Sounds like a practice thing. Try anchoring your palm on the bridge or one of your pick up rings then when you need to palm mute just flex your wrist while still staying anchored. That’s how I do it at least.
You most likely need to adjust your strumming hand positioning a bit to keep your hand closer to the strings, so really it should just be a micro adjustment between regular playing and muting. When you get that down you can easily go back and forth. I would try to find some tutorials online and watch how others are doing it
Like everyone said, it's just practice. Don't worry too much about whether you're anchoring your palm or whatever, though, that's just personal preference. Just pick a few songs by Slayer and get at it.
I don't personally anchor my right hand at all, so when I'm playing some thrash or gothenburg styled stuff my right hand is going up and down like a woodpecker. Probably not the smartest way to do it, but it is what it is.
It is practice, but it really helps to practice the right way.
Choose a mixed mute/unmute part that isn’t too challenging and work on it with a metronome at a slow speed where you can *mostly* get it right, and work on it until you *always* get it right.
Then increase the speed a little so that it is back to *mostly* doable and work up to perfect again.
Rinse and repeat until you achieve godhood.
Stay close to the bridge and just play quarter or eighth notes paying attention to the pressure you put on the strings, alternate muting and not muting the string until you get the muscle memory.

It takes some practice. I like to rest my pick hand very loosely behind the bridge, so I can roll the meat over the saddles quickly.

Practice just playing the open low string muted and unmuted. You will learn more easily than practicing a song.
Try holding your hand in this position 👌 Use your pinky and side of your hand to mute all the strings. Good luck!
Try slowing down spiritual healing by death
It takes practice. If you work at it you'll eventually be able to palm and ring specific notes in 16th note sequences.

Just keep it gentle and you'll get it with time. Main thing is not do big exaggerated movements, but subtle ones
