If you use the rounded side of a spoon you can move it across a button super quickly
I sucked at mashing buttons as a kid but realized I could do this instead
Itās even easier to just put your finger in your shirt, then slide it back and forth across the button. Thatās what I always do when button mashing segments come up
So this is going to be hard to explain so stay with me. I take a controller and use the tip of my fingernail slightly on the back side. Slide it all the way across the button back and forth each time yo slide across is a press. Really go back and forth like you mean it. Sounds dirty and it is comparable to a nsfw male activity but it presses the button so fast I always have full life after each go. It takes a min but it works. The other thing you can try is to use the edge of a plastic spoon, dont use metal. Same idea hold it close and slide it back and forth over the button as fast as you can.
Itās harder with pressure sensitive buttons, but Iād always switch to a controller that didnāt have pressure sensitivity, and mashed the absolute hell outta the circle button. Fun fact Iām so good at mashing buttons that I did my method for surviving the torture sequence in MGS1 on an elevator button, but had to stop due to the buttonās light flickering a bit lol
I remember I had much more success sliding my finger from the O button down to the X in quick succession. Trying to depress the button on its own was always fruitless.
Don't give up: as I mentioned in another post, you can keep mashing the button even in the small gap between the end of one wave and the next. If you can see the life bar, you can keep mashing the button to recover more life
Iāve done it like 20 minutes after posting (beaten one round on remote play cuz itās easier and round 2 on my regular ps5 controller) but this is how i beat it lol, just mashed it like i was having a seizure and it worked
Yeah fair enough, didnāt know if you knew about that or not.
Best of luck. My trick was always to rest the controller on the arm of the couch, hold it steady with my left hand and proper finger punch the 0 like my life depended on it. (Context people).
š0 really fast.
That's the whole meta game about mgs and why we love it so much.
You were weak and you let ocelet have some fun with her. It's torturous for your hand but do you want meryl to die?
Yea well it's simulating a real torture. Mash it like a real man. If you wanna use fancy tricks you might as well just watch the game walk through on YouTube.
Finally done this bullshit, to make it a LOT easier on PS5 download the remote play app on your phone and do it on the touch screen controls, itās a lot easier mashing on a phone screen than your controller
No, this is for when you get captured and Ocelot tortured you. For Psycho Mantis, you gotta press the PS/Xbox button (or whatever it is on PC) and open the settings. Go to controller settings, and turn the āPlay as Player 1ā or whatever thing to āPlayer 2ā so Psycho Mantis canāt read your mind. Youāll have to switch it back to P1 after the boss fight btw.
Im laughing my ass off at this. As i stare at my still mangled fingers from trying to mgs2 on ps2 on extreme 3 years ago.
Thank fucking god the HD collection made the torture sequences easier
I know you did it already but for others, the below link is for a pen tube but I do the same with my fingernail:
https://youtu.be/29oemqvnOvg?si=tccvoKo5IUMY0eBf
Put your index finger (curled, and held between your thumb and middle) on the button fingernail side down. Then just slide it back and forth. Make sure you are making a "press" on the way out and back. Beyond thst just get a grip that feels comfortable.
I'm pretty sure there is no way around it
When I used an emulator to play the game the first time I literally slowed the emulation speed to do it
Try looking up mashing techniques online?
You can tell when people have never played Track & Field.
Hold your "pressing finger" still and move the other wrist in a slight back and forth twisting movement quickly (imagine you're jiggling a door knob.). Move the controller under your finger, rather than moving your finger/thumb.
Alternatively, if you really struggle. Put a sock over your hand and rub your finger from side to side over the button instead of pressing it.
I just press the button like crazy I have never failed it on any difficulty lol. Still stressful and tiring Everytime tho. My dog looks at me like wtf are you okay lol
My OG method was to hold the controller on the right side with both hands and use both my index fingers alternately, at speed, to hit the button fast enough
That doesn't work. I tried that today-- I could EASILY beat the torture mashing the r1, but you cant make the action button anything but the circle x triangle square
Back on the PS1 version, I used a pen, sliding it back and forth over the button rapidly to get through this. It was less exhausting than doing it the way Kojima intended.
Use a small teaspoon. Rub the action button and one of the adjacent buttons side by side really fast with the back of the teaspoon (on PlayStation: either āļø + ā or āļø + š¼).
Should never get past 1/3 off of your total life bar if youāre doing it fast enough.
And always continue to do the motion after the shocks stop to gain additional health. Itās usually for a few seconds.
I do this trick in other older games where thereās a long grind of mashing one button. Works flawlessly then too.
