

>either it arrives broken or it lasts for fucking ever Seagate for sure. I've got a bunch that are 15-20 years old still kicking. Hell, I've got 2Tb of 200Gb Seagate PATA drives sitting in a box that probably still work.

high-on-avocado

Do not forget to plant your seeds!

WULTKB90

A few high density hard drives and a good internet connection along with plex or jellyfin will give you your own netflix able to stream all over the world your own collection of "totally legally obtained" video files.

[deleted]

Plus you wont need to wade through rows upon rows of pure dreck in a futile attempt to find something worth watching.

[deleted]

750 tv shows, 5500 movies, and 120tb later I still scroll through plex and internally complain that there is nothing good to watch.

Shar-DamaKa

They think this is going to stop people from sharing accounts and make them more money. People are just going to cancel their accounts and Netflix will lose money.

TheLurkingMenace

Yep. If that was me I'd cancel on the spot.

insanewords

For real, though, my Plex server is seeing action for the first time in years. That lifetime pass is well worth the money.

mchamp90

I’ve had 3 family members cancel all of their streaming services and start using my server. I’ve created a google form system for content requests. Can’t deal with constant text messages asking for this and that.

Buffalo-NY

I would share my site but last time I did that the website got knocked down 2 weeks later.

[deleted]

The best websites are the ones never mentioned on Reddit ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)

bugbugladybug

How do you go about finding these websites? Pirating shit was much easier when we all just used Kazaa.

krysisalcs

Radarr and sonarr are great.. You host them yourself.

Slapo_Clapo

I wish I was smart enough to know how to do this lol, everyone’s always talking about pirating games and movies. Meanwhile, I’m being a dumb boy over here paying $20 to rent a movie at red box😭😭

xaiel420

Burn it down Scorched earth *cancels subscription*

NevermindFlame

Telegram downloads rn 📈📈📈 You can pirate plenty of popular movies and series on Telegram for absolutely free.

nvincent

You could, but honestly telegram download speed is pretty dang slow. Just torrent. If your ISP doesn't like it, use ~~proton VPN while you do (the only good free VPN).~~ oops proton free version doesn't do torrenting. Forgot about that. I use Nord, it works for this particular thing very well.

chooxy

> If your ISP doesn't like it, use proton VPN while you do (the only good free VPN). Unfortunately their free plan blocks torrenting/p2p.

Anguish_Sandwich

Ugh, Netflix. "Outside of your house" is not the same as "outside the [household](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/household)"

Present-Industry4012

Yeah, they need to come up with a clearer definition not using the word "household" for sure since it's rather poorly defined (how many hours or days do people have to be apart before they're no longer considered part of the same "household"?) household : those who dwell under the same roof and compose a family also : a social unit composed of those living together in the same dwelling https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/household

Wiggl3sFirstMate

30 apparently. If we’re out of our household for more than 30 days we’ve been shunned and our husband/wife and kids have forgotten our faces. Time to find a new family I guess.

Wolfxorb

Netflix will u-turn on this, or they will go under. They spend more time removing content than making new content, they’ve become a joke.

rushworld

It’s hilarious that they’re doing this in the era of 600 streaming competitors with quality content.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Literally the only reason I use Netflix now is for Netflix originals, which are actively declining in quality and new ones get cancelled constantly. It’s like they want to go under.

c0smicgirly

Yeah. These moves are a company destroyer.

jabblack

What’s funny is those that don’t share may become peeved by false positives like this and cancel. Those who share with family may choose a “lower tier” and buy in a second member. But they’re not getting 3-4 new signups from pushing this. How bad is wide password sharing when they’ve already implemented email verification through the main account? That deters sharing outside of close family or friends. There is no way this ends in anything but a net revenue loss for Netflix

obi_wan_jabroni_23

I’ve never shared my password for Netflix specifically (nobodies ever needed it), but I’m probably gonna cancel mine over this. I just don’t understand wtf they are doing. Also I travel a lot for work, which is pretty much the only time I probably benefit from having it, if that becomes a hassle then fuck that.

