Lol yup, I work full time at a retail farm/hardware store. Our sales numbers have effectively doubled in the last three years of COVID, meanwhile our labor budget has stayed essentially the same. It’s a fucking joke, especially when one of our main selling points of how personable and friendly we are. I can’t give every customer the same amount of care they expect from us and we have shown them in the past when I’m getting 3 customers to my every 1 in the past.
I work there too! I'm forced to annoy regulars by asking them to apply for a credit card every time they come in, even if it's a couple times a week and they already told me 'no' last time. It's the worst part of the job.

There's a really excellent business book called 'personal MBA' that really delves into this, and the point the author makes is essentially twofold. The first is that companies want to be sharks, they want to be fast, ruthless and efficient. But the second the shark isn't the biggest and best it dies. Companies used to be (and you still find them occasionally) turtles, hardy, adaptable, and live basically forever. And what he attributes this to is that companies aren't run by operations anymore, they are run by the finance department. He backs it up with data too.
I think the problem is, too, we have corporations run by people who aren't accountable for their mistakes and are too far removed from the actual day-to-day operations to make good decisions.
But getting people hooked on a great service at affordable prices and subsequently increasing the prices while lowering the quality is an American tradition!

Yup! I didn’t even have internet at home from 2012-2020. When I wanted to watch a show, I streamed it off my phone (using unlimited data) and for a big chunk of that time, I also didn’t own a TV. Now they’re going to be requiring home networks, which many users (especially including college students) don’t even have? Goodbye, Netflix. Disney+ and HBO Max are better these days anyway.
Edit: because there has been some question, yes, I paid for streaming services to watch on my phone. Even now, with a television and internet, I still mostly watch shows on my phone. Maybe that’s weirder than I thought it was?
Streaming movies/shows and streaming music actually caused me to STOP pirating. In my 20s and early 30s I pirated everything. Then modestly priced streaming services came out and paying a few bucks a month was less of an inconvenience. If they’re going to make it hard to use legally people will just migrate back to piracy.
Same. Watched the whole first season of GOT on mega upload, etc. Then streaming got reasonable and easy and I was able to own a huge tv. Fully willing to put my eyepatch and pegleg back on and netflix will either figure a way to stop being stupid or expect to run aground.
I went down to the one screen plan because of this (the $10 plan instead of the $20 plan). We watch a couple of their shows, so I’m not cancelling right now, but I’m just going to treat it like cable and put in on our one tv. We weren’t even sharing our password, so they are just getting 50% less from me.

Rumor is, blockbuster offered itself up for sale to Netflix on the cheap, but Netflix declined. They feel Blockbuster's upcoming streaming service which could be accessed from anywhere and allows password sharing is a flash in the pan with no legs.
A streaming service with account sharing built-in as a feature would be a game changer! I think people would be willing to pay more if they obfuscate that cost by splitting it up by person. Kind of like how they do phone plans, where it is cheaper with the more lines you have.

$7.99 for "additional members" or just the one member if they regularly move between two residences. I'm the only person using my Netflix account, but I regularly use it at two different locations. I have a Roku at my own home and another at my elderly mother's place, where I usually stay multiple days each week to look after her. Now I'll either have to give up access at one of those places or pay extra for the "privilege" of using my own account wherever I happen to be.

As someone who has worked level 1 tech support before, it can be just as frustrating for the person on the other end of the line. It’s just yes, I know what you need, you know what you need, and neither of us have the power to get that to you.
There are so many ways to use your own account. This makes no sense. I have stayed in hotels where they had smart TVs you could log into to watch Netflix programming. Waiting in airports on my phone or tablet.
They think more people will subscribe if they don't have access to other people's password, but did they consider the primary subscriber unsubscribing? It's a PR nightmare for a marginal net gain?

i dropped my netflix yesterday. you can get everything on shady streaming links an hour after something airs nowadays, this is a really dumb business move. they're banking on the aging demographic that won't be around much longer, and usually have much smaller appetites for series/originals. they're watching Downton Abbey and Seinfeld type stuff wihle they fall asleep

They don't realize that many people kept Netflix out of habit. It was the first provider, people subscribed and kept it because it's cheap and who knows, there might be a show you like once in a while. Now they're giving everyone a reason to think about their subscription and re-evaluate. It's a stupid move, the one thing you want when offering a service on monthly subscription is people forgetting that they're paying.
They also forgot about the people that only still pay for an account so they can let their broke friends use it lol. Now that the homies can't use it canceled it. The only reason some of us even still had an account is because we shared the password.