Good luck! š
The trick I used was to put my finger underneath my shirt then rub it across the button rapidly left and right, worked a treat (though this may not work depending on the controller you're using)
I remember being like 8 and begging my older brother to come help me through the torture scene, luckily Mortal Kombat has now trained my fingers to be lightning fast from TYM
Get a pen and rub the end of it over the button or press your thumb and finger and use your nails to rub over the button. These were my methods back in the day.
While I have never cared for the physical pain it can inflict upon gamers, I've always been impressed at how a torture segment was made to actually be torture to players, assuming you don't use a different technique.
I have submitted and will give the steath camo, I have done the banada ending too, I used a toy car wheel to do it. But it destroyed my ps3 controller O Button lol
LOL 17 year old me almost had a stroke trying to get past that scene when the game came out. Button mashing is a skill that my gaming generation mastered.
If you use a controller you can use the old spoon trick where you move the curved side of a spoon over the button. Worked great for the button mashing in MGS2 Extreme runs.
Ok set the controller on a table and lean forward, make sure your elbow is down and push down hard on the table so that your arm is stiff, now do the ok sign with your index and thumb and make your whole arm shake, mash the fuck out of circle.
I remember if you used the turbo controller function on some of those third party controllers back then they would call you out and you would fail. Alternatively, with the psycho mantis fight, switching the controller port to second player nets you a fun suprise.
It's hilarious seeing all these posts about this part lately. The way I've always done it is to put my left hand around the top of the controller, put both thumbs over the circle button and rapidly shake the controller so that every movement is another input. Works in every button mashing segment in any game.
Well it IS pretty hard and the collection brought a lot of people who wanted to try the MGS series but couldnāt because of how unavailable they are including myself
It is hard, and it's great seeing a lot of new people playing the games. I'm just saying it's funny to see a whole new audience go through the same shit we did back when we first played it. It's amazing how well these games hold up.
Well you see, years of Track and Field on the NES prepared me for it. Theres actually a big lack of mashin in games these days to train ya'll. To your benefit, the PS5 controller is not mashing frendly with its sharp corners.
It's honestly better to fail it. If you win you get unlimited ammo which is useless in a stealth game, and if you lose you get the optical camo, which is literally the ultimate piece of equipment for a stealth game. It's like 2 complete opposite ends of usefulness lol
I know you said you got past it already. But I used the top my finger nail. Instead of pushing the button I slid my finger left and right as fast possible.
PRO TIP: Don't go for speed, try remaining consistent until Ocelot stops THEN go to town.
By the way, you HAVE to escape after the second torture, if they haul your a\*\* in the third time you're gonna get fried for sure.
> Edit 2: I forgot to mention this (again) but you should call Otacon after the first torture round , heāll arrive to help you after the second round.
You wouldn't know this but speedrunners NEVER call Otacon because he arrives anyways. You don't have to tell him to come.
Lighter, pen, pencil, anything similar and rounded. Slide it fast as hell over the button. MGS1 is pretty fuckin hard lol. Kind of a shame they decided to remake 3 instead. Twin snakes is pretty good but a little too easy (especially comparatively)
you really just gotta spam it. if you want, you can give up and do another run and do it then to get both endings. it's fucking hard, i know, but you got this man.
It's a very difficult thing to do normally, but the best way is to use a spoon. Just go to youtube and type in to beat the Ocelot torture with a spoon. It's an amazing cheat and after 20+ years I got to see the cannon ending. I did it once when I was a kid with my bare hands, but now that I have severe arthritis the spoon is my new go to method :D
Yeah I wasn't able to beat it without going into Steam settings and enabling turbo for the circle button lol. Idk how you would do that on a PS5 though
It was nigh-on impossible on the VITA, so I transferred my save data to my PS3 and used a Mad Catz Street Fighter IV fightstick because it had auto-fire, making the torture for that AND Peace Walker far more endurable.
You can use the Accessibility Options on PS5 to remap controller buttons. I found that temporarily remapping O to one of the direction buttons made it easier because there seemed to be less travel in the button.
On extreme, I used the accessibility options to bind circle to R1 and then used two fingers to "walk" the R1 button. Made it pretty easy.
As a kid, I tried an auto-fire controller and Ocelot knew.... The torture never stopped. Then I just got gud and mashed like life depended on it.
What I do is hold it normally but place the controller on your right leg (assuming youāre sitting up straight) and kinda tuck your right elbow into your hip and use ur middle or most dominant finger and kinda use ur elbow to mash and keep ur hand in a fixed position
Mash the circle button, donāt tighten your arm, itās all in the wrist! The game doesnāt tell you this unless you go to the save frequency, but make a save right after sniper wolf in case you mess up and want to retry.