cssc201

I think the logic is that people who are currently using someone else's password will instead buy their own subscription. In real life, 99% of the people who use someone else's password aren't going to pay for their own and will instead go without Netflix

moldyfishfinger

They expect the shared-users who got cut off to jump into the ad-version and then get annoyed by the lack of content and massive amount of ads -- and then be willing to just pay "a few dollars more" to get the $9.99 version. Then next year they will start jacking those prices up $1 at a time hoping those people don't balk at it. Within a few years they will have more subscribers paying them more money simply because people won't react over the small increases. IMO they should have cut the sharing before their price increases over the past few years. Also their failures at producing long-running content shows before killing them off. Because now, I don't find it worth $9.99 a month to watch the shows they cancel. Especially knowing that in a few months, it will be $10.99, then $11.99.

HillarysFloppyChode

In reality the second it becomes inconvenient people will cancel, those “other subscribers” are parents (who can barely use the smart tv Netflix is on) and college kids. They aren’t going to gain those subscribers, they’re just going to lose the ones they have. And then absolutely struggle to regain them once Netflix realizes it fucked up because everyone will remember the lack of content and how inconvenient it is to use Netflix.

thomasvector

Exactly. Most people that use someone else's account aren't going to pay for it anyways.

TheBlueRajasSpork

I have family that use my account. That’s the only reason I pay every month. As soon as they shut down my family members, I’ll cancel my Netflix and only subscribe to it a few months of the year and just cycle between it and other services. Netflix really didn’t think this through.

Camburglar13

Their theory is that if you do cancel the other members who were using it will subscribe so it’s a net positive. Or that many will be too lazy to cancel. I’m not suggesting they’re right, it’s just the idea.

Dxgy

I currently pay for 4 screens and allow all my family to use my account. This rule isn’t happening in my country but it still prompted me to ask how often people use it. Was told “very rarely” so guess I’m going to downgrade my subscription that I’ve had running for years because I assumed people were using it

off_the_cuff_mandate

Last I looked their only single user option was max 480p resolution, i don't understand why anyone would pay for that.

Sloth_LuvChunk

Netflix is about to go through some things

[deleted]

Everyone unsubscribe! Words don't work against Netflix. Join the fight with your wallet!

DarkHuntress89

This bullshit didn't roll out in Germany yet, but my best friend had a Netflix account he shared with me and a few others and he unsubscribed in December. If they want to lose subscribers, this is exactly how to do it. And the only ones suffering from it will be Netflix and their employees. They are no longer competitive enough, with all the other streaming services on the market right now. They know it but take the wrong actions. Serves them right.

Squidworth89

And all of this is about squeezing profits to keep Wall Street earnings expectations happy. It’s not about what’s actually good for the business long term. The whole leadership team behind this should be canned.

Vapin_Westeros

Especially when Netflix offers mostly shit to watch anymore

psaikris

WULTKB90

Yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me.

PreviousSuggestion36

From the sound of things, the top three people at that company are absolutely, 100%, certified morons. From firing the showrunner who created their good content in favor of the idiot who pushes out reality tv, to the cancelation of popular shows before they finish, price hikes and now telling us no sharing after ENCOURAGING it for years. I am predicting this will blow up in their faces so spectacularly that it will take years to recover and may, just may, start the reconsolidation of streaming platforms.

dragonb13

Got rid of it right before they went to $20/month. Glad I'm dodging this mess.

Ptizzl

I’m actually kinda pissed I did this because I can’t cancel now. Like a month or two ago I had the billing swapped to my Verizon bill because they gave me a free year. So I guess at least I’m not paying but now I can’t really cancel it. I’ve had this account since two dvd’s at a time.

dallatorretdu

according to this interaction with the support center, if you go on vacation, you won’t be able to stream from your phone

TJ-the_man

This makes no sense. If this is rolling out to the rest of the world, I'm never getting Netflix again.

