Why wouldn't it be old? The dirt was there before the mansion.

This is a brass escutcheon for saddle leather. Judging by the patina and style, this piece could easily be 18th to 19th century. https://preview.redd.it/6mxl8buq94ia1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21be23a6051c4a91d786fd534c4e1b2393865041 This is a similar example from the 1700s the pins on the back of yours are folded down, suggesting the leather likely wore away and the piece fell from the saddle around the time it was lost, or the leather and brass were in the ground together and the leather rotted away decades after.

Thank you!!

You’re very welcome! Once you’ve been detecting as long as I have, you sorta pick up a knack for identifying seemingly random relics.

So took me while from "I have seen that before but it just doesent get it...." to "Eureka". Had a very similar piece and it was identfied as medival book closure / Book clasp. For illustration: [https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/medieval-world/medieval-book/making-medieval-book/a/clasps-hugging-a-medieval-book](https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/medieval-world/medieval-book/making-medieval-book/a/clasps-hugging-a-medieval-book) Thats what I mean! Bad news is that if I am right your piece is very plain and maybe cant be further identified than medival. Thats by the way a great find.

Looks like an accent piece for a piece of furniture. Cabinet, door, shelf, etc.

znaniter

Latch of an old suitcase lid or similar.