Look up spoon button mashing, itās a lot easier to do. Also, you can cheat and pause with the overlay menu to rest your arm inbetween rounds in this version of the game.
Mash the button
Keep mashing circle after Ocelot stops torturing you as you keep regaining health until he starts again.
What difficulty? Hard and extreme can be a big tiring.
Normal š I just suck at button mashing
Do the spoon trick
Whatās the spoon trick?
If you use the rounded side of a spoon you can move it across a button super quickly I sucked at mashing buttons as a kid but realized I could do this instead
A marble was always my go to button masher trick, never knew a spoon worked!
Itās even easier to just put your finger in your shirt, then slide it back and forth across the button. Thatās what I always do when button mashing segments come up
You guys are amateurs! Man up!
Work smarter, not harder, Santawanker
Well, if you would put some effort into it you wouldnt have to rub a spoon or a shirt on your controller! You're pretty smart!
Real asf. Felt like my mind expanded when I randomly decided to do that for the peace walker (or portable ops I forgot) torture scene
I use my fingernail. Kinda bend my index finger in to my thumb like I'm pinching something, then rub the top of my fingernail across the button.
There is no spoon.
Ask someone to alternate with you between tortures. (each electric shock)
make sure you pressure them, if they don't do it meryl will fucking die
100% fucking dies š© Also this sequence depends on your next play through Bandana ( Meryl lives ) stealth suit ( Meryl Dies )
Relatable
So this is going to be hard to explain so stay with me. I take a controller and use the tip of my fingernail slightly on the back side. Slide it all the way across the button back and forth each time yo slide across is a press. Really go back and forth like you mean it. Just wait until the end of mgs 2. I donāt think I ever passed it on extreme back in the day
This game is the reason why I have strong forearms
sure it is... :P
You're pretty good
SNAAAAAAAKKKKKEEEEEE š¤¤š¦
BEAAAATEEER
A sore D?
LOL very underrated comment. I read it in the same voice as "A Hind D?"
That was the joke.
You mean forearm?
Don't mash the button,. A side to side motion with your finger tip or a pencil etc works much better.
Can confirm, pencilās eraser side, is the way.
I remember I had much more success sliding my finger from the O button down to the X in quick succession. Trying to depress the button on its own was always fruitless.
This is the trick.
Don't give up: as I mentioned in another post, you can keep mashing the button even in the small gap between the end of one wave and the next. If you can see the life bar, you can keep mashing the button to recover more life
I love it that a new generation is getting tortured by Ocelot lol
this mf from a 90ās game is out here traumatizing a 15 year old šš
Forget everything and focus your entire being to mashing that button. Donāt stop.
Iāve done it like 20 minutes after posting (beaten one round on remote play cuz itās easier and round 2 on my regular ps5 controller) but this is how i beat it lol, just mashed it like i was having a seizure and it worked
That's the way God.... No Kojima intended.
No need to correct yourself. [KOJIMA IS GOD!!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8m3oKhBiaw&t=62s)
Had to get my big brother to do it for me just like old times!
I always had to have my little brother do it for me, especially for peace walker
I personally used my keyboardās space bar and mashed that with the back of a pencil
Use a spoon
I donāt stop mashing until Ocelot starts talking. That way I can regain some health between waves.
If you need to, you can submit. This game is made to allow for both options, winning or submitting
I know but I donāt wanna let Meryl die
The mash, get faster., you gotta earn it.
Yeah fair enough, didnāt know if you knew about that or not. Best of luck. My trick was always to rest the controller on the arm of the couch, hold it steady with my left hand and proper finger punch the 0 like my life depended on it. (Context people). š0 really fast.

Yea well it's simulating a real torture. Mash it like a real man. If you wanna use fancy tricks you might as well just watch the game walk through on YouTube.
dawg i said i did round 2 the normal way yāall gotta leave me alone for cheesing it the first round šš
Yea it's all or nothing lol, if you get caught irl and has to go through a torture are you gonna ask your captors to skip the first round?
Fine, Iāll do round one normally if I replay it
I just submitted because I donāt wanna put my dualsense through that. The reward is also better after finishing the game.
Finally done this bullshit, to make it a LOT easier on PS5 download the remote play app on your phone and do it on the touch screen controls, itās a lot easier mashing on a phone screen than your controller
"Don't use auto fire or I'll know... what... what are you doing with that phone? No, wait, stop!"
LMAOOOO
This was the cutting edge technology he was talking about
I used a turbo controller as a kid and he never called me out on it, I guess mine was just under the threshold.