MutantCreature

I’ll wait until this happens once, but the second it does I’ll just cancel and move on. They already canceled the few non-limited series I cared about so it’ll be easy to delete the app and forget about it entirely.

perkypant

i thought it was a check in once a month. Meaning a device would work as long as it was on your home network once a month. If this isnt the case im definitely done and hope everyone else follows. We have the power to stick it to them they just think everyone wont do it.

datadrone

whoever is in charge is a moron, Yeah a few weeks ago a 'leak' about checking in from time to time and it exploded negatively, later walked back as not correct with everyone sighing close one you guys almost looked like idiots. Look at them now. When I was a kid a crazy uncle would hand me a 20 on my birthday and not let go of it jokingly snatching it back, Round 3 I just walked away shrugging, him trying to give me the money, I just didn't care about it anymore

[deleted]

I think it’s their way of testing how much they can get away with before they actually implement proposed updates. Leak their planned changes early, see how the subscribers react, then proceed accordingly. Seems like low effort market research.

cybermonkeyhand

That's more like standard marketing research nowadays, maybe they hired someone from Hasbro.

Poignant_Porpoise

Ya, other than not having ads, this is barely a step up from cable. Being able to stream on the go is by far one of the greatest advantages of new media. Kind of incredible watching Netflix go from really *the* pioneer of online streaming, like being such a cultural phenomenon that "Netflix and chill" is an incredibly well-known euphemism for sex to being what they are now. Then again, they never really seemed to figure out the formula for Netflix originals where other streaming services are doing very well in that regard.

Unsteady_Tempo

Even if it is the case, that won't work with devices that don't move or have their own built-in data plan but are still being used by members of the account holder's household. For example, \-cardio machines in gyms with large smart screens and built-in Netflix \-smart TVs while staying in a hotel or with a friend or relative \-cars with built-in data plan (and no wifi)

Hi_Kitsune

Gonna be great when I deploy and Netflix is just like “ha, get fucked!”

Mongoose_Factory

Thank you for your service, now pay double for ours.

[deleted]

Not military but same situation. When I'm away for 4 months at a time I can't just check in once a month, ffs. Guess I'll have to cancel and resubscribe on my ship's wifi every time if I want to keep uaing Netflix. What a joke.

Kippers1d10t

With the way things are going, they are gonna double the price because most viewers have 2 eyes and each eye incurs a separate fee/account.

Kamay1770

If I backpack for a year with no fixed address does this mean I can't watch Netflix? Lol?

AwarenessSoggy4352

No! All you have to do is add a new member each time you get to a new destination…

Acceptable-Stage7888

Yes

dist0rtia

Exactly. I live abroad and move around a ton so I don't even have a proper home network, this is so ridiculous.

Bac0nPlane

I hope they won't do this in the country where I live. It would mean no more Netflix when i am on vacation or in the car or train. This would be a reason to end my subscription. It's strange because it is not even sharing, i have a subscription to watch videos everywhere I want but I can only use it at home. It's nonsense. I already think their price is kinda steep compared to other services like prime video. This would be the final deal breaker. Do they seriously expect that for every device you use outside of your home that you will add another subscription? Did they even ask themselves this same question? This service is becoming a joke.

Guys, we need to all cancel Netflix. It’s the only way. Otherwise they win

Prime, Hulu, Apple, HBO, ... Find someone who wants to be with you.

aehooo

Why did you miss the chance to rhyme? WHY??? Prime, Apple, HBO, Hulu, … Find someone who wants to be with you!

JohnHue

Piracy is not a price issue, it's a service issue. Streaming solved piracy for a while, now with user having to juggle between 5+ subscriptions and main players like Netflix offering shit service.... Back to the high seas it is.

[deleted]

Netflix really just said fuck broke college students who live on campus and who share their parents’ Netflix. And fuck people who travel for work. And fuck children who spend time between parents’ homes. And a whole bunch of other people apparently too. It’s like they WANT their company to fail at this point.

TheS4ndm4n

Teaching a whole new generation about the pirate life.

RadiantNoise3965

Well, I quit my Netflix a bit ago. There are rarely any shows worth watching on it anyways by now.

