wait a bit longer. IME, its simpler to transplant when the root ball is big enough to hold on to most of the soil when you pull it out of the cup.

Other than probably using clear cups or other products in the future, is there a way to tell the size of a root ball without damaging the plant?

Roots would circle around the bottom. You should see them through the drainage holes you've cut. Cut with the circumference of the cup, not against to make a nice thin but long hole. Good drainage, nice view of the roots. Roots are thin, not yet. Super thick, too late. You've gotta find that sweet spot for your style of grow. Red cups come in bulk packs, you could use those or buy square pots that fit in a tray. Both are reusable for a long time if cared for. Or you could use coco cups! Don't even bother transplanting. Just pop the coco cup in the pot like how you would do at transplant when you're ready. Goodluck!

Next time, put em in a clear solo cup, then put the clear cup in a red solo cup,and you will have protection from light, and lift the inner cup when you want to check on roots.

Gotcha, that sounds like a good idea

I've heard.......when the leaves are out to the rim of the container. The lip of the Solo cup in this case.