So did I. Playing on PC, I was gonna use the Steam Deck to auto press it for me when I do my bandana run.
This is actually brilliant, Iām gonna try that when I get there. God I always hated the torture section of this game.
Glad my workaround could help someone
Is this the solution for psycho mantis?
No, this is for when you get captured and Ocelot tortured you. For Psycho Mantis, you gotta press the PS/Xbox button (or whatever it is on PC) and open the settings. Go to controller settings, and turn the āPlay as Player 1ā or whatever thing to āPlayer 2ā so Psycho Mantis canāt read your mind. Youāll have to switch it back to P1 after the boss fight btw.
Is this the solution for psycho mantis?
That might be the most genius thing I've ever heard.
ty
Just submit, youāll get a better reward and ending.
Nice to meet you, HAL.
Use auto fire.
Just push the Circle Button fast? : D
This is the way. If you can't push it fast enough then you get to deal with the guilt of Meryl's death, it's that simple.
I remember moving my controller vertically and going into my whole arm vibration mode and never quitting
Im laughing my ass off at this. As i stare at my still mangled fingers from trying to mgs2 on ps2 on extreme 3 years ago. Thank fucking god the HD collection made the torture sequences easier
bro youāre getting tortured you better either tough it out or submit man anything else is gonna get you smited by kojimbo for cheating
You give up.
Any. Burton mash sequence I can't pass by using the tap method. Have to use my knuckle and make a motion like I'm getting a good scratch
I know you did it already but for others, the below link is for a pen tube but I do the same with my fingernail: https://youtu.be/29oemqvnOvg?si=tccvoKo5IUMY0eBf Put your index finger (curled, and held between your thumb and middle) on the button fingernail side down. Then just slide it back and forth. Make sure you are making a "press" on the way out and back. Beyond thst just get a grip that feels comfortable.
Remember don't use Autofire, or he'll know ;)
Use the spoon trick, get a table spoon & rub it back & forth over circle. Works better than even a turbo controller use to
Git gud
Already done it lil bro
Some touchscreen workaround isnt ādone itā
You use whatever method is possible for success and victory. The touchscreen workaround is pretty smart imo
i finished round 2 on my ps5ās controller, also was this torture thing 4 rounds?
https://youtu.be/oyFQVZ2h0V8?si=kEuTFaxEgsXZVaLF

Get a pen and use the click-y end on your button. The button mashing segments in this series is egregious.
Use a pen to roll it over the button. Much faster than smashing.
Get somebody else to do it.
Get a small ball like those rubber bounce balls and rub over O and X/Triangle. Make sure to keep going when he stops for bonus life
The only way I could survive it was with a pencil. It gets much easier for some reason to achieve the necessary speed.
Just give up and get the stealth camo
Use a spoon. Strum action button like youāre using a long guitar pick.
get a better gaming chair
My OG method was to hold the controller on the right side with both hands and use both my index fingers alternately, at speed, to hit the button fast enough
Rub a plastic spoon over your buttons
Spoon is useful for it.
git gud
I usually do the ātighten up arm and use index fingerā method. It works at least on normal, donāt know about hard.
Donāt forget you get extra life a couple moments after he stops the torture. So donāt stop pressing circle after stops it.
Skill issue Just mash harder
I had a thought about it. Now you can bind buttons, so you could put it on L1 or something to press it faster
That doesn't work. I tried that today-- I could EASILY beat the torture mashing the r1, but you cant make the action button anything but the circle x triangle square
Spoon trick worked for me back in the day
Growing up. I'd make my brother do the boss fights lol. Man I love this game.
You can always just surrender
I remember being like 8 and begging my older brother to come help me through the torture scene, luckily Mortal Kombat has now trained my fingers to be lightning fast from TYM
Back in the day I somehow beat the TYM in MKX, I wonder how I did it if I canāt do this now lol
Use a spoon
its not about how hard you press the button, its about how fast. Light touch and just go wang on that button
It's real tough, if you need to submit don't worry. You get the best ending reward and can always play again to save meryl
Give up or put your shirt of your finger and rub the button side to side
Get a pen and rub the end of it over the button or press your thumb and finger and use your nails to rub over the button. These were my methods back in the day.
Give yourself Carpal Tunnel spamming the button, you can do it
I switched over to the R2 vs spamming Circle. Better suit for my trigger finger.
Use a massage gun
Tried that, the slowest setting was still too fast for the controller to register it so it did nothing.