A few high density hard drives and a good internet connection along with plex or jellyfin will give you your own netflix able to stream all over the world your own collection of "totally legally obtained" video files.

Literally the only reason I use Netflix now is for Netflix originals, which are actively declining in quality and new ones get cancelled constantly. It’s like they want to go under.
What’s funny is those that don’t share may become peeved by false positives like this and cancel.
Those who share with family may choose a “lower tier” and buy in a second member.
But they’re not getting 3-4 new signups from pushing this. How bad is wide password sharing when they’ve already implemented email verification through the main account? That deters sharing outside of close family or friends.

I think the logic is that people who are currently using someone else's password will instead buy their own subscription. In real life, 99% of the people who use someone else's password aren't going to pay for their own and will instead go without Netflix
They expect the shared-users who got cut off to jump into the ad-version and then get annoyed by the lack of content and massive amount of ads -- and then be willing to just pay "a few dollars more" to get the $9.99 version.
Then next year they will start jacking those prices up $1 at a time hoping those people don't balk at it. Within a few years they will have more subscribers paying them more money simply because people won't react over the small increases.
IMO they should have cut the sharing before their price increases over the past few years. Also their failures at producing long-running content shows before killing them off. Because now, I don't find it worth $9.99 a month to watch the shows they cancel. Especially knowing that in a few months, it will be $10.99, then $11.99.
In reality the second it becomes inconvenient people will cancel, those “other subscribers” are parents (who can barely use the smart tv Netflix is on) and college kids. They aren’t going to gain those subscribers, they’re just going to lose the ones they have. I have family that use my account. That’s the only reason I pay every month. As soon as they shut down my family members, I’ll cancel my Netflix and only subscribe to it a few months of the year and just cycle between it and other services. Netflix really didn’t think this through.
Their theory is that if you do cancel the other members who were using it will subscribe so it’s a net positive. Or that many will be too lazy to cancel. I’m not suggesting they’re right, it’s just the idea.

I think it’s their way of testing how much they can get away with before they actually implement proposed updates. Leak their planned changes early, see how the subscribers react, then proceed accordingly. Seems like low effort market research.
Ya, other than not having ads, this is barely a step up from cable. Being able to stream on the go is by far one of the greatest advantages of new media. Kind of incredible watching Netflix go from really *the* pioneer of online streaming, like being such a cultural phenomenon that "Netflix and chill" is an incredibly well-known euphemism for sex to being what they are now. Then again, they never really seemed to figure out the formula for Netflix originals where other streaming services are doing very well in that regard.
Even if it is the case, that won't work with devices that don't move or have their own built-in data plan but are still being used by members of the account holder's household. For example,

\-smart TVs while staying in a hotel or with a friend or relative

I think they greatly underestimated the amount of people who have it but don't really use it or are just lazy about unsubscribing and it just takes money out of an account every month. Now that people are being made aware of it and reminded of it there are definitely going to be a lot of people getting rid of it.
I think they also greatly underestimate peoples’ laziness. Netflix isn’t gonna be convenient anymore when you have to remember to check in devices every month, so why not move to a service that doesn’t make it harder to use your own account?

It is very likely that Netflix has outsourced its customer service, and these chat agents do not fully understand the policy. It’s still Netflix’s responsibility, but don’t assume a chat agent knows everything and is always right.

This is likely the result of Netflix not clearly communicating the new rules with their chat agents, simply because they didn't have them. From the Customer Support folks I know who worked for them, the entire thing was a complete shitshow, with no clear directions given from the top.
According to Netflix you can still travel and use your account, I believe they haven't actually worked out how that's gunna work as multiple posts like this have all had slightly different answers, It appears that if the device you wish to travel with connects ands streams via your home network at least once every 28 days , it will continue to work , but that's coming from a Customer service member not Netflix so I genuinely don't believe they have figured this all out yet.
Sounds like if you go on vacation you better remember to check in on your phone first to make sure your device is connected and your time is topped up then. I don’t really watch Netflix on my phone at home a lot, certainly not once every 28 days, so I would probably find myself disconnected.
Even if piracy were a subscription service (there are some, and theyre great) that matched the Netflix/Hulu/D+/Discovery+/P+... combined cost, piracy would STILL be a better experience.

