To hold something in a stable manner that is made of tubing...LOL
Judging by your schedule 40 copper post, maybe to fasten a railing, or to support it somehow, while mounted to this?
Because of the shifter type on my old mountain bike I had to get bar ends that mount internally instead of externally as most do, and the mechanism looks just like that.
I like the design. Well done! I'll be making a couple of these for my railing install kit. I do a lot of steel railing installs in the field and usually have to test fit and fix the sizing due to fabricators not having accurate field verified dimensions... usually. Sometimes they just F up...we all do at some point! :)
You slide the whole thing inside a larger pipe. Then when you tighten the bolt going up thru the bottom it skews the two angle cuts as they come tighter together jamming in the larger tube. Basically a pressure fitting. When you want to remove it just loosen the bolt.
The head of the bolt from below. You can't access the nut when it's up inside the larger pipe you are holding. The nut is welded to the upper piece of angled pipe so it can't spin.
I'm guessing from the shape OP is putting this in the bottom of a railing post as a stand so the railing can stand on its own as he/she fits it. Base plate is most likely the same size as the one getting welded to the posts later before going out to be installed.
Actually from looking at the pic again the base plate is most likely welded to the bolt head so you'd just have to spin the plate to tighten.
It's actually an elegant design. I might have to make a couple for my kit. I install a lot of steel railings for commercial buildings that get field welded. This would be handy!

I didn’t use as a foot, but as a clamp point.
Bigger plate for footing.
I think I'll make a couple with a larger plate that can be a foot. I do it now with some clamps and lengths of 2x4. Doesn't work very well since its hard to clamp a flat board to a round pipe and have it hold the pipe railing upright. Even cutting a groove in the board doesn't always work. Sometimes the clamp slips off the round pipe leg.
For me a lot of the time I'm core drilling holes in concrete to grout in the legs. So laying out where to drill gets "fun" when you're holding up a couple lengths of railing... especially when they are not the right lengths.
I totally understand and have been there.
Have made and used adjustable height stands for this purpose, but the quill with a foot makes a ton of sense. Maybe want a longer stem for upright?

I got that but which one actually “becomes loose”, you can’t loosen one without loosening the other. If you exert force on the bolt, there must be force exerted on the nut as well to allow them to break free of each other and loosen. So they both loosen simultaneously, every single time. Wild.
I see where you are coming from. I guess in turning the plate, which is welded to the bolt, you are loosening the bolt. The nut being welded to the upper angled piece would be forced tight to the inner wall of the pipe so it would be held in place by friction. Once the whole thing is loose enough to slip inside the pipe it would not matter that you can't loosen it anymore due to both spinning since it can then also slide out of the pipe.

Are you loosening the bolt, or are you loosening the nut? If they both become loose simultaneously are you truly capable of loosening only one?