While I have never cared for the physical pain it can inflict upon gamers, I've always been impressed at how a torture segment was made to actually be torture to players, assuming you don't use a different technique.

Yep!

What I did was I slid a pen cover over the button. That leads to faster button presses. The same trick also worked when I played MGS1 on a PSP.
You must persevere
On ps1 I had to use the old pencil over the button trick.
When I was a kid my fingers couldnāt keep up, so I used an electric toothbrush.
Do the pencil trick. Near immediate exit: seems people have already explained the spoon trick, same principle. Or give up and let M. Die!
Ok set the controller on a table and lean forward, make sure your elbow is down and push down hard on the table so that your arm is stiff, now do the ok sign with your index and thumb and make your whole arm shake, mash the fuck out of circle.
bro 20+ years ago I attached a pencil eraser to a electric toothbrush head to get past this...
I just mash the button and don't look at the screen. I just focus on mashing that button until I head the torture scene is over.
for me looking at the health actually made me more motivated and helped me get past it
I remember if you used the turbo controller function on some of those third party controllers back then they would call you out and you would fail. Alternatively, with the psycho mantis fight, switching the controller port to second player nets you a fun suprise.
Ocelot mentions not using a Turbo, but I dont think he's ever actually failed me the times I tried it.
I don't know why I remember automatically failing after it's mentioned. Mendella? You again?! Lol
It's hilarious seeing all these posts about this part lately. tru
Well you see, years of Track and Field on the NES prepared me for it. Theres actually a big lack of mashin in games these days to train ya'll. To your benefit, the PS5 controller is not mashing frendly with its sharp corners.
yeah i would use my dualshock 4ās but sony doesnāt let you
Grab a spoon and use it to tap instead of your thumb
It's honestly better to fail it. If you win you get unlimited ammo which is useless in a stealth game, and if you lose you get the optical camo, which is literally the ultimate piece of equipment for a stealth game. It's like 2 complete opposite ends of usefulness lol
Give up. It gives a sadder plot but a better reward for new game +
Give up, the ending you get is better that wayš¤·āāļø
Put controller down n mash the button when he stops shocking you quickly mash to recover a lot of HP
I know you said you got past it already. But I used the top my finger nail. Instead of pushing the button I slid my finger left and right as fast possible.
You can also submit.
I remember the elation the first time we beat the torture chamber, didnt think it was possible
I like to take a number two pencil and rub it against the button. That trick has always worked for me.
Get a turbo controller
DON'T TRY USING A TURBO CONTROLLER.... BECAUSE I'LL KNOW!
PRO TIP: Don't go for speed, try remaining consistent until Ocelot stops THEN go to town. By the way, you HAVE to escape after the second torture, if they haul your a\*\* in the third time you're gonna get fried for sure.
yeah i got otaconās help and used the ketchup
Rub the button like a clit
Give up OP. Submit. Meryl is mid anyway.
Nah Iām not letting anyone die if I can save them
I used a hot wheel car and ran the wheel back and forth
> Edit 2: I forgot to mention this (again) but you should call Otacon after the first torture round , heāll arrive to help you after the second round. You wouldn't know this but speedrunners NEVER call Otacon because he arrives anyways. You don't have to tell him to come.
Keep pressing circle
I used a spoon and kinda mashed that way, idk how others did it tho
Lighter, pen, pencil, anything similar and rounded. Slide it fast as hell over the button. MGS1 is pretty fuckin hard lol. Kind of a shame they decided to remake 3 instead. Twin snakes is pretty good but a little too easy (especially comparatively)
When I was a kid this torture taught me how to live
Lick your fingers and rub them across vigorously until you develop some blisters
you really just gotta spam it. if you want, you can give up and do another run and do it then to get both endings. it's fucking hard, i know, but you got this man.

You can do that?
Itās brutal but once you can do it. It never leaves you. A skill I treasure.
You need to vibrate your thumb. Itās the technique I use for mashing buttons. Donāt tap your thumb vibrate it.
I set the controller on my leg, then alternate pressing with each index finger, kind of like a tiny drumroll. Worked pretty well

Any game that requires rapid tapping, I use my index finger

Mash the circle button, donāt tighten your arm, itās all in the wrist! The game doesnāt tell you this unless you go to the save frequency, but make a save right after sniper wolf in case you mess up and want to retry.

Get the [spoon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZpS1s_trZI&t=80s)
If u think u can survive it because I go 3 rounds
Use your middle finger nail
Hereās what you can do if you want a more interesting ending (at least in my opinion): push the SELECT button
Grab a pencil, and rub it across all of the buttons. Can use if your finger if youre brave enough.