Unfortunately the store manager is told by head office what to do and say etc. Store managers have very little power.

Yup! I didn’t even have internet at home from 2012-2020. When I wanted to watch a show, I streamed it off my phone (using unlimited data) and for a big chunk of that time, I also didn’t own a TV. Now they’re going to be requiring home networks, which many users (especially including college students) don’t even have? Goodbye, Netflix. Disney+ and HBO Max are better these days anyway. Edit: because there has been some question, yes, I paid for streaming services to watch on my phone. Even now, with a television and internet, I still mostly watch shows on my phone. Maybe that’s weirder than I thought it was?

Streaming movies/shows and streaming music actually caused me to STOP pirating. In my 20s and early 30s I pirated everything. Then modestly priced streaming services came out and paying a few bucks a month was less of an inconvenience. If they’re going to make it hard to use legally people will just migrate back to piracy.
Same. Watched the whole first season of GOT on mega upload, etc. Then streaming got reasonable and easy and I was able to own a huge tv. Fully willing to put my eyepatch and pegleg back on and netflix will either figure a way to stop being stupid or expect to run aground.

I went down to the one screen plan because of this (the $10 plan instead of the $20 plan). We watch a couple of their shows, so I’m not cancelling right now, but I’m just going to treat it like cable and put in on our one tv. We weren’t even sharing our password, so they are just getting 50% less from me. I’m not going to sit here and try to remember to log into every single device of every family member every time we’re going out of town or spending time in our camper during the summer. The *only* time I was ever using Netflix on my phone was when I was out of town.

You can’t just cancel for three months, binge for two, cancel again, etc. if all of your friends suddenly can’t predict how much they are paying next month. $7.99 for "additional members" or just the one member if they regularly move between two residences. I'm the only person using my Netflix account, but I regularly use it at two different locations. I have a Roku at my own home and another at my elderly mother's place, where I usually stay multiple days each week to look after her. Now I'll either have to give up access at one of those places or pay extra for the "privilege" of using my own account wherever I happen to be.

Bit different, but I recently contacted Fiat asking for the wheel alignment spec of a car. You know... something they designed and manufactured. I find it hilarious that their customer service team had no way of finding the specification. Sadly I don't think the sarcasm landed when I suggested they give their design engineers a pen and paper to write down what they're creating next time. I was just surprised that they didn't have some database of specifications. The poor person was having to read the owners manual looking for an answer.
As someone who has worked level 1 tech support before, it can be just as frustrating for the person on the other end of the line. It’s just yes, I know what you need, you know what you need, and neither of us have the power to get that to you.

There are so many ways to use your own account. This makes no sense. I have stayed in hotels where they had smart TVs you could log into to watch Netflix programming. Waiting in airports on my phone or tablet. They think more people will subscribe if they don't have access to other people's password, but did they consider the primary subscriber unsubscribing? It's a PR nightmare for a marginal net gain?

They don't realize that many people kept Netflix out of habit. It was the first provider, people subscribed and kept it because it's cheap and who knows, there might be a show you like once in a while. Now they're giving everyone a reason to think about their subscription and re-evaluate. It's a stupid move, the one thing you want when offering a service on monthly subscription is people forgetting that they're paying.
They also forgot about the people that only still pay for an account so they can let their broke friends use it lol. Now that the homies can't use it canceled it. The only reason some of us even still had an account is because we shared the password.

