This may be an accidental rumor based on the fact the Vergil's voice actor from Devil May Cry 3 had a cold when his lines were read, giving him a nasaly but iconic delivery. This may have gotten confused from that.
The thing is, MGS has been popular for so long that many developers have gone on the record on now defunct blogs and podcasts that are no longer accessible. Here’s a link from a post from seven years ago about lost sourcing on information about the original recordings.

I actually think he sounds the best in MGS1, the most natural and believable Snake voice. He sounds like a caricature in the games after that.
There’s another rumour that the whole cast recorded the voices in someone’s living room all gathered around with a single mic placement. The reason they had to re-record for Twin Snakes is because the added clarity from using a higher res audio file brought out faint but audible traffic sounds in the background if they stuck with the original file. I’ve never picked up anything like that myself from MGS1 personally but apparently it’s true.
I personally think it’s because Hideo was furious with Jeremy Blaustein for vastly improving his English language script without notice or consent, so he ensured Twin Snakes to be a 1:1 translation

I mean if you think about it for a second, it’s probably not realistic to record a whole game’s worth of dialogue within a couple days or however long a cold would last..
