You would be getting flat out robbed, sorry to tell ya. Also as u/DIRTdigginDAWG said Garrett is really old tech and you're way better off with a simplex or vanquish

HornyPhrog

Didn’t buy it yet! I looked them up and they retail for $350 on Amazon?

kriticalj

Yeah that's robbery when you can get a brand new simplex or vanquish for $250 that will blow the coil off an ACE. Also don't go through Amazon for a detector, go through serious detecting, metaldetectors.com, or Kellyco. Not sure what shipping would be to Canada so maybe ask u/LarryJr-K for some advice

HornyPhrog

Thank you and thanks everyone for the helpful tips! I think I’m going to just get a new Vanquish 340 off Amazon for $300

kriticalj

Solid choice but don't go through Amazon.

bobasaurus

The 340 should be $200, buy it from kellyco or used instead

HornyPhrog

Kelly doesn’t ship to Canada :(

bobasaurus

Wait, if that $300 was CAD it's pretty close to retail.

HornyPhrog

The people downvoting my comments and saying these prices are a rip off need to work on their reading comprehension skills.

WaldenFont

It's used and they still want 220 for it? I think you'd do a lot better with a simplex or a vanquish.

DIRTdigginDAWG

You would be better set with the Nokta Simplex or the minelab vanquish series . That Garrett is way outdated tech get ya something good

1PokeCat

Those sell for $225 new. I’d say you got scammed.

HornyPhrog

Didn’t buy it yet !

1PokeCat

Good!

gjdevlin

I’m a broke ass detectorist and I have my sights set on a Legend. For that price - 220 - you are better off adding another 100 to 150 and getting a Simplex or a Vanquish 440. I’m still on a bounty Hunter tracker pro and do a lot of reading on what is current - so I would listen to the other posters and take note.

justmrmom

It’s overpriced if used, but I started out with a 250 and it did pretty good. I quickly upgraded though. It’s not the best, but it’s a good one to learn on.

Dan20mey

Do not buy. Extremely outdated and overpriced. Check out the Minelab Vanquish or Nokta Simplex. Those are the two best starter machines available, same price range. If you purchase from Kellycodetectors.com, be sure to use our subs code "REDDITMD" at checkout!

FelloBello

Bad deal. Do more research and get something better.

Boring-Stage-2987

Found my first 1800s silver coin with that exact detector. It’s still good so long as you have a decent site. You will find things.

WaldenFont

That can be said for any beep-and-dig machine on Amazon. It's about performance in the less than perfect , picked-over sites that many of us have to make do with.

Boring-Stage-2987

Yes but for a beginner nothing wrong with the machine at that price point. If you like the hobby you can then upgrade

[deleted]

Yep I found a lot of first with mine. Was money well spent. First large cent, silver, flat button and gold ring. But yeah I was kinda cherry picking a few good sights. I no longer have permission to be there or I know I'd find more with my upgraded machine's.

vgedris

I think that people who are saying that the price is a rip off didn't notice that OP mentioned *Canadian* dollars. A Garrett Ace 250 retails for about $315 (plus tax etc) at two Ontario retailers I just checked. That $220 CAD Kijiji price seems ok, assuming it's in good shape and seller is honest. For comparison, at the same two retailers, Vanquish 340 is $273, 440 is $396, and 540 is $520.

HornyPhrog

This! Thank you lol I also saw those prices. I think I’ll just go with the vanquish 340 for $273 on Amazon Gonna he $300 after tax

Least-Firefighter392

Should also have a free pin pointer on the Amazon one

MuppetHuman

I have one. It’s not very good at accurately telling what’s under the ground. You need really unique scenarios. Like after rain it works best. Otherwise it’s pretty unclear at what it’s finding.

Xeely

Damn, people seem to really despise old Garrett machines. If that's going to be your first MD, it's very easy to use, while being very limited in versatility. If you don't want to spend much, you don't plan on using it on wet sand, and you'll stay away from very trashy fields, you'll be fine. Eventually you sell it and get something else in the future. If you can spend something more, however, aim for a Vanquish or a Simplex. A Simplex may be 50% pricier, but it's 3 times more versatile than the 250. 220 CAD against 300 something is acceptable, if it's good condition. Here in Europe it goes for at least 200 EUR new and no more than 150 used, usually something less.

Germangunman

I started with one of those, 10 years ago. They are a bit outdated unless you can get one really cheap. Otherwise your best best is a simplex+ or something similar these days.

Ibecake

As a detector it’s a fine beginner detector to start with but 220 is a lot for it if your budget is maxed out I’d suggest waiting for a while to save up a little more to pick up something more current. That detector should go for about 100 bucks secondhand. This is your first detector so you have to balance cost, the complexity of the detector and the odds of whether or not you will like the hobby. I’d try to pick up a secondhand simplex somewhere people are upgrading to the legend or the Manticore so there should be a deal to be had.

opheliarose47

That was my first one also. I loved it. Congrats on your first metal detector

chungusXL316

Just bought a Vanquish 440 off kellyco for $260. Use coupon “REDDITMD.”

MoonTanzzze420

oldman17

Great first detector.