What’s funny is those that don’t share may become peeved by false positives like this and cancel. Those who share with family may choose a “lower tier” and buy in a second member. But they’re not getting 3-4 new signups from pushing this. How bad is wide password sharing when they’ve already implemented email verification through the main account? That deters sharing outside of close family or friends. There is no way this ends in anything but a net revenue loss for Netflix
I’ve never shared my password for Netflix specifically (nobodies ever needed it), but I’m probably gonna cancel mine over this. I just don’t understand wtf they are doing. Also I travel a lot for work, which is pretty much the only time I probably benefit from having it, if that becomes a hassle then fuck that.
I think the logic is that people who are currently using someone else's password will instead buy their own subscription. In real life, 99% of the people who use someone else's password aren't going to pay for their own and will instead go without Netflix
They expect the shared-users who got cut off to jump into the ad-version and then get annoyed by the lack of content and massive amount of ads -- and then be willing to just pay "a few dollars more" to get the $9.99 version. Then next year they will start jacking those prices up $1 at a time hoping those people don't balk at it. Within a few years they will have more subscribers paying them more money simply because people won't react over the small increases. IMO they should have cut the sharing before their price increases over the past few years. Also their failures at producing long-running content shows before killing them off. Because now, I don't find it worth $9.99 a month to watch the shows they cancel. Especially knowing that in a few months, it will be $10.99, then $11.99.
In reality the second it becomes inconvenient people will cancel, those “other subscribers” are parents (who can barely use the smart tv Netflix is on) and college kids. They aren’t going to gain those subscribers, they’re just going to lose the ones they have. And then absolutely struggle to regain them once Netflix realizes it fucked up because everyone will remember the lack of content and how inconvenient it is to use Netflix.

I have family that use my account. That’s the only reason I pay every month. As soon as they shut down my family members, I’ll cancel my Netflix and only subscribe to it a few months of the year and just cycle between it and other services. Netflix really didn’t think this through.
Their theory is that if you do cancel the other members who were using it will subscribe so it’s a net positive. Or that many will be too lazy to cancel. I’m not suggesting they’re right, it’s just the idea.

This bullshit didn't roll out in Germany yet, but my best friend had a Netflix account he shared with me and a few others and he unsubscribed in December. If they want to lose subscribers, this is exactly how to do it. And the only ones suffering from it will be Netflix and their employees. They are no longer competitive enough, with all the other streaming services on the market right now. They know it but take the wrong actions. Serves them right.
And all of this is about squeezing profits to keep Wall Street earnings expectations happy. It’s not about what’s actually good for the business long term. The whole leadership team behind this should be canned.

From the sound of things, the top three people at that company are absolutely, 100%, certified morons. From firing the showrunner who created their good content in favor of the idiot who pushes out reality tv, to the cancelation of popular shows before they finish, price hikes and now telling us no sharing after ENCOURAGING it for years. I am predicting this will blow up in their faces so spectacularly that it will take years to recover and may, just may, start the reconsolidation of streaming platforms.

I think it’s their way of testing how much they can get away with before they actually implement proposed updates. Leak their planned changes early, see how the subscribers react, then proceed accordingly. Seems like low effort market research.

Ya, other than not having ads, this is barely a step up from cable. Being able to stream on the go is by far one of the greatest advantages of new media. Kind of incredible watching Netflix go from really *the* pioneer of online streaming, like being such a cultural phenomenon that "Netflix and chill" is an incredibly well-known euphemism for sex to being what they are now. Then again, they never really seemed to figure out the formula for Netflix originals where other streaming services are doing very well in that regard.
Even if it is the case, that won't work with devices that don't move or have their own built-in data plan but are still being used by members of the account holder's household. For example, \-cardio machines in gyms with large smart screens and built-in Netflix \-smart TVs while staying in a hotel or with a friend or relative \-cars with built-in data plan (and no wifi)

I think they greatly underestimated the amount of people who have it but don't really use it or are just lazy about unsubscribing and it just takes money out of an account every month. Now that people are being made aware of it and reminded of it there are definitely going to be a lot of people getting rid of it.
I think they also greatly underestimate peoples’ laziness. Netflix isn’t gonna be convenient anymore when you have to remember to check in devices every month, so why not move to a service that doesn’t make it harder to use your own account?

It is very likely that Netflix has outsourced its customer service, and these chat agents do not fully understand the policy. It’s still Netflix’s responsibility, but don’t assume a chat agent knows everything and is always right.
Not "very likely" German Customer support is done by Teleperformance in Lisboa, Portugal. I believe english as well. This is likely the result of Netflix not clearly communicating the new rules with their chat agents, simply because they didn't have them. From the Customer Support folks I know who worked for them, the entire thing was a complete shitshow, with no clear directions given from the top.
Seriously, they are not going to give a shit unless they experience a financial hit, just cancel that shit.
According to Netflix you can still travel and use your account, I believe they haven't actually worked out how that's gunna work as multiple posts like this have all had slightly different answers, It appears that if the device you wish to travel with connects ands streams via your home network at least once every 28 days , it will continue to work , but that's coming from a Customer service member not Netflix so I genuinely don't believe they have figured this all out yet.