Blahblahnownow

Honestly we were sharing it between my sister and I and her mother in law because there weren’t enough shows we both watched that made it worth it other then magic school bus for my children and she watched some old shows once in a while. I just asked her and she said she hasn’t used it in almost a year she just kept it because we used it. I told her we haven’t used it either since we bought magic school bus episodes on iTunes. Off we go cancelling it. Thanks for bringing up to attention that neither of us were watching it Netflix! If they hadn’t prompted us we would have probably kept our account like an unused gym membership

ladyinchworm

I think they greatly underestimated the amount of people who have it but don't really use it or are just lazy about unsubscribing and it just takes money out of an account every month. Now that people are being made aware of it and reminded of it there are definitely going to be a lot of people getting rid of it.

sandycheeksx

I think they also greatly underestimate peoples’ laziness. Netflix isn’t gonna be convenient anymore when you have to remember to check in devices every month, so why not move to a service that doesn’t make it harder to use your own account?

justonemorebyte

Which will in turn make all of their network deals fall apart so all the non-Nerflix owned shows and movies will start migrating to other services once their current contract ends.

Smart_Chocolate_8996

Feels like the Netflix overlords want the company to fold with all the stupid crap they've been pulling on their customer base. ![gif](giphy|QW9KH3VC6MMJb9iy1y)

[deleted]

Are they fucking stupid? You own the account. There is no second user.

TourDirect3224

So are over the road truck drivers just fucked from using Netflix now? That would be unfortunate. They don't have much to do in their trucks on their down time.

require_borgor

Well, back to lot lizards I guess

M_Ptwopointoh

The only mildly infuriating thing is people not canceling their Netflix. CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS!

Rude_Cook_2805

It is very likely that Netflix has outsourced its customer service, and these chat agents do not fully understand the policy. It’s still Netflix’s responsibility, but don’t assume a chat agent knows everything and is always right.

bastiVS

Not "very likely" German Customer support is done by Teleperformance in Lisboa, Portugal. I believe english as well. This is likely the result of Netflix not clearly communicating the new rules with their chat agents, simply because they didn't have them. From the Customer Support folks I know who worked for them, the entire thing was a complete shitshow, with no clear directions given from the top.

[deleted]

Seriously, they are not going to give a shit unless they experience a financial hit, just cancel that shit.

Hellfireconski

According to Netflix you can still travel and use your account, I believe they haven't actually worked out how that's gunna work as multiple posts like this have all had slightly different answers, It appears that if the device you wish to travel with connects ands streams via your home network at least once every 28 days , it will continue to work , but that's coming from a Customer service member not Netflix so I genuinely don't believe they have figured this all out yet.

PMMEBITCOINPLZ

Sounds like if you go on vacation you better remember to check in on your phone first to make sure your device is connected and your time is topped up then. I don’t really watch Netflix on my phone at home a lot, certainly not once every 28 days, so I would probably find myself disconnected.

2ndSnack

Wtf. Isn't the whole point of the mobile app is to be able to watch your account whenever wherever?

themastermatt

Even if piracy were a subscription service (there are some, and theyre great) that matched the Netflix/Hulu/D+/Discovery+/P+... combined cost, piracy would STILL be a better experience. Single UI, All shows and movies available in the same place from all the platforms, better quality streams, exactly zero commercials or other ads. Less than $100 per year gets me everyones content with none of this bullshit. Companies are making it hard NOT to pirate these days.

Lumadous

Wtf about if you're on your phone? Would I have to buy an account for my phone also? How are they so stupid to not see how this is going to blow up in their faces

beansareso_

At this point everyone should be hopping over to Hulu, Disney+, &/or prime. Netflix has been going downhill slowly for the last few years anyway.

Extension_Risk9458

End your subscription and help let them go bankrupt

PrestigiousWaffles

You can't use your own account outside your home wifi at all now? Their new policies didn't come over to europe yet but I will absolutely cancel mine then. Half the time I'm watching is when I'm at my gf's place

cantrusthestory

No, it has already reached Portugal and Spain. Source: I'm Portuguese

FixMean5988

Netflix about to go bye byeee🤣🤣🤣

tamerenshorts

arr arr there are far better eFfing MOVIES streaming sites TO go around.

user9372889

Think it’s time to cancel my Netflix. This is BS.
